She has been nominated for the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award several times, as well as the 2013 Nordic Council C & YA literature award, and was awarded the 2015 Danish Academy “Silas Award”.

You can tell children any kind of story, the key issue is how you tell it, says the author.

When Morten Dürr recently won a prize for his writing, part of the adjudication read thus: ”… Morten Dürr’s wish is that we take children seriously. Very seriously. We must help them to put difficult concepts into words and reveal the world’s huge diversity to them, including the harsh lives other children sometimes face, by way of stories that can put their own lives into perspective …”. Dürr believes it’s better to depict life as it really is rather than hiding it. It’s better to give children and young people a story that can frame their own words. He’s also greatly inspired by films and comic strips, which is clear in his two most recent books. In Zenobia (Zenobia), we meet Amina, a Syrian girl fleeing from the war in a boat. But the boat capsizes and Amina is thrown into the sea. In flashbacks, we learn of her life in Syria with her mum and dad before they disappeared.

The story began life as a novella Dürr wrote to show a different aspect of the Syrian refugee crisis. Illustrator Lars Horneman then developed the story into a graphic novel. One feature of the book being a large number of wordless drawings. It is a sad, harsh and moving story, but one that deliberately avoids blood and gore. Morten Dürr has also published another graphic novel this year, in which the illustrations are again centre stage: Vand til blod (Water to Blood). The main character, Lea, lives on a farm with her dad and brother. Lea’s mother is dead and it’s obvious that life was much brighter before she died. The family now follows a very strict religious code. No dressing up. No parties. Lea is also cut off from her friends. One day she is struck by lightning and special powers are bestowed on

her including a voice that can bring death and destruction. A powerful and gripping book, strikingly illustrated by Lars Gabel. Morten Dürr is a prolific author. On top of the above two picture books this year, he’s also published a picture book about an arctic fox in Greenland Miki finder hjem (Miki gets home). This was previously published as an iPad app. Morten Dürr, born 1968, is a film and media studies graduate and has been a film reviewer for many years. He debuted with the teen novel Skodfilm (Chancers) in 2004 and has since published a wide range of C & YA books. He won the Danish Ministry of Education’s 2008 author prize and in 2016 the School Librarians’ Children’s Books Prize. Illustrator Lars Gabel, born 1971, has worked as a C & YA illustrator since 2002. In 2015, he won The Danish Ministry of Culture’s illustrator prize for children’s and youth literature. Illustrator Lars Horneman, born 1966, has worked as a comic strip and children’s books illustrator for more than thirty years.

THE SCARY LOVE LEAP That first love – the oldest story in the world. Everyone’s gone through it, but it’s no less huge, vital and new for all first timers. Annette Herzog’s writing covers nearly all genres and is for all age groups. It’s what moves her heart that counts. We might get a thriller, horror, comedy, romance, easy reading, novels or comic strips. She sets great store by mixing things up and loves challenging herself.

”Understated, poetic and unbelievably captivating.” That was how her previous graphic novel Psst! (Psst!) was described when it won the 2014 Ping award for best children’s comic strip. The same might be said about its standalone follow-up Hjertestorm/Stormhjerte (Heartstorm/Stormheart). As a format, the graphic novel is highly suited to the mixing of genres and voices. You can read Hjertestorm (Heartstorm) in one direction and learn how Viola falls for her classmate Storm and then turn the book over and get Storm’s take on the same story in Stormhjerte (Stormheart) The split-book is illustrated by Psst! (Psst!) illustrator Katrine Clante and Rasmus Bregnhøi respectively. The author’s description of falling in love, with all the joy, fear, misunderstandings and shame it implies, is sharp and faithful. And the authorial tone that depicts love affairs from earlier times, teenage room noticeboard and diary quotes, paints a brilliant mosaic of the world most teenagers inhabit. There is deadly seriousness, but also humour in the portrayal of

the changes and sense of selfestrangement in a teenage body. Not to mention all those crazy things that are said and done, because definitely man - it was totally and utterly correct. SMALL, BUT SMART Sille likes to draw and play hide-andseek with her big sister Ester. She’d like to be able to do exactly what her sister can, but it’s not always that easy. The ‘Sille’ stories tell of simple everyday situations that make you smile. Author Ida Jessen (born 1964) has won several literary awards and was a 2014 Nordic Council Literature Prize nominee for her Postkort til Annie (A Postcard to Annie) book of novellas. She is best known for her literature for adults, but has written several children’s books, e.g her series on the young elephant ‘Carl’, illustrated by Hanne Bartholin. Illustrator Lea Letén (born 1982) has a background in IT and communications and is a self-taught illustrator and author. Can you show a picture of a horse and put the word “fish” below it? Yes, you can. But it’s completely wrong. So when adults read it aloud they’re obviously mistaken, and kids love being able to correct adults. A different kind of pointing-book, full of surprises, that helps children, not just learn new words, but also explore the meaning of language. HuskMitNavn (RememberMyName) (born 1975) is an international artist and satirist. His art forms vary from graffiti in public spaces and illustrations for print media to paintings and drawings.

Andreas Bræstrup Kirstein is known for his books about ‘Poul and Dad’. In those stories, Pia Linda was Poul’s doll. Now Pia Linda has her own stories about typical everyday experiences told with humour and a bit of a twist. Andreas Bræstrup Kirstein (born 1977) is a teacher. Amongst other things, he is TV producer for children’s television. Rasmus Bregnhøi (born 1965) won The Danish Ministry of Culture’s

Author and illustrator Kamila Slocinska trained at the Danish School of Design and Glasgow School of Art and is now a working artist, cartoonist and illustrator. Kamila Slocinska was nominated for The Danish Ministry of Culture’s illustrator prize for children’s and youth literature 2013 and won an Award of Excellence from ‘Communication Arts’ for the children’s book Køteren (The Mongrel).

Author Zenia Johnsen (born 1975) worked as a children’s librarian and books adviser for many years , but a head injury forced a career change. She is now a photographer and author. Illustrator Stine Spedsbjerg (born 1980) is a satirical cartoonist, particularly well known for her blog StineStregen (StinesStrokes). In 2016, she won cartoonist of the year and has been nominated for the Ping award several times.

When Nanna is lying in bed, just before sleep comes, a million things can suddenly happen. Her parents become so small they can fit in her doll’s house. Granny appears on her electric blue racing cycle and tells stories about being dead. Sometimes Nanna hears the roaring sea, or the grass growing, as she closes her eyes. These night tales are great for bedtime. The book has a beautiful, almost Clean Noir style with dark blue and white paper cuttings by Annika Øyrabø.

Literature. She has published a wide range of children’s books. Her book Pigen der ville give sin mor en stjerne (The girl who wanted to give her mother a star) was an Orla award nominee in 2009. Illustrator Annika Øyrabø (born 1977) studied art and illustration at Hamburg University of Applied Sciences and the Danish School of Design. She has illustrated several children’s books, with her signature paper cuttings both in Denmark and Germany.

Author Bjarne Reuter (born 1950) originally trained as a teacher, but has been a writer for over 40 years. Several of his books have been made into films, e.g. Zappa og Busters verden (Zappa and Busters World). He has won a stack of awards since his debut in 1975.

She debuted in 2009 with the teen novel Hvis bare … (If only …) and even though she has written books for adults, is best known for her teen-novels and their harsh and raw themes, such as suicide, cutting and eating disorders.

WHEN LOVE AND WAR COLLIDE 17-year old Sheherazade, a Muslim girl, falls in love with another girl. A raw and gripping tale about falling in love with someone everybody else says is a ‘No-No’ – and then paying the price for following your heart. Sheherazade’s family fled from conflict in the Middle East when she was 7. Her father seems to suffer from PTSD. But all Sheherazade wants to do is live her own life, write zines and maybe discover love. A well written page-turner that confronts racism, sexuality and culture clashes. The novel won the major YA Carlsen ‘Nye stemmer’ (New voices) award. Author Kristina Aamand (born 1972) debuted in 2007 with the deliberately provocative Mødom på mode - Beretninger om skik og brug blandt indvandrerer (Virginity á la mode – Tales of customs and practice amongst immigrants) and she has since published several books for children and adults.

Author Peter Mouritzen (born 1946) worked as a teacher until 1979. He writes both for children and adults, but primarily writes children’s books. He has won several prizes for his work.

Rosa’s mother has to sew a dog costume for her, and Rosa has to eat dog meat and sleep in a dog basket with the other dogs, Mitsy and Daisy, but unlike them, she has no name any more. Just ”dog”.

Rosa’s parents take the three ‘dogs’ to dog training. But one day Rosa’s mother lets her stay in the car park, unbeknownst to Rosa’s dad. She sets her free. But Rosa is now alone. Luckily, the story doesn’t end here. A nice lady looks after Rosa. Talks to her. Gets her out of the costume and gives Rosa her name back. Hund (Dog) is both raw and poetic, hard and warm. SUPPORT SCHEMES THE DANISH ARTS FOUNDATION’S COMMITTEE FOR LITERARY PROJECT FUNDING WORKS TO PROMOTE DANISH LITERATURE AT HOME AND ABROAD AND HELPS FACILITATE LITERARY EXCHANGE PROJECTS BETWEEN DENMARK AND OTHER COUNTRIES.

INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH PROGRAMME Support may be provided to foreign publishers, heads of festivals and the like who want to acquire an insight into contemporary Danish literature and visit Danish publishers, festivals etc., to strengthen networks and dialogue between the Danish and international literary partners. There is no application deadline, and applications will be processed as quickly as practicable.

SAMPLE TRANSLATION FUND Foreign translators, theatres, and publishers may apply for support to finance sample translations of Danish literature. There is no application deadline, and applications will be processed as quickly as practicable.

Support is provided to foreign publishing houses and theatres that publish works translated from Danish. Support is provided for translation costs of fiction, non-fiction works of general cultural interest, comics/graphic novels, children’s and YA literature and theatre plays translated by professionals. Support is also provided for production costs in relation to illustrated works. There are two annual application deadlines.

NORDIC TRANSLATION FUND: INTER-NORDIC TRANSLATIONS The fund is open to Nordic publishers wishing to publish a work translated from Danish to a Nordic language. Support for translations into Danish must be sought from within the country in which

the respective work was originally published. The funds for Nordic translations are distributed on behalf of Nordic Culture Point’s Culture and Art Programme under the Nordic Council of Ministers. Internordic production grants can be applied for under the fund for Translation and Production. There are three annual application deadlines.

DANISH LITERATURE ABROAD LITERARY EXCHANGE FUND Support may be provided to defray travel expense in connection with a Danish author’s / illustrator’s participation in literary festivals, readings and publication events abroad, if there is a formal invitation to promote a publication. Support may be provided to foreign authors travelling to Denmark on the same basis. In addition travel grants can also be awarded translators of Danish literature to a meeting with the Danish author. Danish authors and illustrators can apply for travel costs in connection with residencies abroad and

Subsidies for literary events and marketing Danish literature abroad. Applications for subsidies are accepted from foreign publishers, diplomatic representations abroad, cultural institutions and others who wish to promote and increase knowledge about Danish literature outside Denmark. Applications are processed as quickly as possible within four weeks. Projects with a budget of more than DKK 25,000 must expect a longer processing time of approximately three months from the time of application.

DANISH LITERARY MAGAZINE CHILDREN & YOUNG ADULTS IS PUBLISHED BY THE DANISH ARTS FOUNDATIONâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S COMMITTEE FOR LITERARY PROJECT FOUNDING. THE MAGAZINE IS PUBLISHED ANNUALLY.
