The City of San Antonio has long been a melting pot culturally as well as architecturally. Some of the finest homes in the city were built between the late 1880’s all the way up to the early 1930’s. All of these homes are part of the architectural period known as The Eclectic Movement. The architects of these homes drew heavily from European influences within the classifications of Chateauesque, Beaux Arts, French Eclectic and Tudor. The Tudor style is most prominently seen in San Antonio in the Olmos Park area as well as some notable houses in Terrell Hills and Monte Vista. Tudor homes are mirrored after English country houses and manors of the early 16th century; the defining characteristics of all Tudor homes are their steeply pitched roofs and stucco and masonry building materials. One defining characteristic in many Tudor homes is the “half timbering” on the stucco of the second level of most of the two-story styles.
