The Des Monies Public Library, situated in Iowa, al minimalist concept and intent has been translated
Usa, exemplifies how David Chipperfield’s architecturinto a built form through the material systems used.
Creating the highly refined exterior is compised of premade repetative glased panel which can be easily slotted intp place during construction. The panels sandwich a expanded copper mesh between triple glazing, that functions to shade from dirrect sunlight at surtain angles preventing overheating. These specially produced glass panels act as the main feature of Chipperfeild’s design. While providing a substantial thermal envelope, Chipperfeild installed the 4 by 14 ft pannels infront of the mullions further adding to the minimal, aesthetic of the building. The building also has a shadow gap feature making the library look as if it were floating in mid air. This, coupled with the extensive thransperancy of the building make it look light weight during the day. Night is the only time during the day that a person can see into the the building as is emits a warm shade of light. This effectivly blures the boundyies between the interior and the exterior, as during the day the readers have privacy but at night it is almost like anyone on the stret can walk straight through the glass. Finaly, the aluminium coping at the roof , adds to the overall minimalist look of the building. The minimalist ideals extend into the interior, the bution limits clutter at ceiling level, while delivering The
