Ad Perpetuam Memoriam “To the perpetual memory” Perpetua was the creation of sculptor, typeface designer, stonecutter, and printmaker, Eric Gill–a leading figure in the Arts and Craft movement. As well as being known for his creative works, Gill came to be known for strong religious beliefs that were contrasted by proclivity for deviant sexual activities, such as zoophilia and incest.
Perpetua is a transitional font, meaning that it falls stylistically between the modern and old styles of font: the variation in thin and thick lines are more pronounced in Perpetua than in the old styles, but less so than in modern serifs. Perpetua features a high stroke contrast,
with a vertical stress, and bracketed serifs.
