Leadership is like crossing a raging river. Not just any river. A big African river like the Nile, Congo, Zambezi, or Niger. I recently took a boat ride with the Kurumbuka team at the source of the Nile River in Jinja, Uganda. It’s beautiful, wide, and powerful. It’s also difficult and dangerous to cross.
This Report is ultimately a story of God’s faithfulness to a mission birthed in the middle of a global pandemic. My hope is that reading this will help you become more passionate about investing in local leaders as you recognize they are addressing challenges you care deeply about. I hope it will help you understand our commitment to multiplication through leader development and how you can contribute. Together we can cross the raging river.
To get a picture at the official source of the Nile we had to take a rickety boat and disembark on a dilapidated wooden platform in the middle of the rushing waters. I was glad we had a boat driver who was able to navigate the river and keep us away from the rapids.
MESSAGE FROM THE Executive Director
Flavia from Uganda, a gifted educator who now trains teachers to be grounded in their faith and deliver a quality education. Or Alpha from Rwanda, who started one of the top primary schools in her country. Leaders like Alain, Irving, Flavia, and Alpha serve with a profound faith, an abundant mentality, a servant heart, and a commitment to find locally relevant and sustainable solutions to the challenges they face. As a result, with God’s help, they advance the gospel, address poverty, care for vulnerable people, and promote peace and reconciliation. As they follow God’s call on their lives, these local leaders need encouragement, tools, and a community of like-minded leaders. Our commitment at Kurumbuka is to develop and empower them, connect them with like-minded leaders, and help them multiply their impact in greater ways. Our job is to help them build a better boat or a sturdier bridge using local resources so they can cross the Nile with confidence.
The local leaders we serve in East and Central Africa navigate challenges that feel like crossing the Nile on a regular basis. Sometimes it feels like they are trying to lead from a deteriorating wooden platform while facing the prospect of hippos, snakes, and crocodiles. Especially in the midst of COVID-19. They have lost loved ones, dealt with financial challenges and economic hardships, and millions of their fellow citizens have been pushed back into Thepoverty.quality of their leadership has an outsized impact on their communities. They are pastors who deepen the faith of their congregations. They are entrepreneurs who solve problems and create jobs. They are educators who bring quality education to underserved girls and boys. They are health workers who give life-saving care to the sick. They are community organizers who stand up for the disenfranchised and the vulnerable. They are Alain from Rwanda, who started a ship building business that employs 150+ people in an impoverished rural area. Or Irving from Burundi, whose role as a DJ and youth leader has impacted thousands of young people. They are

60% of sub-Saharan Africa’s population is under the age of 25. These young people possess incredible potential, tremendous energy, and innovative ideas. Unfortunately, limited opportunities are stifling Africa’s youth and failing to prepare them for leadership.

Through our programs for emerging leaders, we will develop and empower 16-21 year-olds to live fully and freely as followers of Jesus Christ. This is accomplished by knowing self, others, and God, and by growing in discipleship, leadership, citizenship, and stewardship. The young leaders we support will be able to identify their calling and start a journey towards transforming their communities and nations.

In 2015, as violence swept through Burundi, Irving spent every Saturday broadcasting worship music at a radio station in Bujumbura. The station was located in one of the most dangerous areas of the city, but the personal risk was worth it for Irving. His heart was on fire to transform Burundi for Jesus. Just five years earlier, Jesus was not part of Irving’s life. He was living to pursue fame and he was gaining recognition as one of Burundi’s most promising DJs. Then his dad got sick, and as his world began to crumble, God reached out and captivated his heart. Irving’s life changed but his talents only continued to grow, and he began using them to grow God’s Kingdom.
Irving started his first radio program, preached in the streets, and helped launch Burundi’s biggest worship festival to promote unity in a conflict zone. By using his music and media skills, Irving’s influence was increasing, and hundreds of young people were being saved. Irving knew that he needed to be equipped to steward his influence well, so he began to study theology and he applied to join the Abundant Leadership Institute. When Irving joined ALI in 2020, he was one of the youngest students to ever participate in the program. By faithfully using his Godgiven abilities, Irving had already begun making a remarkable impact, but through ALI, he was being invested as a leader.

Kurumbuka Leadership Solutions exists to empower leaders like Irving. He is an inspirational example of how leaders can use their unique skills to not only spread God’s love, but to shape culture and invest in others. He knows he can’t move forward alone, so each day he prays, “God, you have to go with me or else I’m not going anywhere.” Reflecting on his time at ALI, Irving says:
Irving continues to develop new ways to reach thousands of young people. He started a second radio program, launched an organization to train other Christian artists, and he is highly invested in his church’s youth programs. However, now he approaches these programs with the goal of empowering others to spread a culture of transformation.
Learning about abundant leadership was transformational, but the turning point for Irving happened during the Empowering Leadership module. During this module, Irving learned how to multiply impact by empowering others as a servant leader. He combined this lesson with what he learned during the Strategic Planning module to develop innovative mentorship programs. Music gave him a platform, but ALI empowered him to spark a movement.

The first day Flavia stood at the front of a classroom she knew she was where she belonged. She was meant to be an educator. Growing up in Uganda, a country burdened by corruption, inequality, and poor leadership, Flavia felt a deep need for better leadership at every level in her country — especially in Flaviaeducation.completed her degree in education (with a specialization in Biology and Chemistry) before she started teaching for Watoto Education, a Christian organization whose primary focus is educating vulnerable children. After being promoted to principal, she wanted to learn more about nontraditional approaches to education. In 2019, Flavia was awarded the Fulbright Distinguished Award in Teaching Program Scholarship and spent five months abroad observing education. When she returned to Kampala, she desired to transform her school by changing educational pedagogy, student discipline, and teacher motivation. While serving as the head of Post Primary and Tertiary Education with Watoto Education, she was seeing her impact grow. However, her dream was to transform school leadership across the entire region, she just wasn’t sure how. Seeking out more training, she joined the Abundant Leadership Institute. At ALI, Flavia found a network of like-minded influencers pursuing common objectives across the continent. She met other teachers and school founders who shared her heart for education. Through these new relationships, she was able to learn more about why teacher motivation was so low and how she could make a difference on a larger scale. After completing the module on Strategic Planning, Flavia was able to apply her new knowledge in a bold new strategy for teacher training. Part of her strategy included working with her ALI colleagues to support educators throughout the region. She was also able to reach out to different partners like Teaching Training Together, a global organization training teachers across Africa. Today, Flavia has worked with over 500 educators in Uganda, Rwanda, and Burundi training them on pedagogy and school leadership; important components lacking in African schools today. Her work also

at ALI ended, she was inspired by 2 Timothy 2:2, “And what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also.” This verse captures Flavia’s calling, and after completing ALI, she knows that she is pursuing this calling alongside a network of like-minded influencers spread across the region. Flavia shared: “We, [Cohort 4], are these faithful [men and women]; we are not keeping these things we have learned to ourselves, but we are going back home and entrusting them to others. We are hoping that these others will pass them on as well. This practice, in essence, is abundant leadership. We would like to promise you that East Africa and Africa as a whole will be a better place because of what has been placed inside us through the Abundant Leadership Institute.”

Rachel Mahuku WELLSPRING SENIOR PROGRAM MANAGER | ALI FACILITATOR 2Cohort | Rwanda 24
In 1994, approximately 1 million Rwandans were murdered in 100 days. The Genocide Against the Tutsi wasn’t a spontaneous tragedy – it was manufactured, in part, by the colonial education system. With a passion for education, Rachel Mahuku returned to Rwanda. Her plan: empower a new generation of Rwandan educators.
ABCD was transformational for Rachel be cause it changed the way she saw people and how she approached working in low-resource communities. Rachel says, “ABCD is relational, it’s about the community telling their stories and realizing what they have when they come together: their individual assets [and] those of the community. [By] connecting them, they can build a better community.” Ultimately, ABCD provided a framework that aligned with the historical practices of African communities. ABCD spe cifically connected with Rwanda’s traditional self-reliance philosophy.
Equipped with her knowledge of ABCD, Rachel began to multiply her impact. She helped families and schools create a shared vision and use the gifts of everyone to accomplish that vision. By adopting a mindset of abundance, Rachel began to see real transformation where she worked. After experiencing the tangible impact of one ALI module, Rachel decided to complete the full program. During her time at ALI, Rachel learned and taught others how to lead like Jesus; she fully embraced servant

SOLUTIONSMULTIPLYING
Rachel began teaching future teachers in the Kigali Institute of Education as an assistant lecturer before joining the Wellspring Foun dation for Education in 2012 as a program manager. Shortly after beginning her new role, Rachel was invited to attend a module on Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) hosted by Wellspring and the Abun dant Leadership Institute (ALI).
In contrast, Rachel says, “we need to see that we are the ones to bring our own development.” By working with Wellspring and serving as an ALI facilitator, she is helping bring this vision to life. Rachel shares: “We are capable and can develop our communities with the little that we have. If everyone brings the little they have and comes together, it becomes something big. People used to ask for handouts, but now they have Godsustainable.becomehassaidthisis the fruit of our hands, all of us together.” 26
leadership; she started to invite collaboration among her team; and she improved as a mentor and spiritual director. By building on her knowledge of ABCD, Rachel was able to better accomplish her mission: develop Christ-like leaders among teachers, parents, and Rachelchildren.was invited to facilitate the ABCD course for her classmates. She not only provided in-depth knowledge of ABCD principles, but she offered real-life examples of how to practice ABCD in East African communities. Her classmates shared that it was one of the most influential elements of their entire ALI experience. Rachel still serves as the ABCD facilitator for ALI, empowering other African leaders to engage their communities in the process of community development. Rachel uses the miracle of Jesus feeding the 4,000 in John 6:1-15 as an example of the potential of ABCD. Through compassion for a community, Jesus invites the crowd to contribute what they have and multiplies it to feed the whole community. She believes that as leaders and followers of Christ, we are invited into this same work of community engagement and multiplication. ABCD offers a radical mindset shift to African leaders. Colonialism established a needs-based, scarcity mindset that caused communities to believe that solutions only come from outside the continent. This idea has been entrenched by a broken aid system.

Alain Munyaburanga MANAGING DIRECTOR OF AFRINEST ENGINEERING LTD. 2Cohort | Rwanda 28
Alain Munyaburanga’s parents fled Karongi, Rwanda in 1959. 35 years later, 97% of Karongi’s Tutsi population was murdered during the Genocide Against the Tutsi. The persecution that Alain’s parents fled followed them to the Democratic Republic of the Congo. As a child, Alain was ridiculed by his neighbours, classmates, and teachers because he was considered a Rwandan refugee. Oppression hardened Alain’s resolve while softening his heart for others. After earning his degree in Electrical Engineering in 2000, Alain worked in Nigeria, the United Arab Emirates, and South Africa before moving to his mother country, Rwanda, in 2006. Alain joined the Abundant Leadership Institute while leading a school for girls. The lessons Alain learned paid immediate dividends, but what he didn’t realize was that ALI was equipping him for a new, unexpected, leadership role.
DREAMSREALIZING
In 2018, Alain worked with partners to launch Afrinest Engineering Ltd., a company specializing in designing, building, repairing, and operating ships. Its new factory – one of the largest buildings in Rwanda’s entire Western Province – is located a few hundred metres away from where Alain’s mother grew up in Karongi. The same place his parents fled from. Alain was drawn back to Karongi by the opportunity to find local solutions for multiple marine-related challenges in the Great Lakes region. Before Afrinest, all ships were imported and then never maintained –some boats hadn’t been repaired in over 50 years. Furthermore, all experts (e.g., captains, engineers, electricians) who worked on the lakes came from abroad. The pre-existing system perpetuated dependency but ALI equipped Alain to see another way. At ALI, Alain learned that “you can get out of any situation by recognizing and utilizing the assets around you.”
The greatest asset Alain identified was an available workforce in Karongi. To build the factory, Afrinest Engineering Ltd. hired over 150 employees from the area, making it the largest employer in the region. By using what he learned at ALI, Alain is not just employing local staff, he’s empowering them. When Alain needs to bring in external experts, he pairs them with 2 to 3 local staff members to 29

be trained. He is quickly preparing to open a maritime academy in Karongi that will educate experts for the entire Great Lakes region. Even though Afrinest’s journey is just beginning, Alain is already starting to realize his dreams for Karongi, a place so closely connected to his family’s past. Before attending ALI, Alain says he had only been taught how to give orders. Now, he is a servant leader committed to blessing the region by unleashing its potential. When Afrinest reaches its near-term target of 300 employees, it won’t just represent 300 jobs and additional organizational capacity. Instead, it represents 300 individuals with dignity and increased opportunity. 300 individuals who, thanks to Alain, will be able to support their families and access healthcare, education, and proper nutrition. With his commitment to lead by serving, Alain’s impact will only continue to multiply.

Alpha Akariza FOUNDER OF DISCOVERY SCHOOL INTERNATIONAL Rwanda|1Cohort32
Alpha always knew her mother valued education, but the depth of her conviction became abundantly clear when she sold her house to cover her childrens’ tuition costs. As a stateless, single mother of four, she did whatever was necessary to help her children Growingthrive. up, Alpha was committed to justifying her mother’s sacrifices. After being raised in Kenya and Uganda, Alpha completed her undergraduate degree in South Africa before moving to the UK for her master’s degree. Her mother had paved the way for Alpha to dream, and Alpha dreamt of living a life of impact. She just wasn’t sure how. Shortly after completing her education, Alpha moved to Rwanda. Her grandparents had fled 49 years earlier, but after settling in her mother country, Alpha felt like she finally had a place she could call home. Alpha earned challenging and rewarding job opportunities with Edify International and the World Bank where she provided business advisory services for school founders and entrepreneurs. As her global outlook expanded, her understanding of where she came from deepened. She hoped that her work was making an impact in Rwandan communities that went beyond data collection and multi-page reports. In 2011, Alpha got married and started a family. While her own family grew, she was committed to helping Rwanda rebuild. She was a working mom, advancing in her career, and invested in her church. Everything changed during a lunch meeting in January 2015. Alpha was connecting with a friend who asked, “what do you want to do with your life?”
It wasn’t a new question, but at that moment, Alpha had unexpected clarity: start an elite, holistic, and transformational primary school in the heart of Kigali. Education had played a critical role in her life but as she prepared to send her young sons to school, the quality of local education was 33
AN DISCOVERYABUNDANT
Investors supported Alpha’s vision and she acquired land to construct a new facility. Discovery was becoming real, but Alpha didn’t know if she was ready. She says, “I never thought that I’d start a school. I always felt really sorry for people who started schools because they juggled so many pressing challenges. I worked with plenty of courageous edu-preneurs and I didn’t consider myself quite the entrepreneur.” In that season of uncertainty, Alpha joined the Abundant Leadership Institute. As a member of ALI’s first cohort, Alpha says, “the Abundant Leadership Institute was so empowering for me because it…demystified what it meant to run a school.” She got to hear her classmates, including veteran school leaders, share their experiences every day. These relationships extended beyond the classroom. As Alpha continued to move Discovery forward, she would call fellow ALI students like Fred Buyinza, Stephen Rudakemwa, and Beatrice Bamurange. They would provide practical information and encourage Alpha in her journey.
Alpha’s ALI experience directly informed Dis covery’s identity and values. Alpha says, “our values were all ideas that I learned at the Abundant Leadership Institute.”
no longer an abstract challenge – it was an urgent need. She began to share her mom’s conviction –the same conviction that led her to sell her house to cover tuition fees. But, thanks to her mom’s sacrifices, Alpha was in a position to pursue more ambitious goals: “When I was a child, my mom was just hoping that I would have a few basics and go to a good school. Now I’m hoping that my children can be the best that God made them to be.” Alpha wanted her sons to be equipped to succeed anywhere in the world, whether it’s Kigali, London, Seoul, or the Silicon Valley. She wanted a world-class educational experience that went beyond basic literacy and prepared her sons for Christ-centred impact. This fledgling vision energized Alpha, and after that lunch meeting, she created the first draft of a business plan for a new school in Kigali: Discovery International School.
The first element of ALI that Alpha carried into Discovery was the importance of relation ships. Alpha says, “I learned through ALI that relationships are life-giving, and for the work that we do, you actually need that abundant life to be at work every single day… I want our team here [at Discovery] to experience the life-giving elements of community that I experienced at the Abundant Leadership Institute.” The second carryover from ALI was the importance of an abundant mindset. “From the Abundant Leadership Institute, I knew that we wanted to have an abundant mindset and to see that our staff are at the centre of…defining it, of delivering it and being accountable to keeping our promises to the children.” By defining her guiding values, Alpha established Discovery’s mission statement: empower children to become grounded and thoughtful leaders who will transform Rwanda and the world. When kids leave Discovery, Alpha’s goal is that each child has a love for learning, a passion for excellence, and strength in character. Realizing this dream will make an unquantifiable impact across the nation and beyond. By the time Discovery opened its doors to its first nine students – a few months before her ALI graduation – Alpha felt empowered to pursue her God-given vision for transformation. Today, Discovery International School offers an internationally certified education to 360 students ages 2 to 11. Each student is supported by a team of 55 educators from around the world who are experts in 21st-century pedagogy.
Alpha has had to overcome many challenges as a Christ-centered servant leader to reach these milestones. The biggest challenge began in 2020 when schools shut down across the country due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As Alpha prepared to transition to online learning, she was burdened by 35

questions: ‘how do you increase a five-yearold’s literacy digitally?’ ‘what’s the best online platform?’ ‘how do you pivot and train staff?’ Parents were frustrated, and in the pandemic’s first few months, Discovery lost 40% of their students and lowered tuition fees. Alpha was overwhelmed, but her team displayed the abundant mentality she had initially shared with them. Together, they developed a cutting-edge online learning experience that integrated Discovery’s values. Teachers helped parents buy-in, and due to the staff’s adaptability, Discovery eventually recovered to its pre-COVID numbers. As Alpha looks to the future, her motivation to multiply impact is unwavering. She says, “I think it’s why we exist: to continue to bring life – the godly life, the abundant life – and healing into the communities that we come from.” For her, the ability to make an impact rises and falls on servant leadership: “We have to continue believing in servant leadership and nurturing it and watering it until we have seen transformation bit by bit, step by step.” It’s what her mother modeled so Alpha could go to school, and, today, it’s what Alpha is modeling while empowering Rwanda’s children to also live lives of servant leadership. She knows that if she’s successful, a much larger dream will come to fruition:
