Empowering Leaders Rose Mutesi Rose Mutesi is a wife, a mother of three, a mentor, and a leader, and she’s proud to be Rwandan. Rose was raised in a nomadic community that practiced a traditional way of life. Girls and women had limited rights and forced marriages and child brides were common. Many girls did not receive an education because of poverty or pregnancy, or simply because no one would take them to school. From an early age, Rose desired to promote gender equality in her country, so she decided to study social work at university. This field of work was uncommon in Rwanda after Rose graduated so she began trying to launch her own organization in 2012. Despite the criticism she received

Connecting Influencers
Freddy Tuyizere
Freddy Tuyizere was working at a boarding school when someone threw a grenade into the boys’ dorm building. Eight students died immediately. Freddy was devastated, but God used this tragedy to give him a clear vision: raise up Burundian leaders to transform the nation. At this moment, Freddy realized, “poor leadership is the biggest problem in Africa.” Freddy resigned from teaching and went to Bujumbura, the largest city in Burundi, where he volunteered at Scripture-Union full-time for 3.5 years before launching Youth for Christ (YFC) Burundi. Under Freddy’s enthusiastic leadership, YFC became one of the fastest-growing organizations in the country. Currently, YFC has five

Florence Ofwono has always had a heart for improving her community—it’s one of the main reasons she joined Victorious Education Services in 2009. Victorious—one of the largest and most successful schools in Kampala, Uganda—doesn’t just exist as an educational institution, but it strives to be a vessel for community development. Over the years, Victorious continued to grow, but no matter how hard Florence and the rest of the leadership team worked, she wasn’t witnessing the change she hoped to see in the community. She says, “my heart was bleeding and I was asking ‘how can I change this community today? How can I do this task? Jean Kasereka
Jean Kasereka’s passion for education has endured through years of instability, war, and political unrest in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Today, he oversees 814 schools from Uvira to Orientale as one of five School Coordinators for Baptist Churches in Central Africa (CBCA). In total, these schools employ over 9,169 teachers and educate over 230,282 children. When Jean applied to ALI, he didn’t think he would learn anything new. Today, however, Jean says “it is God who connected me with ALI” because the one-year program made a profound impact on his life.
