INTENSITIES OF SKIN : REIMAGINING THE FACTORY SEMESTER 6 | INDUSTRIAL | VELLORE, TAMIL NADU During the sixth-semester architectural design studio we designed a Tanning Factory in the town of Vaniyambadi, one of the hubs of leather tanning and production in Tamil Nadu. We were asked to question and critique the insularity of factory as a typology in architectural discourse and re-imagine the infrastructural possibilities of a space of production within the constraints of the selected context. The project aims to reinforce the need to bring forward a much-neglected workspace typology that remains largely invisible despite its socio-economic merit. We were urged to conceive the design through tectonic explorations while speculating on the relationship between inhabitation of space and its materiality. Furthermore, the core focus of the studio was on defining the factory as a humane workspace and calibrating the requisite services in order to mitigate adverse environmental impact. (S6 Studio Brief, Avani Institute of Design) 5

Vaniyambadi is a major town in the Tirupattur district of Tamil Nadu. Located on the banks of Palar River, it is one of the hubs of leather tanning and production in Tamil Nadu. The strategic location of this town near an abundant source of water is beneficial for the needs of the leather industry.

SETTLEMENT STUDY (Group Work, Batch 2017)

Girisamudram is the nearest settlement to the site. An extensive study and analysis of the culture, people, built space, amenities, living condition etc. was done. This study became the essential base for designing the residential complex inside the factory campus.

A cluster in the settlement was deeply analyzed and studied to understand the relation between commercial and residential building, public and private spaces, people and spaces, people and profession etc. 6

AXA TANNERY

(Group Work, Batch 2017)

We visited working tanneries in vaniyambadi to understand how the space work and documented the whole structure and analyzed its advantage and disadvantage.

MONASH LIBRARY CAULFIELD

(Group Work, Batch 2017)

Architect : John Wardle Architects Location : Australia To understand the tectonics of the materials I chose a literature study was done on Monash Library Caulfield. 7

The proposed 5.3-acre site is located on the banks of the Palar river and is approximately 500 meters away from NH 46.

The design process started with understanding the slope of the site to strategically place the factory area on the slopes, facing the river and the residence on the flatter side.

Initial Design Iteration - On placing the factory I used the slope the advantageously to reduce the built area on the site as most of the spaces are tucked along the contours. The residence and amenities were placed on the flatter side with a view to the river.

In this iteration, all the space are placed facing the river and also the amenities to activate the river edge. Access is provided to the river edge without compromising the security. 8

NARRATIVE, SENSE AND SPACE: CULTURAL INTERPRETATION CENTRE, MAHÉ SEMESTER 5 | CULTURAL | MAHE, PONDICHERRY The brief was to design a Cultural Interpretation Centre at Mahe. We understood the complexities in the cultural history of Mahe, consolidate oral histories and memories, and construct a narrative that is shared and meaningful. It is expected that this narrative will be realized through the spatial and tectonic design and material detailing of the Cultural Interpretation Centre, which is a mixed-use public building in a significant location in the vicinity of the Mahe waterfront. Furthermore, a very significant aspect of this project is Inclusive Design (designing for the differently abled) as an embedded philosophy and not as a compliance driven approach, so as have positive social impact and be able to provide an experience that is accessible to all.

(S5 Studio Brief, Avani Institute of Design) 15

CONTEXT STUDY

(Group Work, Batch 2017)

Mahe is a small city with significant historic relevance as it is a part of French history in India. Visited major historic points and understood the pulse and movement of the people and the city.

We combined physical and historical study of the city with deep listening, consolidating oral histories to amplify our understanding of the city (as the client). The study focused on understanding the transformation of the urban and cultural landscape of Mahe, looking for signs of continues as well as disruptions of memories, myths, legends, stories, identities, rituals and practices, ways of living, and important sites and buildings.

STREET ELEVATION

The public node near to the site was documented and analyzed to understand the movement of different people and the activities that happen in the area.

SITE STUDY Total Site Area - 1947m2 Area of Existing Building - 418m2 There is an old traditional building existing on site which has heritage value to Mahe. As the site is located near to the park and other public places , the site has a great relationship with the public spaces and people of Mahe. The site is not only facing Tagore Park but also the Mayyazhi River.

We selected one narrative (one thread) from the graphic novel (Mayyazhippuzhayude Theerangalil by M. Mukundan) to convert it into a spatial articulation, which was then sited, tested and retested to arrive at a precinct plan that combines narrative sequence with urban gesture and strategy. The architectural program is then negotiated into that.

POST-DISASTER REHABILITATION AND RECONSTRUCTION SEMESTER 4 | RESIDENTIAL | KARICHOLLA, KOZHIKODE The Fourth semester architectural studio is about Architecture and Community - an opportunity to respond to the disaster we faced “The Kerala Floods 2018. On 16 August 2018, severe floods affected the south Indian state Kerala, due to unusually high rainfall during the monsoon season. It was the worst flood in Kerala in nearly a century. The brief was to construct 24 housing units for the people who lost their home in 2018 Kattipara landslide. The studio intends to integrate the domains of culture and built environment of a society to be re-imagined. The studio was done in 2 stages - Firstly, it was a collaborative studio with 3 other colleges (SEA, Mumbai , CARE, Trichy, Wadiyar, Mysore) most of the initial works were done in group. Secondly, Individual Master Plan and Unit Design. (S4 Studio Brief, Avani Institute of Design) 21

CONTEXT STUDY (Group Work)

We studied the context of our site and mainly focused on the settlement near the site, how they are formed, their relation to the context, response to the terrain and the river nearby.

22

MASTER PLAN (Group Work)

After all the study we developed a strategy for the master plan and tried out different iterations. Our main focus is to develop a community which succeeds both as a cluster and as a colony. Well defined pathways that makes the outsider feel comfortable to the place. House are primarily placed with the main intent of connecting the verandas and backyards to form an interactive space.

HOUSE OF OIL EXTRACTOR (Group Work)

Accordance to the master plan and the profession provided by the brief for our group we developed different iterations for the unit design. 23

UNIT DESIGN The unit is designed with a large front area connecting the veranda and when it comes to the cluster design the front area creates larger spaces for the cluster.

LIGHT, FORM AND SPACE SEMESTER 3 | MIXED USE | KUTTICHIRA, KOZHIKODE The Third Semester introduced the concept of ‘quality of space’ (spatial quality) as a resultant of combining / association of things (elements) that help contain/make it. The driving theme was to explore and understand the importance of light, ventilation, circulation, volumes and functional organization (study of relationships) as an integral aspect of architecture. The project is to design a Space of Work + Space of Living for Radio Koya (Music Collector) exploring volume, scale, proportion, light quality, functional organization, massing while also envisioning space sensitive to its physical and social context.

(S3 Studio Brief, Avani Institute of Design) 27

CLIENT STUDY Name: K Hydrose (Radio Koya) Age: 75 Occupation: Collects and Repairs VALVE Radio Passion: Music

SITE STUDY

Iterations on massing strategies with developmental process drawings and models. Following an understanding of programmatic and functional organization for the given project, massing studies were done using volumetric boxes to explore relationships between spaces on the given site. 28

SITE

Area : 734.14m2 The site is located in Kuttichira, Kozhikode. The longer edge of the site is facing the chira (pond), thus giving a beautiful waterfront site. Kuttichira is a quarter located inside the city of Kozhikode.Kuttichira also houses some of the largest and oldest Tharavadus, which are traditional joint family houses. Two ancient mosques, Muchundi Mosque and Mishkal Mosque are used as private places of worship. The Big Bazar, one of the oldest and biggest trading lanes in Malabar is located here.
