R FROM THE DEAN I am excited to introduce you to our Ph.D. graduates and candidates who are seeking academic positions starting fall 2021. The University of Kansas School of Social Welfare is rooted in the Strengths Perspective. Our dedicated researcher/scholars prepare students to practice with integrity and competence; advancing the science and knowledge base of social work through scholarship and research; and participating in community-engaged service. Our doctoral program equips graduates with the critical knowledge and skills they need to become innovators as researchers, scholars, educators, social policy analysts and academic leaders. Our graduates reflect this commitment. This year our candidates are scholars studying maternal, infant, and early childhood mental health with a particular interest in racial equity and justice among Black and Latino populations and serious emotional disturbance (SED) and child and adolescent mental health services. I encourage you to read further for a more comprehensive look at these scholars. I believe they would bring incredible talent, ambition and strength to your school. TEACHING SCHOLARSHIP TEACHING INTERESTS Amittia is committed to preparing and supporting the next generation of social workers, with a particular interest in recruiting, training, and mentoring students of color. Amittia engages with social work students through research, teaching, and service. She is particularly interested in student mental health and currently conducting a study to understand the perceptions of supports across contexts. This work will also lead to developing, implementing, and evaluating mental health interventions for social work students. Amittia’s teaching experience includes teaching fully online, blended, and in-person courses within the undergraduate and graduate programs. Areas of interest include: Racial Equity and Social Justice, Practice with Black and Latino Communities, Social Work Practice with Children and Families, Communities and Organizations, Spirituality in Social Work, Leadership in Social Work, and Qualitative Methods.
