COLLABORATE WITH RENOWNED EXPERTS & TRANSFORM LIVES Through a rigorous curriculum, real-world research experience, and individualized mentoring by world-renowned scholars, the KU School of Social Welfare Doctoral Program graduates develop the knowledge and skills to drive discovery and advance the field of social work. After graduation, our PhD alumni secure employment in universities, colleges and research institutes and are leaders in the field of social work. In essence, by embarking on lives dedicated to driving discovery and advancing knowledge, our Doctoral Program graduates rededicate themselves to transforming lives. The goal of the our Doctoral Program is to prepare students to become leaders nationally and internationally in advancing social work practice and policy through research, teaching and scholarship. Our students graduate from the program with the critical knowledge and skills they need to become innovative stewards of the discipline who generate and disseminate knowledge as researchers, scholars and educators.

Dissertation (6-9 hours)

Students will typically enroll for 6 hours of SW990 in spring of year 3 while working on the Qualifying Paper and later, on the Dissertation Proposal; then 6-9 hours of SW999 each semester through completion of Dissertation. Electives can also be taken during summer semesters.

ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS • Complete online application at graduate.ku.edu/apply • Master’s degree in social work is preferred. Applicants with master’s degrees related to social work are considered • Two years of social work or related practice; two years of post-master’s professional social work experience preferred • Graduate grade-point average of 3.5 or higher is required • Undergraduate grade-point average of 3.0 or higher preferred • Submit student-issued transcripts from all previously attended schools • Current resume/curriculum vitae • Personal statement • Completion of basic statistics course within the past two years with a grade of B or higher • Three online recommendation references • Signed agreements to the NASW Code of Ethics and the School of Social Welfare Technical Standards • Personal interview by telephone • All non-native English speakers are required to submit a copy of their TOEFL or IELTS score sheet taken within the past two years
