2018 RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS socwel.ku.edu

MESSAGE FROM THE

This Research Highlight provides a glimpse into the transformative, communitybased research conducted by the School’s faculty, research staff, and students in 2018 as evidenced by dissemination through publications and presentations. The connections between the researcher’s expertise and the Grand Challenges for Social Work are also highlighted. The connection between research and academics is critical to the future of our field, and so you will read about how we engage students at all levels in scholarship. When working on research projects, these students gain the opportunity to connect classroom knowledge with applied research but they also provide novel insight and ideas to the projects. Our work would not be possible without our many funders and community partners, and so we thank them for engaging in this important work with us. We hope that our work teaches you something new or inspires you to make your own impact on the field and the world. We would love to hear from you or collaborate with you in the future! Sincerely, Michelle Mohr Carney, Ph.D. Dean and Professor, University of Kansas School of Social Welfare Amy N. Mendenhall, Ph.D Associate Dean for Research and Associate Professor, University of Kansas School of Social Welfare 2

OUR VISION & MISS All individuals, families, & communities utilize their power to achieve justice, equity, & well-being. The University of Kansas School of Social Welfare, rooted in the Strengths Perspective, aims to transform lives and social contexts and promote social, economic, and environmental justice in Kansas, the nation and the world. We do so by educating students to practice with integrity and competence; advancing the science and knowledge base of social work through scholarship and research; and participating in community-engaged service.

Guiding Principles & Values Relationship Building: We engage in relationship building that fosters creativity, collaboration, and mutual learning. Relationship building is essential across practice, scholarship, education and service. We take a strengths approach as we serve our local, state, national, and global communities. Diversity, Equity and Inclusion: We embrace the inherent worth of all people. By taking the position of cultural humility and applying the lens of intersectionality, we seek to develop and promote modes of anti-oppressive social work and dismantle structures of exclusion. Practice with Integrity: We demonstrate our integrity and trustworthiness as scholars, educators, practitioners, and community members by promoting social work values, ethical practice, and the process of critical reflection. Multisystem Competency: We recognize that social, economic, and environmental injustices are the root causes of inequities and multiple strategies are necessary to address these. Our work integrates micro/macro social work and builds collaboration across systems and disciplines to create multi-level change. Critical Perspective: We engage in deliberate and continuing examination of social conditions and solutions. We use critical inquiry to analyze and challenge existing structures and systems in order to advance the field and promote social, economic, and environmental justice. Empirically Informed Social Work: We rigorously advance empirical research that impacts the social work knowledge base. By translating and applying evidence, we continually transform practice and policy across multiple systems.

E SOCIAL WORK: Y-BASED RESEARCH RESEARCH GOAL Our goal is to conduct, disseminate and translate theoretically and empirically informed scholarship and research that impacts the social work knowledgebase and transforms practice and policy. Our faculty, research staff and students work towards this goal by collaborating with community stakeholders and other scholars to address the many social issues that face individuals and communities at the local, national and international levels. This community-based work takes many forms including training, evaluation, research and policy analysis.

CENTER FOR COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT & COLLABORATION The University of Kansas’ School of Social Welfare has an extensive history of community engagement and agency partnerships, and has been instrumental in the shaping of many practices and policies in human service systems and agencies. In order to extend the impact of this work as well as to more efficiently organize and promote these long-standing efforts, the School of Social Welfare is excited to announce the development of a new center, the Center for Community Engagement and Collaboration (CCEC). CCEC will work collaboratively with stakeholders across systems to pursue collaborative projects and invest in organizational capacity, with an aim of promoting social, economic, and environmental justice. The Center will partner with the community to transform practice and policy through evaluation, training and technical assistance, and professional development. CCEC has two divisions: (1) Agency Capacity-Building & Community Evaluation (Associate Director: Melinda Lewis) and (2) Professional Education (Associate Director: Kortney Carr).

Alice Lieberman earned her B.A. in Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin, her MSSW from the University of Texas at Arlington, and her PhD in Social Welfare from the University of Wisconsin. Dr. Lieberman joined the KUSSW faculty in 1988 after a brief tenure at the University of Southern Maine. Her areas of interest and scholarship have included child welfare, workforce development, and pedagogy in undergraduate social work education. Dr. Lieberman has led numerous federally funded child welfare and workforce development grants while at KU, bringing valuable resources to the School and state. She has published many influential peer-reviewed journal articles and books, and served as the series editor for the Social Work in a New Century book series published by Routledge. Dr. Lieberman has been a cornerstone of the School’s BSW program, serving as BSW program chair twice and mentoring and teaching countless undergraduate students over the years. Her passion and skill working with undergraduate students resulted in her selection as a member of the prestigious Chancellor’s Professor of Teaching Club. Terry Moore earned a Bachelor of Science degree at Kansas State University and a MSW in social work administration from the University of Kansas. Over the last 35 years, Terry has held a variety of social services management positions in both public and private sectors, and has held a position on the School of Social Welfare research staff for the last 26 years. He has been the Principal Investigator on over 70 externally funded projects undertaking child welfare and children’s mental health research, program evaluation, and training. His work since 2004 has centered on data analytics and reporting for state and local child welfare programs. Terry is the founder and director of the Results Oriented Management (ROM) project at KU. He and a team of software developers have developed web-based management reporting software called ROM Reports that is being used in 12 states. As the primary author of a web-based training called Results-Oriented Management (ROM) in Child Welfare, he has widely presented, written, and trained on this subject.

Christopher Petr earned his Bachelor of Science, MSW, and PhD all at the University of Kansas. He joined the faculty in the KU School of Social Welfare in 1988 after a brief tenure at Baker University. During his time in the School, Dr. Petr served as the Chair for the Office of Child Welfare and Children’s Mental Health from 2002-2004, and as the PhD program director from 2008-2016. Dr. Petr’s scholarship focused on policy and practice issues in child mental health and child welfare. He has been involved in many externally funded children’s mental health and child welfare studies while at KU, and more recently, made significant contributions to knowledge related to social work doctoral education through publications and involvement with the Group for the Advancement of Doctoral Education in Social Work.

Professor Severson provides consultation to the U.S. Department of Justice and to jails and prisons across the United States. She has led numerous externally funded projects in these areas, with many of these projects helping to shape local and state policy and practice in corrections. Professor Severson has also been an active, valuable mentor within the School for both doctoral students and pre-tenured faculty, providing particular support and advocacy for women’s roles and responsibilities in academia. She served as the PhD program director from 2017-2018. 9

SOCIAL WORK: EARCH & ACADEMICS Students, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, play a critical role in the research done in the School of Social Welfare. Students may be involved in research through student research assistant positions, graduate research assistantships, independent studies, or their own research projects. Participation in research provides students with the opportunity to critically apply classroom knowledge to real world community-based examination of social conditions and solutions. Students learn how to conduct, disseminate and translate research in order to transform social work practice and policy. In return, students offer a fresh perspective to research teams and provide valuable work such as project coordination, data collection and entry, and analysis and dissemination of results.
