Welcome to the 2012 MAC Art Auction Spokane On behalf of all of the Volunteers involved with this effort – a very warm and heartfelt “Welcome!” to the 2012 MAC Art Auction Spokane for the benefit of the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture. We are grateful to the master artists who have submitted a spectacular array of art to be juried and selected for the 2012 auction. Participating artists have generously set reserves low to allow more of the proceeds from sales to benefit the MAC. The MAC will also benefit from the buyer’s premium paid on each item sold. Our evening has been underwritten by ticket sales to those of you in attendance – thank you! Production of the beautiful 2012 Auction Catalog was financed by the sale of advertising for the first time this year. We thank our catalog advertisers for this inaugural support. Another first in 2012 – through LiveAuctioneers.com our auction will be simulcast on the Internet. This will allow art patrons and serious collectors anywhere to participate in the auction this evening through contemporaneous online bidding. Welcome to those of you online, as well! We are delighted to present for auction the very finest collection of new artworks ever assembled for an event of this kind in the Pacific and Inland Northwest. Artists involved are known and their works are collected regionally, nationally and, in many cases, internationally. We are pleased to pay special tribute this year to one such internationally known artist – Spokane’s own renowned sculptor, Sister Paula Mary Turnbull. Again, thank you for your participation and for your generous support of the MAC.

On behalf of the Staff and Trustees of the Northwest Museum of Arts & Culture – better known throughout the Inland Northwest as “the MAC” – we are pleased to welcome you to the 2012 MAC Art Auction Spokane. At this evening’s Auction you’ll have the opportunity to acquire artworks in a wide spectrum of dimensions, styles and media that fully reflect the talent of our region’s Master Artists. In doing so, you’ll provide essential financial support for the MAC’s arts mission: to foster appreciation for the arts, the aesthetic development of our visitors, and a vibrant cultural community for the Inland Northwest. Traditionally, MAC exhibitions have featured the works of important regional artists – both historic and contemporary – and works from a collection of traditional and contemporary American Indian art, Inland Northwest masters, Northwest Modernism and Contemporary Art, and the famous WPA-era Spokane Art Center. Today, we are entering in an exciting new era of Museum programming that we invite and encourage you to visit, appreciate and enjoy. A must see is: Seeing Impressionism: Europe, America and the Northwest, in our gallery until May 19. Our American Indian exhibit: Lasting Heritage, is layered in beautiful art, cultural perspective and historic relevance. The last I’ll mention is: Dig It! The Secrets of Soil, an amazing interactive exhibit created by the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History. If you want “the dirt” on the MAC, come see this splendid exhibit. This year, the Auction moves to Spokane’s Historic Davenport Hotel, a magnificent showcase for the region’s most notable artists. We know you’ll enjoy the Auction’s elegant and lively celebration of artists and their art, and the opportunity to acquire selected artworks. We also believe that the memory of your experience will bring you back again next year. Meantime, we thank you and wish you successful bidding!

Tribute to Sister Paula Turnbull

Stella and Clyde, 23 x 18 x 14”, Lot 87

Sister Paula Mary Turnbull, a renowned Sculptor in the Northwest and beyond, has produced hundreds of artworks and educated countless students during her lifetime as a Sister of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary. Art is her ministry – a sharing of God’s gifts to enhance the lives of others. In her own words, “I am an artist because I can’t not do art – it is a gift from God to be developed and shared.” Born and raised on Seattle’s Alki Beach, Margaret Turnbull grew up surrounded by the beauty of the shore and the Olympic Mountains. It was here she scooped up a pile of clay to form her first sculpture and her fascination with making animals and figures began. Educated at Holy Names Academy Seattle and Sister Paula in her studio, Spokane, WA Holy Names College Spokane, Sister Paula has an MFA degree, has taken advanced studies at University of Washington, the New York Parsons School of Design and the Art Institute of Chicago. Sister Paula’s ministry of art is diverse, stretching across continents, reflecting religious and non-religious themes in both private and public collections including the Corcoran Gallery, in Washington, DC. Her materials reflect diversity as well – she sculpts with wood, marble, clay, steel, brass and copper. Her innovative use of copper tubing to create life-size figures and architectural pieces is her own unique art style.

The Spokane Valley Arts Council was formed as a not for profit corporation in 2004 with goals of improving the appreciation of art in its many forms and therefore elevating our overall culture. Annually for the past five years, we have produced the Artists Showcase in Centerplace. This art event is a benefit auction whereby the public can interact with professional artists producing what they do best. The proceeds then go to purchase art objects to benefit our citizens for generations to come. The artists receive a portion of the proceeds from the event. We thereby are supporting the creators of the art, the city and its citizens. For the past two years the SVAC has lent it’s support to the MAC Benefit Auction and thereby supported the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture.

Artists Biographies Ron Adamson began his technique in bronze sculpting in the late 1980’s in the remote mountain area of Libby, Montana. The casting process is very time consuming from the beginning of the sculpture to pouring the piece in bronze. In 1990 Ron Adamson built his own foundry. Since that time, he has won many awards, including Best of Show/Sculpture award from the “Celebration of Western Art” show in Puyallup, WA. Ron has many bronzes displayed from Arizona to the White House. www.ronadamson.com Chris Autio grew up in Missoula, MT and started in his first darkroom in early high school. He earned degrees at MSU Bozeman in Photography and English Literature. After time in Portland, he returned to Bozeman and began photographing for artists and exhibiting work around the state. Autio has a studio and photo business in Missoula, and continues to hand-color large-format fiber prints. www.chrisautio.com Fritz Bachmeyr is a classically trained painter, who studied in the Brera Academy of fine arts in Milano Italy 50 years ago. His style is influenced by the old masters and he studied the European Court and salon painters from Nicholas Largillire to Boucher. He tirelessly supports the arts and struggling artists, promoting and fund-raising for both the Valley Arts Council and the MAC. www.americanfineartcompany.com/artists/97 Harold Balazs is an American sculptor and artist whose work has been featured in exhibits and public art installations throughout the Inland Northwest. In his words, “What inspires me to paint is when elements like light, color, shape, value, and texture all come together to make an otherwise ordinary scene extraordinary.” Don’s works are currently featured at Deselms Gallery, Cheyenne, WY, the You and I Gallery in Kennewick, WA, and will be in a six-week 2012 show at the Old West Museum, Cheyenne, WY. Don has also been involved with the murals in Toppenish, WA, for several years. Dinah Carlson, figurative sculpture is the preferred medium of her art. She has been trained under the tutelage of Del ‘Espree’ Rosaland Cook, attended the Florence Academy of Art and recently completed a two week workshop with Richard MacDonald of Carmel, CA. Her works can be seen at Lillian Conn Antiques & Gallery, Spokane. Felisa Carranza plays a large role in the work of this Spanish born artist. People, nature, memories of home, and music move Carranza to transform them onto sculpture and canvas as fantasy sceneries. Felisa was educated at L’ecole des Beaus Arts in Paris, France, and in the US, she completed BA, BFA, and MA degrees at Eastern WA University. Her fine art is collected nationally and internationally. She currently lives in Spokane and shows her work at the MAC Art @ Work gallery in Spokane. Virginia Carter is a native of Spokane attending Lewis and Clark High School and Spokane Falls Community College. Whimsically capturing the expression of the various characters and creatures that illustrate her mix of functional and sculptural forms is her specialty. She has been a self-employed artist for thirty years working from her studio in Chattaroy, WA. www.virginiacarterpottery.com Gregg Caudell works from his Sanpoil Studio on the Colville Indian Reservation in NE Washington. When he isn’t working in the studio or “en plein air”, he is logging and farming with his teams of Belgian Draft Horses. pleinairartist.blogspot.com

Melissa Cole paints because she can lose herself entirely in the process. Over the last ten years, she has discovered that with the most mundane ingredients—acrylic, canvas, copper, clay and wood, she is able to create something that vibrates with its own raw energy. Cole’s creations make people stop their mad hurtle through life to pause, breathe, and enjoy an experience. She has always been attracted to unusual color combinations and intricate ethnic patterns. www.melissacole.com Todd Connor was born in Tulsa, OK. He began painting at age 12 and from that time has been fascinated by basic shapes, harmony of color, and atmospheric works that suggest serenity and easier times. He is a plein-air painter, ever seeking the illusion of outdoor light. For subject matter, he has done extensive travel along the major rivers, Civil War battlefields, and other historic sites. He has also studied at Tulsa Junior College, the Kansas City Art Institute, and the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. www.toddconnorstudio.com Don Crook is a Northwest award winning painter. He has won over forty Best of Show and painting awards in his career, including three times at the prestigious C.M. Russell Auction. Sometimes known as the “Norman Rockwell of Western Art,” many of his illustrations have been reproduced on the covers of more than eighty books and magazines. Important publishers such as Leanin’ Tree and Louis L’Amour Magazine continue to use his work. www.doncrook.com Dean Davis was born in Wurzburg, Germany to a military family and spent seven years in the Army as a young adult. These travels and adventures ultimately led to a career as a commercial photographer. In addition to his commercial work, Dean’s fine art photography is part of the MAC’s Art @ Work Gallery and in private collections around the US. http://deandavis.com Gloria de los Santos attended the Chicago School of the Art Institute and graduated from the University of Illinois. Her parallel career as an arts instructor includes employment with The American Academy of Art in Chicago and UCLA extension where she has taught in the Film and Entertainment Department. www.gloriadelossantos.com Marian Flahavin’s work expresses her fascination with the human figure – the “life” that makes that figure who it is. A number of her pastels and bronzes have been juried into National Shows in NY City, one at the Butler Institute of American Art and many others. She has received a Gold Medal in a New York show as well as numerous other awards. She is included in “Who’s Who in America.” Locally, paintings have benefited the Ronald McDonald House, Valley General Hospital, St. Ann’s Children Home and Gonzaga Prep. A garden sculpture benefits Morning Star Boys Ranch. www.marianflahavin.com Hulan Fleming gave up teaching in 1968 for a full-time career in fine art. His work has been juried into Oil Painters of America (OPA) Regional and National shows; Art for the Parks Top 100, Top 50 of 100, and the C.M. Russell Art Auction. In 2009, he was chosen to be one of the Artists of the Quarter by the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. Hulan describes his work as realistic impressionism, not truly historical to detail but bearing the spiritual idea of the place. For the future, his interests are leaning towards the Plein Air (painting on site) and more impressionism. www.hulanfleming.com George Flett is an American Indian artist living on the Spokane Reservation in Wellpinit, WA, and is one of the foremost Indian artists in the NW. He has shown and won awards at notable venues across the West, including the Santa Fe Indian Market, the Heard Museum in Phoenix, the Montana Indian Market in Billings, the Red Cloud Indian Art Show in Pine Ridge, SD, and the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody, WY. He is one of a growing number of artists who continue in the tradition of ledger art. He is a featured artist of Tinman Gallery in Spokane, WA. Gina Freuen’s 30 year career in Spokane, Washington, has evolved around family, gardens, studio and teaching at Gonzaga University as an instructor of introductory design, drawing and ceramics. Her multi-media works on paper and complex but whimsical one-of-a-kind porcelain and stoneware vessels are featured in fine galleries and select art festivals throughout the Pacific Northwest. At ArtStop Gallery in Tacoma, she will exhibit in the 2012 Washington Clay Arts Juried NCECA exhibit. www.ginafreuen.com Carl Funseth is a lifelong resident of the Northwest and studied architecture at the University of Idaho. This discipline is clearly evident in his characteristic style depicting both the early and contemporary scenes and buildings of the Northwest. His original oil paintings display a nostalgic quality that attracts the attention of discriminating collectors throughout the region and the United States. Carl was selected as the artist for Idaho’s centennial poster. His works grace collections throughout the United States, Europe, and the Far East.

Gabe Gabel has won many national awards for her sculptures over her thirty-five year career. Her work is recognized for both the accuracy and vitality of expression she achieves. Her series of fountain bronzes range from delicate interior work to larger than life size. Her wildlife sculptures are treasured in gardens across the country. Gabe has her studio at her farm in North Idaho. Visitors are welcome to her gallery and gardens. www.gabegabel.com Ric Gendron, a member of the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation, has been painting professionally for over 20 years. He has shown throughout the US, including all the noteworthy Indian markets at Santa Fe, Phoenix, Indianapolis (the Eitlejorg Museum), and Portland OR. He was the featured artist at Julyamsh in Post Falls, ID in 2006. Several of Ric’s paintings are on permanent public display at the Ruby Hotel, which is located on Lincoln and 1st in downtown Spokane. Ric just completed a large painting for the Colville Confederated Tribes Museum. He has been represented by the Tinman Gallery, Spokane, WA, since 2003. Rhea Giffin curiously weaves possibilities, observations and quirky irony into a story in her artwork. Giffin brings her sculpture to an unexpectedly delightful art indulgence. Her work is a frolicsome escape from ordinary. All of her signed and numbered collected works are imbued with layers of much more than what meets the eye. Rhea has exhibited in galleries and juried shows across the country. Her art is featured in many international publications including the recently released Lark Studio Series: Chairs, 500 Cabinets and the 2008 500 Chairs: Celebrating Traditional and Innovative Designs as well as In the Spirit of We’Moon, a 30 year anthology. www.rheagiffin.com Lila Girvin is a native of Colorado. Growing up in a place where in compelling ways land converges with sky provided Lila with an early visual imprint. Living most of her life in the Northwest has sustained this lifelong embrace with the environment. Lila earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Denver and has pursued additional study at Washington State University and the Frye Museum in Seattle. Her works represented in fine public and private collections throughout the Northwest as well as the MAC’s Art @ Work Gallery. Del Gish calls himself a realist. In all of his paintings, an effort has been made to record some observable truth. Color, form, and light effects are all considered. These objective qualities are balanced by attitudes and thoughts that are unique to each artist. Mere selection of subject reveals a lot about the artist, at the same time the effort to paint is a very uncertain endeavor and inherent in everything artist does is an element of mystery. Gish’s work is in public and private collections, including the Art Students League in New York City, the Seattle Art Museum, the Frye Art Museum, and the SAFECO collection. He resides in Medical Lake, WA. Tom Hanson has been creating art work full time for over 30 years. Tom comes from a family of artists in Great Falls, MT. He gained an early art education in his father’s studio, MSU-Bozeman and the Scenic Art Shops in Hollywood. Tom’s work can be found in many collections and galleries throughout the region and has developed a successful market niche in the corporate art market nationally. Tom now resides in Spokane Valley, WA. www.tomhansonarts.com George Hill says he had an instant love for carving. Under the influence of Larry Ahvekana, he learned the basics and fundamentals of three-dimensional art and learned to put a freedom and flowing motion into his sculpture. George has served as director of the Spokane Tribe’s Cultural office, but art has come to fill his life more and more. For George, “Art work calms the beast inside.” Sandra Hiller worked at building harnesses for over 20 years. Then she participated in a class teaching the sculptured leather technique and she was hooked. Most of her work portrays the animals she loves to draw. She strives to make them look as realistic as possible, particularly concentrating on the eyes. She loves it when a piece watches her move around the room. She feels her work should always be evolving and improving. Creating her work is her passion. www.thesaddletree.net

His trademark, giant canvases and bold colors are prized by his collectors. His equal prowess as a sculptor makes him a formidable force in today’s art world. Terry has created a truly unique style. It reflects a combination of the old masters and a lot of “Terry Lee” bringing a new energy to wildlife art. A resident of Medford, OR, Roni works plein air as often as possible. She finds the urgency of capturing the fleeting effects of light both demanding and exhilarating. www.ronimarsh.com Mary Maxam, a native of Idaho, finds inspiration for her paintings in the beautiful scenery and gardens of the Northwest. Mary’s work has shown in many juried national exhibitions, including the Midwest and National Watercolor Societies. She has won signature membership in the National, Northwest and Montana Watercolor Societies and has contributed both paintings and written work for book and magazine articles on painting and design. Charles Palmer integrates the movements of impressionism and expressionism to create what he calls “naturalism.” His landscapes combine design elements, light and color that are carefully woven into vibrant images of the Northwest. His passion for nature is brilliantly displayed throughout his collection. Palmer skillfully meets the challenge of back lighting in his oil paintings, combining light and shadow to achieve depth. Each brushstroke adds to the refracted rainbow of color. Charlie received his BFA from Boston University and then pursued his MFA at the California College of Arts and Crafts. He spent the first twenty years of his professional career teaching while continuing to paint for numerous shows and exhibitions at prestigious Northwest galleries. He continues to paint full-time from his studio in Medical Lake, WA. Michael Patterson lives in Great Falls and likes to paint landscapes of the natural beauty he finds abundant in western Montana. A largely self-taught artist who works in oils, Mike has made painting his second career after twenty-seven years of military service. He is an associate member of the Oil Painters of America and a member of the prestigious Montana Painters Alliance. He has been selected for Artist in Residence Galleries in the Flathead and Lewis and Clark National Forests. His work can be found in the Lodestone Gallery, Great Falls, MT and the Creighton-Block Gallery, Big Sky, MT. www.wmpatterson.com Chad Poppleton, a resident of Cache Valley, UT, has been interested in art ever since his boyhood days working with the animals on his grandfather’s ranch. Chad’s father, also an artist, taught him how to draw and observe through an artist’s eye. Studying, sketching, life-painting, and observing an animal’s behavior allows him to identify their characteristics and relay that to the canvas. As an avid sportsman and conservationist he spends as much time in the field as he does at the easel. His paintings are a reflection of his love for animals and the outdoors. “As an artist my objective is to represent the subjects of wildlife correctly and accurately to the best of my ability. Each animal is different and should engage the viewer emotionally within the piece. The viewer should understand the character of the animal.” http://chadpoppleton.com Dave Powell, the son of artists Ace Powell and Nancy McLaughlin Powell, is a fourth generation native of Montana. His father, Ace Powell, was a prolific Western artist whose first childhood paint-box set was a gift from Charlie and Nancy Russell. Dave became a serious student of art in his mid-teens, and has been a professional artist most of his adult life. Because of his vast knowledge of the dress and habits of Western Indians, pioneers and cowboys, Dave is often called upon to provide costumes and props, and to give technical advice about authenticity for films and television. While his film work utilizes his experience and observation, his sculptures, paintings and illustrations are born of his imagination. Dave resides in central Montana, a short drive from Charlie Russell’s home in Great Falls. There he is constantly inspired by the very buttes and prairies that Russell himself loved and painted. Dave was inducted as a member of the prestigious Cowboy Artists of America in 2004: www.cowboyartistsofamerica.com/members/officer/dave_powell.html Tom Quinn, originally from Great Falls, MT, attended Gonzaga University and spent his junior year in Florence. Now in Spokane, Quinn has done several murals and hundreds of easel paintings, has illustrated four books and teaches art at the Spokane Art School, Corbin Art Center and the Institute for Extended Learning. Quinn likes to show what’s absurd but not impossible, to take the ordinary out of context and to turn the familiar into the strange. www.quinntheartist.com Patty Reid lives in the heart of Idaho’s Nez Perce country where she finds much of the inspiration for her paintings. Using brush strokes with vigor and direction, and pastels capturing softness and color, Reid is known for her portraits of children. Cliff Rossberg is an artist inspired by a love for the outdoors and its inhabitants. His oils typically feature North American wildlife with a strong emphasis on landscape. His work has been featured in Western Art Collector, Wildlife Art, U.S. Art and Art of the West. Recent accolades include winning the People’s Choice - Best Painting Award at the 2010 C.M. Russell Art Auction. Rossberg is excited about the direction his pieces are taking and is honored that his collectors appreciate his work. He resides in Great Falls, MT with his studio and residence located along the Missouri River. For Information on new paintings, show schedule, and galleries visit www.RossbergArt.com. Guy Rowbury is inspired by the places he has lived. The Tetons and the Mission Mountains often serve as backdrops for his work. He likes to travel back in time and take a “snapshot” of the past. He favors peaceful scenes that invite you to “walk right in.” Guy works mostly with opaque watercolor (Gouache). He gets a striking richness with it that transparent watercolor doesn’t have and a softness not attainable with acrylic or oil. Guy’s work has been featured in many shows including the C.M. Russell Show in Great Falls, Montana and the Classic American Western Art Show in Beverly Hills, California. Currently His works are featured by Big Horn Galleries, Cody, WY and Montana West Gallery, Ronan, MT.

Her work is featured in the Painter’s Chair Fine Art Gallery, Coeur d’Alene, ID. Stephen Shortridge has been a professional artist for more than 30 years. In the 70’s and 80’s he had a successful acting career, including roles in Welcome Back Kotter, The Love Boat and The Bold and the Beautiful. In 1989 he left acting to pursue his love of art. He has since become a world-renowned painter. “Romantic Impressionism is what I do. . . I think the term best expresses how and why I paint. I appreciate, or try to appreciate, all forms of art, but the one that first stirred me was Impressionism. To me it was bold, and full of life and color. It was uninhibited and had a magic quality to it. Rather than attempt to tell you something accurately, it just made you feel it! That’s why I set out to interpret life through this style of art; it invites the viewers’ emotions to take part.” Stephen and his wife, Cathy, live in Coeur d’Alene, ID, where they own The Painter’s Chair Fine Art Gallery. Rick Singer and Hilary Hart are artists living and working in Spokane, WA. Rick has been creating extraordinary photography for 31 years. The artist grew up in the Great Lakes region of the Midwest between Detroit and Chicago. She is an artist from her earliest memory. “Crayons making lines on paper; what could be better?” www.elstewart.com

In the late 1970’s he taught drawing and painting at the Corbin Art Center. In 1978 Darrell and his wife started Ra-Tel’s Art Supply in Spokane, WA. He has been honored by the National Geographic Society, the Smithsonian, and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and has received the Clymer Award of Excellence and the Blackfoot Valley Art Auction Gold Award. He is a member of the Oil Painters of America and has been featured in four national art magazines. www.randyvanbeek.com Robert Walton’s paintings reflect his experiences and his love of the outdoors. He was included in the Favell Museum Collection in 1988 and became a Leanin’ Tree artist in 1989. He has been an invited artist and poster artist for many shows. Robert is a member of the O.P.A. www.robertwalton.com

Richard Warrington is an impressionistic sculptor, designing two- and three-dimensional original or limited addition hollow form and silhouette sculptures. His simple human-like forms work as a unit entwined and playing off each other sometimes whimsically, other times dramatically. Powder coated aluminum is his preferred medium, but he also works in stainless steel, bronze and cast acrylics. Sizes range from table to monumental and are suitable for corporate settings, residences, gardens, and public settings. In 1982, he began gathering national attention with the group “World of Art International’” which exhibited throughout Canada and has been building a very successful artistic career ever since. His talent is recognized and appreciated by casual audiences and sophisticated art collectors alike and his artwork can be found in collections all over the world. His works are featured at the Stephen Lowe Art Gallery, Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Ken Yuhasz uses neon glass to create works of art. His neon sculptures generally fall into two categories. One is based on ideas that utilize found objects, embellished with neon and argon-filled glass tubing, in an effort to suggest humorous themes to interest the artist and viewer. The second group includes facsimile constructions of actual objects that use different materials than the original, and also use glass tubing to illuminate the finished piece. As a teenager, he worked with an 80year young gentleman repairing household appliances and came to appreciate the style and craftsmanship of those common things. Adding colorful tubing assists the viewer to see pieces of Ken’s life through a slightly tweaked lens. The prosaic nature of the object is readily apparent, but the view now emphasizes a new, whimsical reading. www.acmeglassworks.com
