United States ‘will always have Israel’s back’ in my view

Why, Mr Obama? By Zakaria K local@kuwaittimes.net

O

ne would be forgiven for thinking that President Obama was actually the president of Israel and not the United States. Listening to him go on and on about the importance of “having your back” in reference to the Israelis and the importance of preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons to protect the Israelis. The maintenance of the sovereignty of Israel. This is the same banter that is spoken by many American presidents prior to an election, although I don’t remember a president doing it with such enthusiasm before. We understand that would-be American presidents must pay homage to Jewish lobbies, however the sudden change of tone that Obama has displayed was nothing short of breathtaking. The only time I can remember such a sudden 180degree change in direction is when I was watching a demonstration of the new Ferrari Italia. What happened to the Obama who was pressuring the Israelis to accept a Palestinian state not that long ago! I recall the excitement amongst many Arabs when he spoke in Egypt. We all rejoiced in thinking that here was an American president who is fair and just or at least on the fence when it came to the Palestinian issue. How naive were we! Obama spent a good time in his recent speech talking about Iran and terrorism in the region. The president also made references to Syria on a few occasions. Let me be clear, I have no love lost for either of these regimes. However, it’s the lack of mention of the Israeli regime that was exasperating. Why was there no mention of the atrocities the Israeli army is involved in and has been involved in against the Palestinian children since the 1950s? Terrorism and acts of inhumanity should be highlighted and stopped by the international community. However let’s not broadcast homemade videos of acts of violence from Syria and completely ignore the ones happening a few kilometers away on Palestinian soil. President Obama highlighted the fact that Israel and the United States shared many interests including economic ones. Actually, Mr President, the economic interests that the United States share with all the Muslim countries in the Middle East are much more substantial. The economic interests shared by us in the Middle East and Europe are also far more valuable for the Europeans than their relationship with the Israelis. Times are changing Mr President. The economic situation worldwide has left many countries and families struggling to make ends meet. The Arabs and the Europeans are more interested in trying to move forward politically, socially and more importantly economically. We don’t want to be dragged into a war that is in no one’s interest except Israel’s. The Arabs, the Europeans and most of all the American people do not want to be forced into a military conflict for the sake of Israeli peace of mind. If President Obama pulls his nose away from Israel’s backside long enough to see the rest of the world, he will realize that too. Let me set the record straight. I absolutely resent dictators. I believe the death penalty is too soft a punishment for those who commit acts of terror. I believe the international community should not hesitate to bring terrorists to justice and those who support them. I believe that the majority of Americans are good hardworking citizens who do not share the president’s love for Israel and its international interests. I also strongly believe that Iran is not stupid enough to support acts of terrorism on American soil. Those who benefit from making us believe that are those who want an excuse for a preemptive strike on Iran. At the end of the day, this is just a small article written by someone who enjoys a good conspiracy theory...!

WASHINGTON: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told US President Barack Obama yesterday that Israel must remain the “master of its fate” in a firm defense of his right to mount a unilateral strike on Iran. Netanyahu and Obama met for delicate Oval Office talks taking place amid clear differences on the imminence of the nuclear threat from Iran and after weeks of speculation that Israel may mount go-it-alone military action. “Israel must have the ability always to defend itself, by itself, against any threat,” Netanyahu said in a short, but impassioned comments to cameras at the start of a meeting with Obama, with whom he has had sometimes strained relations. “After all, that is the very purpose of the Jewish state, to restore to the Jewish people control over our destiny. That’s why my supreme responsibility as prime minister of Israel is to ensure that Israel remains the master of its fate,” said Netanyahu, who ruffled Obama’s feathers last year with a stunning lecture in the Oval Office. The Obama administration has signaled that it does not yet believe Iran has taken a choice to develop a nuclear weapon, or that the time is right for military action, preferring to give biting new sanctions time to work. Israel, which sees an Iranian nuclear weapon as a threat to its existence, however believes that Iran may be on the cusp of “break out” capacity - the moment when it could quickly produce weapons-grade uranium. Obama recognized that it was “unacceptable” for Israel to tolerate Iran developing a nuclear weapon after Continued on Page 13

Ashour to file new Assembly’s first quiz Oppn targets finance minister • Rights panel to tour jail By B Izzak KUWAIT: Shiite MP Saleh Ashour is expected to file the first grilling of the new National Assembly today against Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah who is outside the country undergoing medical checkups. Ashour had said the grilling will be based on four issues: the illegal bank deposits scandal, the money transfer scandal, maltreatment of Shiite clerics and a fourth issue he declined to reveal. Ashour and 12 former MPs had been questioned by the public prosecution for allegedly accepting millions of dinars illegally into their local bank accounts. All the other former MPs either lost in the February election or did not contest. All the alleged violations had been

committed under the previous government and former prime minister Sheikh Nasser Mohammad Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, of whom Ashour was a staunch supporter. Ashour had been also accused of criticizing former opposition MPs who had filed to question the former prime minister over the same issues. The opposition has said it will not oppose the grilling just because it came from a supporter of the former prime minister, but will study it carefully before announcing a stance. Islamist MP Abdullah Al-Barghash said the opposition will not also agree to refer the grilling to the constitutional court or the Assembly’s legal and legislative committee but will support its debate. In a move seen as a preparation for grilling Finance Minister Mustafa AlShamali, opposition MP Abdulrahman Al-

Anjari yesterday sent a series of questions to the minister about the state’s local investment portfolios. Anjari demanded details about who authorized the investments into a number of local companies. Anjari and another leading opposition MP Musallam Al-Barrak had threatened to grill Shamali. Chairman of the Assembly’s human rights committee MP Adel Al-Damkhi said yesterday the committee will visit prisoners at the central jail to examine their situation before embarking on a number of resolutions and draft laws. Damkhi said the committee’s visit will include writer Mohammad Al-Mulaifi who has been remanded in police custody for 21 days pending trial on charges that he wrote derogator y remarks against Shiites. Mulaifi has been accused

Saudis flex Gulf grip with Bahrain ‘union’ DUBAI: During a sermon last week at Bahrain’s Grand Mosque, the pro-government prayer leader offered sweeping praise for one of the Arab Spring’s counter-revolutions: Gulf rulers bonding together against dissent with powerful Saudi Arabia as their main guardian. The widening Saudi security stamp on the region is already taking shape in Bahrain, where more than a year of Shiite-led unrest shows no sign of easing and the Saudi influence over the embattled Sunni monarchy is on public display. of state security charges of attempting to dismantle the basic foundations of the society in addition to disparaging a sect in the society that could trigger social rifts. The writer has denied the charges, saying that he only wrote an analysis on the Shiites’ performance in the general elections and how various Shiite groups behaved in the Feb 2 parliamentary polls. Damkhi said that representatives of civil societies will join the committee in the visit and thanked the interior minister for allowing them. Damkhi, a wellknown rights activist before he was elected to the Assembly in February, said the committee’s top priorities is to establish an independent authority for human rights in addition to a draft law on Continued on Page 13

news Kuwait releases Iraqi fishermen

KUWAIT: Kuwait briefly detained an Iraqi fishing boat with 11 men on board that had crossed into the state’s territorial waters, a border security official said yesterday. The fishermen and their boat were handed over to Iraq in line with accords between the two states, said Kuwait’s assistant undersecretary for border security affairs, Major General Mohammad Al-Sabah Mohammad Yussef Al-Sabah, without giving dates. Another security official told AFP the men were detained on Sunday. Iraqi fishermen have repeatedly complained of harassment by Kuwaiti and Iranian coast guards, but Kuwait maintains they are detained only when they cross into territorial waters.

Kuwait appoints 3 members at CMA DUBAI: Kuwait named three new commissioners to the state’s fledging Capital Markets Authority (CMA), state news agency KUNA said, ending a protracted dispute. The CMA, formally launched in 2011 more than 30 years after the stock market was established, had seen three of its original five commissioners removed by Cabinet decree last October. Local media reports said the men were removed for violating CMA laws by holding other jobs at the same time. The market regulator filed a court challenge to the decree, saying it alone was responsible for enforcing its regulations. KUNA said yesterday the Cabinet had issued a draft decree appointing the three new members - Basel Al-Haroun, Faisal Al-Fahad and Mishal AlOsaimi - in its weekly meeting. The CMA was set up to provide a steadying hand for the Gulf’s third largest stock market in terms of capitalisation, after Saudi Arabia and Qatar.
