Iraq urges Kuwait to review compensation KUWAIT: An Iraqi MP close to Prime Minister Nuri AlMaliki urged Kuwait to review the billions of dollars of war compensation it demands for Saddam Hussein’s 1990 invasion, in comments published yesterday. “Iraq has paid large compensation to our neighbour Kuwait ... and it’s time to review the details of those compensations, especially after Iraq regained its sovereignty” from the US, Abdulhadi Al-Hassani told Al-Dar daily. Hassani said that besides war reparations, Kuwait has taken over 16 oil wells in the southern border area of Safwan and additional Iraqi territory and agricultural land as a result of a 1993 UN border demarcation resolution.

Kuwait ‘interested’ in Rafale fighters PARIS: Qatar and Kuwait are interested in buying French Rafale fighter jets but are waiting to see whether the United Arab Emirates will make a purchase first, France’s defence minister said yesterday. “They are in effect interested but they won’t know for sure until the first one jumps in,” minister Gerard Longuet said. Industry experts have estimated that Kuwait needs 18-22 new fighter jets and that Qatar needs 24. After opening talks on the purchase in 2008, the UAE said in November that the offer for Rafales from France’s Dassault Aviation was uncompetitive.

Leading liberal candidate and former MP Mohammad Jassem Al-Saqer said constitutional reforms have become inevitable whether they relate to increasing the number of MPs from the current 50 or appointing ministers. Speaking before the first meeting organized by youth activists, Saqer questioned why members of the ruling Al-Sabah family should continue to dominate around a third of the 15-member Cabinet. He also questioned why the ruling family should keep its grip on the so-called sovereign ministries like foreign, defence and interior, but insisted that the choice of the prime minister is the sole authority of HH the Amir. Saqer denied that the main purpose of contesting the 2012 elections after he declined to run in the 2008 and 2009 polls is to run for the speakership post, but he kept the door open for him to contest the post. Jassem Al-Khorafi, who was the speaker between 1999 and 2011, opted out of the election race while former threetime speaker Ahmad Al-Saadoun is running and is expected to contest the post. Speaking at the same meeting, prominent liberal and former MP Meshari Al-Ossaimi attributed the deterioration of situation in Kuwait in the past several years in part to feuding within the ruling family. Saqer said that no Arab country is immune to the Arab Spring and Continued on Page 13
