GCC condemns anti-Islam film as violence explodes Bahrain blocks websites; Muslims fume
DUBAI: The Gulf Cooperation Council yesterday condemned an anti-Islam film as well as the violence it has triggered, as Bahrain ordered that websites carrying the movie be blocked. “This film cannot be accepted or excused as it abuses the feelings of Muslims and non-Muslims who reject insulting prophets, religions and beliefs,” GCC Secretary General Abdullatif Al-Zayani said in a statement. Zayani also “condemned acts of violence against US embassies in some countries,” adding that “our anger... is no excuse to such carry out such attacks that only serve the low and suspicious aims of those who produced it.” The GCC chief called for the issue to be dealt with “wisely” and for those who carry out or support such attacks to be punished. Meanwhile, Bahrain’s Interior Minister Sheikh Rashed bin Abdullah al-Khalifa ordered “the blocking and stopping of websites carrying the film mocking” the Muslim Prophet Mohammed, according to state news agency BNA. Citizens were urged “not to participate in broadcasting the film by sharing it on social media networks,” and advised against allowing their children to watch it. Protests over a trailer for the anti-Islam film on YouTube first broke out Tuesday in Egypt and Libya, where the US consulate in Benghazi came under attack by an armed mob which killed the US ambassador and three other Americans. The protests have since spread across other Arab and Muslim countries. The low-budget movie “Innocence of Muslims,” in which actors have strong American accents, portrays Muslims as immoral and gratuitously violent. It pokes fun at the Prophet Mohammed and touches on themes of paedophilia and homosexuality. Meanwhile, Kuwait yesterday strongly condemned the production of a movie that deliberately defamed the Prophet Mohammad and Islam and has voiced grave concern over the violent reactions that took place in a number of countries against American interests. KUWAIT: An Iranian Parliamentary Security Committee said that it did not overlook the option of “interfering” in Kuwait to protect Shiites from “terrorists who are arming against them”. He added that the GCC military interference in Bahrain will not happen again in Kuwait. A senior military Iranian leader, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said that both Badr and AlQuds corps are readily stationed near the Iraqi-Kuwaiti borders and that they are militarily qualified and equipped to interfere in any neighboring country to protect ‘AlAl-Bayt’ [The family of the Prophet]. Moreover, Mohammed Kareem Abedi, a member of the Iranian Parliamentary
National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, said that his committee had reviewed reports on the measures suggested to protect Shiites in Kuwait in case of any instability. “We have been following the situation and have received information about terrorist calls demanding revenge from Al-Al-Bayt”, he said, underscoring that Iran’s interference would be to protect Shiites the same way GCC states justified entering Bahrain to protect Sunnis. “Those who believe that they are a match for Iran do not realize that whenever it takes, the Islamic Republic of Iran can threaten the security of GCC regimes”, he added. He also noted that Iran is militarily a major power and has long arms to reach everywhere.
