UAE to naturalise ‘foreign’ children DUBAI: The president of the United Arab Emirates has issued a decree granting citizenship to more than 1,000 children of Emirati women married to foreigners, the official WAM news agency reported yesterday. “President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed AlNahayan has issued decrees granting citizenship to 1,117 children of UAE women married to foreigners who satisfied requirements for citizenship,” WAM reported. The children will receive full citizenship when they reach the age of 18, the agency said. Most Arab countries link nationality to blood relation from the father’s side, disenfranchising women who face various forms of gender discrimination across the region.

Bahrain Formula 1 tickets go on sale MANAMA: Bahrain Grand Prix officials began selling tickets yesterday for April’s Formula One race in the Gulf kingdom, the latest sign the government is determined to hold the race despite ongoing protests. Bahrain’s season-opening race last year was canceled because of the unrest. This year’s race is scheduled for April 22 and F1’s governing body FIA has insisted the event will go ahead. There have been lingering doubts, though, over the viability of holding the race, given the continued political unrest that has paralyzed parts of the capital Manama. Along with the ticket launch, officials announced this year’s slogan: Unif1ed-One Nation in Celebration.

KUWAIT: The opposition “majority” yesterday agreed to set its priorities for the current National Assembly term and appointed a seven-man committee to prepare a list of the most pressing issues along with the dates of discussion, MP Mohammad Al-Dallal said. All blocs and independent MPs who are part of the opposition group of 35 MPs were asked to submit their proposals within two days to the coordination committee which will finalize the issues before Thursday, said Dallal, who hosted the opposition meeting attended by 33 MPs. The opposition also agreed to submit proposals to form two parliamentary probe committees into the corruption scandal involving former MPs and the allegations that the former prime minister transferred public funds into his private foreign bank accounts. NYPD monitored Muslim students NEW YORK: The New York Police Department monitored Muslim college students far more broadly than previously known, at schools far beyond the city limits, including the elite Ivy League colleges of Yale and the University of Pennsylvania, AP has learned. Police talked with local authorities about professors 480 km away in Buffalo and even sent an undercover agent on a whitewater rafting trip, where he recorded students’ names and noted in police intelligence files how many times they prayed. KUWAIT: The Criminal Court sentenced a Kuwaiti couple to death yesterday after they were convicted of the first degree murder of their Filipina housemaid. “This sentence is a testimony of justice and in line with all religious canons that call for punishment of criminals,” said the victim’s lawyer Sheikha Fawziya AlSabah in her first public statement following the court’s ruling. In mid-July 2010, 34-year-old Asria Samad Abdul was tortured by her employers before being run over several times by a car. After their arrest, the couple confessed they mistreated the maid daily and when they feared she would die, they took her to an uninhabited area in Kabd and crushed her to death under their vehicle to give an impression that it was a hit-and-run accident. Police later found out that the couple had earlier mistreated several other housemaids. Sheikha Fawziya said she would demand for a “large financial compensation for the victim’s children who became orphaned as a result of this misfortune”. “The victim came to Kuwait looking for a better life, but her fate led her to two criminals who murdered her and disposed her body in the desert for no crime she committed,” she said. The lawyer stressed she will continue representing the victim’s children in the case until they obtain the compensation she is demanding for. The couple has the right to appeal the sentence. “We were confident on the impartiality of the Kuwaiti justice system and the capability of Sheikha Fawziya Al-Sabah to uphold justice for the late Asria Abdul,” Rea Oreta, Philippine Vice Consul to Kuwait, said in a statement, adding that she hopes that the case would further strengthen the resolve of Filipino Overseas Workers to fight for their rights.
