French cartoons fuel Muslim fury France braces for backlash, shuts embassies, bans demos

PARIS: Fresh protests erupted in the Muslim world yesterday over an anti-Islam film as a French magazine added fuel to the fire with the publication of obscene cartoons depicting Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). France braced for a backlash over the cartoons, stepping up security at its embassies and banning demonstrations on its own soil as senior officials and Muslim leaders appealed for calm. More than 30 people have been killed in attacks or violent protests linked to the controversial US-made film “Innocence of Muslims”, including 12 people who died in an attack by a female suicide bomber in Afghanistan on Tuesday. Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Elaraby called the drawings outrageous but said those who were offended by them should “use peaceful means to express their firm rejection”. Tunisia’s ruling Islamist party, Ennahda, condemned what it called an act of “aggression” against Muhammad (PBUH) but urged Muslims not to fall into a trap intended to “derail the Arab Spring and turn it into a conflict with the West”. In Egypt, Essam Erian, acting head of the Muslim Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice Party, told Reuters: “We reject and condemn the French cartoons that dishonour the Prophet (PBUH) and we condemn any action that defames the sacred according to people’s beliefs.” In the northern Paris suburb of Sarcelles, one person was slightly hurt when two masked men threw a small explosive device through the window of a kosher supermarket. Police said it was too early to link the incident to the cartoons. One small local Muslim group filed a legal complaint against the weekly but there were no reports of reaction on the streets of France. In Pakistan yesterday, around 1,000 students from the fundamentalist Jamaat-e-Islami party took to the streets in the eastern city Lahore, chanting anti-US slogans and burning the American flag.

Campaign of hatred By Badrya Darwish

esterday was the United States. Today it is France. Tomorrow, I do not know where. What is this vicious attack against Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)? Why now all of a sudden? There is a history of insulting Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) with mocking cartoons, which ended up with the boycott of Danish products all over the Arab world. When the incident happened, the Prime Minister of Denmark had to come out, apologize and try to mend relations with the Arab world. Why the unnecessary animosity and hatred today seven years later? The Prophet (PBUH) is not here anymore. That means that whoever is doing the insults simply aims to abuse Muslim feelings. He has no other agenda. This now looks like a campaign. It is not an individual act to pin on a guy under probation. It is not just a stupid whim coming from a narrow-minded and failed filmmaker. We thought we could blame it on the silliness of a person. But when such acts are repeated again by a wellknown French publication, then such insults are not innocent. It is meant as an insult to the whole Muslim world - over a billion of people spread all over the world. Many people living in countries as far apart as Japan, the United States and Asia, Latin America and the Arab world are Muslims. Many Muslims live in Europe. There is no country in the world without a Muslim population. I am sure in the surroundings of the Vatican there are Muslims. Why the targeted abuse then? Right after the furor over the film, a famous USbased publication tried to rub salt into the wound with their abusive cover story called “Muslim Rage”. I do not buy that it is about freedom of speech anymore. This seems like a very calculated and wellstudied move. It is a campaign of hatred. It has a certain agenda. Do not accuse the Muslims of being terrorists. Those who abuse and intentionally attack religions and prophets should be held responsible. I do not buy the talk of freedom of opinion and expression. How about the freedom to publish the pictures of Kate Middleton topless? The palace in the UK banned the publication of the princess’ pictures. Why doesn’t an international body come up with laws and regulation, such as the one they all proudly took part in calling it “the war on terror”. I have repeated many times that terror has many faces. It is not just about bombs and murder. It is not just about angry crowds burning flags or throwing stones at an embassy building. Abusing other people’s feelings intentionally is worse. It is the worst kind of terror because it is hidden. I am sure that there are international networks behind this. I am quite confident and sure that the West’s secret police will discover who is behind this because even if there is a Muslim in the middle of nowhere, they can find him. How about the perpetrators now? What will be their punishment and who will punish them?

The sources said such sponsors will be held liable as per the law. They added that security and safety of the public is the main concern in all governorates. Meanwhile, inspectors from the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor also launched a surprise inspection campaign yesterday in Jleeb Al-Shuyoukh and Farwaniya that resulted in exposing a large number of fake companies. Assistant undersecretary for labor affairs Jamal Al-Doussari said the fake companies were rented offices without any staff working in them. He added that such offices are rented for certain periods in an attempt to circumvent the law until workers are brought from abroad. The “companies” are then closed and open only for inspections. “More raids will be conducted all over Kuwait and all legal actions will be taken against violators,” Doussari said, calling for closing down the violating companies’ dossiers with the ministry. He added the government will prevent violating companies from having any work permits issued for them unless they can prove that the workers actually work for them.

Iranian FM meets Assad DAMASCUS: Iran’s foreign minister met embattled Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad yesterday, calling for a Syrian solution to the civil war, as a rights watchdog accused Damascus of waging “relentless, indiscriminate” attacks against its own people. Speaking on arriving in Damascus, Ali Akbar Salehi said a solution to the 18month conflict lies “only in Syria and within the Syrian family”. Salehi, who called this week for a simultaneous halt to the fighting by both regime and rebel forces, added this should be done in “partnership with international and regional organisations”. Following their meeting, Assad said the war engulfing Syria was targeting not only it but the “axis of resistance”, a term Syria, Iran and Lebanon’s Shiite movement Hezbollah use to refer to their common opposition to Israel. No raise in haj quotas ‘Syrians not barred’ RIYADH: Saudi Arabia has rejected requests by 40 countries to increase their haj quota this year because of development projects now under way in the two holy cities of Makkah and Madinah, local dailies said yesterday.
