uys I am so angry. I came straight from the airport to the office of the newspaper to express my anger in writing. I just landed at Kuwait Airport at 5 o’clock. There was no other airline which landed at that hour, but we had to wait 45 minutes for the conveyer belt to make its squelching noises that the luggage is coming out. What is going on in Kuwait? Don’t we care for our country? Even at airports of poor countries, your luggage will be on the conveyer after 5 to 10 minutes. There were no 10 aircraft that landed at the same time. It was the only flight that landed from Amman and not a single conveyor was busy. The three conveyers were empty. We still had to wait and wait and wait. The wait was so long in fact that it seemed like a performance. When the first suitcase came out of the luggage compartment, they all clapped and said hooray. Just imagine! What is the parliament busy with these days? We have parliaments after parliaments and cabinets after new cabinets. Continued on Page 2

Gulf war games begin in Kuwait KUWAIT: Joint Gulf force the Peninsula Shield began a 17-day exercise in Kuwait yesterday as officials said the war games were not related to unrest in the region. “The exercise was prescheduled and agreed for years. It is unrelated to any regional or political events,” the head of Kuwaiti army public relations, Brigadier Abdulaziz Al-Rayes, was cited as saying by KUNA. It aims at “activating the concept of joint defence... and implementing the unified defence strategy of the Gulf Cooperation Council states,” he said. The main part of the exercise will take place in the Kuwaiti desert, but naval and air forces will also feature in the manoeuvres slated to end on Feb 26, coinciding with Kuwait’s national day celebrations. General Rayes did not give details of troop numbers taking part, but did say the exercise would include units from Kuwait’s national guard and the interior ministry. Kuwait marks its 51st independence from Britain on Feb 25 and the 22nd anniversary of liberation from seven months of Iraqi occupation on Feb 26 in which units from the Peninsula Shield took part. The Peninsula Shield force was formed by the six GCC member states - Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates - in 1982 as a 5,000-strong force but has since expanded to more than 30,000 troops. Two years ago, Peninsula Shield troops were deployed in Sunni-ruled Bahrain to help the kingdom’s security forces confront protests led by the Shiite majority. Kuwait has witnessed street protests in the past several months by opposition groups calling for the dissolution of the pro-government parliament elected on Dec 1 after HH the Amir amended a controversial electoral law. — AFP

KUWAIT: The court of appeals yesterday suspended the implementation of the three-year jail terms against three former opposition MPs who were handed the harsh sentence by the lower court last week. The lower court’s ruling sentenced the former MPs and ordered that they go to jail immediately even before the appeals court can look into their case. But the appeals court, which opened the hearing into the case, decided to suspend the implementation of the jail sentence until after their appeals had been settled by the court itself. The former opposition MPs Khaled Al-Tahous, Falah AlSawwagh and Bader Al-Dahoum

attended the session and the judge ordered their detention briefly before he issued his ruling to free them but asked them to pay a bail of KD 5,000 each and set March 10 as the date for the next hearing to hear the testimony of the investigating officer. The decision means that as long as the appeals court continues to hear the case, police will not be able to arrest them for the same case. Tahous, Sawwagh and Dahoum were sentenced to three years in jail last week for allegedly insulting HH the Amir through addresses at a public rally on Oct 10. They had categorically denied the charge. Protests broke out last week after the ruling which also prompted opposition calls for unity.

Opposition groups were expected to form a unified coalition to press for democratic demands. Youth activists have been staging sit-ins outside the Palace of Justice every night until midnight in protest against jailing activists for expressing opinions. So far, at least four youth activists have been jailed for between two to 10 years for allegedly undermining the status of the Amir and his authorities. Many more are on trial over similar charges. Meanwhile, grillings from members of the pro-government National Assembly are rolling as Shiite MP Faisal Al-Duwaisan yesterday filed to grill the interior minister for allegedly dealing with Israel and Continued on Page 2
