Court reinstates pro-opposition Al-Youm channel
By B Izzak KUWAIT: The National Assembly yesterday approved with a comfortable majority a government request to postpone the debate of two grilling of the ministers of communications and interior until the next term starting late October as the prime minister praised the decision as “wise”. Shiite MPs Hussein Al-Qallaf and Faisal AlDuwaisan, who filed the two grillings respectively, strongly protested against the government request and later against the Assembly’s decision, accusing MPs of being tools in the hands of the government. The Assembly appears determined to vote to postpone two more grillings submitted on Monday against the ministers of oil and finance when their turn comes up for debate after two weeks. Veteran pro-government MP Khalaf Dumaitheer said the large number of grillings indicated some foul play against the Assembly and not to serve public interest. Qallaf alleges in his grilling that Communications Minister Salem Al-Othaina has com-
mitted a series of administrative violations regarding reinstating a number of senior employees involved in a variety of violations and who had been subjected to a probe. Othaina however told the Assembly that he was not running away from facing the accusations and refuting them, but the country has suffered a lot because of political disputes until the Amir defused the situation by amending the electoral law. He and state minister for planning Rola Dashti stressed that submitting grillings in this way is not helpful to the stability and the productivity of the Assembly itself. The two government requests were approved by around 40 MPs, including Cabinet ministers, and opposed by around 23 lawmakers with one abstention. The Assembly did not set an exact date for the debate of the grillings in the next term. Under the law, the minister can request a delay of the grilling for two weeks and he will be granted that automatically but any Continued on Page 2
Saudi women take seats in Shura for first time RIYADH: Thirty Saudi women took seats in Saudi Arabia’s Shura Council, for the first time in the ultraconservative kingdom’s history, as they were sworn in before King Abdullah yesterday at his palace in Riyadh. The women took their seats in the same room with their 130 male colleagues and were sworn in collectively, state television said. “The development we are working at must be gradual,” King Abdullah said in a brief statement broadcast on state television. He recommended that the council show “realism” in its discussions and allow “reason to prevail in issues it
has to deal” with. On Jan 11, the king appointed the women, which include university graduates, human rights activists and two princesses, to the body, also known as the Saudi Consultative Council. His decree marked a breakthrough in the kingdom that imposes stringent restrictions on women, who are banned from driving and denied the right to travel without the consent of a male guardian. The monarch took the decisions following consultations with religious leaders in Saudi Arabia, which applies a strict version of Islamic sharia law. — AFP (See Page 7)
