reat! A new Cabinet was announced yesterday. To begin with, what is the idea of all this reshuffling? It is more or less the old Cabinet with a few new faces. Of course the sovereign ministries remained unchanged, thank God for that, except for Sheikh Mohammad Al-Abdullah AlSabah who was relieved from having two portfolios - Minister of Health and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs. I am sure he does not regret handing over the Ministry of Health which caused him a lot of health issues. I feel sorry for the young man because the minute he was given this extra portfolio, the parliament attacked him and started threatening to grill him. He was not even given a chance to step in the ministry’s door when he was forced to face a grilling for all the accumulated sins of the deteriorating ministry in years past. Mabrouk, Sheikh Mohammad! At last you can feel relief from all the grillings! This does not mean that the rest of the ministers will not be grilled. The parliament already issued threats that if the Cabinet does not attend today’s session, they will grill them. Of course, we ended up with only one lady in the new Cabinet. Thekra Rasheedi is out and so is Rola Dashti. There is one question on my mind right now. If a minister enters a ministry and appoints many members of his family, do these poor members now have to face the same destiny as the departing minister? Or does the reshuffle not apply to them? This is a good lesson for all ministers. When they are in charge of a ministry, they should appoint people based on merit and avoid friendships and nepotism. OK, if there was corruption in one ministry and the minister resigns, does the new minister have to bear the consequences? Or would the old minister resign and the chapter gets closed. I hope somebody can enlighten me on this because I do not understand the reshuffling of portfolios. Is it done to finish a job somewhere and then the case is closed? Good luck to all the newcomers! The never-ending grilling series of 2014 will soon commence. We just have to wait and watch. In all honesty, as a journalist I cannot keep up remembering the names and posts of the ministers who change all the time. Let’s hope 2014 brings more stability to our great parliament and Cabinet which, of course, would mean greater stability for our economy.

‘Polar vortex’ slams US
Iraqis riot as jet lands in Kuwait
By A Saleh
KUWAIT: Fifteen Iraqi passengers rioted onboard a Turkish flight that made an emergency landing at Kuwait International Airport while en route to Basra, said security sources. Due to bad weather conditions, the pilot decided to make an emergency landing in Kuwait where he waited for 45 minutes. After determining that the weather conditions in Basra would not improve soon, he decided to fly back to Istanbul. This angered the Iraqi passengers, who assaulted the cabin crew and forced open the plane doors to prevent the pilot from taking off. Kuwait Airport security intervened and took the Iraqi passengers to a nearby hotel pending arrangement of another flight to take them to Basra, after the Turkish pilot and crew decided against pressing charges.

CHICAGO: A “polar vortex” dropped over a huge section of the United States yesterday, sending temperatures plunging across the Midwest as the East Coast braced for the bitter Arctic blast. Meteorologists predicted the lowest temperatures in two decades in some areas of the country, with the mercury at -37 Celsius in Milwaukee. Icy roads and snow storms created travel chaos, with thousands of flights canceled or delayed. The northeastern United States has endured heavy snow and deadly freezing conditions since the start of the year, and the extreme cold has claimed about a dozen lives nationwide. “The coldest weather in years will be making its presence known from the Upper Midwest to the Mid-Atlantic region for the beginning of the work week,” the National Weather Service said. Wind chill warnings were in effect from Montana as far south as Tennessee and Alabama, with temperatures feeling as cold as -50 degrees Fahrenheit, it said, describing the conditions as “lifethreatening”. On the East Coast, a brief lull in the deep freeze greeted commuters yesterday, but temperatures were expected to drop by 40 degrees overnight. In Milwaukee, on the shores of Lake Michigan, officials warned residents to stay indoors and urged schools to shut down. “Police are reaching out to homeless citizens in order to help them find the nearest shelter,” city spokeswoman Sarah DeRoo told AFP. All schools were closed in Minnesota. In Cook County in Illinois, which includes Chicago, warming centers were opened for anyone suffering, including those whose home heating did not work.
