Taleban ‘down’ US drone, Laden compound razed MIRANSHAH, Pakistan: A US drone may have crashed yesterday in North Waziristan, not far from the Afghan border, Pakistan intelligence officials said, and Taleban militants said they had shot it down. Taleban militants led by Hafiz Gul Bahadur said they had collected wreckage of the destroyed drone and would provide its pictures to the media yesterday. Pakistani security officials, however, said they did not know what caused the drone to crash. “A drone aircraft was seen going down in Machikhel and flames were seen,” a Pakistani intelligence official said. “We don’t know what caused it to go down. We are investigating.” Another official said the drone had gone down in an area controlled by militants, about 30 km from the Afghan border. “The local Taleban have the wreckage,” he said. A US official later denied Taleban claims that the militants shot down the drone, but declined further comment. “The drone today in Machikhel was flying at low altitude and our fighters fired at and shot it down,” a local commander of the Taleban said. “We have trained people for such type of job.” He said his men had been collecting the wreckage when the Continued on Page 13
KUWAIT: Hundreds of revellers turned out on Gulf Road yesterday to celebrate the National Day despite pouring rain and the cancellation of a number of parades. Families gathered along the seafront to watch passing cars decorated with Kuwaiti flags and pictures of HH the Amir, some huddled under tents put up by the public. Children, seemingly affected by the weather, sprayed passing cars with water from their toy guns. People also gathered at the Youm Al Bahar Village on the seaside near Shuwaikh. In general, no foam sprays were noticed during the celebrations after these were banned and not sold officially. An outdoor show that was supposed to be held at the Salam Beach in Shuwaikh was postponed to today due to the rainy and windy weather, as the stage was full of water and it was not possible for the performers to present the show. Another parade that was planned in the afternoon on Gulf Road - starting from the Military Officers Club towards the Kuwait Towers - was canceled as well. In this parade, vehicles of different state authorities were supposed to participate in addition to cartoon characters. Continued on Page 13

Palestinians clash with Israel troops at funeral AL-RAM: Palestinians and Israeli troops clashed on the edge of Jerusalem for a second day yesterday after the funeral of a protester killed the previous day. “Rocks, fire bombs and burning tyres were hurled at soldiers,” a military statement said. “After exhausting all other means, rubber pellets were used.” At least nine Palestinians were injured in the clashes following the funeral in the West Bank neighbourhood of Al-Ram, adjacent to Israeli-annexed east Jerusalem, an AFP photographer reported. About 2,000 mourners, some firing automatic rifles into the air, marched with the body of Talaat Abdel-Rahman Ramiya, 23, who was killed on Friday by the army in Al-Ram. That clash was one of a string between Israeli forces and Palestinian protesters angry over violence in the flashpoint Al-Aqsa mosque
compound in Jerusalem’s Old City. Mourners carrying Palestinian flags and banners of the Fatah movement of president Mahmud Abbas yesterday escorted Ramiya’s body to a cemetery in Al-Ram, a few hundred metres north of the Jerusalem city limits. “Millions of martyrs will march on Jerusalem,” they chanted. Palestinian prime minister Salam Fayyad condemned the killing of Ramiya. “ The Israeli government bears full responsibility for this crime,” he said in a statement, adding that that the international community’s lack of pressure on Israel made it complicit in the violence. “The international community’s silence... contributed to further Israeli undermining of our people’s lives and committing this crime. “This situation gives the international community direct responsibility Continued on Page 13

Blast kills 26 as new Yemen prez sworn in SANAA: A suicide bomber blew up a vehicle outside a presidential palace in southeastern Yemen yesterday, killing 26 elite troops and overshadowing the swearing in of the first new president in Sanaa since 1978. AlQaeda claimed responsibility and said the attack had been carried out by a “Yemeni jihadi”. Militants loyal to Al-Qaeda have exploited the decline in central government control that accompanied 10 months of deadly unrest, that forced Saleh to cede power, and seized large swathes of southern and eastern Yemen. “A pick-up truck driven by a suicide bomber exploded at the entrance of the presidential palace in Mukalla,” the military official said. He said the attack “carries the fingerprints of Al-Qaeda,” adding that the bomber “could be Mohammed Al-Sayari,” a Saudi originally from Hadramawt. “The bodies of 20 soldiers were taken to the mortuary and there are many others wounded,” said a medic at Mukalla’s Ibn Sina hospital. Another medic said later that “six others have died of their wounds”, The military source said no high-ranking officials were in the palace when the bomber struck. Continued on Page 13

US advisors killed in Afghan ministry KABUL: A gunman killed two American military advisors inside a heavily guarded government building in the heart of Kabul yesterday as protests over the burning of the Holy Quran at a US base raged across the country for a fifth day. The Taleban claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it was retaliation for the Quran burnings, and the NATO commander recalled all international military personnel working in Afghan ministries in the capital. US officials said the assailant remained at large and a manhunt was under way. An apology from President Barack Obama has failed to quell public outrage over what NATO insisted was an accidental desecration of the Quran. At least 28 people have been killed and hundreds wounded since Tuesday, when it first emerged that Qurans and other religious materials had been thrown into a fire pit used to burn garbage at Bagram Air
Field, a large US base north of Kabul. Among those dead were two US soldiers who were killed Thursday by one of their Afghan counterparts while a riot raged outside their base in the eastern province of Nangarhar. Gen. John Allen, the commander of NATO and US forces in Afghanistan, said he recalled all NATO personnel from the ministries “for obvious force protection reasons” but the alliance remains committed to its partnership with the Afghan government. He said NATO is investigating yesterday’s shooting and will pursue all leads to find the person responsible for the attack. “The perpetrator of this attack is a coward whose actions will not go unanswered,” Allen said. NATO forces have advisers embedded in many Afghan ministries, both as trainers and to help manage the transition to Afghan control and foreign forces Continued on Page 13
