he new Cabinet was finally announced and sworn into office yesterday. There was hope that the delay in forming the government could be a blessing in disguise to give time for our politicians to revise their agendas and to calm down Kuwait’s intense political field. However, that was shortlived as the same old faces in parliament have promised to question this Cabinet today. It seems that the resignations of the Cabinet and the dissolutions of the parliament only serve as temporary tranquilizers to this ongoing saga. One can only wonder what are the intentions behind the grilling threats specially when questioning new ministers. Is it something about the way they swore into office or is it because they don’t belong to a certain tribe, political bloc or diwaniya? I would like to send my congratulations to Mr Sami Al-Nasef on his appointment as Minister of Communication and Information. Looking at his journalistic background, the media will welcome the appointment of a fellow colleague who will understand the importance of the freedom of press. I hope that he will play a major role in protecting the freedom of Kuwait’s media from the proposed amendments to the press law. Perhaps he can also advise the government on the importance of marketing their agenda by defending their projects publicly by releasing statements to the press or holding weekly briefings for the media. After all, this is a major part of the political game and so far only the MPs are good at it. The job that lies ahead is not an easy one and I hope that this Cabinet can finally get the wheel of development rolling again for the sake of our beloved country that has fallen behind its neighbours.

Laden warns US from the dead DUBAI: Osama bin Laden warned in the final audiotape he recorded before being killed by American commandos there will be no US security without Palestine security, an Islamist website reported yesterday. Addressing US President Barack Obama, he said: “America will not be able to dream of security until we live in security in Palestine. It is unfair that you live in peace while our brothers in Gaza live in insecurity.” “Accordingly, and with the will of God, our attacks will continue against you as long as your support for Israel continues,” he warned in a message posted on Shamikh1.net, a conduit for Al-Qaeda communications. The founder of Al-Qaeda said he had tried to send a “message” to the United States through Nigerian

Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, who tried to explode a bomb on a Detroit-bound US airliner in Dec 2009. “If it were possible to send you messages by way of words, we would not have had to use planes to send them to you,” he said. “So the message we wanted to convey through the plane of our hero, the fighter Umar Farouk, may God be with him, confirms a previous message which had been sent to you by our heroes of September 11,” he said in a clear reference to the September 11, 2001 attacks against the United States. The audio recording lasted just over a minute. The Internet outlet for official messages from Al-Qaeda on Friday confirmed the death of bin Laden, but warned that those rejoicing his killing would have their “blood mixed with tears.” — AFP

KUWAIT: HH the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad AlSabah yesterday swore in the new 16-member Cabinet presented by the Prime Minister HH Sheikh Nasser Mohammad Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, who overcame lastminute obstacles to successfully form his seventh government in five years. “There are goals and ambitious developmental expectations in front of you, and the citizens are looking forward to that becoming a reality,” Sheikh Sabah told the ministers yesterday, KUNA said. KUNA said Sheikh Sabah stressed the importance of cooperation between the country’s legislative and executive authorities. But minutes after its formation, the government came under fire from MPs who said the Cabinet is far below expectations and three grillings were announced, two of them against the prime minister, with more expected to come. Member of the opposition Popular Action Bloc MP Khaled Al-Tahous said he will file a request to grill the prime minister today, just after the new Cabinet ministers take the oath to become members of parliament. Pro-government MP Saadoun Hammad said he will meet later this week with other MPs to prepare a grilling against Health Minister Helal Al-Sayer who was retained in the Cabinet. Islamist MP Waleed Al-Tabtabaei said his Reform and Development Bloc will file to grill the prime minister but after the first grilling is over. Liberal MPs have already vowed to file to grill deputy premier for economic affairs Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahd Al-Sabah and Shiite MP Saleh Ashour was reported contemplating to file another grilling against Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammad Al-Sabah. The Cabinet lineup and the subsequent reactions made MP Dhaifallah Buramia to predict a quick resignation of the Cabinet or a dissolution of the Assembly, while MP Salem Al-Namlan predicted “major confrontations between the government and MPs”. The announcement of the Cabinet came after the prime minister overcame last-minute problems after the only MP in the Cabinet, state minister for Cabinet affairs Roudhan Al-Roudhan, declined to be included in the new Cabinet over a formality which he considered very Continued on Page 2
