ugust 15 fell earlier this week. Kuwait has a tradition that the 12th, 13, and 14th days of Ramadan are special days for children when we celebrate something called Girgian. There is not an accurate interpretation of the word Girgian, but it is something similar to the way children in the West celebrate Halloween. Kuwait, Iraq hold talks over controversial port KUWAIT: An Iraqi technical delegation has held talks in Kuwait over a seaport Baghdad claims would strangle its narrow shipping lanes in the Gulf, the Kuwaiti foreign ministry said yesterday. The Kuwaiti side presented illustrations and studies on Mubarak Al-Kabeer port and its impact on shipping in Khour Abdullah waterway, said an official quoted by the KUNA news agency. Khour Abdullah is a narrow waterway that separates

Iraqi and Kuwaiti shores off Boubyan Island where the megaport is being built, and leads to Iraq’s Umm Qasr port and other smaller ports. On Monday, the Iraqi delegation visited the site of the port, some 120 km north of Kuwait City and is due to hold more meetings with a regional environment organization and other technical bodies, the ministry said. KUWAIT: MP Shuwaib Al-Muwaizri called yesterday for launching a major campaign against corruption in Kuwait and urged all sides to take part in the campaign which would be launched after the holy month of Ramadan. Titled “Where is our money”, the campaign aims at making Kuwaitis know where and how the country’s wealth has been squandered and to chase public funds thieves and those who assist them, Muwaizri said. He said that “we want the campaign to be the first message to the government and those concerned that the Kuwaiti people are fed up with ongoing financial and administrative corruption” and deals carried out at the expense of the people. Muwaizri called on all MPs, citizens and the media to support the campaign which ultimately aim to hold to account all those who are responsible for squandering public funds. The lawmaker said that those who squandered public funds now want the people to bear the burden of their actions, calling on those who doubt in this fact to review the events in the country during the past 10 years. Muwaizri described the proposed campaign as vital in order to avert the country the results of actions of corrupt elements. In the meantime, MP Faisal Al-Muslim yesterday urged the government and other MPs to attend the emergency parliamentary session tomorrow, but at the same time charged that there are sides trying to foil the session from being held. Assembly speaker Jassem AlKhorafi on Monday sent out invitations for the session Continued on Page 13
