By A Saleh and Agencies DUBAI: Three rockets have hit the border area between Kuwait and Iraq, Al Arabiya TV reported yesterday quoting diplomatic sources. The pro-Gaddafi TV channel Al Orouba reported the rockets had targeted Kuwait’s Mubarak port, which is under construction and has been the subject of arguments between oil-producing Iraq and Kuwait, which share a small border. Meanwhile, Iraq yesterday officially denied reports suggesting that three missiles had been fired from southern Iraq with the intention of targeting Kuwait’s Mubarak Al-Kabeer Port, currently being built on the east coast of Boubyan Island. The denial came in the form of an official statement released by the office of the Iraqi Chief-of-Staff. A Kuwaiti military insider confirmed the reports, however, telling Kuwait’s Al-Aan news agency that three missiles were fired at Kuwaiti targets from Iraq on Thursday night, with the principal target being the mega port on Boubyan Island, a few kilometers away from Iraq’s outlet to the Arabian Gulf. ere are some recommendations on how to make the most out of your search for Laylatul-Qadr.
Itikaaf This was a practice of Rasullulah (sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam). Abdullah bin Umar narrated that Rasullulah (sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam) used to practice Itikaaf in the last ten days of the month of Ramadan. Dedicate the last ten days and nights of Ramadan to the worship of your Creator, Al-Khalaq. Spend the time performing dhikr, reading Quran, praying supererogatory prayers, tahajjud, etc. If you can’t devote the full 10 days and nights, it’s encouraged that you do what you can, even if it’s a night or two. Make a master du’a list Take some time and brainstorm all the things you would like to ask from Allah in your du’a. Include anything and everything, whether it be things in this dunya or Continued on Page 2

UN HQ in Nigeria bombed; 18 dead ABUJA: A car bomb ripped through the United Nations’ headquarters in the Nigerian capital of Abuja yesterday, killing at least 18 people, in an attack reminiscent of a June blast claimed by a local radical Islamist group. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said the final casualty toll was likely to be considerable, and Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan ordered tighter security around the capital after what he called a “most despica-
in the
ble assault”. Meanwhile, a spokesman for a radical Muslim sect in Nigeria known locally as Boko Haram has claimed responsibility for the car bombing at the United Nations’ office. The spokesman yesterday talked with the BBC’s Hausa language service, which is widely trusted and listened to throughout Nigeria’s Muslim north. They often make claims via that BBC service.
Security sources and witnesses said the car rammed into the building and blew up, badly damaging parts of an office complex where close to 400 people normally work for UN agencies. “We do not yet have precise casualty figures but they are likely to be considerable,” Ban said, adding that the building housed 26 UN humanitarian and development agencies. ‘Reform or risk ouster’
MEXICO CITY: An arson attack on a casino in the northern Mexican industrial city of Monterrey sparked a massive fire and killed at least 53 people, the governor of the state of Nuevo Leon said Thursday. Governor Rodrigo Medina announced the grim toll in an interview with the Televisa network, adding that the vast establishment, the Casino Royale, had been set ablaze using some kind of flammable liquid “like gasoline.” President Felipe Calderon condemned the attack, calling it an “abhorrent and barbaric act of terror” in a message on Twitter and expressing his solidarity with the people of Nuevo Leon, of which Monterrey is the capital.
MANAMA: Bahrain’s most senior Shiite cleric is warning the Gulf kingdom’s rulers to either ease their grip on power or risk joining Libya’s Muammar Gaddafi and other Arab leaders swept aside by uprisings. The defiant Friday sermon by Sheikh Isa Qassim was attended by thousands of worshippers after Bahrain’s justice minister accused the cleric of promoting unrest. Qassim vowed he would not be silenced, saying it’s his religious duty to support demands by Bahrain’s majority Shiites for greater rights. He says that Bahrain’s ruling Sunni dynasty can either enact sweeping reforms or risk the same fate as Gaddafi and the ousted presidents of Egypt and Tunisia.
