Syrian soldiers storm northern village, kill six BEIRUT: Syrian security forces pursuing anti-government protesters stormed several towns and villages yesterday, killing at least six people - including a child and wounding many others during raids and house-to-house searches, activists said. The largest operation appeared to be in Sarameen in the northern Idlib province, where the London-based Observatory for Human Rights said five people were killed and more than 60 wounded. One person also died during raids in Qara, a suburb of the capital, Damascus. Similar raids were reported in the village of Heet near the border with Lebanon, along with a military buildup just outside the central town of Rastan, which has become a hotbed of dissent against President Bashar Assad’s regime during the 5-month-old uprising. The prime minister of Turkey, a former Continued on Page 13

Muslims celebrate Eid RIYADH: Saudi Arabia announced yesterday that the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, characterized by dawn-to-dusk fasting and heightened piety, has ended. The decision was made after sunset yesterday when the new moon was spotted. Muslims follow a lunar calendar. Saudi Arabia said the three-day Eid Al-Fitr holiday that marks the end of Ramadan will begin today. Saudi

Arabia is home to the main Muslim holy sites. Egypt and several other Arab countries said they, too, will observe Eid Al-Fitr starting today. The month of fasting and extended prayer began August 1. For many Muslims, Ramadan is a spiritual exercise, a lesson in self-restraint and a time for empathy and charity. It is observed by millions of believers around the world. — AP

MP demands details on cash withdrawals Interior denies MPs intervention for drug dealers By B Izzak KUWAIT: Leading opposition MP Mussallam Al-Barrak yesterday demanded in a question to the prime minister, complete details on the cash withdrawals from the Central Bank of Kuwait during the past five years. In his question to Sheikh Nasser Mohammad AlAhmad Al-Sabah, Barrak demanded a list of all cash withdrawals from the central bank to all government bodies and agencies from April 1, 2006, just two months after the prime minister was appointed, until now. He also demanded the value and date of each withdrawal, the employees who made the withdrawal for each government agency and the names of beneficiaries, MPs included, whom the money was paid to and for what reason, demanding supporting evidence for each transaction. The question comes amid a major controversy over the reported illegal deposits of around KD25 million into the accounts of two MPs which were

linked to political motives, specifically grillings in the National Assembly. The deposits were reportedly made in cash and through transfers within a short period of time which aroused suspicions by local bank officials. The report prompted MPs to call for a swift investigation as they prepare to call for an emergency parliamentary session to debate the issue. The government has made a small reference to the issue by saying that the central bank has not received any notification from the public prosecution or local banks about any illegal deposits. Barrak yesterday accused the government of being involved in the issue, adding that the silence of the governor of the central bank raises many question marks. Bloggers and Twitter users have even mentioned the names of the two MPs who received the funds. Islamist MP Jamaan Al-Harbash said the Reform and Development Bloc will prepare a request to call for an emergency parliamentary session to debate the issue and called on

MPs to sign the request. At least 33 MPs are required to sign for the session to be held. Harbash warned that if the government foils the session or does not attend, the grilling of the prime minister will be inevitable. Assembly speaker Jassem AlKhorafi meanwhile said on Sunday that the assembly cannot do anything because it does not have any document or evidence regarding the case. But several opposition MPs strongly criticized Khorafi for issuing such a statement, saying that the assembly must act quickly to clear the reputation of its members. In another development, the interior ministry yesterday denied a report in Al-Qabas newspaper that unnamed MPs have mediated to secure the release of a number of people arrested on charges of drugs trafficking. A statement by the ministry insisted that no MPs have intervened in such cases and such mediations cannot take place in the interior ministry especially in cases related to drugs trafficking.

KUWAIT: The Iraqi National Coalition has accused the United States and Saudi Arabia of persuading Kuwait to carry on with building the Mubarak Al-Kabeer port. It called on the Arab League to intervene to resolve the issue. Coalition member MP Qassem Al-Araji made the comment recently, adding that Kuwait’s insistence on completing the project in four phases will not bode well for the relationship shared between the two neighboring countries. The Iraqi lawmaker underscored that Saudi Arabia has been backing Kuwait with the aim of weakening the Iraqi political regime. He accused the country of dealing with the subject from a biased point of view, driving a wedge between religious sects that populate Iraq. Al-Araji pointed out that the United States wishes to remain in Iraq for the longest possible period, thereby egging Kuwait on to construct the port, and that only the Arab League can intervene to resolve the problem between Kuwait and Iraq to improve relations. He pointed out that Kuwaiti officials’ stance is contradictory, explaining that the country believes in hurting the Iraqi people and punishing Iraq for the atrocities committed by Saddam Hussein’s regime. Officials in Kuwait have said no undertaking has been signed pledging that it will not build the port. Reliable sources explained that when the Iraqi delegation visited the country to familiarize themselves with the project, Kuwait assured them that the project will help serve the two countries without affecting navigation in the area. How far will phase four be affected? Does it mean that the undertaking should be canceled? Phase four concerns increasing the number of berths, depending on the requirement. The blue-print of the fourth phase indicates that it does not extend beyond the Kuwaiti border and will not affect Al-Fao Port which Iraq intends to construct in the future.

Scandal rocks KAC Resign or be fired, Al-Falah told KUWAIT: Kuwait Airways chief Hamad Al-Falah has been reportedly given an open leave over a scandal in which he was accused of making derogatory remarks against Shiite faithful. Al-Falah admitted lobbying to sack Shiite staff members in Kuwait Airways. According to the sources, Minister of Electricity and Water, Minister of Communication and acting Minister of Information Salem Al-Othaina summoned KAC President Hamad Al-Falah yesterday and confronted him after listening to a voice recording in which AlFalah made controversial remarks during a meeting with an unidentified person. Al-Othaina gave Al-Falah two options to resign or be fired. However, HH the Prime Minister Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammad Al-Sabah has decided to place Al-Falah on an ‘open leave’ until his term expires on September 26, 2011, after which his contract will not be renewed. Gaddafi’s daughter Aisha

Gaddafi family flees to Algeria ALGIERS: Libyan strongman Muammar Gaddafi’s wife, two sons and a daughter entered Algeria yesterday, the foreign ministry in Algiers announced. “The wife of Gaddafi, Safiya, his daughter Aisha, and sons Hannibal and Mohammed, accompanied by their children, entered Algeria at 08:45 am (0745 GMT) through the Algeria-Libyan border,” the ministry said in a statement published by APS news agency, giving no information on the whereabouts of Gaddafi himself. “This information has been brought to the attention of the United Nations Secretary General, the security council president and Mahmud Jibril, president of the executive council of the National Transitional Council (NTC),” the interim administrative body set up by the rebels fighting Gaddafi for power in Libya, the ministry statement said. There was no word on the whereabouts of his other children, including Seif al-Islam, his most prominent son, whom the rebels claimed to have captured, together with Mohammed, earlier this month. Seif alIslam mysteriously resurfaced, free, days later. But Italian news agency ANSA said Gaddafi’s youngest son, Khamis, had “almost certainly” been killed on the way from Tripoli southwards to Bani Walid. The same source said Gaddafi himself and two of his other sons-Seif al-Islam and former footballer Saadi-were hiding south of Tripoli in the town of Bani Continued on Page 13
