A compilation of the projects developed during the first year. Called “basic level let us explore the principal architectural concepts through the use of different materials and conceptual projects.

The largest process. A compilation of the projects developed from the second year until the forth. This intermediate level follows the same theoretical structure but increases its difficulty through the years when more concepts are added to the project design.

The end of career project is a one semester level developed during the last year. The professors turn in our advisors to our original projects and it can be continued to be a thesis project.

FIRST YEAR PROJECTS

WORKS DONE DURING THE SEMESTER

WORKS DONE DURING THE SEMESTER

During the last basic level we continued with the spatial exploration but with more personality in our designs. No specific measurements were requiere, or even the material. The project called “The fort” was the last exercise we made during the last half of the semester. It needed to have a principal space (center one) and more spaces trying to each one reflected a different intention of design. MOBILE Exercise about balance with the balloons Introduction to first architectural concepts. Spatial relations, light entries, form, volume and first design intentions. The final project called “Momo’s house” is the last exercise we made during the last half of the semester. The project is composed of a principal space (wood material) and 3 secondary ones. The challenge was to create relationships between them, and to be a whole composition. TREE HOUSE Half of the semester project. Strategies developed: spatial relations, light, volume and shape.

SHELTER Exercise about scales, proportions, and balance using weight

FUTURISTIC HOUSE Half of the semester project. Strategies developed: scales, proportions, spatial relations, light, volume and shape. 9

BEACH HOUSE

FIRST MEASUREMENT CONCEPTS

ACTIVITIES gather rest clean eat

The design process started with some conceptual ideas, that makes us use our imagination to the fullest. We had to separate the different activities of the house (colored beans) with some design characteristics.

After that, in the next graphic, we had to put it in the way we wanted our house to look like, to finally start with the architectural planes, furniture design and position.

2

During this semester we worked the first measurement concepts. The project called “Beach house was the first architectural plan design. We learned how to organize the principal spaces of a house using the concepts learned in the first year, and the measurement of the furniture. The furniture was the protagonist in this project, we had to design some of this multi-use furniture in every space.

OLD VS NEW The main idea of the building was to show this contrast between the old and the new, but also to create a building that doesn’t compete with the principal one. So the design was mostly undergrounded.

COMPOSITION The first and second floor only shows the public space, with a huge patio with a delicate wood bridge across it. Under this patio is when the program starts, putting the artistic rooms in the new building and the residency in the old one.

7

2

During this semester we worked an intervention in a patrimonial building. The project called “Cultural centre at Hatuchay Mansion” was an intervention in an old peruvian traditional house from the 20th’s century. The exercise was to design a contemporary building that could complete the fallen part of the mansion, it has to be a cultural and investigation centre, plus it needed to have a temporary residency.

STRUCTURAL CONCEPT

1. DEFINE The design process started defining the entrances.

6

2. PLACE The principal and secondary patios, dividing the public and private sector

3. COMPOSITION The building was designed to concentrate the more visited spaces on the lower level.

4. COMMON AREA The last floor was composed in two big terraces: exhibitions and a rest zone.

This was the first time where we made a previous investigation of the site before making the project design and concept. This project was a technical school, located in the history centre of Rimac, located in Lima. The exercise was to define a characteristic subject of this building, related to the historic heritage and its preservation. I chose ceramic arts to be exported and also a way to earn money for the people of the district and its touristic attraction. 14

During this semester we worked on public space design. The project was a community center builded in a park that was designed in the first part of the semester, the challenge here was to define the volume we wanted to create: a building that merged into the landscape. We had to pass our conceptual ideas to design strategies that justified the volume and shape of our building.

1 During this semester we worked a collective housing project. To get into it, we first needed to do the site analysis and stick to the construction reglament. There were many challenges here, the first one was that we had to use the most of the area available we could, but the building was between two big constructions so we had to find a way to ventilate our departments. The project needed to be efficient and functional. 18

During this semester we worked on urban equipment. The project was a shelter for the visitors of the children’s hospital located in Lima, the main idea was to provide a place to stay for the families of these kids while they’re being attended, because most of them come from other departments. The challenge here was to add another activity to the program and also to create an architecture for the kids, for them to feel comfortable and to this place be like a second home for them.

MODERN ART MUSEUM

BASIC | INTERMEDIATE | FINAL

CULTURAL EQUIPMENT

THE STAIRS AS A CONCEPT The strategy of this project was to use the stairs as the protagonist of the whole design, being a way to bring natural light to all the floors and also being used as a rest zone and a way to appreciate the exhibition areas while they get into the building.

5 4 2

1 3

This project was the last one of the intermediate level, we finished it with the design of a modern art museum. To develop this project we used all the tools from the previous levels, putting aside the conceptual and abstract elements. The purpose in this exercise was to create a cultural road, being the museum de connection between all the cultural equipment. In this case the design was under some structural and volumetric constraints.

The “end of career project” is the one where we have to apply all of our previous knowledge. We have to choose the subject, the place and theories that can sustain our ideas. The process is divided in two parts, the first one is a complete analysis, that includes the theoretical and historical framework and site analysis. After that, we started with the design process, where we had to apply all of the research previously done. It evolved until we had our final result: our interpretation center in Saqsaywaman national park located in Cusco, Perú. 24
