Editor’s Desk

Safety campaigns were increased in the final quarter of the year by sections throughout the mine, which is essential in communicating the need for everyone to be vigilant in this season of exceptional care. Our business commitment remains unchanged, and we are proud to share the exciting news that Palabora Copper won two awards at the recent SAIMM - Mine Safe awards. These awards are not to be taken lightly, especially in an industry which is prone to risk and lives are lost. Read more about this on page 9.

2024 was big on physical activity with the last quarter being momentous - highlights included the Regional Tripartite Limpopo Forum wellness day organised by PMC which took place in November at the Lulekani township, and the #WalkwithDrMgiba yearend walk in December at the Impala Park Stadium in Phalaborwa town. Both events involved physical activity, promoting healthy living and a work-life balance which is vital in the workplace.

WHILE THE END OF A CHAPTER CAN BE SAD, THERE IS ANOTHER JUST OVER THE HORIZON!

A huge thank you to all PMC sporting and departmental teams who contributed to the success of these events. I was personally honoured to form part of the team who put them together. After taking part in the activities this year, I can already feel the benefits in my mental and physical health. If you have not joined a PMC club yet, I urge you to do it in the new year.

s 2024 comes to a close, we find ourselves reflecting on the defining moments of this year. And what an exceptional year it has been for the mining sector in our country and globally! With major political and economic shifts globally, alongside remarkable progress in technology, 2024 is certainly a year to be remembered.

After an exciting and eventful 2024, I would like to thank all our readers, contributors, and contractor partners for their continued support this year. I wish everyone well over the holiday period, and hope that you all have a joyful New Year!

In this final edition of our newsletter, we share uplifting stories that have inspired us during the final quarter of the year. Our leadership feature highlights Tshepo Malatji, another PMC leader with an impressive background at PMC. He lets us in on the project that he is currently playing a leadership role in and the impact they play within the business. We also celebrate the pioneers of Palabora Copper who have dedicated decades of hard work and loyalty to the company. This year’s recipients certainly deserved the leading story as we watched the various divisions had their sectional events to honour their colleagues who have dedicated one to four decades of service to Palabora Copper.

4 | Quarter 4 | www.palabora.com |

Beautiful stories of humble beginnings for some of our legends were shared during their events - a true testament of the positive impact that the company had on their lives. I am grateful to have witnessed the emotional speeches that some of the recipients made. Their contributions will leave an enduring legacy as they prepare to hang up their boots. Most anticipated in this edition is the Employee Excellence Awards for 2024!!! The news is out, the winners have been announced! We reveal the quarterly nominated employees, and the final winners are announced on Page 13. Congratulations to all the winners, including VIP Q5 and Q6!!! May this recognition inspire you to excel in the next year.

Who has been involved in this project?

LEADERSHIP CORNER Tshepo Malatji

Manager: Magnetite Ball Mill Projects - VIP Surface

WE GET TO LEARN MORE ABOUT TSHEPO MALATJI AND THE PROJECTS THAT HE IS BUSY WITH...

B

orn and raised in Ga-Selwana, Phalaborwa, Tshepo Malatji is a Process Engineer with a passion for problem-solving. Though often found on the golf course, this loving husband and father of three spends more time searching for golf balls in the woods than on the fairway. After completing his schooling in Ga-Selwana, he pursued Chemical Engineering at both the Mangosuthu and Tshwane University of Technology. Since joining PMC, Malatji climbed a few ranks from Metallurgist to Process Engineer, Superintendent, and now serves as the Project Manager at Value Improving

Practices (VIP), managing Magnetite Projects. With almost 20 years of experience in the industry and his passion for delivering projects that positively impact business, Malatji shared his journey with us and gave an operational update of the five (5) projects he is currently managing. “I am privileged to lead a highly skilled, multidisciplinary team tasked with the safe delivery of Magnetite VIP projects, which are aligned with our strategic objective of becoming a 7.5Mtpa 65% Fe Iron Ore exporter. My role is to bridge the gap between strategy and execution by breaking down complex goals into actionable, manageable packages

This project is a collaborative effort involving numerous stakeholders. Internally, the magnetite division, under the leadership of the Executive Manager, John Makgatho, serves as our primary client. The project is sponsored by the Assistant Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Zhengqin Zou, with overall accountability held by Aidan Schoonbee as the VIP Executive Manager. We also depend heavily on the support of Finance, Procurement, Asset Management, Human Resources (HR), and Training to ensure seamless operations. Externally, we have established partnerships with renowned international heavy machinery manufacturers, including Sinosteel, Landsky, and CITIC Heavy Industries, alongside nearly 20 local service providers who play a vital role in delivering the project’s objectives.

What lessons did you learn from these projects?

One invaluable lesson was the significance of detailed planning. While no plan unfolds perfectly, tasks that are thoroughly planned provide a degree of predictability and structure. This preparation allows us to address challenges proactively and effectively, reinforcing the importance of robust front-end loading in projects of this magnitude.

What are the names of the projects? Please give us a brief description of all the projects.

We are managing a program consisting of five interconnected projects, each critical to enhancing our production capabilities and aligning with our strategic goals: 1.

Reclaim Conveyor (RC 2): This project focuses on the design, construction, and commissioning of a new conveyor system to facilitate the efficient remining of historical stockpiles.

2.

Magnetic Separation Plant 3 (MSP 3): A facility designed to recover magnetite from current arisings, particularly from the Tankcell Flotation Plant. This plant introduces enhanced process control techniques to improve integration between Magnetite and Copper

Pala Connector | LEADERSHIP

streams, laying the groundwork for the removal of current arisings from MSP 1 necessary to produce 65% Fe grade. 3.

Disc Filter Plant (DFP): This project involves the construction of a filtration plant equipped with disc filters. The plant will deliver a final product with a moisture content of 7.5%, eliminating reliance on traditional drying ponds and streamlining the filtration process.

4.

Magnetic Ball Mill (MBM): This project aims to reduce the particle size of reclaimed material from 300 microns to 106 microns. This step is essential for downstream magnetic separation and for achieving the 65% Fe Iron Ore quality.

5.

Conventional Mills Conversion (CMC): The refurbishment and modernization of 18 conventional mills, integrating current technologies to support particle size reduction. This initiative ensures optimal utilization of existing assets.

These projects are tightly integrated to improve overall efficiency, enhance product quality, and assist in meeting the business’s long-term objectives.

When did it start? What was the expected duration of these projects?

The first project, MBM, began in Q4 of 2023 with the ball mill order. The other projects followed in Q1 of 2024. Each project has its timeline, but collectively, we are targeting completion of all projects in 2025.

What challenges did you experience throughout the project’s tenure, and how did you handle them?

One of the key challenges has been balancing the need for speed with thorough preparation. Ideally, one would complete feasibility studies and detailed designs before initiating procurement and construction. However, market dynamics and time pressures necessitated overlapping some project phases. To address this, we prioritized the procurement of long-lead items while concurrently finalizing designs, ensuring steady progress without compromising overall quality. Additionally, converting international

design standards to align with South African regulatory requirements introduced some delays, but we have taken a structured approach to mitigate their impact on the project timeline.

How did the project come about? Please share the story behind the projects.

As you are aware, we are exporting two grades of magnetite at present, 58% (IOX) and 62% Fe (High grade), and our strategy is to tap into the premium grade of 65% Fe. The project stems from our commitmentto diversify and enhance our product offerings by tapping into the premium grade 65% Fe market. This shift not only aligns with global demand but also enables us to remain profitable during market downturns.

How is the project aiming to benefit or elevate the business?

Achieving 65% Fe will unlock approximately $15/ton additional revenue compared to 62% Fe, translating to over R1 billion in annual revenue. This transformation solidifies our competitive edge while delivering exceptional value to stakeholders.

Did the project promote skills transfer for the employees at the mine?

The project has generated numerous development and learning opportunities for employees. The project owner’s team was primarily composed of internal resources and graduates. Many of us were promoted internally, while others were reassigned from different projects. For instance, the CMC project has led to the creation of new positions and the recruitment of individuals from learnership pipelines and the surrounding communities.

How did you plan, monitor, and manage project risks?

We actively maintain a risk register through our Project Controls team. This document helps us anticipate potential issues and take preventive steps, which has been crucial in keeping the projects on track. Additionally, regular risk workshops are conducted with key stakeholders to validate identified risks, uncover new ones, and update mitigation measures. This proactive approach allows us to anticipate potential issues early, implement preventive measures, and minimize disruptions. The risk

register also supports informed decision-making by providing a clear overview of the project's risk landscape.

How did you make sure that your project stayed on track?

We utilise a hybrid project management model that combines traditional waterfall methodologies with agile practices. This approach provides the structure necessary for large-scale projects while maintaining flexibility to address emerging issues effectively. Daily stand-up meetings are an integral part of our process, where the team reviews progress and discusses key project sprints for the week. These sessions, supported by a Kanban chart, allow us to track tasks against the project schedule in real-time, identify potential bottlenecks, and address any red flags promptly.

‘‘

It is important for any leader to be inclusive and transparent. If collaboration is incouraged, teams can be empowered and take ownership in their roles.

’’

Do you mind sharing the recipe for how you managed to close off this project successfully?

While we are still working towards completion, one of the key factors that has worked well so far is addressing small issues early before they have a chance to escalate into larger problems. A proactive approach, combined with thorough planning, has been essential in anticipating challenges and creating actionable solutions. Fostering teamwork has also been critical; the progress made was a direct result of the collaborative efforts of everyone involved. For example, during the conversion of CMC section 5 & 6, we had not yet recruited any maintenance personnel and had to rely on concentrator and magnetite teams for equipment installation. Recognizing the importance of every contribution and staying open to input from all team members has helped us stay aligned and adaptable. Above all, maintaining focus on the bigger picture while acknowledging that no plan is perfect has been a humbling yet valuable lesson. Each setback has reinforced the importance of flexibility and continuous learning, keeping us grounded as we work toward the project’s successful completion. | www.palabora.com | Quarter 4 |

tends to skyrocket due to a number of reasons. Employees were reminded about the safety precautions that they need to adhere to while at work and in their personal space in order to keep safe. Khumbul’ekhaya was the topic of the day focusing on the main key points of the initiative (substance abuse, visible felt leadership (VFL), supervision, mental wellness and fatigue) with its slogan of See Something, Say Something and Save Someone.

‘‘I would like everyone to

commit to the following 3 steps to a safe Festive season: See something, Say something and Save someone. Sarie Van Wyk, Manager for Safety

’’

The Khumbul’ekhaya campaign was launched way back in 2020 with its main mandate to sustain and ensure that there is “Zero Harm” in all operations on-site. The campaign is turning five (5) years this year with its objectives still standing strong and serving its purpose of appealing to employees and contractors at

Palabora Mining Company (PMC) and the broader mining industry in general to work safely in reducing mine related fatalities, injuries and illnesses. Sarie Van Wyk, Manager Safety, had these few words for the team. “The ultimate gift we can give our families and loved ones this festive season, is to return home safely after every shift. I want everyone to commit to the following 3 steps to a safe Festive season: See something, Say something and Save someone. It is as easy as 1 - 2 - 3. If you see someone doing an unsafe task, or a condition that is unsafe, please have the courage to say something. Interact with the person who is working unsafely, and/or report the unsafe condition so it can be fixed before someone is injured.” Let us remain focused on doing our work safely, being our brother’s/sister’s keeper, and remembering those at home who are eagerly waiting for us to come home. Zero Harm is possible. “Thank you for your efforts and commitment to focus on doing thorough safe declarations, detailed HIRAs and Xiya-Xiyas to help us achieve it,” said Sarie.

COMMUNITY HERO… Masilo values being a result of modest origins journey has been ‘‘Myshaped by the love

and teachings of my childhood, inspiring me to create a legacy of contribution to the BaPhalaborwa community through running and giving back.

‘‘

We had the pleasure of having a one-on-one conversation with Masilo Moremi over a cup of coffee in his office as he unpacked why he believes that he was raised by the community for the community.

The kindness and humility I received from my family and people around my village when growing up still leaves me in awe even today. Being raised by a single mother with a supportive structure from my uncles and aunts allowed me the leverage to hop in and out from their homesteads which had a positive impact on how I turned out based on the love, teachings and grooming I received throughout childhood life,” said Moremi with deep emotion. Being born and raised in a village called Boqa, Bolobedu just outside Tzaneen in Limpopo afforded Moremi the opportunity to experience being loved and raised by his close relatives. He is from a family of two (2) boys, him being the last born and was raised by a single mother. Moremi began his school journey at

20 | Quarter 4 | www.palabora.com |

Lerale Primary School then proceeded to Mokoto High School to finish his high school studies. He went on to further his studies at Tzaneen College where he did his National Diploma (N1 to N3) in Electrical Engineering before moving to Polokwane College to complete his studies, where he did N4 to N6. The association between Moremi and Palabora Mining Company (PMC) originated during his five-year apprenticeship. Following a brief period at home after the conclusion of his apprenticeship contract, Moremi reentered PMC in December 2001 as a Drill Rig Operator in the Underground Lift I SBU section, where he served for five years. Subsequently, he was transferred to the Maintenance Electrical section of Lift I, working as an Underground

Electrician from 2005 until 2016/17, and later as a Winder Electrician until 2019. He was subsequently appointed to his current role as a Construction Specialist for Value Improving Practices (VIP) surface projects. In this capacity, his daily responsibilities encompass ensuring compliance with all construction companies on-site, providing assistance as needed, and participating in their planning efforts. Moremi’s dedication has not gone unnoticed. He has been awarded the title of Employee of the Month twice - first in 2003 for exemplary practices and most recently in 2023 during the Crusher Five (5) project for outstanding innovation. When asked about his longevity with the company, which spans over two decades, he cited these achievements and the honour of being entrusted with the responsibility of representing the company in Finland for the testing of drill machines. He mentioned that employee recognition plays a significant role in retaining employees. People’s person, easygoing and runner are the three words that you will get from people in Moremi’s life when asked about the kind of person he is. As the Chairperson of the PMC Athletics Club Moremi has extended the humility and lessons he learned in childhood to the residents of Ba-Phalaborwa by spearheading initiatives such as donating running shoes and organising family runs to promote community well-being He derives his inspiration from the wise counsel of his mother and the invaluable life lessons she shared with him. "My ultimate goal is to create a lasting legacy that reflects my positive influence on numerous lives and my contribution to the Ba-Phalaborwa community through running," expressed Moremi as we concluded our enlightening discussion.

CHANGE HOUSE RENOVATION: Restoring the dignity of PMC women

T

he health and safety of employees is of paramount importance at PMC, just as much as it is important to comply with South African legislation. Encouraging diversity, inclusion and parity in the workplace is not only a social responsibility, but a business imperative. To accommodate the increasing number of women in the section as well as to ensure their comfort, safety and overall well-being at work, the change house facilities at the Smelter Acid Plant and Gas Handling section were refurbished and extended. Leaders and employees gathered to celebrate the successful completion of the ladies’ change house extension project at the plant. The section which comprised of two women in the past, is delighted to share that the number of women in the section has now risen to seven in the past decade, with one woman in the C-grade level. As it currently stands, thirty-three (33) of the total employees at the Acid Plant and Gas Handling section are female employees. While strides have been made, it is also evident that there is still much work to

be done to achieve a more balanced and representative workforce. Coincidentally, the Mine Health and Safety Council (MHSC) issued a code of practice in 2023 which provided a guideline on what is permitted and not permitted concerning the provision of PPE for women in the sector. Change houses and ablutions were included in the COP.

‘‘

The new facility seeks to provide privacy and dignity to our women, ensuring their comfort, safety, and wellbeing at work, - Kabedi Macheru, Superintendent Acid Plant & Gas Handling

’’

“The new facility seeks to provide privacy and dignity to our women. This is a momentous occasion that not only marks a significant upgrade in our workplace facilities, but also represents our steady commitment to gender equity,” said Kabedi Macheru, Superintendent Acid

Plant & Gas Handling. The new facility is now able to cater for all ladies on duty per shift, boosting the number of personal lockers, showers and toilets, which was not the case previously. The ladies in the department had broad smiles on their faces and commented on how excited and happy they are with the new facility that will also have secured access for added privacy and security. The Acid Plant team would like to express their gratitude to all those who were involved in ensuring the successful completion of the project. It was a journey filled with challenges, and it would not have been possible without the hard work, dedication and collaborative effort of management, contractors, and section employees, including safety officers who contributed their time and expertise from early stages to the final execution of the project. This project is only but just one of the ways to acknowledge and appreciate the invaluable contribution that these women have made since joining the team.

GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE Breaking the Silence and Advocating for ZERO Tolerance

A

s the world embarks on the annual 16 Days of Activism for no violence against women and girls, a sobering reality confronts us. Gender-Based Violence (GBV) remains a pervasive wound on our national conscience, a sting we all carry, and lately, men and boys are also affected. A recent Human Sciences Research Council study reveals a harrowing truth: over 7 million South African people have experienced physical violence from their partners, with more than 2 million having survived sexual abuse. These statistics are more than numbers; they represent fathers, mothers, daughters, brothers, and friends. They are a call to action, a plea for collective responsibility. Each year the 16 days of Activism against GBV are observed from 25 November – 10 December 2024, with the theme: Raising awareness and mobilizing action to end all forms of violence against women and girls.

The roadshow involved the team touring various sections of the mine, and employees arrived in large numbers to participate in and attend the discussion on this societal issue. This initiative was significant in that it addressed issues that were directly related to violence and abuse relevant to the experiences of the employees. The EAP team provided employees with strategies for dealing with GBV and informed

‘‘starts Ending Gender-Based Violence with breaking the silence, fostering empathy, and creating safe spaces for healing and support.

’’

In recent years, the conversation around GBV has gained momentum, broke long-held stigmas, and encouraged open dialogue. Yet, with this broader discussion, GBV remains a complex and often an overlooked issue. Despite increasing numbers of awareness, many people continue to suffer in silence. To wrap up November, which is GBV Awareness Month, Employee Relations and Communications in collaboration with Women in Mining took it upon themselves to organize sessions minewide on the 26th and 27th of November 2024, to address this challenge head-on and amplify awareness and take collective action against it.

them of the counselling services that are available to PMC employees. “We cannot, and will not, accept this as our reality. The fight against GBV needs all of us. Let us break the silence, dismantle the culture of fear, and offer unwavering support to survivors. Together, we can create a South Africa where men, women and children feel safe, respected, and valued. Let us choose empathy, action, and rewrite the narrative,” said Nandi Nkosi, Employee Assistance Programme Practitioner. According to Sgt Elvis Mongwe, SAPS Phalaborwa representative, breaking the silence around GBV means recognizing and addressing its profound impact on mental health. By providing trauma-informed care, promoting safe spaces, and advocating for accessible mental health services, we can empower survivors to heal and reclaim their lives. “The term "violence" encompasses a wide range of actions that might have negative effects on a person's mental, emotional, or physical health. Please keep in mind that PMC is always prepared to offer employees coping with GBV concerns any type of support they may need, including health and psychosocial assistance,” said Abby Ledwaba, Manager Employee Relations and Communication. Our gratitude goes to PMC leaders, all the employees who made it to the roadshows, and especially to the GBV survivors who shared their stories and helped lead the sessions.

Christmas

Came Early For Family As Mokhomole Projects Donate New Home

A new home, a new hope -

A

local family at Selwana received an early Christmas gift after they were handed a newly built and furnished house. The Makhubele family was left destitute after a severe thunderstorm, and heavy winds ravaged their one-room house in Selwana Village in October. The unfortunate incident resulted in the hospitalisation of the family of three at the Maphutha Malatji Hospital. The Ba-Phalaborwa Mayor was moved by the family’s plight and requested assistance from local businesses. Local contractor, and one of PMC’s Enterprise Development beneficiaries, Mokhomole Projects, heeded the call and pledged to build the family a new house. The official handover of the new house to the Makhubele family was done by BaPhalaborwa Municipality, in partnership with Mokhomole Projects on the 27th November 2024. The municipality also provided food parcels and other essential items to

support the family during this difficult time. Speaking at the handover ceremony, Ba-Phalaborwa Mayor, Cllr MM Malatji, expressed her gratitude to Mokhomole Projects for their generous contribution. She urged other local businesses to follow suit and support community initiatives. Mr. Usiah Nkwane, Director of Mokhomole Projects, emphasized the importance of giving back to the community. "This is part of our commitment to making a positive impact on the lives of our neighbours," he said.

A visibly overwhelmed Ms. Mikateko Makhubele, a single mother of two, thanked the municipality and Mokhomole Projects for their kindness. "This new home means the world to my children and I. We now have a safe and secure place to call our own," she said. We are proud to be associated with a company that cares about the needs of others.

UMM UNDERGROUND TEAM COMMEMORATES 600 DAYS WITHOUT LTI LTI milestones are celebratory because they exemplify one of PMC’s core values, Teamwork, as employees worked collaboratively to ensure minerals were extracted safely while prioritizing each other’s wellbeing.

UMM contracting services based in Palabora Mining Company (PMC) celebrated an impressive safety achievement when they reached 600 days without documenting a Lost Time Injury (LTI). UMM observed the accomplishment at a special event where they acknowledged their employees for their contributions, commitment and reaching this milestone. The event to mark this significant achievement was held on Friday, the 15th of November 2024, at Seboka Lapa, where it was well attended by Management and staff members. UMM site manager, Xavier Klopper took to the stage to shower his colleagues with encouragement and appreciation to emphasize the positive impact made to UMM and PMC. “There is a lot of work that was put in place for this milestone to be achieved. A lot of dedication and time spent away from family, and a lot of time spent underground, which deserves a special thank you to everyone for working safely. I want to urge everyone to continue following safety principles, and please continue to look after one another and let us take care of each other This commitment will enable us to ensure that we all go home safely and to celebrate even more milestones, like 1,000 days without an LTI,” said Klopper.

24 | Quarter 4 | www.palabora.com |

Victor Manena, Manager Engineering (Surface and UG) and Quality also took to the stage reminding employees who were assembled at Seboka Lapa of the pride they should feel regarding the nature of their work below ground. He referenced how the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) emphasised the importance of this accomplishment for the business and that it should be recognized to the full extent, as it represents a significant milestone. “We have more than 900 employees that goes underground every single day

and get to operate 180 different machineries. PMC value system says the end justifies the meaning, we are the means for PMC to achieve its objectives, and we are the end. Lastly, allow me to congratulate you all for adding value into reaching this milestone and may we keep up the spirit of working safely going forward,” Manena mentioned. Manena also highlighted the recognition from PMC’s Chief Executive Officer, who underscored the importance of this milestone for the company’s success and reputation. The 600-day LTI-free milestone represents more than just a number – it stands as a testament to UMM’s culture of safety, the resilience of its employees, and their shared commitment to ensuring a secure and productive work environment.

An LTI signifies a non-fatal injury that leads to a disability or an employee's absence from work caused by an injury. An LTI metric serves as a foundational depiction of a company's safety performance and the impact of those injuries on employee productivity.

O

n a sweltering day filled with engaging sporting events, PMC welcomed nine mine houses from the region, along with delegates from the DMRE and the Mine Health and Safety Council, on Saturday, November 16, 2024, at Lulekani Stadium. This event aimed to foster a sustainable transition towards wellness practices in the workplace, enhancing both the physical and mental health of employees. The tripartite wellness initiative had been suspended due to the Covid-19 pandemic but was reinstated in 2022. This year's annual wellness day saw a remarkable turnout compared to the previous year, with hundreds gathering in the local township, representing most of the mines in the area. The participating mines included Exxaro (Grootgeluk mine), Foskor, Modikwa Platinum, Dwaars River, Marula Platinum, Two Rivers, Sefateng, and Ivanplats mine. The day commenced with a fun walk/ run, followed by cultural and sporting activities. Our soccer and netball teams demonstrated commendable performance on the field, and we take great pride in their efforts. Modikwa emerged as the overall winner in soccer, while the Dwaars River ladies claimed victory in netball.

The Mine Health and Safety Council (MHSC) and representatives from the Department of Minerals and Energy were also in attendance, reinforcing their dedication to the event's objectives. We extend our gratitude to all stakeholders and employees who played a role in the event's success. A special acknowledgement goes to the PMC teams: Security, Vermiculite Business, EMS, and Utilities, for their relentless efforts in ensuring the event's

triumph. We also appreciate the support from companies such as PGN Civils, Khongo Investments, Foskor, and Vexovax, as we take pride in collaborating with organizations that recognize the significance of making a positive impact in society. This event served as an excellent conclusion to the year for the Limpopo region’s UG/Open Cast Tripartite Forum. Looking forward to next year!

TRANSFORMING SAFETY TRAINING:

Paving the way to achieve Zero Harm – PMC’s new Hazard Park

T

hrough visionary planning, innovative engineering, and meticulous construction, PMC’s Training Department has successfully reimagined safety training with the launch of the newly revamped Hazard Park. This cutting-edge facility sets a new benchmark in equipping employees with the practical knowledge and skills needed to operate safely in high-risk environments. By merging advanced engineering design with a focus on interactive learning, the park embodies PMC’s unwavering commitment to achieving Zero Harm. The transformation involved extensive research, benchmarking against global best practices, and a complete overhaul of the park’s infrastructure. From conceptual design to final construction, the collaboration between PMC’s Training department, StS3D and KBC Engineering brought the vision to life. The result is a purpose-built training hub featuring 17 fully interactive stations that replicate real-world safety challenges. Each station integrates engineering controls and practical tools,

allowing employees to engage directly with potential hazards in a controlled environment. This hands-on approach bridges the gap between theory and practice, enabling employees to touch, feel, and interact with simulated risks. Beyond imparting technical knowledge, the park provides a safe platform for employees to ask questions, clarify safety procedures, and gain confidence in managing real-life hazards. Mabore Macheru, Training Development and Contractor Onboarding Manager, remarked, "Despite implementing numerous safety campaigns, we realized the need for a more innovative and immersive approach to training. By incorporating advanced engineering solutions and drawing lessons from our safety statics and other leading global mining operations, we’ve created a facility that transforms how we train and empower our workforce." Accommodating up to 20 participants per

session, the park is designed for scalability and impact. Employees who complete the training undergo an assessment using handheld tablets, ensuring they have retained and internalized critical safety concepts. This innovation, combined with the park’s focus on practical engagement, elevates safety training to a new standard. The launch of the Hazard Park was met with widespread acclaim, with Operational Managers Rendani Nemathithi, UG, and Simson Tekane, Vermiculite Business, commending the Training Development and Contractor Onboarding team for their groundbreaking efforts. They highlighted the park as a testament to PMC’s commitment to building a culture of accountability and safety. The revamped Hazard Park is not just a training facility; it is an engineering marvel and a strategic investment in the well-being of employees. By integrating cutting-edge design, innovative construction, and a bold vision for safety, PMC has set the stage for a safer, more empowered workforce, solidifying its place as an industry leader in safety excellence.

WALKING

TOWARDS GREATNESS AND AGAINST GBV WHILE PROMOTING HEALTHY LIVING

I

n a community-building initiative, PMC’s Employee Relations and Communications department coordinated a year-end 9km walk through the streets of Phalaborwa, while honoring the global 16 days of activism against Gender-Based Violence. The walk was open to all and drew PMC leaders, employees, and local community members of all ages who gathered at the Impala Park stadium on Saturday, December 7th, 2024. The #WalkwithDrMgiba team was also celebrating a commitment to healthy living, as the campaign commenced earlier this year, the walk marked the end of a successful year. Some of the frequent walkers noted that a significant transformation in physique was truly deserving of celebration. In contrast to the earlier sweltering days, the weather was refreshing and

suitable for such a significant walk. The walk commenced at Impala Park, where participants were encouraged to carry the GVB placards for demonstrations. An issue that is frequently ignored and burdened by cultural norms and beliefs, GBV continues to be one of the leading causes of death among partners. The walk, along with the campaign, serves as a call to action; GBV impacts not only women but also children and men. The campaign is a pressing reminder that we must advocate against violence, provide resources and empathy to survivors, and raise awareness within our communities. Everyone who participated in the walk and completed it were awarded a medal. Although the path to defeating GBV is extensive, the initiatives taken pave the way for individuals to realize that assistance is available when one experiences domestic violence, and we must ensure that everyone is held accountable to their actions, when you SEE violence taking place, you need to SAY something to SAVE someone. In his speech, PMC’s Health and Occupational Hygiene Manager Dr Ian Mgiba, which the campaign is named after, mentioned the importance of healthy living

and the benefits of physical activity such as walking on a person’s long-term health. He also commended all the employees who have been committed to the campaign since inception.

‘‘Walking together for healthier lives and a GBV-free future - the #WalkwithDrMgiba campaign is a powerful step towards change.

’’

Our sincere appreciation to all the companies that supported this event by sponsoring waterpoint and resources: Josmeck Trading, Payporworks, Marulani Pharmacy, CU Guesthouse and PMC’s Vermiculite Business team. Your contribution is duly appreciated! #WalkwithDrMgiba campaign continues with the weekly walks at Impala Park from 17h00 on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Wednesdays are dedicated to aerobics where all employees and residents are invited to join.
