Co-living Hotel

The journey to the rooftop bar and communal spaces are carved out from the unassuming fire escape route. The insertion of a new staircase balustrade is expressed in folded metal sheets, an expression to symbolise the origami of a journey unfolding. We have chosen to express this vertical circulation with orange colour, in line with the client’s corporate identity and to inject vibrancy and excitement as users climb up in mystery and anticipation to arrive at the party and cosy entertainment area.

Digital Building Innovation Centre

The Architecture Design Resource Centre (ADRC) in Singapore Polytechnic was originally a space for hosting events, critiques and seminar workshops. As part of an expansion programme, the school of Architecture and The Built Environment rolled out plans for transformation of the existing ADRC into a learning space, in particular into a digital hub where the architectural technology lessons are taught. We proposed a monochrome palette for the digital hub right from the inception of our concept, to strengthen the look of crisp and clean spaces, a strong image of efficiency and minimalism for a space where cutting edge technology are of a main emphasis, aspiring to be laboratories of the future. In terms of functionality, we envision that the digital hub be a versatile and well-used space. Thus, we have incorporated movable acoustic curtains for privacy and segregation when smaller groups come together to share the digital hub.

Pitching Competition (Winner)

NUS Sports Centre was part of pitching process through architectural competition. The team has incorporated a Connective Masterplan as the main strategy. The new sports centre does not stand isolated alone but opens up to its surrounding and punching circulation through. The concept involves a bold arrival extending from the prominent thoroughfare which is donned in shimmering orange scales. Intended to create physical and visual interactions, the main spine brings in competitors and supporters to one common entry; inviting spectators and encourages passerby to pause and overlook into ongoing events. In addition, the space organization orchestrates a compact planning to correlate spaces according to its function in achieving high efficiency parallel to optimum gross floor area. Addressing environmental concerns with a blend of aesthetic, the feature screen is designed with a composition of translucent glass, aluminum cut-out of sportsman figurines and timber panel to allow abundant daylighting. A triple volume thoroughfare has also provided the opportunity for stack effect ventilation.

Connectivity via Sheltered Thoroughfare for inter-district linkage and the Open Plaza for intra-district linkage

WAVE MOVEMENT year

2014

site

Copenhagen, Denmark

project

Studio Air

10

Wave Movement was successfully crafted with the precision of parametric software. The beauty of this undulating surface is gradual; its peaks and depression were calculated in tandem with interlocking joints which holds the pavilion up without any columns. Instead, the shell distributes load through a waffle structure. In terms of spatial exploration, Wave Movement brings the objective of place-making. It is a giant tent apt for many kinds of outdoor events from performance to shelter. Flexible in function, Wave Movement can be installed at any open or even enclosed area and can be viewed as an urban sculpture within the city or landscape. Addressing current sustainability issues, Wave Movement is installed with solar panel to harvest energy on its roof and be a self-reliant structure. It is important for this ‘mobile tent’ to be self-packed with energy plans, smoothly supporting any event/function that it holds.

in-between (ɪnbɪˈtwiːn) informal noun 1. an intermediate thing or space

Inn Between aims to highlight the transitional territories which are built upon spatial contrasts within the cluster of functional programs. The in-between introduced a courtyard where users can bask in the sunlight and relax in the smell of nature from the abundant planting within. Also intertwining a circulation on the courtyard perimeter, the journey to main programs such as Hall, Seminar, Lounge and Restaurant radiates from the heart of the building. The courtyard is also envisioned as the space in-between which merges two different groups of users.

A module that demonstrates the construction processes with an on-going case study project by MCR Architects. Tasked to understand, draw and build a 1:20 detail model by retrieving information from construction drawings supplied by consultants. The process of planning, material selection and cross referencing different drawings require precise understanding of constructing to prevent extra work or in real life – time loss and extra cost. As deconstruction of the case study goes by, better alternatives are discovered and proposed during a Q&A presentation to the architect and builder.

The Concept is inspired by an analogy of a Tree. A “Tree’s” attributes includes strength and rootedness. These are similarly advocated by MND’s belief of community spirit and staying true to one’s roots. The building reflects it through its organic form and integral nature of programmes. The Site is located at Maxwell Road, at the heart of Singapore’s multiple textures of culture (Chinatown) and Society (URA). Therefore, there is a strong initiative for this design. The contours of the Site also affects the spaces and form, creating a large base following the slope on the base.

project

Year 3: dance school

14

Built primarily for dancers, this building seeks to house spaces inspired by Dancewriting; Labanotation where dancers share their achievements or experiences with the public. To aid in such sparks of interaction, internal gardens with water feature and landscape along elements like timber decks are introduced to provide a space where people can meet. Spaces are also designed with the ides of multiple usage. The reception foyer as, dressed up with landscaping can be well converted into a platform for dancers to practice as audiences from the pedestrian trails and the drop off point pour in to meet. Subsequently, outdoor viewing decks and internal foyer are also able to be manipulated for flexibility. In the effort of inviting audiences into the building, the cafe and shared resource centre brings people up to the upper floor of the building with specific programs. The retails and dance studios are also designed with flexible pivot panels to enlarge one internal space pouring to the outside, blurring the lines of boundary. The slanted walls and geometrical facade of the dance studios makes a statement of it’s prominence and importance, to elevate the pride and joy of a dancer’s second home. As a closure, the school housed in a cultural heritage area provides yet another common ground for people of all walks of life to come together in the niche of T.H.E Dance Company along Armenian street.

Tourist Information Kiosk

15

The concept driving the design of this project are these four words, traditionally untouched, radically transformed. Its intent is to create an alluring yet mystic assemble which draws users from afar and provide them a sense of discovery when in it. In addition, it would introduce an iconic modern stricture amidst the old historic buildings along the street of Qianmen while still giving attention to the site and the traditions in chinese history. Back in the ancient period of chinese history, the chinese paper lanterns serve as a guide or rather ancient torch lights to provide light where it’s dark. 明(ming), means light, clear to understand, in chinese. Thus the Tourist information Kiosk aims to provide understanding to users when they are lost, and noticeable when afar from its glow. The project is a modern interpretation of a historic and ingenious invention, the Chinese Lantern. It serves as a silhouette of the past in contrast to the ancient historic buildings along Qianmen street.

SOHO Residence

My aim is to provide an experiencing and connecting with nature and serenity space for the user. The connection between private and communal areas is seamlessly established as residents are barely able to notice the division; a graceful integration of two distinct spaces to better transition the activities available from one space to another. A polished and lustrous flow of movement throughout the residence. Serenity floods and encapsulates the ambience of the entire residence. An incredible sense of calmness and tranquility achieved in the midst of a bustling neighborhood. A gentle calmness so settling and persistent even in the most weary of days; it envelopes everything within its area of touch. Experience the harmonious unison between nature and the modern lifestyle. Be captivated by the elegant arrangement of the vegetation and the exquisite of the surrounding greenery. An immense peace invoked by the lush and alluring faces of nature.
