T H E S K I N N Y: Choose a subject and collect as much data and information as you can on that topic. Use your classmates and your peers to collect the variables. The subject matter is up to you. Get creative. Using that information, begin to visually represent your research through three visual solutions. The first poster is purely based on a typographic solution. The second, image. For the third, the computer is off limits. See what you can come up with when your computer is a tool rather than a solution. The end result: 3 posters 1. Image-based solution 2. Type-based solution 3. Non-computer based solution One bangin’ process book Well, let’s hop to it my friends.

REPRESENTING DATA: NUMBERS & STATISTICS

LEARNING THE ROPES: Being new to the infographic world, this project was a great learning experience in understanding how designing, organizing, and presenting information can mesh together in graphic design. I chose KU basketball as my topic because I thought it was something unique to our campus and could be taken in multiple creative directions as far as illustrating information. As far as work flow goes for this second project, I started out pretty slow. I didn’t initally have the foundation for infographics and so I soon learned that I needed to do my research and understand the elements before I start creating any of my own. And that transition from looking at examples to creating my own was a difficult one. I seemed to get too caught up in my concepts rather than organizing my data into readable material. But as I continued to look at examples and learn from my peers, I began to get the hang of things. Sometimes a designer’s job is simply to organize. Once I got that through my head it began to come a bit easier.

REPRESENTING DATA: NUMBERS & STATISTICS

N A R R OW I N G T H E T O P I C S : I orginally had 4 topics in mind: 1. KU basketball (the season was right around the corner, I couldn’t resist) 2. Grocery shopping 3. Good eats in Lawrence 4. Blood type (I had seen a really cool infographic in my research and wanted to see if I could make mine even better) I then surveyed my classmates and analyzed my data. It seemed like the best feedback (and the most interesting) was for KU basketball. Plus, Bill Self gave me a little nod at the Union that week so I figured it was a sign.

BRAINSTORMING/RESEARCHING/ CONCEPTING: With new, concrete data, I began to dig in and do my research. I collected photos and did several mind maps to get myself aquainted with the information that I was working with. I also looked at examples of infographics on Behance as well as Pinterest.

PHOTO INSPIRATION

KU BASKETBALL

is one of those things that you have to experience in order to believe all the hype. It’s hard to capture the feeling you get when you set foot in Allen Fieldhouse merely through a set of pictures. I knew from the start it was going to be a challenge capturing the Phog in all his glory but through research, pictures, & a whole lot of mind maps, I was able to develop a more narrow concept.

MIND MAPS

After building and concepting my ideas within the barriers of mind maps, I began to develop ideas that would translate into infographics. I took a red marker and circled any elements that had potential and then narrowed them down from there. While a lot of the design work I do is done at the design building, initial concepting is alwasy done in my disaster of a room.

MAKING THE ROUNDS After researching, concepting, and sketching, it was time to start developing actual compositions for our information to be presented. These next five sections depict the assignments for each of the class periods along with a short explanation and description on how I felt about each one. There definitely ups and downs in this project and it is easy to identify when these designs are placed side by side.

ROUND 1 5 pencil sketches for each of the 3 challenges (15 total). Take 2 of those concepts and put them into system creating a refined computer concept. Post 5 good infographic examples to your blog (see previous pages)

ROUND 2 Begin to refine ideas. Choose a final subject and proceed to tighter concepts. 5 tighter concepts for image, typographic, and non-computer (15 total posters). Should have final statistics by now.

ROUND 3 Make refinements based on class discussion. Post a comment or question to your blog (kwhiteman06.blogspot. com check it out, it’s on there). Begin to refine successful concepts. Choose 3 of each image, typographic, and non-computer to refine (9 total)

ROUND 4 Narrow down options to 2 posters for each category (6 total). How can your message be more clear? Begin to thing about your process book (more organized than the last one)

ROUND 5 Review your final 3 concepts. Big class critique. Narrow down to the final 3 posters. Mock up of process book.

The image - based compositions for the second round turned out to be much more challenging than I expected. I had a hard time illustrating information among text and images while still maintaining the infographic way. Because I lingered on this problem, I fell behind and was not able to crank out the 5 compositions that were assigned.

1. Images given through various elements of KU basketball with the main focus being the Fieldhouse 2. The locker-themed infographic resurfacing. The concept was there but the images were flat. Very flat. I lost my style here. 3. Another infographic using simple icons of my theme with a bouncing basketball as the core connecter. Again, this was very flat and was in dire need of some space

For the non-computer compositions for round two, I decided I needed to get back to my hand-drawn techniques. I narrowed my focus to just dealing with the senior studliness stastic. I developed a flowchart for how to choose which basketball player would be the best to date. I also started to develop an idea for a cut-paper composition (left picture).

In the very place where basketball was invented & perfected, KU students were polled on their knowledge & love for the sport that James Naismith & some peach baskets started way back when.

Rock Chalk Jayhawk. Waving the Wheat. Camping. Shredding newspaper until your fingers turn black. Yep. It’s that time of year when students start to major in Allen Fieldhouse rather

than anthropology or engineering. With a long, rich history and countless traditions, KU basketball remains close many students’ hearts. This study had KU students take a survey quizzing them on simple basketball trivia & famous traditions. Do you bleed crimson & blue?

This was my last composition for the non-computer based poster for round 4. It’s all hand-cut paper with varying mounting heights. I thought this was my most successfull composition out of the non-computer section but I was having trouble with readability and hierarchy. To solve this problem, I scanned each of the elements in individually, edited them within Photoshop, and placed them in Illustrator. I also hand-cut each of the characters for the title which was different from what I did here (where I was lazy and just printed it out).

FINAL POSTERS

1. Swooning for the Seniors (Image-based) 2. For the Love of the Fieldhouse, the Phog, and KU Basketball (Type-based) 3. Basketball at KU (Non-computer)

Designing infographics create great opportunities to make strides in learning design. They’re cholk full of information and it is your job to make it look clean, precise, easy to read, and well-designed. And as I end all of my projects, here are a few things I learned: 1. Don’t be afraid of white space. 2. Trust your gut. You yourself know more about the successfulness of your designs than you think. Go with it. You’re probably right. 3. Do good work but do it fast. Initally, it’s a matter of getting down all your ideas rather than perfecting just a few of them. 4. Mistakes are inevitable but failure is never an option. Embrace your set backs and fight like hell to climb your way back.
