PAPER FACTS:
FIVE FACTS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT PAPER Paper is commonly described as wasteful and the conversation around printing has usually been one-sided. We want to change that!

PAPER FACT 2:
PAPER FACT 3:
Paper is one of the most recycled products in the world.
Paper is actually sustainable.
Paper has one of the lowest carbon footprints.
Paper is mainly collected from trade, industry, and offices. However, 95% of households now also re-use or recycle their paper products.
Planted forests - the type that are used to produce paper – grow at a faster rate than regular forests and are more productive.
Wood is a renewable resource that stores carbon, and paper itself is also one of the smallest emitters of carbon on the planet.
They’re mostly useful as a preventative measure against soil degradation and erosion.
Here’s a quick comparison:
Since 1990, the recovery rate of paper has increased meaning more paper is being retrieved and recycled every year. Paper is predominantly used to produce more paper. Recovered fibres can be used for newsprint and packaging up to seven times. Paper and print industry’s environmental credentials offer Australian companies one of the most sustainable ways to operate.

When there is a healthy demand for paper, it encourages sustainable practices that protect and maintain forests in the long run. This also provides essential protection and shelter for crops and wildlife.
Printed mail accounts for 0.1% of
household CO2 emissions, the equivalent of five cheeseburgers. Paper contributes less to deforestation
than agriculture – which contributes to 62% of deforestation.
Did you know? Well-managed production forests reduce pressure on primary forests. They provide many environmental benefits including helping to maintain ecosystems and biodiversity. (Source https:// twosides.org.au/Planted-forests-are-bad-for-the-environment) 5
PAPER FACT 4:
PAPER FACT 5:
The alternatives aren’t always ‘greener’.
Paper uses renewable energy.
“Go Paperless”, “Go Green” and “Save Trees” are common messages seen these days as electronic forms of communication are pitched as the most attractive alternative, but electronic solutions are not always ‘greener’.
The production and manufacturing of paper uses renewable and recyclable resources to ensure sustainable processes.
Reading a newspaper can consume 20% less carbon than viewing news online. One email with a 400kb attachment sent to 20 people is equivalent to burning 100 light bulbs for 20 minutes. Paper is far more widely recycled than computers, mobile phones, tablets, and a variety of other electronic devices used today.

90% of electricity used to power paper mills is produced on site.
residuals, diverting material from landfills. This reduces waste decomposition and subsequently provides a reduction in the release of harmful greenhouse gasses.
More than half the paper industry uses bioenergy. This provides significant carbon reducing benefits to the environment. The forest products industry uses biomass
Did you know? Between 2015–2018, the Australian pulp and paper industry reduced its impact with direct greenhouse gas emissions to the energy equivalent of removing 29,192 cars off the road. (Source National Pulp & Paper Sustainability, 2018) Certified Sustainable Printing From Kwik Kopy

RECYCLING TECHNOLOGIES:
WHAT ABOUT RECYCLED PAPER? Understanding recycled paper doesn’t have to be confusing. Let’s simplify the jargon!

Recycled paper is made from wood or paper derived from reclaimed or re-used material. This means products are manufactured with post-consumer recycled fibre. K FSC Certified
K TCF / PCF
Denotes paper that is made of responsibly sourced wood fibre. K Carbon neutral
Products have been bleached without chlorine or not bleached at all. K FSC Recycled
Net zero carbon emissions. (Measured amounts of carbon are offset with verifiable carbon credits.)
Indicates 100% of the paper fibre is recycled.
Many imported paper products labelled as recycled are not always as they seem. Buying from local Australian businesses avoids misinformation and disappointment. Did you know? Paper recycling rates in Australia are amongst the highest in the world with over 87% of all paper and paperboard being recovered. (Source CEPI Sustainability Report, 2018)
