URBAN [UN]SEEN

Speech Clinics, Sound Archive and Story-telling Public Counselling Area First class candidate
Project Summary Urban (UN)Seen is a 2-part project ‘looking’ into the underlying issues of social segregation. The project began by questioning the meaning behind silence. Is it a static moment when all sounds are erased, or is it merely a break before the continuation of more music? Urban (UN) Seen concentrates on retracing lost sounds and voices, proposing a retrofit for the norm where we can celebrate sound and noise as just what they are – decibels. By taking users through a journey of sounds, the scheme of the building collects, displays, and transforms sounds to redefine its traditional preconception. Eventually, the building itself would also become a convergence of stories gathered by the people. As such, the project intends to break off the social stigma of putting people with speech difficulties at brinks. The project first realises a series of temporary interventions including a sheltered children’s playground, a suspended talk venue, and a parasitic commuter’s lounge. Urban (UN)Seen builds upon these interventions, where a speech clinic, a sound archive and a public counselling space unfold therein. The building establishes itself as a precedent of change, where sounds are made anew now but are reconstructed years after.
We live in a norm that privileges the eyes in making decisions. Therefore, to understand sounds we first need to [UN] see sounds. Spreading across River Medlock, two adjacent sites were [UN] ited by a spiral ramp that takes people on a journey of sounds.
Between the constructed future and the euphonic reality, we first need a place where voices were heard and stories were told. Make believing what’s been lost and now truly found - our own voice.

Day Care Centre and Housing Units for the Elderly and Young Adults Awarded first class (75%)
Project Summary Studio Project 2.2’s foci is to make use of comtemporary design to resolve urban relationships. My programmes are a day care centre and a housing unit that’s shared by 4 elderly and young adult. I made use of the existing greenery at site to create a biomimicked design that can blur the urban boundaries, and help the residents to improve their health and social lives. I came up with a HMO housing scheme where a housing block is shared by two units on the ground floor and second floor respectively. These two units are both kitchenless. The open kitchen and living space are then combined and shared on the first floor. This scheme is to break off the differences by creating co-living space and help merging the two diverging generations.

MOVE SPACE
Tutor: Carma Masson (carmamasson.blogspot.co.uk/)
Public Performance Space Awarded first class (75%)
Project Summary I explored architecture by studying danicng movements, a performance stage is then designed in Thomas Street, Northern Quarter, Manchester City. My chosen dance move is a contemporary style, and I’ve taken design inspiration from a song called ‘The Night We Met’ by Lord Huron. The flow of dance movements were studied following the tempo, rhythm and melody of the song. An organic structure that imitates the ups and downs of hand gesture was designed with acoustic consideration in order to provide the best performing experience in the stage. The facade mimics the various rhythms throughout the song which forms a wavy feature. Concrete, metal and plaster were used to create a rigid, heavy and dense structure echoing the emotions from the melancholic song.
