information to KY dairy producers for their protection and to improve our environment. The Young Dairy Producer Conference and the KY Dairy Partners Meeting had the best attendance ever. Over 130 attended the YDPC and 225 – 250 attended the KDPM. Gary Sipiorski, Dairy Developmental Manager for Vita Plus and financial advisor kept the group on the edge of their seats as he shared a wealth of knowledge and information. Dr. Sam Leadley, P.C., Attica Veterinary Clinic, is recognized internationally as one of the top specialists on raising calves. He was a crowd favorite as he talked about how to get the most from your calf feeding strategies. The KDDC hosted a three day tour to Missouri in the last of June. The trip focused on pasture grazing and utilizing forages you grow for maximum margins. Taking shorter trips to states adjacent to KY

s we reflect on 2014, it will be remembered as one the most profitable times is dairy farming. Milk prices broke all records with the All-Milk Price averaging $23.97, $3.92 higher than 2013. Locally, KY dairy farmers reported milk checks exceeding $30.00 per hundredweight for milk with high components and excellent quality. Feed prices retracted some during the year; however soybean meal prices continued to take a bite out of the margins. With that being said, there were some producers still catching up from 2012 and even 2009. The KDDC focused attention on water quality and environment issues. We teamed with Dr. Stephen Higgins, Director of Above: The Compton Family, Kentucky’s 2014 Animal and EnvironmentalTop Quality Producer of the Year. Compliance with the University of KY and Joe Cain, Right: Governor Steve Beshear signs the 2014 Kentucky Farm Bureau to Dairy Month Proclamation host six regional Agricultural water quality and nutrient management meetings. The meetings aptly named, “Poo Begins with benefits in You” were designed to provide information to producers on the KY Ag producers Water Quality Plan and its Nutrient Management Plan component seeing how and to facilitate compliance requirements. An issue in meeting Division others may of Water requirements is for producers to have a KY No Discharge operate in an environment not so unlike their own. We also hosted the Operational Permit. Dairy producers with liquid lagoon systems and World Dairy Expo trip and farm tour. Tom Lorensen, Alltech’s dairy discharge milk house waste water are required by the DOW to have an specialist, showed 55 plus farmers and students around to see some updated KYNDOP. The KDDC continues to work to bring educational unique and outstanding dairy operations in WI. Cont’d on page 2

Cont’d from page 1 The KDDC Dairy Consultants have worked hard in visiting KY dairy farmers throughout the year. Nearly 700 dairy farms were visited at least once and over 50 percent of all farms were visited two or more times by the regional consultants. Many promotional and educational meetings were also attended during the year. This fulfills the mission to education, represent and promote KY dairy farmers. We also saw the departure of two very good KDDC staff members; Willy Campbell in Northern KY and Teri Atkins in Central KY as they left to pursue other positions. Both did an excellent job working for dairy farmers while with the KDDC. We wished them the best and were thankful that we had a very talented group of applicants apply to fill the positions. Jennifer Hickerson, NKY was hired in February and Beth Cox, CKY was hired in November. We have been blessed to have such capable people apply and work for the KDDC. KY dairy farmers are becoming more and more efficient in producing high levels of quality milk per cow. We have found farmers respect and learn from other farmers more than any other source. So the KDDC teamed up with Alltech to host six meetings on farms with herds averaging 80 plus pounds of milk per cow and Somatic Cell Counts consistently lower than 250K. The meetings were held in October and were well attended. We plan to have more meetings in 2015 like these. The KDDC MILK Program once again was on track to break production and premium distribution records. In three quarters $945,154.02 on 134,726,474 lbs. of milk were distributed to MILK Program KY Producers. We saw more producers receiving premiums than ever in 2014 with 77 percent of the 213 producers in the program receiving premiums in the first three quarters of the year. We cannot go forward without thanking all the supporters and sponsors of the KDDC. So many allied industry organizations have contributed tremendous amounts of time and money to make sure this dairy farmer organization succeeds. There have been countless hours spent by dairy farmer directors and industry board members. They have taken time from their operations and businesses to attend meetings and strategy sessions in order to protect and move KY’s dairy industry forward. We applaud you. And of course we cannot go without recognizing the Kentucky Agricultural Development Fund for the confidence they displayed in approving the KDDC grant for 2015 and 2016. We can’t say it enough how fortunate and blessed Kentucky Agriculture is for The KADF. The Kentucky dairy industry thanks you once again!

What if you could get more milk from the same feed? Adding Alltech’s protein solutions to your feed can: • Enhance fiber digestion

The ALLTECH PROTEIN MANAGEMENT program provides a consistent, high quality source of protein to your herd, giving them the protein and energy they need to produce at their peak even during times of environmental or production stress. The ALLTECH PROTEIN MANAGEMENT program outlines the products and solutions that suit your herd best, fitting the same nutrients in a smaller package and making your feed work harder, so your cows don’t have to.

• Support milk production • Optimize rumen efficiency, giving you more with less • Provide flexibility in your ration, allowing for use of more on farm forages

Alltech has been providing nutritional solutions to farmers around the world for more than 30 years through innovations like ALLTECH® DEMP and OPTIGEN®. Alltech.com
