2017 - Dairy Awards Banquet By Maury Cox

T

wo years ago it was decided to hold the Dairy Awards Banquet during the first evening of the Young Dairy Producer conference and the Kentucky Dairy Partners Meeting. The meetings held in February every year has proven to be a good decision, based on the full dining room. Award recognition includes the top official DHIA milk production herds for the state and the 12 districts of the KDDC. A special proficiency award is also given which incorporates multiple factors calculated through DHIA. The 2016 Milk Production winner was Scenic View Dairy, Kenneth and Matthew Horst, Waynesburg, KY with 33,061 lbs. of milk and 1,160 lbs. of fat. The top herd RHA Milk for a non-Holstein herd was Fairdale Farm, the Richard Sparrow Family from Owenton, KY with 26,346 lbs. of milk

and 1,115 lbs. of fat. The Proficiency Award went to Scenic View Dairy as well. This year’s awards saw two KY herds exceed 30,000 pounds of milk RHA. Special thanks go to Kentucky Farm Bureau for sponsoring the monetary awards every year to the production award winners. Milk quality is also recognized with 10 producers being nominated for low somatic cell counts and bacteria counts. Monthly official tests for both criteria were calculated and then averaged for the month to decide the winner. Several herds were under 125,000 SCC while the state winner was under 100,000. The 2016 winner was Adam and Angela Ping, Ping Dairy from Eubank, KY. Second place was Roger Lawhorn, Lawhorn Dairy from Columbia, KY. There are many in the dairy industry that brings attention to the promotion of dairy products. Each year the American Dairy Association of KY singles out one person that has spent a lifetime of promoting dairy and dairy products and making a significant Cont’d on pg. 12
