Stanley Stout Center The Kansas State University Department of Animal Sciences and Industry has a long-standing tradition of producing and managing outstanding livestock for teaching, research and outreach purposes. Marketing is an essential component of the learning process for K-State AS&I students. The first opportunity for such an event was the Special “K” cattle sale in 1977, which was the first of its kind in the nation. Now known as the Legacy Sale, it is an annual tradition and has been joined in past years by both K-State sheep and horse sales. Livestock sales events at K-State have remained unique over the years, as they are organized and managed by students. The K-State Stanley Stout Center will allow students to showcase the results of their talents and efforts in a state-of-the-art facility. While the primary function of the Stout Center will be to host the Legacy Sale, its location in proximity to campus and the K-State livestock units lends itself to numerous teaching activities and industry events. It will provide an all-weather location for various hands-on courses, extension seminars, live animal demonstrations, and nonuniversity livestock events and sales.

Dear Friends,
213 Weber Hall Manhattan, KS 66506–0201 (785) 532-6131 fax: (785) 532-7059 www.asi.ksu.edu
On behalf of the K-State Livestock Sales Management class and the Department of Animal Sciences and Industry, welcome to the 38th Annual Legacy Sale! We are excited about this year’s offering and feel it is our best to date. We hope you will join us Friday, March 6th, 2015. Our commitment to our customer is to provide cattle that will be profitable in a variety of situations. Utilizing the latest technology, we have set out to build cattle that perform in a variety of operations. Look through the long list of calving ease bulls for use on heifers in all three breeds. Find the bulls in the upper percentiles in carcass traits to hit premium targets, and the high growth bulls that produce more payweight at weaning. Look for your next elite show heifer prospect or breeding piece to strengthen your herd. These females will not disappoint. They were selected from the heart of the herd, and we are confident they will do as good of a job for you as they have for us. As a department, we take great pride in our university, our cattle, and especially our students. We encourage you to get to know this group of future beef industry leaders as you browse the pens on sale day. Thanks for taking the time to look through this catalog. We strive for customer satisfaction before and after the sale and we are confident that we can help you find cattle that will add profit to your operation. Feel free to contact us or stop by at any time, regarding the sale offering. We look forward to seeing you March 6th. Sincerely,
Kenneth Odde David Nichols Kansas State University, County Extension Councils, Extension Districts, and U.S. Department of Agriculture Cooperating.

General Information Individual Animal Information
All performance information in this catalog is correct to the best of our knowledge. Data was taken from the respective breed associations in February 2015. All measures taken are adjusted by age according to each individual breed association. Performance data followed by an asterisk (*) denotes the weight or measure is actual and is not adjusted for age. Updated performance, breeding, ultrasound and DNA information may be made available in the form of a supplement sheet on the Internet and on sale day. All cattle in the sale are free of Idiopathic Epilepsy (IE), Hypotrichosis (HY), Arthrogryposis Multiplex (AM), Neuropathic Hydrocephalus (NH), Contractural Arachnodactyly (CA) and Developmental Duplication (DD). Expected Progeny Difference (EPD), is the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus. EPDs are the best overall prediction of differences in progeny performance and are useful tools that aid in selection; however, EPDs DO NOT PREDICT an actual level of performance. For example, a bull with a birth weight EPD of +3.0 should sire calves approximately two pounds heavier than a bull with a birth weight EPD of +1.0. The actual weight of the calf will depend upon environmental factors. EPDs can be used to compare cattle within a breed but CANNOT be used to compare cattle of different breeds. Spring 2015 average EPDs for the breeds represented in this sale.

Explanation of Common EPDs
Calving Ease Direct (CED) is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. Birth Weight EPD (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny. Weaning Weight EPD (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny. Yearling Weight EPD (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny. Scrotal Circumference EPD (SC), expressed in centimeters, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit scrotal size to his progeny. Calving Ease Maternal (CEM) is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf daughters. Maternal Milk EPD (Milk) is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters. Intramuscular Fat EPD (%IMF) is a predictor of the difference in a sire’s progeny for percent intramuscular fat in the ribeye muscle. Ribeye Area EPD (RE) is a predictor of the difference in square inches of ultrasound ribeye area of a sire’s progeny. Fat Thickness EPD (FAT), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the difference in ultrasound fat thickness at the 12th rib of a sire’s progeny.
Angus $Value Indexes
$Value indexes are multi-trait selection indexes to assist beef producers by adding simplicity to genetic selection decisions. $Values are reported in dollars per head, where a higher value is more favorable. The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires in the database if the sires were randomly mated to cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment. Cow Energy Value ($EN), expressed in dollars savings per cow per year, assesses differences in cow energy requirements as an expected dollar savings difference in daughters of sires. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals (more dollars saved on feed energy expenses). Weaned Calf Value ($W), expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for preweaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk, and mature cow size. Feedlot Value ($F), expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for post-weaning merit compared to progeny of other sires. Grid Value ($G), expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for carcass grid merit compared to progeny of other sires. It may be the best carcass decision tool for focusing on quality and red meat yield simultaneously. Beef Value ($B), expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for post-weaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires.
Hereford $Value Indexes
Baldy Maternal Index ($BMI), used for selecting commercial Hereford bulls for use on Angus-cross cows and heifers, where replacement heifers will be raised. Retained ownership of steers and cull heifers through the feedlot phase is assumed, with fed cattle marketed on a Certified Hereford Beef (CHB) program grid. Calving EZ Index ($CEZ), used for selecting commercial Hereford bulls for use on yearling heifers only. This index has increased emphasis on direct and maternal calving ease compared with the other indexes. Brahman Influenced Index ($BII), is similar to BMI$, except Hereford bulls are used in a rotational crossbreeding system with Brahman, rather than Angus. Certified Hereford Beef Index ($CHB), a terminal sire index, where Hereford bulls are mated to British-cross cows, and all offspring are sold as fed cattle on a CHB grid.
Simmental EPDs and $Value Indexes
Stayability is expressed as the probability that an animal’s daughters will remain in production to at least six years of age when compared to the daughters of another animal. Expressed as deviations from a 50% probability, a higher value indicates increased stayability. All-Purpose Index (API) evaluates sires being bred to both first calf heifers and mature cows with a portion of their daughters being retained for breeding and the cull heifers and steers are fed out. This index includes both production models and maternal values to form an all-inclusive selection tool. Terminal Index (TI) is designed for evaluating sires’ economic merit in situations where they are bred to mature cows and all offspring go to the feedlot. Consequently, maternal traits such as maternal calving ease, maternal weaning weight and female fertility are not considered in the index.

7B is an all around bull for any producer. He ranks in the top 3% or better for CE, Marb, API, and TI. Beyond his respectable growth numbers, he is one of the most phenotypically sound bulls in our Simmenatal lineup. Thickness, masculinity, and his eye appealing nature make him stand out in any group.

Tripp is by Lil Savage Whiz sired by Topsail Whiz, NRHA’s first $10 million sire. On the bottom he has cutting’s first “Triple Crown” champion, Smart Little Lena. This gentle gelding has the pedigree to prove he will be a champion in the reining and working cow horse. His laid back personality and trainability will make him an excellent youth or amateur prospect. Tripp has also gathered cattle from the pasture and been started roping the Hot Heels. Tripp’s slight conformational fault of an overbite has never affected his training or health and does well just on pasture.
Brogan is by Chic Please, a $2 million sire who competed well in both the reining and working cow horse pens, and out of KSU Lil Mo Badger by ML Great Badger. Brogan has the most rides of any of the sale horses. He is athletic and a quick learner with a great personality. Brogan has the most roping experience as well and is a natural stopper, making him an excellent heel horse prospect. He has been hauled to several ropings and heeled live cattle. Don’t pass up the chance to own this fun, talented gelding.

Ranger is by Roosters Wrangler who is an NRHA Open Futurity Reserve Champion by the legendary $3.7 million sire, Gallo Del Cielo. He is out of an own daughter of 6666 Ranch stallion Sixes Pick (AQHA World Champion and Versatility Ranch Horse Champion). Ranger is a moderately sized, gentle gelding with an excellent start on him. His willing attitude and talent will allow him to succeed in the show pen or on the ranch for any level rider and a supreme candidate for the popular Ranch Horse and Ranch Pleasure competitions. He has gathered cows in a pasture, worked on live cattle in the arena and started on the Hot Heels.
Katey is our last own daughter of the now late Buckaroo Bueno Chex that is offered for sale. Buckaroo Bueno Chex has an AQHA Superior in reining, heading and healing. This is a really stout, well-made mare that is full of athleticism and natural cow sense. She is the most versatile in her experience, as she has done both heading and heeling with the Hot Heels, gathered cows out of pasture, and even roped and dragged a bull onto a trailer. Katey is bred to work and has the conformation and motor to go all day. She will be best suited for the rancher who will use her every day.

Jack is by First Fletch (Life Time Earnings $45,000, top 10 AQHA Junior Cutting), by Royal Fletch (Offspring earnings over $1 million) and out of Sannys CD, an own daughter of the famous CD Olena (Offspring Earnings over $14 million). Jack has the natural ability to work cows in the pen or on the ranch. He has come along nicely in his training as he stops well, spins, and picks up his leads willingly. He is very gentle and will mature to have the size needed to work all day on the ranch for any task you give him.
Rey is a daughter of TAMU Nu Bar Rey, by Nu Bar (Reserve World Champion in cutting) and out KSU Heavenly Peppy, by 6666 Ranch stallion Seven From Heaven (World Champion cutting) by Playgun. Rey is cute and stout who is a favorite to ride among all the students in all settings inside and outside the arena. She is a quick learner and her natural cow sense has made her easy to start on the Hot Heels and on live cattle as well as gather cattle out of the pasture.

history.
Kansas State University’s purebred beef herd was established in 1881 with the purchase of an Aberdeen-Angus heifer, Eyebright 4th 7131 (7446) from the Ontario Agricultural College. A Hereford bull and heifer, Parley 30782 and Miss Beau Real 7th 30781, were purchased from George Fowler, Maple Hill, Kansas in 1888. These two breeds made up the herd until it was disposed in 1897 due to tuberculin test reactions and an order from the Board of Regents. The Board’s order was the result of concern across the state that K-State’s cattle should be “practical farmer’s livestock” instead of purebred animals. The herd was then reestablished in 1901 with seven different breeds of beef, dairy and dual-purpose cattle.
Purebred Beef Teaching Unit
The Purebred Beef Teaching Unit annually runs nearly 300 breeding-age purebred Angus, Hereford, and Simmental cows on 4,000 acres of native bluestem grass. The main headquarters is located in Manhattan at the edge of campus on the corner of Denison and Kimball Avenue. This location houses bull testing facilities, heifer development yard, show barn and office. Mature females are maintained northeast of town about ten miles at the esteemed Cedar Creek Ranch headquarters. This ranch, located just off Highway 13, serves an instrumental role in the teaching aspect of our operation. Here, students have the opportunity to participate in real-world scenarios of beef production and pasture management. These students are employed by the K-State Beef Barn for the 2014 - 2015 year: Tanner Brunner, Reed Gleason, Tyler Haerr, Esther McCabe, Cody Thies, Colton Lowry, Jared Bourek, Riley McKenney and Caden Lynch.
Mission and Purpose
Our mission is to provide undergraduate students with practical experience in breeding, feeding, management and marketing of purebred seedstock as well as give livestock selection, general animal science courses, and students from colleges across the nation the opportunity to evaluate quality cattle. Each year hundreds of students utilize cattle raised at this unit. The herd also provides an opportunity to demonstrate breeding programs for genetic improvement of seedstock, using tools like performance testing, artificial insemination, embryo transfer and ultrasound carcass evaluation. Applied research trials are conducted using cattle produced in this herd, such as cloning technology, synchronized artificial insemination, feed efficiency and feed additive research. Cattle are also employed for teaching purposes in classes such as Livestock Sales Management, Pregnancy Diagnosis, Bovine Calving, Livestock and Meat Evaluation, and used for competition in the annual Little American Royal. A portion of the cattle produced in this herd are merchandized in the annual “Legacy” Bull and Female Sale held the first Friday in March. This sale is unique to the nation because it is engineered entirely by students to give them hands-on, practical experience in purebred cattle marketing.

Show Accolades
K-State has compiled many show accolades in all three breeds, including 2002 NWSS Grand Champion Horned Hereford Female, 2002 NWSS Reserve Champion Simmental Female, 2005 NWSS National Champion Simmental Bull, and many other state and regional championships. More recently, KSU Bounty Hunter 611, the high-selling bull in the 2007 Special K Sale, was named Reserve National Champion Bull at the 2007 and 2008 Canadian Agribition. A son of 611, Big-Gully 611 Bounty 517U, was named RBC Supreme Champion Bull over all breeds, and progeny were part of the Champion Hereford Getof-Sire, Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor at the 2010 Agribition. KSU Wildcat 656 ET, high-selling bull in the 2008 Legacy Sale, was named Champion Bull at the 2008 Iowa State Fair, 2008 Kansas State Fair and reserve champion at the 2008 State Fair of Texas. KSU Legacy 654 ET was named Reserve Champion bull at the Missouri State Fair. KSU Star Power 40W was named 2010 Kansas State Fair Champion Simmental Bull. This exposure has attracted students from all over the United States and Canada to enroll at K-State and continue the legacy of excellence in purebred beef cattle breeding.
Production Sales
The first Special K production sale was held in 1977. It was unique to the nation because it was a university sale organized and managed by students. A sale has been held each school year since 1977. Early sales rotated between Angus, Simmental and Hereford cattle and included females. In 1987, it was decided to sell all breeds in one annual bull sale. K-State’s most distinguished animal was the Angus heifer, Manhattan Gal. Her national reputation was the momentum behind the first Special K Edition sale. Manhattan Gal was the Supreme Champion Individual at the 1976 Angus Futurity, and the Grand Champion Angus Female at the American Royal, North American International Livestock Exposition and the National Western Stock Show. The highest selling individual in a Special K sale was Slammer K 04147, a Hereford bull. He was purchased in 1981 by C K Hereford Ranch, Brookville, Kansas, for $12,500. In 2011, a Hereford bull, KSU Revolution 021, commanded $11,100 and went to K-State alums Austin and Emilie Fink and Mike and Shelia Miller of Womelsdorf, PA. K-State’s highest selling female to date was Miss Kansas K 3G, a Simmental donor cow sold at the National Western Stock Show for $16,500. In 2008, the name of the K-State production sale was changed to the “Legacy” sale to honor 127 years of continuous beef improvement. The K-State Purebred Beef Teaching Unit might be the most unique experience offered to current and potential students in agricultural colleges across the nation. The educational opportunities available to students producing, promoting and merchandising high quality purebred cattle continues to play a fundamental role in a program that has been nationally recognized for excellence in teaching as well as contributing to the outstanding alumni support received by the Kansas State Department of Animal Sciences and Industry.
