IDENTIFY POTENTIAL PROGRAM TO BE EXPANDED AND REPURPOSED

IDENTIFY SPACE IN RELATION TO CONTEXT AND ITS OWN FUNCTION

PUSH RELATED PROGRAM OUTWARDS

PUSH SELF-CONTAINED PROGRAM INWARDS

WRAP AND LANDSCAPING

skin concept

The strategy looks at how program expansion can draw public realm into the space. The building becomes an attractor to its surrounding context. In order to establish better human occupation and fullfill human needs over time, repurpose and expansion is uncontainable. The change is by diminishing the excessive, in this case existing program that is not as relevant anymore, as well as augmenting linked program towards context. Then, permeable attraction to public realm is achieved.

Skin Strategy for Program Expansion Applied to Library within Campus Environment The refurbishment of Matheson Library aims to provide space for the growing number of students, and responds to campus study and living style by supporting mental health to boost student productivity. The plugged in program also functions after campus hours, therefore activating the public ground at night. This is achieved through physical activity, food, well lit study spaces, art, and social space. The library role is no longer as physical resources, but a social space as digital technology provides resources. The pushed out and in spaces respond to surrounding context, allowing flow of people from other buildings into the library. For example, the cafe area with dining is expanded towards Campus centre, while the gallery is expanded within the building while opening circulation to the public realm. Unique program, such as study camp pods, allow activation of the building at night as well as creating opportunity for students to study after hours.

Transforming an Old Factory into a Residential Building and Public Facility The strategic location of this historical wool factory in Macaulay which is close to the Macaulay station is a great opportunity to develop a residential building. The site which is within the circle of North Melbourne Community Centre area leads to the idea of introducing youth and culture facilities that is lacking in the existing facilities. Furthermore, a proposed park on the east side of the building enhances the opportunity to connect directly with public realm. Being particularly interested in relationships in different scale, the concept of this project promotes the variety of interactions and facilities shared within a neighbourhood.

How can we create a choreography between art, technology and science, by rethinking a new educational facility that is future thinking, highly intermingled, celebrates human ingenuity and creativity, and provides students with necessary forward thinking skills and education, to maintain personal relevance in a high tech world? We are critiquing the current TAFE model, as it is outdated and is leaving students with obsolete qualifications. Moving away from a faculty designed curriculum, towards a high degree of self-direction but maintaining a strong culture and social institution, focused around the themes of Science, Art and Technology. The School where face to face, academic led dialogue and speculation is polished, creating a community of learners and educators, exploring and sharing knowledge.
