IDENTIFY POTENTIAL PROGRAM TO BE EXPANDED AND REPURPOSED

skin concept

The strategy looks at how program expansion can draw public realm into the space. The building becomes an attractor to its surrounding context. In order to establish better human occupation and fullfill human needs over time, repurpose and expansion is uncontainable. The change is by diminishing the excessive, in this case existing program that is not as relevant anymore, as well as augmenting linked program towards context. Then, permeable attraction to public realm is achieved.

Skin Strategy for Program Expansion Applied to Library within Campus Environment The refurbishment of Matheson Library aims to provide space for the growing number of students, and responds to campus study and living style by supporting mental health to boost student productivity. The plugged in program also functions after campus hours, therefore activating the public ground at night. This is achieved through physical activity, food, well lit study spaces, art, and social space. The library role is no longer as physical resources, but a social space as digital technology provides resources. The pushed out and in spaces respond to surrounding context, allowing flow of people from other buildings into the library. For example, the cafe area with dining is expanded towards Campus centre, while the gallery is expanded within the building while opening circulation to the public realm. Unique program, such as study camp pods, allow activation of the building at night as well as creating opportunity for students to study after hours.

How can we create a choreography between art, technology and science, by rethinking a new educational facility that is future thinking, highly intermingled, celebrates human ingenuity and creativity, and provides students with necessary forward thinking skills and education, to maintain personal relevance in a high tech world? We are critiquing the current TAFE model, as it is outdated and is leaving students with obsolete qualifications. Moving away from a faculty designed curriculum, towards a high degree of self-direction but maintaining a strong culture and social institution, focused around the themes of Science, Art and Technology. The School where face to face, academic led dialogue and speculation is polished, creating a community of learners and educators, exploring and sharing knowledge.

Setting an example of how future education can be considered and how it can function within a vertical typology, as a response to the new available land and rapidly increasing density of these suburbs. Acting as a contextual facilitator for the immediate cluster of surrounding schools in Noble Park, the new School also attempts to connect other existing educational precincts on a macro scale along the whole viaduct of the Caulfield/Dandenong line, while also boldly establishing itself within Noble Park.

Particularly targeting students in transition from secondary school, as well as providing exposure to primary school students. The School also welcomes people to use certain facilities which can be booked out, such as the fab lab or start up spaces, as well as upskilling or reskilling in particular interests.

MASTER PLAN

Conceptual Master Plan Focusing on the Island’s Ecology This master plan project focuses on the preservation of ecology through different platforms and investigates issues of zoning arrangement throughout Heron Island Research Station (HIRS). interactive area: - raising awareness of climate change through eco-tourism.

preserving and improving the ecology - three concepts research area: - solving man-made problems through studying natural structures and processes.

student & tutor accomodation - condensing building footprints to give land back to the island.

As a part of the Great Barrier Reef coral cay, Heron Island’s existing ecology holds important historical, cultural and education values. Heron Island ecology is defined by its rich tropical coral cay, flora, and fauna. The scheme propose to divide HIRS into zones according to the level of the privacy and its demographics. The programs are rearranged to isolate restricted areas that are currently spread within the site. The site is divided into 3 individual projects, interactive area, research area, and student & staff accommodation. Note: Project explored in details on this folio is highlighted in red (interactive area).

“The old education was for a few, and it was sedentary; the new education is for all and it is active.” Modern education promotes interactive learning that allows public to access the study subject itself. Education is carried through visual, audio, and kinaesthetic learning. According to Howard Gardner, this is linked to multiple intelligences possessed by human. They are musical-rhythmic, visual-spatial, verbal-linguistic, logical-mathematical, bodily-kinesthetic, interpersonal, intrapersonal, and naturalistic. Through their intelligence, human is able to interpret, observe, and be aware of their surrounding context.

As an educational platform within Great Barrier Reef, the current study space in Heron Island Research Station (HIRS) is isolated from the subjects. Connecting the outdoor and indoor is critical to allow academics to engage with the context of the island which is the main object of the study. As a historical research centre that has begun since 1937, the buildings in Heron Island holds historical value. The existing is treated as relics in mnemonic journey, paralleling from the old to the new. This project seeks to explore architecture as platforms that allow occupants to learn about HIRS history, systems, activities and its study subjects through a series of fragmented spaces.

Transforming an Old Factory into a Residential Building and Public Facility The strategic location of this historical wool factory in Macaulay which is close to the Macaulay station is a great opportunity to develop a residential building. The site which is within the circle of North Melbourne Community Centre area leads to the idea of introducing youth and culture facilities that is lacking in the existing facilities. Furthermore, a proposed park on the east side of the building enhances the opportunity to connect directly with public realm. Being particularly interested in relationships in different scale, the concept of this project promotes the variety of interactions and facilities shared within a neighbourhood.

Public Realm The ground floors are seen as the extension of the proposed park, drawing people by allowing access both sides with changing levels. This permeability is framed by a series of pods housing community and amenity programs. The programs on public realm is spread across the building, creating activation to the building as a whole during the day and night. Selections are based on the activity hour of the programs. This leads to the use of polycarbonate and glazing as its finishing to create activation on the ground floors using light.

Family-Student-Young Professional Apartments and Lofts with Community Centre Based on the study of demographics, they are expecting students, perseverance of young professionals, and desires to appeal to families. Therefore, this project is seen as a series of segments. The lowest two levels serve as public realm and amenity while the next three floors are apartments and the last two levels are lofts with a roof terrace shared among the residents. The two cores act as a buffer space that connect three distinct neighbourhoods, which are families, students, and young professionals respectively from the north. Each neighbourhood is treated with different apartment and shared spaces based on the level of interaction of each neighbourhood. For young professionals, the shared space focuses on dining while families are designated space for kids. In the case of students, they are oriented around cooking and living. Different type of apartments are provided to appeal to diversity of residents. Dual acesss of duplex and single access simplex are available for students and a semidetached self-maintained studio is available for family apartments in the forms of triplexes. Expansion of the Oldest Australian Prison With the theme of parasitic architecture, this studio challenges the relationship of the old and the new with its climate and surrounding context. Round House, which is considered to be one of the oldest buildings in Australia used to be a prison made out of local limesotnes. Despite the history, this building is open to public as museum. The surrounding area is often used for special events such as wedding as well. These usage encourage the idea of developing this Round House into a better museum such as creating access and more spaces that is currently lacking. As the focal point of Fremantle, a motel would be suitable as it is required in the project. The main idea is to feature its panopticon idea to create new access and view points. Minimal structure and translucent facade contrasts the existing Round House. These glasses are fritted to reduce the heat from the harsh sun. The attachable eaves on the windows are installed with PV cell to produce electricity independently. Making use of the high rain rate, unused well is utilized to to water the park next to the building, cooling, and water usage.

Located right in front of South Yarra station, this triangular public park is bound by railways on two sides and residential area on the other side. It is found to be a perfect extension of the existing community centre as it is located in the central of its suburban area. Weaving alternation of the space aims for a more delicate programmatic changes in the park. It produces a firm yet natural segmentation of spaces. The issue of access is eased by bridges that allows changes in view points with smooth transition of height. The main entrance particularly making used of the existing tram stop to invite more people onto this park. The boundary of the park to existing neighbourhood is improved by landscaping along the existing fence to limit the view points of the park visitors towards the existing house.
