EXPO CHICAGO 2012
Nyehaus and Nye + Brown (Booth #502) are pleased to announce their participation in Expo Chicago, which will take place September 20th through September 23rd at Chicago’s historic Navy Pier. Nyehaus will present a solo booth of new works by pioneering Light and Space artist, Peter Alexander. Alexander, who initially studied architecture, changed his course to producing art works in the mid-1960’s. Exploiting the transparent and reflective properties of plastics and resins, Alexander created works that responded to the atmospheric conditions of the rooms in which they are displayed. Peter Alexander’s plastic fields of translucent color burn the retina. Poured, tinted resin is detonated by light, bringing to mind molten pink lava, suddenly
cooled and frozen in time. Drops of pigment are measured precisely by the Alchemist. The curing process, however, has a life of its own: a drop in temperature, moisture in the Pacific air or the sense of post-coital elation are powerful agents, subverting precision. Each work is as different from the next as they are similar: identical twins’ genetic material spliced in two, duplicated as perfect imperfections. A special thanks to Beto Casillas who is instrumental to the fabrication process of Peter’s work. Nye + Brown will present a two person booth featuring the works of Judy Chicago and Brian Wills, succinctly bridging two generations of West Coast Minimalism. The works to be exhibited by Judy Chicago will focus largely on her early abstract period, created between 1965-70, as well as her pre-feminist works, 1970-74. Largely unknown to a wider audience, Chicago began her career by creating an extensive body of minimal art works, some of which were exhibited in Primary Structures at the Jewish Museum in 1965. The paintings of Brian Wills, while using relatively few materials: thread, paint, and wood, dance between radical color line compositions and minimal reflective fields. Looser compositions and application of industrial polyurethane harness light and alter perception. Unlike the stripped down reductive cool minimalism of the east coast, the work of Judy Chicago and Brian Wills embrace color, surface and sensory experience akin to the Light and Space movement of the west coast.

PETER ALEXANDER
Born in 1939, Peter Alexander grew up in Newport Beach, California and later moved to Los Angeles. Initially studying architecture, Alexander shifted his course to art in the mid-1960s and began creating sculptures. Alexander exploited the transparent, reflective, and colorful properties of plastics and resins to make objects that respond to the particular atmospheric conditions of the rooms in which they are displayed. As with works by other artists associated with the Light and Space movement—such as Robert Irwin, Craig Kauffman, Larry Bell—these objects create ever-shifting experiences for the viewers who encounter them. His work can be found in the collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Museum of Modern Art, New York.

BRIAN WILLS
Brian Wills was born in 1970 in Lexington, Kentucky. His paintings, consisting of densely woven, intersecting bands of color, give multiplied dimension to the picture plane. This gesture is then repeated and grows to monumental scales. Other works take a more subtle approach. Looser compositions and application of industrial polyurethane harness light and alter perception. Wills carefully commands the line to induce optical sensations as the liquid surface gives way to limitless reflection. Wills is a graduate of Denison and Harvard Universities. His work is included in the Frederick R. Weisman Foundation, Jarl Mohn Family Foundation, and the Dallas Price Van Breda collection. He has exhibited extensively throughout the US and abroad.
