Nye + Brown is pleased to present an exhibition of paintings by Natalie Arnoldi titled

34 Degrees North. Referring to her LA roots as well as global positioning, Arnoldi is the daughter of another California native, famed artist Charles Arnoldi. Los Angeles and its proximity to the ocean has been the driving force behind Arnoldi’s artistic and academic practice. Concurrently pursuing a M.S. and B.S. in ocean science and marine biology at Stanford University, Natalie has found a synergy in painting and biology: two endeavors that might appear counter intuitive. Instead, each has given Arnoldi a unique and enriched perspective into the other. As a scientist, Arnoldi is trying to make sense of things in the natural world we do not understand. As an artist, she visualizes the inexplicable. Arnoldi says, “Both processes, science and art, are a form of exploration, at once (both) highly emotional and analytical, but always inquisitive. The methods might be different, but the goal is the same—seeking truth in the most authentic way I know how.” The images in Arnoldi’s paintings form a visual alphabet of her life. Like a dream that fades in wakefulness, her paintings stand on the precipice of consciousness. They walk the line between the abstract and the figurative, willing the psychological effects ambiguous of representation. Natalie Arnoldi was born in Venice, California in 1990. Her work has been included in

The Lords and the New Creatures, the inaugural exhibition of Nye + Brown, as well as Swell: Art 1950-2010 at Metro Pictures, Nyehaus and Friedrich Petzel Gallery in New York. She lives and works in Palo Alto, Venice and Malibu.
