Module Brief Title: Product, Range & Distribution
STUDIO BRIEF 1: Project Proposal Project Rationale What do you intend to do and why? I intent to develop a series of character, artefacts, and/or scenes, essentially world building, but based on an existing tale, story or mythology. I will explore character design and concept art, developing concept work for film and exploring new processes such as 3D sculpting and printing. Creating concept art and character design for film and video games is something that I’ve been interested in but haven't had as much as a chance to explore, this project will allow me to find out more about the processes & industry.
THEMES / SUBJECTS GENERAL THEMES: I will look at mythology and interpret the characters, artefacts and scenes from the said myths. SPECIFIC SUBJECTS: I intend on developing characters and a world in which they exist, using ancient greek mythology as inspiration. Specifically, I would like to look at the mythological wars the Titanomachy or the Gigantomachy. While ancient greek gods are quite extensively used as inspiration within illustration, I think that the wars are something that have not been depicted or re-imagined as much. I think that I would be able to approach them from a new angle and create something a bit more unique. PRACTICAL & CONCEPTUAL APPLICATION
SPECIFIC DISCIPLINARY AREA: I will be focusing on character and narrative, specifically thinking about character design and development. I’m thinking of developing characters for film, but also will consider merchandising and commercial viability. AUDIENCE/CONTEXTS: I imagine that the audience will be adults, however it could also include children, I think this will depend on the outcome and aesthetic that I choose. If I’m developing character concepts for film, then the audience could also potentially include film creators, other concept artists and 3D artists, art directors, etc. PRODUCTION/DISTRIBUTION METHODS: With developing characters for film, the end product would be a series of characters and representations of the world they exist in. This could be produced as a series of character sheets, or as an art book. I could also consider producing prints and am also interested in looking into 3D production (Vinyl toys, 3D printing, etc). CONTEXTUAL REFERENCES Identify areas of professional/creative practices that will inform the contextualization of the work that you produce. This should include specific illustrators, studios, practitioners and products as well as broader creative disciplines and methods of Production /Distribution. ILLUSTRATORS / DESIGNERS / STUDIOS: Peter Mohrbacher - Angelerium Chris Oatley Noah Bradley - The Sin of Man Industrial Light and Magic Weta Workshop Kidzilla KAWS Muttpop CREATIVE SKILLS
I intend to work primarily digitally, so I would like to refine those skills, but would also like to improve my drawing skills in general. As stated I would also like to begin exploring 3D making with digital sculpting and 3D printing. KEY TEXTS
