It Could Happen to YOU Name: Erik Luoma Major: Economics Degree: Bachelor of Arts Graduating: December 2010 Company: Altria Location: Wixom, MI Internship Position: Territory Sales Manager Intern
Why is an internship important? An internship is important because it allows you to professionally develop. You get hands-on experience in a position that could lead to a career option.
What was the most significant thing you gained from your experience? The most significant thing I gained from my experience with Altria was the ability to manage myself. I learned how to be a leader in the workplace and become my own leader by taking the initiative to be a responsible employee.
Describe your relationship with your mentor/supervisor? From day one I was assigned a mentor to teach me the in’s and out’s of the job. Whenever I had any questions, I could call and have my questions answered. I never felt like I couldn’t ask a question. Also, the District Manager and Section Directors took the time to sit down and talk with me to really see how I was progressing as an intern.
What was your biggest challenge? The biggest challenge for me was adjusting from school to a real working environment. There is a big difference from attending classes and doing homework to actually doing real work and projects.

Networking “When you see recruiters on campus, we are here for you. Come up to us, introduce yourself “”and get to know us. Also, I’d like to talk about social networking. I love it when students I meet “”find me on my LinkedIn page. I will not request to add you on Facebook, but it’s great when “”you find my company on Facebook or Twitter.” Email Etiquette “I don’t like when students use ‘hey’ as a greeting, a lot of exclamation points, or smiley faces in ”an email. Start the email with hello, make sure it’s short and concise, and end it with thank you “or sincerely.“ Reneging on an Offer “Employers give you 2 to 3 weeks to think about an offer, be sure to use that time. Once you “accept an offer, do not renege on the offer. It’s important that you show integrity by keeping “your word. It doesn’t look good to employers if you back out on your word.”
