IF YOU WERE WITH ME NOW
After the moderate success (compared to previous singles) of Kylie’s song « Word Is Out », PWL decided that she needed to return with a classier proposition and let’s say ‘conservative’. At first « Finer Feelings » had been chosen as the follow-up single, but it was pulled at the last moment in favour of « If You Were With Me Now » due to favourable reactions from radio stations. Released in the United Kingdom on 21st October 1991, this duet with American singer Keith Washington was Kylie’s first hit single to feature her as a co-writer and it was much better received than her previous release.
Focus • If You Were With Me Now OK, Kylie didn’t write the whole song herself, she co-wrote it, but it was the first time that she was credited as co-writer on one of her singles, which makes this particular song all the more notable.
Own » by Patti Labelle and Michael McDonald’s (number one in the US in 1986) also followed the same process.
Even though it was a shame that Kylie and Keith So, « If You Were with Me Now » is a song written couldn’t record together in the same studio on the by Stock, Waterman, Kylie and Keith Washington same day, as Kylie put it herself, it worked really who just happens to be singing this duet with her. well in a transatlantic way because the single is As you’ve already probably guessed, it was produced called « If You Were With Me Now » (if it had been by Stock & Waterman. As a reminder, the only duet called « By Your Side Right Now », it may not have Kylie had ever done (« Especially For You » with Jason worked so well, if you get the idea…). Donovan) had been released three years earlier. The single was released to coincide with the release of Kylie’s fourth studio album « Let’s Get To It » and her « Let’s Get To It Tour » (the album was released 7 days before the single, and the tour started just 4 days after!) At first the song was a solo demo called « One Love At A Time » and then it evolved into a duet, which was originally recorded with Kylie opposite a guide vocal from British virtuoso vocalist, actor and composer Cleveland WatKiss.
The song was then mixed by Phil Harding who made sure that it felt as though the performers were singing to each other. Pete Waterman then lined up a string arrangement on the track from the legendary Paul Riser. In October 2016 (to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the song) Mike Stock shared a story about this song on Facebook:
It was a big change of style for our Kylie: it’s a slow, romantic and melancholic ballad, and Kylie’s voice appears more mature than ever before. Even though you probably already know the story about the recording of this song, here are all the details ! The duet was recorded at the PWL studios in London and in New York studios, in July and August 1991. Unfortunately Kylie and Keith could not get together to record it: Kylie recorded her part of the song in London, and Keith’s part was recorded in New York. Kylie and Keith only met when filming the video. It was their « Ebony and Ivory » as Kylie said it herself, because that song was recorded separately as well. And in case you didn’t know it, the duet « On My
« After writing the song, Keith visited the Vineyard studios first to sing his part as Kylie was busy. I was piecing the song together in my head as we worked. A few days later Kylie came in to record her part. I had the arrangement organised with a guide string section to be recorded in New York with the amazing Motown Records musical arranger: Paul Riser. At which point I took a few days break, intending to finish the track when I returned with some embellishments, more percussive orchestration and cymbal swells. By the time I returned the track had already been mixed by Phil Harding, mastered and released! I saw Rob Dickins (Chairman of Warners – Keith’s label) at a Kylie concert at Docklands Arena in London, he came up to me and said what a great idea it was to team Kylie up with Keith Washington. « I thought it was your idea » I

said. So, I never knew how exactly that duet became to be! ».
In the end, it doesn’t really matter though, the fact is that Kylie and Keith sound particularly good together on this record, the vocals are emotional from both sides. Even though he wasn’t really an ‘obvious’ choice, the partnership worked really well. The fourway collaboration is spellbinding, the lyrics are heartbreaking, the ballad is gorgeous.
unknown outside of the USA to start with, he earned fans in the United Kingdom with his debut album, of whom Pete Waterman (who’s always loved soul and R&B) and Kylie.
Even though some people find the song slushy, I personally love it. Compared to most of the singles we had heard from Kylie at the time, this one really showcased her voice. In my (humble) opinion, this song would have been perfect for American soul/ R&B radios and it is a shame that it was overlooked in Kylie’s catalogue.
Before the actual recording of the song, Kylie couldn’t believe she would maybe work with Keith Washington when Pete Waterman mentioned his name for the first time. At the time, she listened to his album called « Make Time For Love » a lot, she said it was a beautiful album and that the fact of working with someone who is as respected as he was an It’s a bit of a shame that the only tour during which R&B singer in America got her quite worried. Focus • If You Were With Me Now Now, please can we just talk quickly about the cover art for this single? On the front, it looks like a tiny picture of Keith was thrown onto the main Kylie picture. I mean it looks like Keith is on a stamp in the top left-hand corner of the cover. And if we look at the back of the sleeve, the opposite happens, Keith is the star and Kylie is a stamp. It looks like a design afterthought. They didn’t even bother taking new pictures of them for this cover. Originally the photo of Keith that is used here was on the inner sleeve of his debut LP « Make Time For Love », where all lyrics were written down. It was also the actually cover picture of his audio cassette for the song of the same name.
home because it was her most personal thing. It was ‘her escape’. Other than that, if you read last month’s edition of our magazine, you’ll know that Kylie was frequently clubbing at the time and it’s funny because the first time William Baker saw her was in a club, with her boyfriend Zane O’Donnell around that time (that’s not when they started working together though). Also - and you can’t have missed this picture - around that time, she was spotted with Lenny Kravitz, so of course, the next day the media were all over them saying they were a couple! Kylie said « Ha! I looked quite smug in that photo didn’t I? No, I just met him a few times, and he’s a really nice guy so I enjoyed having my picture taken with him ».
The Kylie picture was part of a photoshoot that was done by Marc Lebon (pics below). Marc worked quite a lot with her at the time (you’ll find a special page with some of his pics a bit further in this article).
On a personal level, Kylie had now bought an apartment in London. When asked about her new The b-side to « If You Were With Me Now » home she was always very vague, saying that it made couldn’t have been more different from the single! sense for her to have an apartment there because It’s the brilliant « I Guess I Like It Like That », and it she’d been going there for long enough, that she has a story of its own… was much happier now that she had her own place, and that she had a good circle of friends. He created iconic promo videos for artists such as The Spice Girls, Joe Cocker, Kim Wilde, Take That and Celine Dion. Masuak also put his stamp on diverse brands such as, among others, Emporio Armani, Barclays, Levi’s, EasyJet and worked with actresses like Courtney Cox, Salma Hayek and Penelope Cruz. Based in both London and Los Angeles, Gregg continues to work across all these fields and more. Actually you’ll see his name again in future editions of The Kylie Times, because he also directed other Kylie’s videos: « Give Me Just A Little More Time », « What Kind Of Fool? (Heard All That Before) » and « Celebration ». This 90% black and white video tells the story of an actress caught between her own emotions and those of the character she’s playing. Kylie wears various outfits in it.
In the first scene she’s walking (outside a sort of factory and it’s very windy) and the camera is filming her from behind. She’s wearing a class white dress, quite short and she’s holding a little scarf in her hand. Then the camera faces her, and we can see behind her a lot of people looking at her and filming her, that’s when we understand she’s playing an actress that’s on the set of a film. Then we can see Keith singing very briefly, in front of a window. .
Then back to walking Kylie where she’s walking away from the people filming her, clearly trying to not show how sad and heartbroken she is. Then it’s intercut scenes between « woolly cardigan Kylie », Keith against a wall or a window singing his heart out, acting Kylie, « woolly Kylie »… (well you get the idea).
For the second verse, we see Kylie looking like she’s going to a masked ball, she’s got massive earrings, a lot of make-up and her hair is up. We only actually get a glimpse of her before she hides her face behind a typical Venetian mask (meanwhile Keith… well you know…).

Isa, March 2K19
Focus • If You Were With Me Now In the next scene, she appears in a wedding dress and is just breathtaking (and this time Keith is singing in front of a wall everybody!) and after that we see Kylie sitting at a terrace of a bar, on a chair that’s backwards, her hair is let down; she’s wearing a flower dress that’s short enough for us to see she has stockings underneath.
In the next scene we can guess she’s sitting in a train and for some reason she’s laughing, before going to the following scene where she’s with a male actor, who’s touching her face, she’s trying to be serious but ends up laughing again.
At the end, she’s lying on the floor with her flower dress and stockings, pretending to be at the beach when she’s actually lying in front of a screen where we can see the sea on it (I mean who would go to the beach with stockings?). And at the end, train scene again and this time she’s holding roses. After that - and it’s one of the only scenes where we see her in colour - we see her crying in a car, her head against the steering wheel, it’s raining like mad outside, and then we can see that it’s just people directing the movie she’s starring in holding a garden hose in front of the car.
It’s really strange because Kylie and Keith met at the video shoot, but we never see them together in it. Moreover, there are no obvious signs that the scenes were recorded at the same location. The only proof we have that they were both on the video set at the same time is this picture below.

CRITICS
INTERVIEW EXCERPTS
• The song was sometimes compared to a « Disney duet balladry ». • Digital Spy’s Nick Levine called the track a « slushy duet ». • One journalist wrote (really sorry lovers, I lost the source) :
About the Let’s Get To It Tour:
« Aaaaargh it’s a ballad! A drippy American sounding ballad! After the thundering thunderingness of some of her past singles and after the ‘subdued’ « Word Is Out », we get the ballading balladery of this thing. I give up ». • A journalist at The Juice wrote : « Kylie’s current offering is certainly a strange old affair. If you’ve heard the swoonsome tune then you may have thought the pair was crooning in the same studio but we can reveal they never met. Kylie recorded her slushy vocal bit in a London studio then a copy of the tape was personally whisked over to New York by Waterman for Keith to sing his own slushy bit ».
CHARTS Kylie was over the moon to be back in the Top 5 of the UK Charts! • UK : the single peaked at #4 and spent a total of 7 weeks in the charts. It was her strongest performance in the charts since the single « Step Back In Time » a year earlier. Peak positions in other countries : • Ireland : #7. • Australia : #23. • Belgium : #31 and it stayed in the charts for 4 weeks. • Netherlands : #56 and it stayed in the charts for 5 weeks. • Germany : #61 and it stayed in the charts for 8 weeks. However, while the song had certainly been made with a potential US release in mind, it would never be released stateside (actually it’s the case of the whole « Let’s Get To It » project).
« I saw some of the criticism, I did try and avoid it but then my inquisitive nature got the better of me and I had to see. But for me, I can’t let that be the judge of my show and for the people that went to the show (« Let’s Get To It Tour ») and enjoyed it, that’s what’s important to me ». « I would hope that people in general would know better than to believe everything they’re reading in the press. Of course the point of the press is to sell as many papers as they can and they have to be sensational and in the past few months I’ve had actually great press so it seems as though it’s about time, I mean I’ve been doing this job for years now and I know it does circulate. They love you, they hate you and then it’s time to like you again. They can’t seem to be saying the same thing all the time, and they love to contradict themselves so you know I am disappointed at the moment that I have to keep going on about this bad press I mean I’ve had it before and I will have it again ». « I’m a bit surprised that my outfits cause such a stir. I mean of course they’re meant to, it’s not a complete accident but yeah it’s caused a more stir than I had thought, but the reason I wanted to work with John Galliano is because he’s outrageous. He designed my outfits for the show ». « At first I was flattered to be compared to Madonna, but now I don’t want to be second to anybody, and I don’t think I am. And imagewise, what hasn’t Madonna done? ». About her change of image: « I’m confused, the press keeps saying ‘The New Kylie’ but I mean, is there another one because I’m getting confused as to which change they’re talking about at the moment… I’ve been constantly changing for the past 2 years ». « I think if I hadn’t changed at all they’d probably not be interested in me today anyway. If I was still doing exactly what I was doing 4 years ago, I would certainly be bored to tears. ».

Focus • If You Were With Me Now « I can only agree with people who say I’ve changed, it’s a change for the better I think and it’s a change that I wanted to happen because I wanted to have more involvement with the music and I’ve co written half of the album, I’ve been involved with the album every step of the way. In one way it drives me crazy because it’s a lot more work and much more pressure ».
« Well that’s a compliment (to compare her image with Brigitte Bardot’s). It’s very baby doll. I guess recently I’ve been working on a Barbarella type baby doll image so it’s a different album cover, it’s not something I would have done before but what we’re trying to do is a cover worth, get a photograph that kind of has a story and has people’s attention for more than one or two seconds rather than just saying oh it’s a nice photograph, people can make up their own story about the photo with the men in the background ». « People have different ideas of my image. Some people are still a couple of years behind and they are even more shocked to see the things I’m doing these days because they expect Charlene to come out or something. I would say I’m definitely not a complete sex siren or anything like that, I mean I do like to play with that part of my image but I’m still pretty much the way I’ve always been. I’m a very homy person ».
mean I slob around in my tracksuit pants and a t-shirt, watch the TV, talk to my girlfriend for hours on end when I’m feeling desperately homesick, I would go out for pizza, go to the movies… ».
« I’m still not satisfied, in fact I probably will never be satisfied, or if I am, that’s when I’ll stop. I just think that I’m now on the right course, heading in the right direction, so I want to get better at that and just make it more solid and permanent ».
*** DID YOU KNOW?/ MISCELLANEOUS Here’s a bit more information about Keith Washington: • He was born on 15th November 1960 and is an American R&B and soul vocalist. His most famous song is the hit single « Kissing You » which was released in 1991. Actually the song was used as Background music for the ABC TV soap opera « General Hospital », and it topped the Billboard Hot R&B/HipHop songs chart for one week. • He also had a few minor acting roles in series, of which « General Hospital » mentioned above as Keith Jasper. In 1993, Keith Washington released his follow-up album « Make It Easy », and after a lengthy absence, he came back in 1998 with the album « KW ».

• In 1992, the Sunday Mirror Magazine shared the knitting pattern for Kylie’s cardigan worn in the « If You Were With Me Now » video. Shame I didn’t see it at the time, or I would have tried at least …
• William Baker talked about that time in the Lalala Book: « Media interest by now was intense. Photographers stylists and fashion designers (like John Galliano, Rifat Ozbek, JP Gaultier, photographer Marc Le Bon and stylist Judy Blame), all of whom became integral to the peddling of the new cool Kylie. For the cover of The Face, Andrew MacPherson photographed her curling her glued-on lashes, with the headline ‘Kylie Remade’. Galliano later went on to design the costumes for her « Let’s Get To It Tour ». The tour attracted rather negative comments about its visual similarities to Madonna’s « Blonde Ambition Tour » a year earlier. Galliano had also invented the infamous fishnet bus conductor outfit, the first ensemble to reveal the now famous Minogue rear; he described the Minogue aesthetic as a ‘blend of Lolita and Barbarella’ ». • A little less than one month after this single came out, the VHS « Let’s Get To… The Videos » was released. It included four music videos from Kylie’s previous album « Rhythm of Love », two music videos from « Let’s Get to It », and exclusive behind the scenes footage (the footage was also included in Kylie’s « DVD Greatest Hits 87-97 »). 17 www.kylie-world.com

LYRICS Without you standing by my side Love and good fortune passes me by
How could we throw our love away? When we had so much more than words can say
And you were my guiding light It seemed so easy When we said goodbye
The darkest clouds would fade away To bring the light into my day If you were with me now
How different would the world be now If only we had worked it out somehow
If loving you is right Then turn back the hands of time I’d do anything to make you mine
What kind of fools are you and I? There would be stars up in the sky If you were with me now
There’s nothing that I wouldn’t do I could make you feel my love for you
And I know I may go astray But who’s to say that we can’t change our mind My love burns stronger each day If I’m sure of one thing One love at a time
If you were with me now If you were with me now If you were with me now

SYDNEY MARDI GRAS FROM 1994 T0 2019 KYLIE’s performances & appearances AT THE EVENT Will Kylie make an appearance at the Mardi Gras party? Will she not? Will anybody get to see her at all? These were the questions we were all asking a few days before Mardi Gras, an equivalent to the gay pride in Australia. Many social media rumors spoke of a private appearance in a club or a performance alongside Jake Shears. It was finally during the big parade in the city that Kylie appared - even though it was very short, it truly was a great surprise.
I
t was around 9 pm when Kylie appeared at the Taylor square, main point of the parade in a long golden dress by Ralph & Russo. Several drag queens with different costumes worn by Kylie during her career arrived (there was the jumpsuit of « Can’t Get You Out Of My Head », the « Spinning Around » golden pants, the « Showgirl » blue outfit...). A few second later, cowboy dancers wearing little red scarves and boots that appeared, holding up letters that formed the word « G-O-LD-E-N ». No doubt about it, something was going to happen about Kylie (yes, I’m a little Sherlock Holmes in my spare time). Everyone danced on excerpts from the singer’s greatest hits, including « On A Night Like This », « Spinning Around », « Can’t Get You Out Of My Head », « What Do
I Have To Do », « All The Lovers » and « Dancing ». Kylie spent all this medley (which last around 1m30) dancing next to her team members, Jake Shears and Courtney Act, and then she joined the drag queens at the end and took some pictures for the press. Her appearance did not last very long, however later on she continued with interviews for the press. One of the interviews was done in a small truck for SBS (which broadcasted the show). She said that she had come here many times and that her first performance was in 1994. She asked the presenter how Cher’s performance last year was and said she was very happy to be back in Australia to present her show. Kylie also took the time to stop for a little girl to give her a hug: how cute!

All these times Kylie sang for Mardi Gras in Sydney... As this appearance was quite calm and there is not much to say, let’s go back to the various performances of Kylie during the Sydney Mardi Gras. show with her. Two tracks have been performed: « Somewhere », a cover of Leonard Bernstein as introduction (we do not see Kylie at this time yet) and around 1’37 minute, two dancers with horns of devils appear and start dancing. Drag queens arrive on stage in sequined dresses, then Kylie arrives with a trident to perform « BetAs Kylie herself said in the inter- ter The Devil You Know ». Honestly, it reminds you so much of this incredible tour and if you check out the performance you’re going to have goosebumps because it’s so intense. She wore a pretty tribal outfit with a biiiiiig headdress on her head and it must have been heavy enough, but Kylie did not hesitate to move and dance and give us a fantastic medley of all her greatest hits. We had : « Wow », « In Your Eyes », « Love At First Sight », « I Believe In You », « Celebration », « Better The Devil You Know », « Slow », « Put Your Hands Up » and for the encore part the classics « The Loco-Motion » and « All The Lovers ». For the second act, Kylie appeared with a new outfit and tied hair. She finished the concert with her lioness mane and another outfit, which with the dim light suggests that she has no top on (it’s quite strange!). Do not hesitate to see (or review) this performance on Kylie’s YouTube channel because all the sequences of this medley are quite incredible and to concentrate as many hits in such a short time gives a fantastic show!

GOODBYE TO THE GOLDEN TOUR...
All things come to an end... Here we are now, writing the last part of our focus on the « Golden Tour », ending with Kylie’s home country : Australia. This last part will be quite brief because Kylie’s team decided to keep it the same as for the European dates, so there was no massive change to mention. The singer however sang in smaller arenas than usual (we were on a configuration more or less equal to the one we had in Europe) and performed as a part of the festival « A Day On The Green » for three exclusive dates. Let’s go back to these last shows, which conclude the « Golden Tour » - thankfully for us the Kylie Summer is coming very soon, so it is an ending, but we know something new is coming right up!

JAKE SHEARS We end this part with the best one (and god knows we were all jealous in England and Europe) the performance of Jake Shears. Do we even need to introduce him? Come on, let’s do a little summary. Kylie and Jake Shears have been friends for many years, she got to know him when he was a part of Scissors Sisters (formed in 2001) when they all co-wrote « I Believe In You » for the compilation « Ultimate Kylie ». Since then, the two friends have not let go. Kylie even joined the Scissors Sisters on stage at the Glastonbury Festival in 2010 where she performed « Any Which Way » alongside them. Jake Shears is currently launching himself as a solo artist.
05
It was in the singer’s kitchen, a few months earlier in London, that they decided to go on the road together for the Australian tour. Jake Shears was the last opening act before Kylie would come up on stage and his performance was about thirty minutes. Every night (because yes, it’s the only one of all the opening act to have made all the shows), he played eight tracks, with half that were songs from his previous band. He was accompanied by a group and set fire every night wearing a body ! It looked really cool and for once, even though we loved Sonic Yootha, having Jake Shears in Europe would have been great! Next time we hope!
THE MERCHANDISE
F
ew new things to note in the merchandise, the elements being generally the same as we had during the tour in England and Europe with a few pieces missing. Only novelty, t-shirts with dates: these were corrected (those of Belfast and Dublin added in December) and Australian dates were added. For your information, these t-shirts are not available yet on the Kylie store.

REVIEWS
#1 - SYDNEY news.com.au by Nick Bond For years, Kylie Minogue was locked in a fierce battle — with herself. Her singles topped the charts and her massive arena tours became ever more spectacular. By 2011’s Aphrodite: Les Folies, she was performing to fans from atop a giant Busby Berkeley-esque water fountain. This was pop music at its most OTT. But where on earth do you go from there? For a time, her returns diminished. Her struggle to stay ahead of the crowd perhaps reached its nadir with 2014 single Sexercize, its video showing a leotard-clad Minogue undulating on a fit ball while instructing her lover to “Beat all your best times / Let me see you sexercize / Come on, baby bounce, bounce.” Love At First Sight it was not. Clearly, something had to change. A few years later — and with a well-publicised breakup to fuel her creative juices — Kylie returned with her most personal (indeed, she co-wrote every song) album in years, last year’s chart topper Golden. And its accompanying tour is the first time (2012’s brief ‘Anti Tour’ aside) Aussie fans have seen her playing venues smaller than arenas in more than 20 years. This time around, she’s playing wineries and this, the first of two relatively intimate shows at Sydney’s ICC Theatre. Supporting her on tour is her good friend Jake Shears, mixing songs from his recent debut solo album with a smattering of Scissor Sisters’ most honky-tonk singles during a solid opening set. He dedicates final song I Don’t Feel Like Dancing to the lady we’re all there to see — or as he calls her, “the motherf**king queen of Australia.” It’s clear from the moment she steps on stage that tonight will be slightly different from the Kylie we’re used to seeing in recent years: Her costuming is more relaxed, the staging simpler. Rest assured though, it still frequently dazzles — Kylie clearly never met a glitter cannon she didn’t like. And she certainly knows what her core fanbase want from her current toe-dip into country music: cute cowboy-clad backup dancers, and lots of ‘em. The hits come thick and fast: Fan favourites Get Outta My Way, In Your Eyes and a towering Better The Devil You Know all have the audience up and dancing within the show’s first 20 minutes. And
while the songs on Golden may feature more acoustic guitar than we’re usually used to from Kylie, not everything’s been countrified — Devil is still performed in all its S/A/W synth-pop glory. One costume change later, and she’s back on stage in a very Saturday Night Fever white suit, delivering a yearning version of Confide In Me that somehow manages to ratchet up the song’s drama more than previously possible. Then comes one of the night’s odder moments, when Kylie strikes up a conversation with a woman in the front row — only to serenade her with the opening bars of her 1995 Nick Cave murder ballad duet Where The Wild Roses Grow. Your idol singing directly to you about getting your head smash in with a rock by Nick Cave? Better than a selfie, I guess. Golden’s sole electro anthem Lost Without You — a song Kylie revealed to news.com.au she had to ‘fight’ her record company to get on the album — feels 100feet tall on stage, delivering one of the night’s biggest ‘wow’ moments thanks to a perfectly-timed laser display. And best of all is the new life she breathes into some of her most inescapable hits via canny new arrangements: A beefier, guitar-led Can’t Get You Out Of My Head and a sweaty, sexed-up Slow, its sparse backing married to a mash-up of Human League’s synth classic Being Boiled. But sometimes you just have to give the punters what they want: Kylie delivers her treacly Jason Donovan duet Especially For You totally deadpan, encouraging fans to dance and sway their arms. The audience obliges, and suddenly, it’s the last song at a school disco in 1989. A man in the row in front of me sits in his partner’s lap: I half-expect an angry teacher with a torch to give them both detention. But that’s always been the beauty of Kylie; giving her fans what they want but never pandering. For the euphoric climax of All The Lovers, cannons fill the space with rainbow confetti, a post-Mardi Gras nod to the LGBTI community that’s second nature for a woman whose gay fans have never abandoned her through 30 years of ups and downs. Some 20 songs deep, she ramps up the energy further, channelling the late, great Donna Summer for a triumphant Studio 54-themed final act — complete with added ‘toot toot, beep beep’s during The Locomotion. She ends the night with Dancing, Golden’s deceptively simple lead single and a song that’s already be-

The show opens with title track Golden and Minogue, in a short and sparkly red caftan dress, enters stage left through rhinestoned doors to take her place among a posse of dancing cowboys and girls. Golden is her “Nashville” album, albeit more Dolly Parton than Garth Brooks, and the songs adhere to the principle tenets of country music: wear your heart on your fringed sleeve but serve it up with a brave smile. Having been through her fair share of well-documented heartbreaks, from caddish boyfriends to health scares, this is a curiously natural fit for Minogue. That said, this audience will love whatever she does and by the second song, everyone is on their feet bopping along to Get Outta My Way. Then we settle in for a rush through her jukebox of hits: Better the Devil You Know, Confide in Me and In Your Eyes to begin with. Being the pro that she is, she paces the show well – dropping in her Nick Cave collaboration Where the Wild Roses Grow, before Wow, Can’t Get you Out of My Head and a leather-bar version of Slow. A particular highlight is a romping-stomping version of Kids, her 2000 hit with Robbie Williams, and while her co-singer wasn’t in attendance, the crowd happily fills in for him. Minogue doesn’t shy away from her (dare we say) slightly cringeworthy early hits, and Especially for You, her duet with fellow Neighbours alumnus, Jason Donovan, stirs up the nostalgic crowd. I last saw Minogue in 2006 on her Showgirl: Homecoming Tour, the year after she’d been diagnosed with and undergone treatment for breast cancer. Of course she’s back for an encore – this time a sparkly blue short playsuit and thigh-high boots – with Love at First Sight. Then, after she bids the crowd a very heartfelt farewell, she closes the show with her latest hit Dancing. With its irresistible chorus of “When I go out, I wanna go out dancing”, I’m betting this will be her closer for years to come. After yet another storm of confetti, she finishes up at 11pm on the nose, stopping for just a minute to surf the waves of adulation. Then she disappears through the rhinestoned doors, leaving her adoring fans to head out into the dark night, humming along to one of her many hits and sprinkled with a final dusting of Kylie glitter. #3 - PERTH The West Australian by Simon Collis On a night like this, it’s impossible, princess, to fault an artist who has forged a brilliant career despite being written off as a bubblegum pop act. One whom doesn’t gild the lily, playing the daggy early hits with as much conviction as the new stuff. Even the clouds decided not to rain too hard on the pop parade that was Kylie Minogue’s first ever headlining outdoor concert in this country for 10,000 fans who danced, cheered, sang and worshipped at the altar of Australia’s so-called pop princess. (She’s been waiting almost as long to ascend to queen status as Prince Charles has been hanging out to be king.) The triumphant performance from the 50-year-old Melbourne-raised icon was the third on the Aussie leg of her Golden world tour, named after the chart-topping album. The star did them all a favour by teaming with her muscular band to present a show blending the best of Golden with a supremely confident sashay through 31 years of pop hits.
Of course, being armed with a golden microphone helps. Minogue doesn’t fiddle with the books, facing up to her early Stock Aitken Waterman material with a medley culminating with immeasurably daggy Jason Donovan duet Especially For You. The Perth fans at a soggy South Perth foreshore were likewise not too proud to sing along with considerable gusto. Earlier, after her bootscooting cowboy dancers got the night started with Golden and the full throttle pop of Get Outta My Way, Minogue unleashed the first big hit – Better the Devil You Know. “Traditionally, you guys sing this one for me,” she said. “Should we see how Perth does it?” We did pretty well, as the first stanza of five, dubbed Desert Sunrise, peaked and then rode into the sunset with In Your Eyes and revealing, autobiographical new song A Lifetime to Repair. After old mate Kyles belted out Blue Velvet on the big screen, the real deal returned to get seriously sultry for Confide in Me under a single red light. She never got close to the soaring notes but she sold the 1994 single with typical aplomb. A rare disappointment came with a snippet of Nick Cave duet Where the Wild Roses Grow with a crowd member, before a new song for her dad, Shelby ’68, and the average Wow added up to a disappointing midpoint of an otherwise stellar show.

The wow factor was ratcheted up for arguably her biggest international hit, Can’t Get You Out of My Head, which was beefed up by Minogue’s rocking band and segued into Fleetwood Mac’s The Chain. At the finale of this segment, one of the dancers slung a white leather jacket over the diminutive demigod’s shoulders: the back read “PERTH GOLDEN”. Each act mixed a hit or two with new songs. The saucy, simmering rendition of Slow and the party tune Kids roiled with 2007 rarity The One and Stop Me From Falling in the third section, which saw Minogue clad in leather. She tied a sparkling red and black flannel shirt around her waist for the fourth act, which included Especially For You and climaxed with a delirious singalong to All the Lovers. Somehow the ARIA Hall of Fame found another gear for the fifth and final act, which had a Studio 54 disco theme. Lasers blasted during On a Night Like This, while Minogue appeared to be digging Spinning Around as much as the fans. Her debut single Locomotion, once verboten but now an integral part of any concert, was expertly melded with Donna Summer’s Bad Girls. That disco classic, of course, was produced by Italo-disco legend Giorgio Moroder, who supported Kylie on her previous tour in 2015. This time the star was backed by Brisbane solo act Hatchie and Ansett Airlines-loving kitsch pop group Client Liaison, before Minogue’s good friend and Scissor Sisters’ frontman Jake Shears dished up his old bands hits, including Laura and Take Your Mama, alongside solo material such as opener Good Friends and facial-hair inspired Big Bushy Mustache. Shears finished his performance in fishnets and a shiny leotard, while describing the headliner as “the magic sparkle lady herself” before busting out the ironically danceable I Don’t Feel Like Dancin’. “There’s a part of me who is still a teenager in my bedroom,” Minogue announced as the encore kicked off with a high-energy rave through the blissed-out Love at First Sight, one of her strongest songs. Even fans amongst the trees at the back of the venue boogied to Dancing, the lead single from Golden and the obvious finale to arguably the best Kylie Minogue concert Kylie Minogue has performed in Perth. And that’s saying something given previous concerts have involved floating mirror-ball skulls, giant water fountains and the superstar flying around arenas on winged dancers. But there was something really special about this
show, which used a talented but not bloated band to shoehorn 23 of her best songs, five outfit changes and 10,000 fans into a night of pop bliss. #5 - MELBOURNE theage.com.au by Hannah Francis Jake Shears, of Scissor Sisters fame, gave an ironic introduction to the headline act when he closed with I Don’t Feel Like Dancin’. If the delivery lacked the exuberance (and falsetto) of the Sisters, our very own dance queen was about to bring that in spades. With a career spanning 14 studio albums there’s one thing Kylie always comes back to: when she goes out, she wants to go out Dancing. Yep, you’ll find her Spinning Around in gold hot pants - she can even do the Locomotion. Like Madonna, first-name Kylie (don’t you even think about it, Jenner) frequently reinvents her image and sound to stay relevant. After ‘80s Kylie there was Indie Kylie (sadly, she barely made a peep on this night) and then onto the noughties and Showgirl Kylie. Golden Kylie is not too far evolved from that. Sporting smooth, golden locks, she’s a mature sex bomb: refined but with whispers of retro, she gets around in slinky sequined shifts or, if the feeling takes her, rock’n’roll leather - Grease-style. Like plenty of other critics I’m not enamoured with this album, particularly when it devolves into the worst faux-folk-pop of the past decade, with its overabundance of major chords and layered hillbilly instrumentation. But we are against the tide. Last year’s Golden went to number one both here and in Kylie’s adopted Britain, and there was just so much affection for Our Kylie in the Bowl, it was hard not to get swept up in it all. Honestly, she could have mimed the whole thing and we still would have yelled “We love you Kylie!” every five seconds. (It’s a good thing she didn’t; her voice is just as good as it’s ever been.) It wouldn’t be a Kylie show without a dance troupe and the Golden girls and boys were a delightfully ragtag bunch, with ever-rotating costumes ranging from cowboy/cattle hand to boho to disco to something verging on pyjamas. They were endlessly amusing, often confusing, and their stamina was courageous. The showers of glitter and confetti, the flashes of Studio 54, the big-screen video clips of Kylie driving down a desert highway - all the elements were there, but it didn’t quite gel together, let alone fit comfortably on the stage. The Bowl is a tricky space and its limitations were felt; one wonders why Kylie didn’t

Fans Experience • Golden Tour Australia
fans experience THey met kylie
Two fans of the singer had the chance to meet her during her tour in Australia, at two different places and with two different stories. Here is a little focus on their background and the meeting with the pop star herself !
TERENCE - PERTH The first fan we will mention is Terence, 44yo, who lives in Perth. And the least we can say is that Terence is a die hard one! Indeed, the man spent more than $ 200,000 on Kylie’s concerts and merchandising. This dad of a girl has also two tattoos dedicated to Kylie and tried to name his daughter Kylie, but his wife said no to that and they decided to call her Keira (with a K of course !). He explained that he became a fan of Kylie when he saw her in Neighbours. « She was beautiful but she was the girl next door, she was somebody you could meet and fall for very

easily ». Terence’s wife quickly realized that Kylie was the first love of his life. At the Perth concert, her and her daughter were in the back of the place while her husband had chosen the most expensive seats - the front row. Thanks to Today Tonight, Terence was able to meet Kylie before the show. A short video for the TV was filmed. We can see him very moved and very proud to show the room where he exhibits his entire collection. Kylie signed his arm, which Terence got tattooed! A sweet story ! the months, the young man managed to lose half of his weight. Meanwhile though, Jayden was facing more bullying, now in his workplace. As a teacher in a maximum security facility for young people, he was subject to homophobic verbal abuse and bullying by both the students and staff. But he decided to tackle the bullies head-on – and show a video of him dancing in heels to Kylie at the end of year assembly… And he was shocked by the audience’s response: « To have those people turn around – we are so proud of you and well done on everything you’ve done. It blew my mind. You can talk about change, you can talk about diversity, you can talk about empathy for other people and difference in our society, but to see it modelled, unreal ». When he saw that there was a contest to meet Kylie, Jayden did not hesitate to participate. His videos of him dancing and his weight loss made him stand out and he finally got to meet Kylie. He was able to tell his story and do a few dance steps alongside the singer. He says, « I’ve never been happier and more content. And confident in myself, and to go from a period of time where I wanted to be anything but me. There is only one Jayden Norsworthy and I couldn’t be happier that it’s me. And that is the greatest feeling of all ».
We will now talk about Jayden, a young man who was followed by Channel 10 on their show you’ve probably already heard about, The Project. Twenty-sixyear-old Jayden has been a fan of Kylie since he was young. He started dancing very early and always liked it. « I started with the Spice Girls originally, but when they broke up, there was obviously a space there, a massive hole in my life which needed to be filled and there was Kylie. She appeared out of the mist and… yeah, the rest was history ». But growing up, Jayden, a little overweight, decided to stop dancing and lip-syncing the songs, feeling self-conscious and subjected to high school bullying. « I was the biggest kid in my year level, I was very flamboyant and liked feminine things, I didn’t fit into that boy mould ». At 18yo, Jayden went through a dark period in his life and reached the weight of 130 kg. He tried to follow programs to lose weight, without success. But when he saw Kylie’s « Get Outta My Way » video, it inspired him and gave him the motivation to change his own life. « I saw the video and I was like, why don’t I go back to what I was doing as a 6-year-old and dancing, not necessarily to lose weight but for the fun of it, and see whether I can amp it up a bit ». Jayden started with just 20 minutes a day of dan- Jayden’s interview and meeting with Kylie can be found on cing, before training a bit more and spending more YouTube! than 90 minutes a day dancing to Kylie’s music. a new album for jack savoretti
urrently promoting the release of his album « Singing To Strangers », Jack Savoretti gave several interviews to various media and many questions about his duet with Kylie were asked. Let’s talk about the website Official Charts where we can find out that at the beginning, the duo was supposed to record a cover: « We were going to cover Boney M’s « Rivers Of Babylon » but we both realised we weren’t brave enough to do it. I remember she turned to me and said, ‘do you want to do this?’, and I was like, ‘I’ll do it if you do it!’ and she wasn’t sure, so we tried something new on our own. She was in full on writing mode, and she was in a deep place. I was fortunate enough to work with her at a time when she was feeling reflective. I wanted to tap into that amazing strength she has, which I don’t think I appreciated until I met her. She has this incredible power – she’s a real force of nature ». For your information, this duet with Kylie is available on Jack’s album.
hile in Melbourne as part of her tour in Australia, Kylie visited the Pellegrini espresso bar on Bourke Street to pay tribute to Sisto Malaspina, the co-owner of the place where he was killed following a terrorist attack that took place on November 10th in Melbourne. Kylie came to greet Nino Pangrazio, the other co-owner and took a photo with him. She gave him all her support and had lunch there. If you are going to Melbourne, do not hesitate to go to this place to support Nino!

wo twin sisters, 8-year-old Lauren and Sophie Cripps from Thatcham, Berkshire, England had sung the track of Kylie, « Dancing », a day before the death of their mother, Alex, who did not survive to a brain tumor after a five-year battle against the disease. The video was shared by Lee on his Twitter and Facebook with the caption: « Our girls singing to their mummy, the day before she died. Alex died on 10th Jan 2019 ». He added that he really wanted Kylie to see this video, so that she can see what her music means for their family, and that he would like his daughters to meet her. The video was viewed more than 3,700 times in less than 24 hours and Kylie responded by saying, « Lee, thank you for sharing this tender moment of your girls singing to Alex. I’m so touched and so very sorry for your loss. Sending you and your girls lots of love ». Over £ 20,000 has been raised in honor of Alex for the Brain Tumor Charity since she was diagnosed in 2014. 41 www.kylie-world.com

KYLIE MEETS CHALLENGE CHILDREN’S

ast month we told you about the Challenge association which thanked Kylie in an article on their website for her commitment and support in the fight against cancer, especially among children. And the singer took the time to meet behind the scenes some of the children who admires her for her talent and her character. As the association has said, a quick chat, a hug or a photo do not seem to be a huge gesture, but for these children, it is very important. We let you watch these few pictures that speak for themselves!

kylie in GLASTONBURY DRAMAS have started
I
t didn’t take much for the first dramas about Kylie’s performance at Glastonbury to start... Fortunately, Kylie has nothing to do with it, but here are two news that have came out and you can’t miss them! The first one, the announcement of Janet Jackson (and first names) with the publication of the poster of the festival. And we could play a game to find the mistakes between the original and the one of Janet because she did not bother and she chose (or rather her team) to photoshop the poster to be the first name in the list... Yes yes yes... So, it gave the idea to some fans of Kylie to take her name, and to display it in big. We rather agree with this solution!
Official poster
Janet Jackson’s poster Kylie’s fans poster
Second drama, which is related to this first, is the one created by the American host Wendy Williams. She chose to mention the fact that Janet Jackson has photoshopped the festival poster, before adding that she did not know what Kylie JENNER was going to do on stage and that she knew she did not know how to sing, but she was going to do what she knows to do the best... Sometimes I tell myself that it’s good to just see « Kylie » on a poster but when I hear that, I prefer to see « Kylie Minogue »... 43 www.kylie-world.com

Kylie in the press • March
A Kylie Minogue concert is a religious experience that everybody should have at least once in their life timeout.com She is, as Rufus Wainwright once famously said, the « gay shorthand for joy ». But listening to one of her albums only gives you the faintest taste of the full explosion of joy that is seeing Kylie live. At the ICC Sydney Theatre on March 5 (the opening night of the Australian leg of her Golden tour), Kylie proved that she’s at the absolute top of her game as a live performer. At 50 years old, she has the kind of ease on stage and instincts that only come from a lifetime spent as a showgirl, bringing endless joy into the lives of her fans. Here are the five undeniable truths that we came away with. By Ben Meutze
Kylie Minogue taught all of Aus- who’s gently updated her hits to make them zing on stage in 2019. He’s previously been responsible for tralia about good drag Every time she’s on stage, Kylie plays with her own femininity and brings a wardrobe that’d make any self-respecting drag queen green with envy. This isn’t the draggiest – or most feathery – of her tour wardrobes, but every costume is utterly gorgeous, sleek and has some sparkle. Even a flannelette shirt tied around her waist is covered in diamantes. It’s all in reference to her latest album, the country-inspired, Dolly Parton-esque Golden. But Kylie’s drag is about more than the frocks – you can read her body language. The subtle head tilt, the gentle swivel of the hips, the placement of a little finger. It’s all artifice and role play, but it feels completely real. Kylie apparently once said, « I don’t have to try to be a sex bomb. I am one ». Nobody who’s seen her live could deny that.
some stunning reimaginations of her catalogue (remember when she did a big band version of ‘Better the Devil You Know’ back in 2001?) and for the Golden tour mashes together ‘Can’t Get You Out of My Head’ with Fleetwood Mac’s ‘The Chain’. It works gorgeously. There’s also a Donna Summer-inspired take on ‘The Locomotion’, a version of ‘Confide in Me’ that builds from an intimate confession to a screaming climax, and a fairly faithful version of ‘Better the Devil You Know’ (with added guitar and cowboy hats because Golden is Kylie’s country moment). Best of all? Whether she’s sick of them or not, Kylie performed every song on opening night like it was her absolute fave. You probably associate a lot of these songs with a particular moment in your life, and Kylie is always willing to recapture that moment for you.
All the classics are there – but She manages to make a meticushe performs them like she wrote lously crafted show look spontaneous them last week One of the strengths of Kylie’s tours has always been her work with musical director Steve Anderson,

kylie minogue sure is lucky in property realestate.com.au Kylie Minogue is currently on tour in Australia and while she lives luxuriously as an expat in London, she still has homely ties to Melbourne. By Emily Hutchinson Originally from Melbourne, the singer grew up in a four-bedroom home in Camberwell with her sister and fellow entertainer, Dannii Minogue, her brother Brendan and her parents. The four-bedroom Victorian terrace close to Camberwell Junction sold in 2016 for $1,740,000. Kylie moved on to buying her own property after finding success on Neighbours. She nabbed a home on Cambridge Street, Armadale for $185,000 in 1990. The street consists of 32 standalone homes, and her two-bedroom terrace is very similar to 27 Cambridge Street, which sold in 2017 for $2,175,000. She reportedly leases her terrace out, but whenever she gets around to selling it, the recent sale of her neighbour’s property suggests she’ll make a healthy return on investment. Across town, in the ritzy suburb of Canterbury, Kylie bought her parents their current home on renowned Monomeath Avenue. In 2002, she paid $2.43 million for the 2500 sqm
home, which includes a pool and designer kitchen. The majority of her properties, however, are in London, where she lives in a $25 million apartment, in the lavish One Hyde Park development. Other celebrities including Naomi Campbell and Holly Valance have also been neighbours in the complex, which is widely regarded as the world’s most expensive apartment block. The pop princess also previously owned a house on French Island in Westernport Bay, one of only two located on the island, which is accessible via helicopter or boat. Kylie also admitted to buying a lavish house in Los Angeles in 1999, which she only slept in a few nights before selling it on, as she wasn’t spending as much time there as she anticipated. There was also her rumoured home in Tossa De Mar in Spain, which she bought for $839,000 to be closer to her then boyfriend, Andres Velencoso Segura.
