ABOUT KYLIE’S SUMMER SHOWS

I stopped signing my name as Kylie Minogue a long time ago. It’s probably illegible anyway. I mean, I’d sign cheques and have to mentally not put a kiss at the end of it. It’s time efficient. Kylie Minogue

1994

In an interview for The Face magazine, the singer talked about the recording of her album with deConstruction and confirmed that she would collaborate with Brothers In Rhythm, Jimmy Harry, M People and Pet Shop Boys, who wrote a song especially for her. It was called « Falling ». After having spotted her on the cover of Who Magazine in Australia, Kylie is contacted by Steven De Souza, a director, who wants the singer to have one of the main roles in his new movie, « Streetfighter ». It is a production of more than 40 million dollars with Jean-Claude Van Damme and based on the video game of the same name. Filming takes place in Thailand and Australia. Kylie has to learn kickboxing and shoot with a bazooka. Everyone was impressed because when she was shooting, she did not blink.

After spending the previous 18 months in the studio recording her second album under deConstruction with the help of Brothers In Rhythm, Dave Ball, Ingo Vauk and Manic Street Preachers, Kylie brought the final touches and decided to call the opus « Impossible Princess ». It was her boyfriend of the time, Stephane Sednaoui, who was chosen to do the visuals of this era. Sky magazine names Kylie and pop artist Louise « Babes Of The Decade » in their edition celebrating their 10th anniversary and featuring a photoshoot and an exclusive interview. Anton Corbjin photographs Kylie for a short article in Elle magazine.

Here are the words of Kylie regarding this choice: « I took my time in choosing a new label and I am very excited about signing to Parlophone. There is much I hope to achieve

with my next album and I believe that anything is possible with this new partnership. I have learnt a lot in the last couple of years and I am very enthusiastic to make a record that is ‘Kylie’ ». June 19th : « Spinning Around » is released as a single in England and Australia and ranks first place in both countries, making the singer one of two artists (the other being Madonna), to have had a single that has ranked number one every decade. The singer was doing a lot of promotion at that time for « Spinning Around » and was photographed by Terry Richardson for the cover of GQ magazine which was quite controversial. The photographer wanted to recreate the poster of a tennis player who raises her skirt to reveal her

What Kind Of Fool Heard All That Before As planned, Kylie and PWL ended their collaboration with a Greatest Hits Album in 1992 (the first Greatest Hits of a long series…) « What Kind Of Fool (Heard All That Before) » was released as this new album’s lead single, during the summer of the year 1992, on August 10th. The song was written by Mike Stock, Pete Waterman and Kylie herself - making it Kylie’s second hit single to feature her as a co-writer (after « If You Were With Me Now »), produced by Stock and Waterman and recorded in PWL’s London Studios. The Greatest Hits album was released just four days later, on 14th August!

Focus • What Kind Of Fool (Heard All That Before) In 1992, after the release of « Finer Feelings », Kylie was more than ever eager to exit the Stock Aitken Waterman hit factory. The Hit Factory/Kylie relationship was no longer satisfying for neither of the parties, so they parted ways. « I think they lost the plot for a while and I told them that » Kylie revealed.

As Kylie co-wrote this track, we can’t help but wonder what part(s) she came up with « You’re so sure that I can’t refuse it, but don’t you speak too soon » for example could be a cheeky dig at SAW. Guess we’ll never know…

« I particularly didn’t like « What Kind Of Fool » though I don’t know if it was the song or my relationship with PWL at the time ».

« Four years ago, when they were really big, they had new sounds and were ahead of their time. They’ve been doing so many songs and I don’t know how long they can keep doing it well. People get jaded ». But to ‘round off’ her time with them, PWL released her final album on the label: “Kylie’s Greatest Hits”. The album and its accompanying Greatest Video Hits VHS placed Kylie back on top of the British Charts once again.

In 2008 : « What Kind Of Fool (Heard All That Before) » would be the last original single to be released from the PWL label, because her next and last single with them, « Celebration », was a cover. ***

Anyway, back in June 1992, Kylie returned to PWL to co-write and record 2 new songs with Stock and Waterman for this album. By now, it was confirmed and clear for everyone that it would be her final recording session for the label. Those two tracks were « What Kind Of Fool (Heard All That Before » and « Where In The World? ».

« There’s plenty of songs I’ve cringed about… I really didn’t like « What Kind of Fool ». But I realized you can run, but you can’t hide, so I embraced « I Should Be So Lucky » and the rest of them ».

« What ah-ah, what what what ah-ah », admit it, you just can’t get this song out of your head once you’ve listened to it! Most fans consider « What Kind Of Fool » as a timeless classic - and also as one of Kylie’s most underrated singles. Funny thing is Kylie admitted many times that she didn’t like this song, until she more or less admitted she had changed her mind in 2008.

« One song that I wasn’t very keen on at the time was « What Kind Of Fool », but the ironic thing is that I quite like it now. At the time I was trying desperately to run away from that kind of creation, of what SAW was because of where my head was at. I would grimace about it for years but actually now I think it’s really quite good. I like it ». The “issue” with this single was that many people considered it like a step backwards (some even said it as a misstep). Where were the grownup and more serious sounds of tracks such as « Finer Feelings » and “Word Is Out”? How could this song be released after hits such as “Shocked” and “What Do I Have To Do”? This song had nothing to do with Kylie’s “Rhythm Of Love” and “Let’s Get To It” tracks, it sounds like a throwback to an old album, Feelings”...

Quite ironically, these made a fitting farewell, both lyrically and stylistically, with both songs focusing on the end of relationships from the point of view of the lover leaving and the lover left, respectively. Taken together they could be interpreted as an ironic commentary on Kylie’s departure from PWL.

Focus • What Kind Of Fool (Heard All That Before) such as « Finer Feelings » and « Word Is Out » ? How could this song be released after hits such as « Shocked » and « What Do I Have To Do » ? This song had nothing to do with Kylie’s « Rhythm Of Love » and « Let’s Get To It » tracks, it sounds like a throwback to an old album, like if it had been recorded during the summer of 1989, just before or after « Wouldn’t Change A Thing » for example. Yep, Kylie was back to a more pop-oriented sound, the words easily make us think of Kylie’s “unlucky in love” lyrics of her 80’s songs, but what it is in reality is a tongue-in-cheek tribute to her earlier PWL music and it fitted perfectly into the Greatest Hits album. Kylie said it herself actually :

« I guess before this single I was moving along a certain direction and this has taken a side step, it’s not, by no means a step forward but it’s in keeping with the Greatest Hits feel and as far as the Greatest Hits is concerned, I think it’s great to have a nicely rounded off end of an era ».

In December 2017, guyslikeu.com asked Pete Waterman « When she left PWL you gave her the retro sounding « What Kind Of Fool ». Was that revenge? », and he answered:

« There was no fall out, no animosity. I wish we had actually got rid of Kylie two years before, she was with us too long. She killed the goose that laid the golden eggs. She was too powerful, she took the creativity out of the team. We were so focused on her that we stopped looking after our other artists. You can’t blame her. She was making us all a fortune. She could call the shots. She was like David Beckham, with everyone running around after her! We should have said to Kylie, we need to find a new label for you. We’re not the label to do the best for you, you are too big for us. You need to be with a major record company that can give you the creativity and freedom ».

1992 was a relatively quiet year for Kylie, she stayed away from the spotlight and the press as much as possible. She did of course, the promo work for the releases for which she was contracted but nothing more, she wanted to enjoy a life free from as many work commitments as possible that year. Yep, she needed to get away from the pressure that had finally taken its toll on her. She’d had many records in a bit less than four years and had been under constant exposure all along, so of course she had suffered nervous exhaustion on several occasions.

***

« The clichés about the price of fame are true. I push myself to the limits and then I collapse ». Funny thing is though, this time it was her absence from public life that was all over the press! Papers were writing articles and rumours about what Kylie could possibly be up to, and when she reappeared on TV she was always asked questions like « Where have you been? » « What have you been up to? » « What are you hiding from? ». CHARTS • UK : It debuted at #16, managed to peak at #14 and stayed 5 weeks in the charts. Even though it failed to reach the Top 10, it continued Kylie’s impressive unbroken run of Top 20 singles. • OZ: It debuted #37, peaked at #17 and stayed 9 weeks in the charts. Considering that « Give Me Just A Little More Time » and « Finer Feelings » peaked respectively at N° 30 and 63, I think we can say this position isn’t bad at all. • Ireland: It peaked at #22 and fell off the charts after 2 weeks only. • Belgium: It peaked at #36 and stayed 4 weeks in the charts. • Germany : It only peaked at #81.

TV & LIVE PERFORMANCES Disappointingly, Kylie only performed « What Kind Of Fool » a few of times live and on TV: • On Top Of The Pops (UK) where she actually sings live for the first time on that TV show, with a headset microphone (just like the one she had on the « Let’s Get To It tour »). She is dancing and singing away, but to be honest the dance routine is a bit too much so she seems to be struggling a bit to breathe (let alone sing…).

The single is one of Kylie’s least performed singles on tour. In fact, we can’t even say she “performed” it, as she never sang it completely, EVER! Kylie if you’re reading this, you’ve got to do something about it!

CRITICS The reviews from music critics were rather mixed let’s say.

Short samples of the song were used for: • Showgirl: The Greatest Hits Tour, during the Smiley Kylie Medley. • Showgirl Homecoming Tour and For You For Me Tour, during the Everything Taboo Medley • Kylie also did impromptu performances of the chorus of the song on occasion during her Anti-Tour and during her Kiss Me Once Tour.

Most critics were saying that the song could have been recorded three years earlier, showing no sign of musical direction or development. Some even compared the song with « I Should Be So Lucky » and suggested it was really regressive and overproduced in comparison with Kylie’s more mature work from the previous two years. Smash Hits made a review of the song and said that the subtitle « Heard all that before » was a bit dangerous coming from PWL, as everyone was then saying all their songs sounded the same.

ON TOUR

• On Parallel 9 (UK), after the release of her Greatest Hits Album. • In August, Kylie performed « What Kind Of Fool » followed by « Shocked » at the Radio One Roadshow in Barry Island, Wales (lip synching this time).

LA VIDéo The video was filmed in London in July 1992, and was directed by Greg Masuak. You probably remember his name because he also directed the videos for « If You Were with Me Now » and « Give Me Just a Little More Time » (and he would also go on to directing the video for « Celebration »). 11 www.kylie-world.com

Isa, June 2K19

Focus • What Kind Of Fool (Heard All That Before) When interviewed about the video, Kylie would answer:

« I’d been wanting to see the film “And God Created Woman” for a long time and it’s often really hard to find old movies, but a friend gave me a copy and I fell in love with it. I had to make a video so I thought why not, let’s do it like that ». So, that’s where the idea for the video came from: the famous French drama film directed by Roger Vadim and starring Brigitte Bardot « Et Dieu Créa La Femme ». Though not Brigitte’s first film, it is widely recognized as the vehicle that launched her into the public spotlight and created her « sex kitten » persona, making her an overnight sensation. Talking about Brigitte Bardot, Kylie said :

« She created that strong persona and I’m taking that on for the video. It’s fun. No woman is a perfect woman but she comes the closest ».

But there is a second reference in the video and we can see it in the very first scene. Kylie is wearing heartshaped sunglasses and this is a nod to the film poster for Stanley Kubrick’s 1962 version of Lolita.

Then we can see that Kylie is lying on a blanket, looking like she is sunbathing in front of a white sheet, behind which a male actor is walking with a rose in his hand. The camera alternatively shows us Kylie in front of the sheet and the man behind the sheet and through the sheet we can see Kylie’s shade, playing around with her legs and rolling on the floor. Kylie is wearing a white and blue singlet. In these scenes, we can often see Kylie’s signature eyebrow look (the “Minogue eyebrow”).

When asked if she was trying to copy the French actress, Kylie answered :

dress. The man is painting her toenails (lol) and kissing her legs while she’s stretching her arms backwards, clearly showing she’s got the power over him (and that he can paint her nails all he wants, she just doesn’t care anymore)... This toenail painting scene is also inspired by the film Lolita as you can see in this pic.

After that, she’s on a bed (just like in the Lolita film too) and he’s kissing her back and arms while she looks at the camera singing, looking as bored and fed-up as she can be. It looks like they had an argument and he’s all over her, taking his shirt off too, well you know… and Kylie just doesn’t care at all. At some point he kisses her shoulder, and the strap falls down and she puts it back on again. We can then see them, well their shades, in front of the bedroom window. The man kisses Kylie again and she pushes him away before closing the blinds completely.

« It’s impossible for anyone to compare to her so I’d rather say I was inspired by her ». And it wouldn’t be the last time Kylie would get her inspiration from BB. In Vadim’s film, we have the same scene with Bardot, except that she is entirely nude.

The next few scenes take place in a bedroom. First Kylie is sat on a chair wearing a really colourful summer 12 www.kylie-world.com

Then during the bridge we can see Kylie in a blue plaid gingham dress and then in the colorful summer dress again, dancing suggestively and playfully under a moving and shaking lampshade (looks like someone grabbed a lampshade and had fun with it) and the effect is really cool, we can Isa, June 2K19

only catch glimpses of our Kylie and some parts of her body.

The video is really cool, iconic, playful, and full of references. I just love it.

said something about this one day.

DID YOU KNOW? MISCELLANEOUS • The picture used for the cover art of the physical releases was taken by Katerina Jebb (‘Kat’ for friends), during a holiday they took together early 1992.

Then suddenly, we can see she’s wearing a long split red skirt and a big black belt. She’s dancing on a table, teasing the man. She goes on her knees on the table and looks him straight in the eye when singing « What kind of fool do you take me for? » before lying on the table again, her face right under his. He looks at her like he’s going to eat her, but she’s looking angry and being playful at the same time (putting her feet on his shoulder while pretending to slap him). This scene is nearly identical to a scene in the « And God Created Woman » film.

Other pics from the K. Jebb photoshoot

On the Kylie Fashion book, the two friends talk about each other: • Kat on Kylie:

« Kylie is a born exhibitionist so it’s obviously a lot of fun to photograph her. We met for the first time when she came to visit me at home in Paris in 1991. We opened a bottle of champagne and became firm friends ». • Kylie on Kat:

• Once again, the single is not on the « Ultimate Kylie » compilation (just like all the singles from « Let’s Get To It »). When asked why all those singles were missing, Kylie mysteriously answered « For a good reason ». The single never appeared on any other Greatest Hits album until this year! Indeed, the single is in « Step Back In Time: The Definitive Collection ». #JusticeForWhatKindOfFool • In June 1992, Kylie was seen coming out of a London nightclub with Prince and of course, rumours about them being together were all over the press afterwards. Kylie once said :

« You know I can’t tell you everything about Prince and me. No, we haven’t kissed, there was some speculation but we just met a few times and talked about a few things and that’s all I can say at this point ».

« Kat and I did lots of shoots at her apartment. We had *** such freedom and always got into mischief ». • Even though Kylie was still under Kylie

Brigitte

Then she comes down from the table and just leaves the room, vaguely shaking her hand to say goodbye, leaving the man sat on the chair alone, who then puts his head on the table in despair.

• Quite surprisingly, the b-Side of the single is « Things Can Only Get Better », a track from the album « Rhythm Of Love ». I wonder why they didn’t select a more recent track as a B-Side (« Where In The World » for example). Could it be like a hidden message from Kylie: « Now that I’m leaving PWL, things can only get better? ». I’m sure someone must have 13 www.kylie-world.com

contract with PWL at the time, on several occasions in 1992 we were able to see that her campaign to “reinvent” herself (or, let’s say to continue growing-up outside of the bubblegum popstar image) had really begun. Here are just a couple of examples...

Focus • What Kind Of Fool (Heard All That Before) • In June 1992, Kylie was on the cover of Indie Music Magazine ‘Select’ with Bobbie Gillespie, the lead singer and founding member of the alternative rock band Primal Scream. The 7-page special inside is a transcription of a revealing conversation between Kylie and Bobby that took place in a bedroom of Kensington Gode Hotel in London. All the pictures which are inside the magazine were taken by Kat.

• In May 1992, Kylie made a noticeable appearance at the « Rhythm of Live » Fashion Charity Gala, at the Grosvenor House Hotel (London). The event was hosted by the ‘Rainforest Foundation’ campaigners Sting and his wife, Trudie Styler. Kylie performed Marilyn Monroe’s « My Heart Belongs to Daddy », wearing a super sexy white cotton singlet with paper trim and girdle skirt with chiffon strips, designed by John Galliano.

Bobby said :

« These are the best 2 things in British pop music: Primal Scream and Kylie Minogue ». The “conversation/ interview” has nothing to do with the ones we’d read of Kylie so far, it’s much deeper and more personal, and it’s super funny as well. A bit strange at times, but definitely different from what we’re used to reading…

INTERVIEW EXCERPTS FROM THAT TIME « When I write songs, I get inspiration from all over the place really. People imagine that you take it from books, films, magazines, which is true but I take inspiration from my friends as well ». « There are days where I desperately want to be like the person next to me and walk down the street, go to the market. I went to Camden Market once with my friends - they’re great, they get quite protective of me when we’re out - and there was a photographer there. Ugh! It was a cold and grey day, the last thing I wanted was to have my photo taken by a paparazzi at the market. They always say “Come on, darlin’, just one photo and we’ll leave you alone”. If I had 5p every time someone said that to me! ».

« I’m so bored with people saying I’m ripping Madonna off. I’m sick of everyone’s saying: So who’s Kylie going to rip off next? I’ve just had enough! People seem to think Madonna’s a first in everything. You really think she dreamt up her own image? No way! She’s copied everyone from Marilyn Monroe to Greta Garbo, I’m not saying that’s bad, we’re all influenced by people. Even Prince. Everyone says Lenny Kravitz is inventive, well if you don’t see Jimi Hendrix in there somewhere, I don’t know where you’ll find him. We all come from somewhere ».

« If I couldn’t be a popstar anymore, it would take me quite a while to adjust I think. I’d be able to live comfortably but if I could I’d buy a glorious house by the beach somewhere ».

14 www.kylie-world.com

« I often consider giving it all up. I’d like to study at university or maybe back-pack across Thailand. I went on holiday to Arizona recently and it blew my mind. I wasn’t hassled, people just left me alone. There are times when I hate what I do and everything surrounding what I do. I don’t like fame, recognition, the loss of a personal, private life. Sometimes I just want to be a normal person ».

« The thing that I hate the most is that people have a preconceived idea of who I am because of everything they read or hear about me ».

LYRICS What kind of fool do you take me for? (Do you take me for, do you take me for) (But I’ve heard all that before)

What kind of fool do you take me for? Don’t wanna see your face no more You can say you’ll be true, I can trust in you But I’ve heard all that before

I don’t wanna hear your reasons I’m not giving you another chance In my kindness you saw weakness Time for me to make a stand

What kind of fool do you take me for? No one on earth could give you more You would change white to black If I took you back But I’ve heard all that before

Whenever I hear your music Singing the same old tune You’re so sure that I can’t refuse it But don’t you speak too soon

What kind of fool, what kind of fool (Believed you x 4)

What kind of fool do you take me for? Don’t wanna see your face no more You can say you’ll be true I can trust in you But I’ve heard all that before

Whenever I hear your music Singing the same old tune You’re so sure that I can’t refuse it But don’t you speak too soon

Remember how I used to need you But baby you were never there There was a time when I believed you But now I know you didn’t care

What kind of fool do you take me for? Don’t want to see your face no more You can say you’ll be true, I can trust in you But I’ve heard all that before

Don’t wanna hear your hard-luck story It’s the same time after time It’s too late to say you’re sorry You’ll never change wrong to right

What kind of fool do you take me for? No one on earth could give you more You would change white to black If I took you back But I’ve heard all that before

Kylie in glastonbury

she did it ! Yes she did! Kylie Minogue sang in Glastonbury during the famous ÂŤ Legends Slot Âť for a crowd of more than 100,000 people who sang and danced with her. The singer, who had said that this date would be very emotional 14 years after having to cancel her performance due to breast cancer, managed not to cry even if the emotion was clearly there. Surprise guests, new costumes, a slightly reworked setlist... We watched this concert which was probably the most important one of her life.

Focus • Kylie in Glastonbury We all knew Glastonbury would probably be the most important concert in Kylie’s career, first of all because it’s Glastonbury and its legendary in itself, and also because her performance took place during the ‘Legends Slot’ (Reserved to only the very big artists, Dolly Parton being one of them…), and, of course because her performance had to be cancelled in 2005, this comeback had a special meaning for her. Kylie always said that it was life, that this occasion would maybe never happen again and that ‘that’s just the way it is’. However, the occasion did come on 30th June: she was going to sing for 75 minutes in front of an incredible crowd. In all the interviews, she had talked about her stress and her joy of being able to perform. But did she expect such a crowd and that she would have such a huge success? I don’t think so. If very few fans managed to get tickets, we all tried to watch the show live, even if for those abroad it was much more complicated than for UK residents. I even bought a VPN for the occasion which in the end didn’t work, but fortunately, my friend Sol found a link via a Russian website so I was able to follow the concert live. I was stressed

for her all day, I wondered if she had managed to sleep the day before (I would still like to know the answer to that actually!) and a few minutes before the concert I was even more stressed as if it was me who had to be on this stage. I had no idea what to expect from the crowd, I just saw some pictures at 11am where everything was empty and I guess no one could realize how many people could fill this space. 3:45 pm English time, my live starts. I see the crowd and it’s something I just don’t have the words for. It’s just CRAZY. The people in the front row (front row that is at least 5 meters away from the stage and 10 meters away from the main stage) were given super cute Kylie visors. But what we were all waiting for was to see Kylie’s reaction. In fact, I don’t even know how to explain it now. Her expression at that moment was everything. I wish I knew what went through her mind at that moment but I think it was something like ‘Here it is, I’m finally here, it’s the moment, let’s do it!’. It was just crazy and I can’t possibly imagine what it feels like for an artist to have such a huge crowd there just for you.

The singer came on stage with a new suit - actually it was a little shirt, a jacket and trousers - that I think are the same than the ones she had for the Golden Tour during the act with « Confide In Me ». For the second act, Kylie wore a long red leather jacket before unveiling a new dress created by Nick Cave’s wife... And speaking of Nick Cave, the first surprise of the concert was his presence to sing « Where The Wild Roses Grow » with Kylie. The audience were given 1500 red roses from Aleia Roses. Kylie approached LM Flower Fashion and made this special request because she wanted to realize a special moment with the roses during her performance of the song. For the third act, Kylie has the red jumpsuit seen in the previous days during the summer tour. The singer took a moment to thank the audience and explain her story: « The story is, that in 2005 I was meant to be here on this very stage and the circumstances meant that I didn’t make it, but I was watching from Australia. I wished things were different, but life is what it is, right? ». If Kylie was very emotional, she didn’t cry as some magazines said, and actually congratulations to her just for that (well after all it’s maybe true that we may have all cried for her at that moment). The singer wished to thank the band Coldplay who had covered her song « Can’t Get You Out Of My Head » while she was in Australia at that time and so offered us the second surprise, the invitation of Chris Martin on stage to play this song with her with his acoustic guitar (he sang some notes too but not many). Let’s talk now about the last act, with a dress that brought back many memories, the famous golden dress from the Golden Tour used for the act « Studio 54 ». Kylie was radiant in it. The confetti also made the trip to Glastonbury and on « Spinning Around », the last track of the setlist, some people, apparently members that were part of the Glastonbury organizers even tried to do a flashmob, but let’s be honest, it was funny but not that successful. People sometimes didn’t seem to know what they were doing. 21 www.kylie-world.com

Focus • Kylie in Glastonbury After the concert, Kylie gave the BBC a short interview. The host asked her how it went and the singer said she didn’t really know what had happened and that it was really an experience. You will find the complete setlist and reviews in our special « Kylie Summer » focus, but here is a small summary of what I thought about it. Personally, I really liked the fact that Kylie was so happy on stage and the fact we all kinda lived this moment live with her. It was really awesome and emotional. The costumes were good, the audience was great! I’m not going to lit though, I was a little disappointed that Kylie didn’t put on a specific show for that date, in the sense that even though she’s touring as part of the Kylie Summer, Glastonbury remains unique and is a huge highlight in an artist’s life I think - and I’d have liked a slightly different setlist, maybe more surprises and a show with a bigger production for that one day.

Nevertheless, Kylie really pleased the crowd, the fans and the press has only released great reviews about the concert! The next day, Kylie was on the front page of nine magazines in England! She played in front of a crowd of more than 100,000 people (some even speak of 150,000 people) which is a record for the singer and one of the biggest acts of the weekend for the festival. The live of her concert was broadcast at 6pm on BBC One (and apparently it was the first time in a decade that they broadcast a live from Glastonbury on the channel) and has accumulated more than three million viewers. And of course, we loved seeing people dressed like Kylie in her « Can’t Get You Out Of My Head » music video or with signs in her honor.

The Telegraph Big tunes, oodles of charm and the hard working attitude of an old fashioned showbiz trouper The Guardian Solid-gold set from a living legend Sky News Kylie may have broken record as vast crowd watches her emotional set Stylist The feminist significance of her “record-breaking” performance BBC Kylie Minogue’s tears of joy as she finally plays Glastonbury

One thing that shocked me after this concert is the hate she received on social networks, especially on Twitter. Many people said that she did not deserve her place, that she didn’t know how to sing, that she should have just stayed in Neighbours or that she was lip synching (better and better when the first comments is: « the sound is horrible » and the following one: « she is miming »...). Kylie did indeed sing live and about the sound, it is true that her microphone was very low and I heard the back vocalists more than her. After all, I don’t know if it was the same for everyone, but what is certain is that she sings live! I mean you can tell when looking at her and if you listen carefully that she sings live all the time… 22 www.kylie-world.com

Laeti, June 2K19

Many other tweets appeared on the account of BBC Radio One, which promoted the singer’s concert when we know very well that they do not play any of her tracks. We could see messages like: « It’s pretty ironic », « If you like her why don’t you play her? »... After the show, Kylie had a good time with her boyfriend Paul, watching the next act, Miley Cyrus. She was even seen dancing on Miley’s tracks and kissing Paul. This performance was a real boost for Kylie because her Greatest Hits took first place in the rankings and the singer should be at the top of the charts this week. In an interview with the well-known Musicweek magazine, Alistair Norbury, BMG’s repertoire and Marketing president, made the following statement:

« The fact that she’s got the [legends] slot at Glastonbury on the Sunday is a perfect opportunity. This is one of our tent pole releases for the year, and the Glastonbury slot couldn’t be a better way to kick off that campaign. This is the platform that everyone wants ». « That’s a perfect example of BMG working the frontline label – where we have Kylie signed – with our catalogue label, which has the PWL catalogue and the Deconstruction catalogue. So we’re able to put together the Kylie best of. While we have licensed in other material, the Parlophone repertoire, this is about catalogue and frontline working together – and publishing, too, because we publish on a lot of material on that album, either via Kylie or co-writers ». « We’ve got very high hopes and [the album] will go all the way through to Christmas. We have been working on this for a year. And there is a lot more to come ». We are looking forward to see what’s next! In any case, we hope that the Golden Tour will be released on DVD and that in the bonuses we can have the Kylie concert in Glastonbury... It would be so good right? 23 www.kylie-world.com

Kylie Summer kicks off!

Let’s go ! After the « Golden Tour », which traveled the roads of England, Ireland and Europe and Australia, Kylie is back with a new tour as part of the release of her best-of Step Back In Time with the Kylie Summer 2019. We know this title for a tour is not unknown to you since we already covered the event in 2015. It was also a tour with her greatest hits after her « Kiss Me Once Tour ». We jumped on the opportunity to offer you a complete focus on the first dates of this tour, from Hampton Court Palace to the Eden Project shows. We will discuss the other concerts in our next issue that will be released in early September.

egarding the tickets that were on sale, everything depended of the show. For London and Oxford, the shows took place in castles and the tickets were inevitably seated. Kylie’s last four concerts were all standing. As part of the Rock Werchter festival, Kylie played in a tent with a capacity of 20,000 people. Once it was full, it was no longer possible to get in, so you couldn’t walk in too late! For Glastonbury,

the stage

e don’t have much to tell you about that : Kylie’s team opted for an easy-to-adapt stage in all festivals, without catwalk. So we had the same stage that we could find on the European and Australian legs of « Golden Tour », even if it was totally flat

and had no particular scenery. The only thing to note is the fact that the stage is mobile and not fixed as were the studio 54 door and the small platform she was going down from on « Slow » and « Dancing » on her previous tour.

During the concert, some references are worth noting, although they are less numerous than those of the « Golden Tour ». As she enters the stage, Kylie arrives hidden in the set, just like her dancers, which reminded us of one of her performances on « Can’t Get You Out Of My Head » in 2001 at the MTV Europe Music Awards. The dancers were in these small boxes before going on the stage. We will say that it is a more modern version!

The Wild Rose is back. The staging was once again made by the very talented Rob Sinclair, who had already worked with Kylie on the « Golden Tour ».

On « Hand On Your Heart », Kylie dances with Yves, disguised as Klaus Nomi, icon of the new wave and synthpop scene of the early 1980s who appeared both as an outstanding opera singer and cabaret artist in the look unclassifiable.

Last point that we want to mention: the introduction before « Especially For You », where the dancers are doing a wedding scene... How not to think about the wedding scene between Jason and Charlene in Neighbours? 28 www.kylie-world.com

Kylie was about lightness, about transcending time’s limitations. That this was under threat in 2005 didn’t compute, to the degree that it felt like a national crisis in her adoptive home land.

Was there ever any doubt? Kylie Minogue absolutely delighted the Glastonbury festival with a set of streamlined pop as effervescent as her winning persona, as cheering as her gap toothed smiled. We should be so lucky … and indeed we were. She did the Locomotion, gamely trilling “Choo Choo” as her dancers made a train across the stage. She slow danced with fellow Australian Nick Cave during a campfire singalong of murder ballad Wild Rose. The sun beat down, flags were flying, and voices were raised in splendid singalong, la-la-las rising with near hymnal glory into a perfectly blue sky.

Yes, we all love Nick Cave’s poetic lyricism and were delighted to see him back on the Glastonbury stage. But, let’s face it, we all probably know more Kylie than Cave songs. All My Lovers and Kids inspired singalongs every bit as lusty as those heard at Liam Gallagher’s Oasis heavy anthem set on Saturday. Minogue was first meant to play the festival in 2005 but had to cancel when she was diagnosed with breast cancer (from which she made a full recovery). By the time she finally made it, she was in her fifties, old enough for the so called “legends” spot, previously occupied by stars such as Barry Gibb, Lionel Richie and Dolly Parton.

It was a set that almost felt like a reward for having hung in there so long, giving so much of herself to Kylie herself was - momentarily at least - reduced to the British public. The love and appreciation beaming tears, stumbling through a speech about “our story, down the hillside in Kylie’s direction was tangible, althis 30 years together.” Pop is supposed to be a fickle most a physical thing. Her lovely, field in Somerset, Kylie shimmied and sang, and all spirited Glastonbury set reminded us all why. was well in the world. In some ways Minogue might seem an odd pick for such a venerable music festival. She has never been an artist strong on that elusive quality of “credibility”. Rather she is something of a cheesy family favourite, admired as much for her plucky can-do attitude as her musical offerings. Her voice is not her particular strong point and was noticeably shaky at moments through the unforgiving Glastonbury PA. But she scores where it really matters: big tunes, oodles of charm and the hard working attitude of an old fashioned showbiz trouper. She sang her hits and a hip rock festival crowd sang them right back, demonstrating that she is more than just a guilty pleasure, she is actually a guilt-free pleasure. Once upon a time it might have been considered a bit uncool to admit liking Kylie’s often cheesy brand of mainstream commercial pop. These days, at Glastonbury at least, people are ready to celebrate the full range and diversity of their tastes. Her band mashed up the guitar riff of David Bowie’s Fashion with Minogue’s Slow, a pop rock blend that worked surprisingly well. Or should that be unsurprisingly? They may occupy different strata of pop culture but a good tune is a good tune whoever sings it.

Hampton Court Palace, June 20th During the Golden Tour, Kylie started announcing her summer tour, including a date at the Hampton Court Palace. And this show was on my birthday. During the previous Kylie Summer, I had the chance to do a concert on June 20th, my birthday, and I kept a great memory of it. How lucky I was to be able to spend my this day with my friends and my favorite singer. And most importantly, to have a ticket with the date of my birthday and Kylie’s name on it… If you’ve ever seen her on your special date, I think you know what it means, and it’s even better for me because I never celebrate it, so having a Kylie concert this day is a real deal. When they announced it, I looked at the price of the tickets and I quickly gave up, having already spent too much money on the Golden Tour. Especially since the tickets were seated, and there was really no point in being at the back of the venue... But it ended up being my mother, who surprised me and got a ticket in the second row so that I can celebrate my 27th birthday with a great view of Kylie. On June 20th, I was on my way to see Kylie in London, and to see my friends again. The advantage of seated concerts is that I had time to walk around in the city without necessarily having to queue to have a good spot... And to be honest, it’s really great! I joined my friends Jodie and Kirstie at the castle where we checked out the place... And it was amazing. We had to cross a small courtyard before discovering the place where the concert took place: it was a very small place where even if you were in the back, you had a pretty good spot. It was a bit shocking, especially because people at the front row could touch the stage. A bit like if Kylie was singing at your village party, you know. At this moment I understood why the tickets were sold-out so quickly, and believe me, the price was worth it. Once we walked by the courtyard, we were able to visit the gardens where merchandising and food awaited us. With my ticket, I was supposed to 44 www.kylie-world.com

get a free glass of champagne (£ 14 saving wooohoo) and I was able to celebrate my birthday in a rather nice way! I then met En and Ilse who arrived a little later, we saw Jenny, who was dancing for Kylie but who is not present on this tour and we talked a bit. And then came the time to go to our seats. And what a seat woooh! Adorable English people were next to me and celebrated my birthday with me (They maybe offered me too much champagne too tho). They sang the whole concert with me and it was pretty cool. Kylie arrived on stage radiant and I was so happy to see her again. The intro on « Love At First Sight » was a bit shocking, I did not expect it at all as first song. On a concert side, each costume was dazzling, the act three with « Slow » - I do not even want to talk about it too much SHE WAS SO SEXY GOSH (you lost me at that moment) and I loved the fact that she sang « Shocked » - I wasn’t ready for that either. At the end of the concert and after thinking about all the songs we had, even if I had a great time, I was a little disappointed with the setlist but at the same time it’s a Greatest Hits Tour, so I know it would be impossible to hear my favorite b-sides (bring it on another anti-tour), but I wish there was at least the lead single from the album, « New York City »... Anyway, my next stop was Belgium!

Rock Werchter, June 28th If you think that my previous storytime was boring, that’s the case. No drama happened, but there were some in Belgium (don’t expected something crazy). First of all, I was not supposed to do this concert. I had it in mind but having to queue all day to be in the front row while Kylie was on stage at 10:45 pm did not make me want to do it so much... I think I’m getting old but it’s more and more com45 www.kylie-world.com

plicated for me to wait all day without necessarily being able to go to the bathroom or eat or drink a bit to keep the spot. To be honest I need to be able to go to the toilets when I want and it’s the most important stuff for me (I pee all the time...). I booked my ticket last minute, just a week before. I booked a bus at the last minute either and I met my friend Anita there, who had booked a hotel. That’s what decided me to come, because I wanted to go back to Paris the same evening after the concert, but there was no bus to go back to Brussels and it was out of the question that I’d pay a hundred euros for a cab to get back to the center of the city (by the way I do not even know if there were any taxis to get back to Brussels at night...). So I woke up and left at 6am on Friday to take my bus at 7:25 am and be in Brussels by noon. Of course, my bus was late, and I left an hour later than the scheduled time so I was blocked in the trafic jam... We arrived at Charles De Gaulles airport where we had to make a stop where more people were getting in the bus, and the boarding security was there and to check our identity. It was supposed to take 10 min and took 45 minutes because of a boy who was making the round trip in the day without an identity card and with a suitcase, pretty suspicious. They asked me why I was going to Belgium, which I answered I was going to see Kylie Minogue... And I must admit that the only answer I had was « Oh » and that’s it. Sad story because they were all talking with the people who were going to see The Cure ugh. So the bus was two hours late and at 2 pm I arrived in Brussels, where Anita kindly came to pick me up at the bus stop. 30 minutes later, we were at our hotel and we got prepared for the concert, before leaving for a 45-minute drive. If you have never driven to Brussels, do not do it. It’s the worst city in the world for that and we have taken the wrong road at least 5 time and almost had an accident every time we had to turn right or left (plus I’m always confused with right or left so I let you imagine the drama). We decided to park at the farthest parking from the festival, thinking that there was not necessarily space further. It was 4 pm and we were still not inside, Ilse and En had kept our spot for 4 hours already so we chose the easiest way to get in asap. The only thing we did not really know was that we had to walk two kilometers to get to the festival ... Thank God, it was not too hot, so it was bearable. Once there, the first stop was made to pee (OF COURSE). We knew we were going to have to wait about 6 hours for Kylie, so we took our precautions immediately. We then bought some food (OH MY GOD - I had not eaten anything since the day before, it was so good!) - and we waited for the Barn’s doors (where Kylie was going to play) to open. I made a lot of festivals, 46 www.kylie-world.com

but in terms of organization this one is irreproachable. No queue for the toilet, no queue for food, when the Barn (it was like a big tent) is full it’s impossible to get in… We arrived in the middle of the act of Jungle, which was pretty cool and then met with En and Ilse to be... front row! People do not generally queue and enjoy the different shows, so after each act it’s easy enough to have a good spot. We watched the acts of Janelle Monae and Years And Years, both of them were pretty incredible, and then it was time to wait before seeing Kylie on stage. It was obviously the longest hour of the day because we were all looking forward to it. Everyone rushed to be in the front row after the Years And Years concert but thank god there were no dramas and the people who had been waiting a long time were in the front row. Also note that the people present were all respectful, no one was pushing before or during the concert (at least not me, En had a bit of a different experience with guys behind her who gave her about 0 space to even breathe even when asked super nicely, and then they complained her hair was touching their face. Lol.) and it was really nice. And the atmosphere, what to say… Well, all the kids who were here for Years And Years were gone, the audience was older, but everyone was singing - it was so good. When Kylie came on stage, her first words were: OH MY GOD. From where we were we did not see much, but the Barn was full and a crowd of 20,000 people (the equivalent of the O2 I think) was there for her. Kylie had a great time and we all saw that! The little change we had was that she was wearing a long jacket over her lace dress before getting it off, and that the confetti were back. It’s pretty funny because by the time they are supposed to explode on «All The Lovers», I thought olala something is missing ... AND BAM! The confetti were there! And not just a little, the floor was flooded at the end of the show! We then met other friends and left the festival to get back to our hotel. It was another walk of two kilometers and of course, we got it wrong like three times with the car on our way back to the hotel. The next day, Anita got back home by car and I took a bus (which was on time this time ! ) but I still managed to forget my football jersey at the hotel (thank god this was not some merchandising). If I thought at first this trip would not be worth it, I was wrong because I had a great time, the organization was fantastic and Kylie was really happy. It is quite complicated to tell you more about the concert, but I filmed about 10 minutes of the two concerts that I did: everything will be posted in a vlog very soon so that you can also enjoy! ou’ve heard about it in previous editions of the Kylie Times, the movie about Michael Hutchence with some personal videos from Kylie Minogue... It will be released on July 4th. The trailer has already been published on social networks and we can have exclusive footages with our Australian, on vacation. We also learned that at the time, the two lovebirds had nicknames when they exchanged messages from one hotel to another by fax. Kylie was named Gabby Jones and Michael was Swordfish. In the documentary, we can also see the presence of Bono, leader of the U2 band. According to the director of the film, Richard Lowenstein, the people who knew the INXS singer best were his girlfriends, who saw him in his best moments and in his worst moments.

a show in poland

O

n June 6th, the British music journalism website NME (New Musical Express) announced that Kylie has been added to the already stellar line-up for the Polish Open’er Festival 2019. The event will take place from 3rd to 6th July at the Gdynia-Kosakowo Airport (now having a festival at an airport is a strange idea, but the site is super close to Sopot, Poland’s most upmarket seaside resort). Originally, Travis Scott, The Strokes, The Smashing Pumpkins and Lana Del Rey were to headline the event, and now, Kylie has also been announced as a headliner. She will be performing on July 5th, just a week after she performs at Glastonbury 2019. Swedish House Mafia, Anna Calvi, Death Grips, IDLES, Jungle, Jorja Smith, Marina, Robyn, Rosalia, The 1975, Vampire Weekend will also be playing there. The price range for tickets goes from 289 PNL (around 68€) for a oneday ticket to 739 PNL (around 174€) for a 4-day ticket with camping. In fact there are so many different ticket possibilities that we advise you have a look at their site here if you want to know more: https://www. alterart.pl/shop/sklep.php

kylie minogue is joining The Block

O

n June 24th, the website of Australian magazine New Idea revealed that Kylie is set to make a return to Australian TV screens on « The Block! ». The Block is an Australian reality television series broadcast on the Nine Network. The series follows four or five couples as they compete against each other to renovate and style houses/apartments and sell them at auction for the highest price. A well-placed insider told New Idea : « Kylie filmed a guest appearance while she was in Melbourne on her tour back in March. It was like a military undercover operation for her secret one day of filming at The Block in St Kilda ». The 2019 series is set to air later in the year and her role in the episode was apparently “top secret”, indeed it seems the show pulled out all the stops to make sure Kylie’s return to the small screen was kept under wraps. « There was a closed set, minimal crew and all contestants had to sign their life away - above and beyond their normal confidentiality agreements and contracts » the source says. « Two of the new contestants are a gay male couple and are part of the Kylie episode, so Kylie was happy to be part of the surprise appearance for two of her biggest fans ».

kylie minogue on the one show

W

e all know that Kylie was invited to ‘The One Show’ one evening beginning of June to talk about her Greatest Hits album and her concert in Glastonbury, but the singer also made a little appearance at the end of June on this same TV show where she challenged the host, Matt, who was at Glastonbury for this particular show. He had to find Aussies and flags of the country, things that where spinning around and he made dice games to see if the audience was so « Lucky Lucky Lucky ». At the end, they organized a giant Locomotion (if you haven’t seen it, you must, it is so funny!).

i wanna go out... dancing !

ou heard about it in one of our previous issues and the video went viral: the two little girls who sang « Dancing » to their mom before she died of a cancer were able to meet Kylie during her summer tour at Blenheim Palace, Oxford. It was the TV show Good Morning Britain who kindly organized this encounter between the girls and Kylie and the singer took the time to interpret this song with them. The twins, whose mom was a big Kylie fan, said that this moment had been magical for them, and that they weren’t aware of this surprise. They directly hugged the singer, who was waiting for them with two small orange roses. Members of Kylie’s team (back vocalists and band members) accompanied them to sing an excerpt of « Dancing » in front of their dad and family members. They described Kylie as a very pretty and kind person. Their dad, Lee, said that she really took her time with the girls and that it brought a little ray of sunshine into their lives.

jason and kylie to return to neighbours ?

ASON Donovan is up for returning to Neighbours if Kylie Minogue and Guy Pearce join him. The star – who found fame as Scott Robinson between 1985 and 1989 – wants to reunite lovebirds Scott and Charlene on Ramsay Street. He also wants Hollywood actor Guy to stage an Erinsborough comeback. The 51-year-old said: « I always get asked about going back on the show – you never know, but at the moment that’s not the plan. I’d do it if Guy and Kylie said: ‘Let’s do a couple of days back on Neighbours’. It’d have to be done as a group package for it to have the right sort of feeling ». No doubt fans would love to see the much-loved trio back on the show. And Jason might just be in luck - last year, Guy, who went on to act in a string of blockbusters, was challenged to return to the show and fight for Mike’s former love Jane Harris. He even joked he might grow back his mullet for the occasion and admitted he still calls Jason, Scott. Jason’s daughter Jemma, 18, now has a landed a starring role on the long running series leading to speculation her dad would make an appearance. She’s the third generation of Donovans to appear in Neighbours, as Jason’s father Terence also featured in the show as Doug Willis. Jason achieved heartthrob status on the Aussie soap in the ‘80s before kicking off a music career. In the show, his character Scott married Charlene Mitchell, who was played by Kylie, and the duo ended up dating in real life from 1984 to 1989.

no biopic at the moment

ylie revealed that she had refused the project of a biopic film about her life because she didn’t like the idea of somebody else representing her in a movie. She said she could change her mind later and also revealed that a documentary was being prepared. According to her, it’s impossible to condense everything in an hour and a half, and she would need a great director to edit everything. In the last months, she reviewed a number of archives, photographs and films as part of the preparation of her Greatest Hits. She confessed that looking at what she did in the past is not something she is used to doing, that it’s not something that comes naturally so it was pretty funny and emotional for her. To be honest, I’d be really happy if we could have a new documentary such as the one we had for White Diamond!

Kylie in the press • June

dannii’s interview on her career and on her sister kylie australiA On May 29th, Dannii was interviewed by Anh do, for the Australian TV show « Anh’s Brush with Fame ». For those of you who don’t know the concept, the program features comedian Anh Do, who skillfully captures his subjects on canvas whilst giving us an insightful look into their lives, by interviewing them. It was a really great and profound interview, so if you haven’t seen it, we suggest you check it out. Of course Dannii was asked about her relationship with her sister. But not only, and we’ve listed all the other things we found out during the interview. Does it annoy you to be compared to your sister all the time? « It’s so annoying, Anh », she said. « It is, it’s really annoying! We’re a tight family unit and we support each other. I remember there was a lot of stuff written about my weight and comparing my size and physique to my sister. The general crux of it was that Kylie is this perfect human being and I’m not and I guess I’m lucky that I was quite a feisty character ». « I didn’t have a problem with it, like everyone else had a problem with it. I probably would have had some kind of eating disorder and some really bad mental issues dealing with it. I’m just glad that I’m kind of a strong person. And maybe in a way, you know that’s, you’re attracted to this job because you’ve got to have a thick skin ». And then one day, Kylie gets diagnosed with breast cancer. « Yeah it was really shocking. The worst part was that I was really far away. I was in London and she was in Australia, and I just wanted to get back, not only to see her - I just felt like “Oh I need to see your face” - but to be there for my parents because I was just thinking “How does that feel as parents to be told your daughter has this?”. We wanted to be there for her and then you throw on the media being interested in it and wanting to provide answers to the public, who were interested to see how she was. Navigating all of that was particularly hard ». It’s hard enough without the media and everyone wanting to know, let alone with, put all that on top of it as well… « Yeah and she was just an absolute star.

For the tiniest, littlest person, I don’t know where she pulls it up from but she was absolutely incredible with everyone and with the situation and being calm about it because she had to. Her life depended on it ». But then at the time, when Kylie was okay, your best friend was diagnosed as well... « Yeah, my best friend was dying of cancer. And so, the world was rejoicing that Kylie was better and everywhere I went, every person I bumped into, stopped and spoke to me about cancer. And um, my best friend had gone into hospital and I knew she wasn’t ever going to come out. I felt very trapped by it all. Trying to celebrate and rejoice and grieve at the same time. Really, it’s a weird feeling ».

Here are the other things that we learnt about Dannii : She grew up in a very normal household... In order for the family-of-five to live closer to the city center, her parents would renovate houses by buying « the worst house in the street » and then as soon as the house was finished, they would move to « the next dump » and start doing it up again. « We never got to live in these houses that were beautiful » she said. Because she was closest in age to Brendan, Dannii was quite a tomboy, but her relationship with Kylie was that of any « normal » sisters, they even shared bedroom! « There were typical sister fights and there was often masking tape that we’d put down the center of the room, it was so much fun! ». Her teachers saw « something special » even though she wasn’t the best singer or dancer... « Like most kids in Australia, Saturday night TV was watching Young Talent Time and I just loved all the singing and dancing ». Her dad found the biggest ad that was in the Yellow Pages for « singing and dancing » and enrolled her into the Johnny Young Talent School. « Teachers saw something special in me », she said. « There’s something about this girl and you should audition her. They said, ‘she’s not the best singer, she’s not the best dancer, but there’s something. See if you see the same thing ». She then joined the show as a « tiny tot » at the age of seven, becoming an audience favourite until her decision to leave at the age of 16. Julian McMahon’s family didn’t like her. At the age of 23, Dannii got married to Julian McMahon, the son of former Prime Minister William McMahon and wife Sonia. « His family did not like me. There’s a certain social pecking order and I was definitely not in that scene. Sonia only spoke to me a couple of times ». The strained relationship even escalated to the point that Dannii was banned from

entering Julian’s family home. « Sonia would not let me go to the family house. Sometimes Julian had to go and collect something and I was waiting in the car out the front. It was as if I’d done something wrong to the family but I hadn’t done anything wrong ». Dannii further revealed that Sonia caused issues at her wedding to Julian in 1994 (which threatened to not attend) – a marriage which ultimately ended after 18 months. « On the actual day of the wedding there was drama. Sonia said she wasn’t going to show up, so that’s quite stressful. Julian and I were going ahead with the marriage regardless. So she did end up coming and was causing a scene… it wasn’t the greatest… it was hard. I just tried to stay away from it, I just wanted to enjoy the day ». Dannii and Julian’s wedding photos were stolen and leaked... According to Dannii, she and Julian had a deal with a magazine, but between the time they were being developed going to print, another magazine had paid someone to steal the pictures. « The magazine that were buying them were trying to sue us, because they thought we’d done another deal behind their back ».

« Le magazine qui les achetait a essayé de nous poursuivre en justice,

To this day, they have no idea who leaked them - however, they strongly suspect it was « the guy at the chemist » ! She did her Playboy shoot to get out of debt... After her marriage broke down, Dannii was living in London away from her family and was broke. « I was offered to do a Playboy shoot which would get me out of debt. I actually felt that when I did the shoot, it was really liberating as well. It was just like a hand being offered to me to lift me out of it, just being reborn again. It’s one shoot you do and your problems are solved ». And it made Dannii more financially stable, her parents were against the idea. « Once you’ve done it, it’s done. You can never go back », they told her. A magazine wanted to run a fabricated story that she was HIV positive Dannii was working as an ambassador for the Terrence Higgins Trust, an HIV charity, and one night she came home to her apartment in London where there were flowers and a card on her doorstep. « I took it up to my apartment and there was a letter with it which said “Hi, I’m such and such journalist from

Kylie in the press • June such and such publication, and we are running a story tomorrow to say that you are HIV positive unless you contact us…What type of blackmail is this that comes with a bunch of flowers? ». Her manager called the publication and they said that they « knew more » than she did about herself. « They were so sure about it! They were letting us know they were going ahead with the article ». She then rang her GP and said, « I’m coming over to you now. I need help » to get a blood test to prove that she was not lying, and called the publication again « As we told you on the phone, I’m not HIV positive, so don’t run the article because it won’t be good for you ». She didn’t desperately want children... « I never had a burning desire to be a mum, ever ». Dannii revealed she struggled to get enthused about the prospect of having children because her hectic lifestyle meant she rarely looked after other people’s kids. « I’d never babysat kids because I never had time to do those normal things. I was nervous with my bro-

ther’s children – I never knew how to hold them or what to do – it wasn’t all natural for me ». But she said that all that changed after she had Ethan. « Now I see someone else’s baby, I’m like, “Let me take that baby off you. Let me pick it up. From that day on, when you have a child, you suddenly learn about all those things that your parents said to you with all the best intentions”».

Sharon Osborne didn’t like her either... « She didn’t like me, she made it very clear about that. I still don’t really know why, there were 3 judges and the show was running beautifully without a fourth one and maybe she wasn’t ready for it ». Sharon’s hate for Dannii was incredibly public and she « could not escape it. I definitely had to deep down through another strength » she admitted.

« You can’t replace anybody in this group » dailymail.co.uk Mel B reveals Kylie and Dannii Minogue will be BANNED from getting up on stage if the Spice Girls come to Australia during their reunion tour. The Spice Girls may be touring without their fifth member, but it doesn’t look like Victoria Beckham will be replaced any time soon. During an interview with 2DayFM’s Grant, Ed & Ash on Monday, Mel B made it clear that if the Spice Girls were to head Down Under next year, local stars wouldn’t be welcome on stage. ‘You can’t replace anybody in this group,’ the fiery songstress said when

asked whether she would allow an Australian singer to take Victoria’s spot while the group tour the country. Radio host Grant Denyer wouldn’t take no for an answer, however, suggesting the likes of Kylie Minogue as a possible call-in. 56 www.kylie-world.com

‘No... I think no,’ Mel said bluntly. ‘What about Dannii, then?’ Grant probed, prompting Mel to hit back with: ‘No, I just said no.’ ‘Jimmy Barnes, John Farnham?’ Grant cheekily went on. ‘No, no! Shut up!’ Mel responded, finally shutting him down. Isa, June 2K19

While the Minogue sisters may not be welcome on stage with the Spice Girls, they do share a long-term friendship with the iconic nineties band. Dannii and Emma Bunton have previously served as judges alongside each other on the X Factor UK, while Kylie recently showed her affection for the UK band during a sit-down

interview with The Jonathan Ross Show. Mel B announced the news that the Spice Girls are coming to Australia for their first ever Down Under tour at the end of their UK tour on Saturday night at London’s Wembley Stadium. Despite there being no official confirmation from the group, the

singer (nicknamed Scary Spice) made the surprising announcement just moments before leaving the stage. The band have been touring without their fifth member Victoria, but their reuniting at Wembley Stadium for the first time in 21 years has led to three sold-out shows at the UK’s biggest arena.

LIFE’S TOO SHORTS meet four women who read the sun magazine thesun.co.uk As Kylie Minogue gets out gold hotpants ahead of Glastonbury, four Sun readers reveal how the pop princess inspired them to copy her style. MEET four women who will be Spinning Around if Kylie Minogue brings her iconic hotpants out of retirement for Glastonbury next week. The pop sensation will perform in the legends slot on Sunday, June 30 – and could ressurect the shimmering shorts that we can’t get out of our heads since her music video 19 years ago. Kylie, 51, exclusively told The Sun she wants to get lots of people wearing the cheeky items. And that’s music to the ears of these four Sun readers. Here they share how they found the legendary outfit inspirational, and explain how the shorts made them feel Lucky Lucky Lucky.

‘With the right attitude you can wear it all’ JOANNA Earle, 35, thought her frame was too petite for a statement garment like hotpants, until she saw her idol, slim 5ft singer Kylie, nail the look. Engaged office worker Joanna, who lives in Kings Hill, Kent says: « Ever since I was a girl I’ve loved Kylie. One of my earliest memories is playing with a friend while listening to The Locomotion. Her music lifts my mood and I’ve spent many a night getting ready with Kylie playing in the background. I had my hen do recently and friends organised “Kylie Pictionary” and ensured the majority of the playlist came courtesy of Ms Minogue. I’ve always been a slim build and there have been times when I would have killed for a fuller figure, in-

cluding a bigger bum. However when I saw Kylie rocking those gold hot pants for the Spinning Around video, when I was 16, I felt confident that I too could wear short shorts. Over the years I’ve worn them for nights out – including for a friend’s hen do. I’ve even received compliments from other women saying they would do anything to be able to wear hotpants – which was such a surprise to me. Kylie’s incredible moves and confidence made me realise you can wear anything if you’ve got the right attitude and are comfortable in your own skin. Now I’m older, I’m happier with my slender figure and pert bum – and that’s partly down to Kylie and those fabulous gold shorts. If I look half as good as her when I’m 50, I will be very happy ».

Kylie in the press • June drobe. I’d wear little shorts and go out dancing. I loved it when Spinning Around came on in a club or a bar. I reinvented myself just like her. My life started to get better after that too. I’ve continued to follow her career. No one will look as good as Kylie did in gold hotpants, but at 45 I’m far more body confident than when I was younger. I’m bigger, a size 12-14, and I’ve had a baby. But as I’ve got older, I care less about what people think. Kylie wears what she likes and what suits her. I do too ».

‘She inspired me to turn my life around’ KYLIE’s Spinning Around video inspired Jayne Cherrington-Cook, 45, to go out partying after a break-up – and buy her own hotpants. The web editor of Paignton, Devon, is married to police officer Russell, 49, and has a son, Milo, eight. She says: « I first saw Kylie when she played Charlene in Neighbours. Being a mechanic, she was a girl in a man’s world and, like so many of my friends, I was enamoured with her. When she first came into the pop world I hated all her songs. But as her career went on, something about Kylie started to gel with me. I loved her style and many of her songs seemed to echo things that were going on in my life. I remember crying my eyes out over a boy to Tears On My Pillow. By the second album, I was hooked. I started customising my clothes to look like her. When the Spinning Around video came out, everyone was talking about Kylie’s comeback and how amazing she looked. It was a big era of change for me too. I’d just come out of a four-year relationship – my ex cheated on me and left me for someone else. Kylie’s comeback rubbed off on me and I decided to turn my life around. I cut all my hair off and changed my war-

can remember the impact it had on me and my friends. It made me realise hotpants are for everyone. Everyone was talking about how amazing Kylie looked. The music video was huge. As a professional tennis player at the time, I used to train in little sports bras and tiny shorts, and I felt embarrassed. I felt that people looked at me and thought: “What an idiot”. But that was my work outfit, I had to wear it. Spinning Around made it seem normal to wear something so skimpy. I didn’t stand out in ways that I didn’t want to anymore. The Christina Aguilera “Dirrty” video came out a couple of years later, and if you compare it to the Spinning Around video, Kylie showed hotpants can be sophisticated. I’m so excited to see Kylie at Glastonbury. If she does wear the hotpants she’ll look the same as she did before. It shows women look strong and sexy at any age. I now go to festivals and wear hotpants happily. They are a statement piece; I hope Kylie’s Glasto performance will encourage women to wear absolutely what they want. You’ve got to love what you’ve got ».

‘You’ve got to love what you have’ AS a professional tennis player, Natalie Neri, 36, felt silly training in her barely-there gear – until she saw the pop princess’s metallic marvels. Single Natalie, who is now a tennis coach and lives in Golders Green, north London, says: « I’ve always been a Kylie fan. She’s a complete legend and I’ve loved her since Neighbours. She’s awesome and cheeky, but in a really elegant way. That’s why she pulled off the hotpants look – because she was classy. Although I was only 18 when Spinning Around came out, I 58 www.kylie-world.com

‘Being a sex-kitten in your 50s is a positive’ KYLIE fan and full-time mum Bianca Drakes, 50, says the Australian singer’s confidence and age-defying style has proved an inspiration. Bianca, who is single and lives in Waltham Abbey, Essex, with her daughter Sadie, nine, says: « I’ve always loved Kylie and I put that down to the fact that I have grown up with her. I feel like I ‘know’ Kylie. She has had her share of ups and downs. What woman wouldn’t sympathise with someone who has gone through cancer and has also been unlucky in love? Like most women, I used to watch her on Neighbours every tea-time. On screen, and in real life, she has always come across as non-threatening and cute. Frankly, she can do no wrong in my eyes. As she has grown older she has transformed into a sex kitten. I

love this side of her and I like to think I followed in her footsteps. Kylie has such a positive attitude to ageing, it has rubbed off on me and makes me feel youthful and sexy. She can absolutely get away with wearing hotpants in her 50s. As a younger woman I’d always worn hotpants. I had my one favourite pair that I wore for ever. I thought I’d stop wearing them once I hit my 40s. It’s been a tough decade. The menopause kicked in. Suddenly I have had to be careful about what I eat and drink, otherwise it shows up on my waistline. Why not carry on wearing hotpants into my 50s? I might be older but, just like Kylie, I am more confident as well. I care less about being perfect as I get older, and I’m no longer concerned about what people think. Ageing not only makes me feel more comfortable in my own skin but more comfy in my hotpants ».

Kylie Minogue’s 20 best songs: ranked and rated telegraph.co.uk The news that Kylie Minogue would play the legend slot at this year’s Glastonbury festival gave some people a jolt. It doesn’t feel that long since she won our hearts as tomboy mechanic Charlene in Aussie soap Neighbours. But her catalogue is huge, comprising 14 studio albums and an astonishing 74 singles. She’s evolved from the girl-next-door, to “Impossible Princess”, sci-fi sex siren, plucky showgirl, wise Aphrodite and, most recently, rhinestone cowgal. We’ve seen her survive the breast cancer which caused her to cancel her first Glastonbury booking in 2005 and a long series of romantic disappointments – the last of which caused a nervous breakdown. “If I get hurt again, I’ll need a lifetime to repair,” she confessed on her last album, Golden. And yet she continues with consummate good grace and a shed-load of glamour. She’s won the respect and affection of everybody in the music industry – from the lowly tea makers and video runners to A-list fashion designers and producers – for her constant kindness and hard graft. She’s done it all by her own sparkly stars. As her triumph at Glastonbury threatens to put her back at the top of the charts, here we’ve ranked her 20 best songs. Kylie in the press • June 20. Breathe (1998) Kylie wrote the lyrics for this hypnotic ode to meditation in Tokyo after a friend told her: « You don’t realise how loud you are when you are quiet ». Aquamarine ripples of those liquid 1990s synths also washed through Madonna’s Ray of Light (1998) and All Saints’ Pure Shores (1999). A sly little chillout. 19. On a Night Like This (2000/2012) This big, Balearic club banger, complete with splashes of steel guitar, was the lead single for Kylie’s first album for Parlophone, Light Years. There was some tabloid kerfuffle over a version of the video in which the singer appeared naked. Kylie later dressed the song in big band drama for her Abbey Road record. « Don’t say it’s like a fantasy/ When you know this is how it should be »… 18. Dancing (2018) « Can’t stand still/ I won’t slow down… When I go out/ I wanna go out dancin » sings a countrified Kylie, shortly after her 50th birthday, in righteous response to the constant questions about how long a woman can expect to maintain a career on the pop charts. The twangy accent is odd, but the heartfelt rhinestone defiance is great fun.

by The Boston Globe. A disco delight from bass bounce to sequin-stuttered chorus. 15. 2 Hearts (2007) Kylie’s 10th studio album, X, was made in the wake of treatment for the breast cancer which was diagnosed in 2005. She came storming back to the charts with this defiant glam stomper, written and originally recorded by electropop duo Kish Mauve. The lyrics about « coming up for air » in the sunlight after time in the darkness reflected Kylie’s recovery and she vamped her way through every syllable: woo! 14. Especially For You (1988) A ridiculously soppy duet cashing in on Kylie’s on-screen (and off-screen, though they were told to keep it quiet) romance with Jason Donovan. But there wasn’t a dry eye at Hyde Park when the pair reunited to sing it for a BBC Radio 2 concert in 2018. Kylie had survived cancer and a long run of romantic disappointments. Donovan had survived a serious drug problem and years in the wilderness. Awww.

13. Come into My World (2001) Kylie breathes through, not over, the swirling beats on another unshakeable ear worm co-written by Cathy Dennis, who has recently spoken out about the challenges of being a female songwriter in a male dominated industry. « Kylie’s a such a great chameleon », she says. « She never stops giving new sounds a try ». This track won the singer her only Grammy Award. 12. Red Blooded Woman (2003) « You’ll never get to heaven if you’re scared of getting high »… teased Kylie on this low-slung, hip-hop groove. The track channelled the chunky synths and skip-along beats popularised by Timbaland but was actually produced by Johnny Douglas, best known for his work on George Michael’s Fastlove and Outside. 11. All The Lovers (2010) When Kylie enlisted British producer Stuart Price to work on her eleventh album, Aphrodite, they subjected songs to a “Parton test”. If the track worked in the style of the country

17. The Locomotion (1987) Written by Tin Pan Alley legends Gerry Goffin and Carole King and originally performed by the couple’s babysitter, Little Eva, in 1962, The Locomotion was Kylie’s first release on Australia’s Mushroom records, bringing her to the attention of Stock Aitken & Waterman. The Hit Factory remade it and that version remains her highest charting US single to date. Completely corny. But the sound of her s’mile is pure sunshine. 16. Wow (2007) The second single from X was written by super producer Greg Kurstin (Adele, Sia, Pink) and Karen Poole (from Alisha’s Attic) and recorded in Ibiza at Kylie’s request. Rightly hailed as “Madonna’s Holiday on studio steroids” 60 www.kylie-world.com

queen then it made the cut. Kylie said this sensual slice of mature electropop gave her goosebumps. « All the lovers that have gone before/ They don’t compare/ To you »… 10. In Your Eyes (2001) Not content with a chorus of “la’s”, Kylie got even more minimalist with a simple “oooOOOoooOOOoooOOO!” hook on this infectious nu-disco trip co-written with the Biffco songrwriting team who’ve been producing music on the X Factor since 2010. « I’ve been watching you lately », purred a predatory sex kitten, « I want to make it with you ». 9. In Denial, with the Pet Shop Boys (1999) The choral and orchestral emotion rises like an escalator through this tear jerking track from the Pet Shop Boys’ Nightlife album, as Kylie plays the cross daughter to Neil Tennant’s closeted gay dad. Her crisp consonants slice right to the truth as she says: « You’re not admitting you should be quitting all these queens and fairies / And muscle Marys / The rough trade boyfriend who in his pathetic own way / Denies he’s gay ».

6. Spinning Around (2000) Kylie’s first UK Number One since 1990, this giddy hit saw Kylie make a fresh start on the dance scene: « Threw away my old clothes, got myself a better wardrobe ». The teensy gold hot pants Kylie wore in the video for this giddy dance floor filler sent the nation in to meltdown cost just 50p. They were the star attraction at the V&A’s 2007 Kylie exhibition. 5. I Believe in You (2004) With its ecstatic vocal floating high over a deep bass throb, the lead single from 2005’s Showgirl album plugs into the euphoric legacy of disco classics like Donna Summer’s I Feel Love. The Grammy-nominated single was co-written by Jake Shears and Babydaddy of the Scissor Sisters. Shears describes being in the studio with Kylie as “playtime”.

4. Slow (2003) A superlative slice of synth pop, pulsing with retro-electro sounds, Slow was the lead single from Kylie’s eighth album Body Language. It was cowritten in just 30 minutes by Icelandic indie/trip hop artist Emiliana Torrini who was working on a folk record at the time. It was Kylie’s seventh British 8. table deadpan and that last high note is a shivering, rose-scented, chocolate-coated Turkish delight. 1. Can’t Get You Out Of My Head (2001) Kylie was instantly smitten by the demo of this phenomenal clubber’s hymn to obsessive love by Cathy Dennis and MUD guitarist Rob Davies. So much so that towards its closing bars she began to panic about losing the rights to another artist. She needn’t have worried: S Club 7 and Sophie Ellis Bextor had both rejected it. S Club 7’s manager, Simon Fuller, was unconvinced by the way it broke with chart formula by opening with its chorus. But far from revealing its core too soon, the technique only added to the seductive enigma of a song that took the pulsating purity of early electronica and sent it into weightless orbit around the shimmering, scifi possibilities of the new millennium. Kylie’s showgirl voice was spun into stardust and set floating into gossamer nebulae. It transformed Kylie into an experimental icon of serenely sexy, self-aware cool when she performed it at the BRITS, mashed up with New Order’s Blue Monday. Topping the charts in 40 countries and giving Kylie her first US hit since 1988, it was UK radio’s most-played song of the decade (followed by another Dennis composition, Britney Spears’ Toxic). Pangalatic pop perfection.

Interview • The One Show

the one show JUNE 3RD, 2019 UK On June 3rd, Kylie was invited to ‘The One Show’ broadcast on BBC One and hosted by Emma Willis and Matt Baker. She talked about the release of her Greatest Hits album « Step Back In Time », her summer shows, and especially about the Glastonbury date and answered superfan Douglas’ question, via a vintage phone. MB: Make yourself comfortable, just relax. I’ve got some great guests over the next couple of weeks and I think it’s fair to say we probably couldn’t get a better one for you tonight. EW: You’ve picked possibly one of my favorite people in the whole world ever. MB: It’s so good. Tonight we are stepping back in time in celebration of the princess of pop. * A quick video comes on showing parts of Kylie’s clips for Spinning Around, Step Back In Time, Love At First Sight, In Your Eyes, Wow *

EW: Wow wow wow indeed. Please welcome the sensational Kylie Minogue! KM: Hi! MB: Kylie welcome back ! Lovely to see you ! We should also say to you a very happy belated birthday. KM: Thank you. Yes. MB: You know I didn’t want to be saying how old you are but you celebrate that don’t you ? Because you had a big party last year… KM: Well I did wake up going « hmm fifty one now », because 50 was so glamorous like a nice big fat zero on the end of it. But no, life’s brilliant at the moment. EW: How did you celebrate this year because last year you had a massive party. KM: Last year was epic. So I knew that whatever I did this year would be a much quieter affair. Emm... romantic dinner yeah.

MB x EW: Ooooooh MB: Are you at the point in your life where time is what is special? KM: Yeah it is. And as soon as I think « I’m going to slow down a bit », well no everything ramps right up again. It’s just good. MB: You’ve got another album that’s coming out as well. And we should just mention actually you put a lovely little picture... Well Dannii did just celebrating the birthday as well which is so cute. KM: We were sitting on our back steps. We both had roller skates on and that frisbee, she reminded me that we were throwing the frisbee for the dog. MB to EW: Well this got us thinking, well actually got you thinking because you are a massive massive fan… You brought this picture with you, with a hairdo inspired by Kylie. Let’s have a look, there it is. That was kind of the inspiration (a picture of Kylie’s first album cover shows up). KM: Oh what is coming ? Come on ! Oh no, was it a paper plate ? MB: Well here it comes. * Photo of Emma who had her hair permed at the time + laughs *

MB: I love it. I think that’s good. EW: Hey. I tried hard, very hard. KM: How long did that take? EW: Well you know I went to a perm and I already had curly hair but I thought do you know what ? Kylie is nailing the curls. I told you this the first time we met, I think the first time 68 www.kylie-world.com

I met Kylie I walked into the room and I went « Oh my God I love you ». And then I said I actually had a perm because of you... and I don’t know if you remember but you went : « Oh I’m so sorry ». * laughs * KM: And then did I say that I never actually had a perm. It was just my hair with a lot of mousse and a scrunch dryer. MB: Oh mousse was the key. KM: Yeah mousse and a diffuser. MB: Yes the diffuser. See I know my hairdryer attachments * laughs * Anyway we’ve got lots of fans in our audience and some will be asking you questions at the end of the show depending on how much time we get. EW: And some diehard fans have been given the number to this phone. Look at it this phone. * Shows a pink vintage phone with « Call Kylie » written on it *

KM: Oh my Gosh. EW: And for one night only they can call Kylie. So we’re going to let you know when you get dialing, so make sure you stay tuned. MB: What a phone. Anyway. Step back in time. This is the new album that’s coming out with all the greatest hits. You’ve had so many, Kylie it’s just incredible. All these crowd-pleasers these songs or are these Kylie-pleasers ? KM: Well if it’s a happy crowd it’s a happy me basically. I think most of them are there. There’s a couple in there that were not as big a hit... I mean... God I don’t think what songs... You know if you start meaIsa, June 2K19

suring them « Can’t Get You Out Of My Head », « Spinning Around », they are kind of... They’re there (shows the top with her hand). « Lucky », « Locomotion », « All The Lovers » etc… EM: How do you pick ? There are so many. KM: It was quite difficult because some have become much bigger than they were when they were released just through life performance and just the kind of the love they’ve got so... EM: Do you have like a trusted fan adviser who can go « do you know what we certainly love that one ». KM: I need the phone that’s got « call Emma » * laughs *. Emma, I need to know which one can you not live without?… There was the majority of the album we all had the same songs and it just got to kind of pointy end where we had to make some tough choices. Yeah it was just group opinion. MB: It’s an interesting thought that though, about the advisers. When you look at the album and you can see your whole career and the decisions that you’ve made, had a lot of that been planned or has it kind of just come naturally for you and when it felt right you’ve done a certain song ? KM : I’m not a big planner. I admire people who say... « In two years I want to be here, five years I’ll be there, ten years… » I was not that person, and I don’t know that you really could in the pop industry. I mean everything changes so much and luckily I like change and I’ve been adaptable over the years. So no, I wish I could say it was all part of a grand plan but no it’s just a lot of luck and hard work. EW: See I think we’re just meant to be because I’m not a planner either. * laughs *

MB: Let’s see if we can map this a little bit if we can. Obviously it’s not a plan but Locomotion with an interesting song wasn’t it because of how that came about and really it was more, in the initial stages about going to get some singing lessons for your acting. KM: Yeah, I did have a demo cassette, demo cassette people ! When I was 17 years old I made a little bit of money on a TV show I worked on and got some singing lessons when I was

16, made this demo tape when I was 17, and I didn’t think it would lead to this but as an actor you think « Can you snowboard ? » Yeah. « Can you ski ? » Yeah. « Can you sing ? » Here’s a cassette. So that’s what I thought it would do for me. EW: And what about « I Should Be So Lucky » ? Is it true that it almost didn’t happen ? That song. It’s got a very very funny story. KM: So my manager at the time was… you know... It was the first time I had a manager. I couldn’t even say that, I’d say « This is Terry and he’s looking after me »... I didn’t know what was happening to me but we flew to London. We were pretty much ignored for the best part of the week so we did bus trips, Madame Tussaud’s, Harrods... This is back in the day when he would order a cappuccino and I’d want the froth. I didn’t even drink coffee then, that’s how long ago it was. Now I’m like « Don’t ask anything of me before I’ve had a coffee ». And eventually Stock Aitken Waterman, well Pete remembered that he’d agreed to have them write a song for me. So the story goes that they wrote it in 30 minutes or whatever, but as we know Pete Waterman loves to exaggerate. So, whatever it was, I’m so thankful, I recorded the song, got on a plane and went back home and didn’t know what would become of that song. EW: Can you imagine all those people now that are casting their mind back thirty years ago « Was I on that bus with Kylie that day »? * laughs * KM: But actually when I came over to record, Neighbours had just started happening. I don’t think I was recognized once, but it was kind of around but it hadn’t reached hysteria point and I don’t think anyone would have expected to see Charlene from Neighbours on the double decker bus. But I was. EW: I would have freaked out ! KM: Oh my god ! We could have had a hair conversation back then ! EW: Oh my. MB: Well, from hair to fashion to the dresses. I was reading earlier on, and I was amazed by this, that your grandma taught you to sew and that 69 www.kylie-world.com

you actually did a lot of work yourself altering your own outfits that would become so famous. KM: My Welsh granny, who turns a hundred this December… * applauses * taught me to sew, I would cut patterns, I would go to the market with like four bucks and come home… my mum would be tearing her hair out because I’d buy so much ‘tat’ at the market, like the Sunday market in a car park and I would make outfits. I mean I was smaller than I am now, if you can imagine it, so nothing really fitted me. I’d buy kind of vintage clothes and adapt them and then cut to making outfits for my first shows. We’d all be around the table attaching beads and then I end up with couture outfits. EW: What did your grandma think of that outfit ? * Shows the Can’t Get You Out Of My Head jumpsuit *

KM: Well I didn’t ask her. She’d probably say « What have you done with the sheets? I told you to make the bed not ruin the bed ! » * laughs * My granny is super cool and would come to the shows and everything. EW: I was gonna say. If I was your grandma I’d say « I wish I could get into that ». KM: Well yeah. And « can we have a word and have a bit more of that please ». MA: Well but back to the music if we can KM: No, actually she’d probably say « I didn’t teach you to sew very well »! * laughs * MB: Exactly. So you brought a new track along it’s called New York City. Let’s just have a little listen to this and we’ll talk about it. * Plays a short excerpts of New York City Music Video *

MB: It is kind of a bonus track cause loads of people wanted this released. KM: Yeah, we did it on the last tour. It was a demo basically and I had a really small gig in New York City and I thought « there’s that demo we never did… ». It didn’t really suit the last album, so I thought « come on I’m in New York City, I’m just gonna do this one night only ». And then it kind of grew and grew and grew and now it’s a bonus track. Isa, June 2K19

Interview • The One Show EW: It’s a good party song, very good party song. And now nearly 20 million people tuned in to watch Scott and Charlene walk down the aisle in 1987. Do you all remember this? * Shows a picture of Scott and Charlene on their wedding day and slow music comes on *

MB: All the arms are up. * Everyone has their arms up and are dancing *

EW: And unusually for a soap, there were absolutely no dramas on the big day. * Emma and Matt then talk about a couple that was on the show the Friday before and catch-up with them *

EW: So Kylie you’ve got a bunch of summer shows that are happening. And in two weeks Glastonbury. KM: Emma !!! Three weeks ! EW: Three weeks. KM: Not long ! EW: That’s just 21 days little days ! It’s gonna be amazing ! KM: Well you know... Everything at the moment is just theory, you know the setlist… I start rehearsals later this week. So yeah, I mean the setlist was quite something to figure out trying to get as many hits in. MB: It’s hard to dance in wellies, isn’t it? KM: I’m probably going to find out yeah. EW: What is the vibe going to be ? And do you approach your summer shows and gigs like that differently to your arena shows? KM: Yeah. Firstly I love outdoor shows. It just you know you got wind in your hair, everyone’s out having a great time. The weather can be good sometimes even. But this being pretty much a greatest hits tour to go tie in with the album, we know where we started and we’re not going to try and do things too differently like I would normally do with an album tour. So « don’t bore us, get to the chorus » and then take a ride down memory lane. EW: Are you gonna camp for the whole week-end ? KM: I don’t think I’m gonna camp. You never know though. MB: Yeah, you never know. Well

there’s lots of people that are very much looking forward to seeing you there. We’ve actually got some messages of good luck from some of your friends. * They show video messages of support from Jake Shears, Ricky Wilson, Pete Waterman, Robbie Williams, Jack Savoretti, Jean Paul Gaultier, Jason Donovan, Nile Rodgers *

KM: It’s so emotional ! Oh gosh thank you everyone ! EW: Are you drying your eyes on your skirt? * laughs * KM: It’s just a dab. Honestly I had to stop myself, putting this album together and working on Glastonbury… The overriding emotion is that it’s emotional. I mean it’s excitement, there’s nerves. Obviously it’s a big deal. But it’s the emotion and the history and hopefully the future. EW: There’s gonna be such a good vibe there I can feel it. MB: It’s so funny when you look at that title ‘Step Back In Time’ when you actually sang that song initially when you think of everything that is related to it… KM : I know ! What I look at is we’ve got the list of the songs and I know all the in-betweens, all the invisible stuff that no one else does and I’m really proud of those moments. MB: Well as far as Glastonbury is concerned the One Show will be there and we’re looking forward to seeing you. KM: I’ll see you there. EW: OK so there’s lots of Kylie fans in the audience tonight. But for those that couldn’t make it, we’ve given them the chance to call Kylie for one night only. KM: Better call Kylie! EW: We’ve got 3 devoted followers watching from home. I’m here, so I’m not. * laughs * MB: You don’t play by the way! EW: They’ve been given the number to this very phone. So waiting to call in we’ve got Douglas from London and you gave him a red rose at a gig in Copenhagen. 70 www.kylie-world.com

KM: Did I ? Douglas ! I hope you dried it, I hope it’s hanging somewhere. * laughs *

MB: We also have Amanda. Now Amanda’s from Belfast. Amanda waited for 6 hours in Dublin to see you. KM: OK, thank you Amanda! EW: And then there’s Christian from Cheshire, he works on a cruise ship. He has a month off soon and with his month off he’s going to 6 of your shows. KM: Oh my god, alright I’ll be seeing him at the shows ! EW: So the first one of you 3 to call in with the correct answer to this question gets to talk to Kylie. So Kylie what is your question ? KM: I was in the film Moulin Rouge. Which character did I play ? EW: OK so there you go. No messing around. Get on the phone. MB: Actually, so just taking Christian into account there, what lengths do some of your fans go to, to actually try and get to you? KM: Great lengths. Yeah, great lengths. * pretends to run * MB: OK. Well they’re still dialing. It’s a very busy switchboard here at the BBC. * The phone rings and Kylie picks up *

KM: Hello, Kylie speaking! DO: Hello ! MB: Who are you ? DO: I’m Douglas * Applause *

MB: Douglas from London! DO: Well actually, I’m Scottish but I live in London. As you can tell by the accent. KM: OK. Lovely. DO: Just a random night chatting to Kylie on the phone * laughs * KM: That’s right. So I gave you the rose ? DO: Yeah in Copenhagen. KM: Right. Do you still have the rose ? DO: Of course I still have it. KM: He still has the rose ! MB: There is a question Kylie… KM: Oh yeah ! So who did I play in Isa, June 2K19

Moulin Rouge? DO: The Absinthe green fairy. * Applause *

KM: And so, do you have a question ? DO: I do have a question for you Kylie. As Kylie fans we all have our favorite era, so what’s been your favorite Kylie era and why ? KM: Possibly right now reenacting the 1989 fake phone on set. * laughs * MB: You can put it down Kylie ! KM: Oh no I like it. It’s got a nice paint smell. * laughs * You know what? It’s really hard to choose an era but I’m gonna kind of not answer the question and say that right now is so exciting… Being able to look back on all of the eras and you know, imagine what the future might hold. That might sound a bit of airy fairy answer but that’s the truth. DO: And that’s great, I agree because I’ll be going to Glastonbury and I look forward to that. KM: All right well I’ll see you there. Thanks for calling in. DO: Thanks Kylie. MB: Amanda and Christian next time maybe you’d be so lucky. Anyway I think thank you to Kylie and all of your fans here tonight ! And good luck at Glastonbury as well Kylie.

Kylie Minogue’s 30 Years of Pop Perfection By Katherine Gillespie

The best pop music is a little bit emotionally manipulative, and Kylie Minogue knows it. Her parasitic signature single, 2001’s « Can’t Get You Out of My Head », is designed to stick permanently after just a single listen. A crush, its lyrics theorize, is much like an earworm — both can drive you absolutely crazy. Pleasure brings pain, or maybe the other way around. As her new compilation Step Back In Time reveals, the Australian musician has made a long and successful career of mixing light and shade. During her early years, when she sometimes struggled to define a coherent post-television career, the singer’s most memorable songs argued for good girl gone bad status: « Better the Devil You Know », Nick Cave duet « Where the Wild Roses Grow », and the transcendental, eternally underrated trip hop track « Confide In Me ». Then came the noughties, where she found her niche. Between 2000 and 2003 Kylie released Light Years, Fever, and Body Language — three era-defining albums filled with disco songs about lust and longing in the club, distractingly catchy but often hinging on that sad 2 AM feeling that the dancing will end, the sun will come out, and we’ll all have to go home alone. Her songs of this era are relentless, leaving no prisoners… Kylie was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005, returning to music in 2007 with the Calvin Harris-produced electro-pop album X, then 2010’s triumphant hallmark of fan service, Aphrodite. Since then she’s released Kiss Me Once, a one-off experiment with Jay-Z’s label Roc Nation that led her to work with the likes of MNEK, Sia, and Pharrell, and 2018’s Nashville-tinged Golden, which anticipated the whole Yeehaw thing. Even the lead single from that album, « Dancing », offers something of a party girl’s lament: « No one wants to stay at home/ Nobody wants to be alone ». Warm and generous on the phone from London, unusually unpretentious for a mononymous pop star, Kylie can easily summarize the overarching ethos of her career to date. « I would say the consistent theme is a kind of shiny melancholy », the singer says, completely off the cuff, when I ask how she’d survey the selection of tracks on Step Back In Time. « Some songs, like ‘The Locomotion,’ are about dance, celebration. But ‘Lucky,’ ‘Better the Devil,’ ‘Hand on Your Heart?’ Those songs are pleading ».

This is a greatest hits album, so let’s start from the beginning. You started recording with PWL when you were 20 years old. These are the songwriters behind Rick Astley’s «Never Gonna Give You Up.» Take me back to that time. Twenty years old doesn’t seem that young nowadays, but I think back then it was more so. A few years into my time with PWL I was a bit frustrated. I wanted to be more involved. I was — yeah. I was tired of sitting in the waiting room until I was cold, and then just doing rhymes and leaving. But I think that worked really well for me initially, considering I didn’t get into music the normal way. I fell into it from TV and I mean, it was a dream I had. But to go from working as an actor, especially in a soap where you get your lines, learn your lines, say your lines, move on, I felt the process at PWL was very much like that, so it kind of worked for me until I wanted to know more, and to do more. Sure. And also, I was really fortunate that I mean, I had like number one, number two, top five, number one. I just thought, « Wow ». I mean I knew it was great then, but the further I got into my career, I marveled even more. Like, it’s that easy. You release your first album, you go number one. I mean, yes. I remember listening to the hit radio station in Melbourne and they would have the top eight at eight and it was listener voted, and it was the first time I was potentially hearing my songs on the radio. And I am with my family in the front room, I think I sat on the heater or something, and there was the countdown. The further and further it got to number one, the more dejected we got, thinking, « Aww, I guess it’s not there ». Then I was in at number one. So then, well, I had to maintain that. You know, speaking of « Never Gonna Give You Up », I turned 50 last year and Rick Astley surprised me by singing at my party with some other people there. You know, talk about going back in time. And it’s someone that I didn’t — wouldn’t have much to do with back then, like the hit factory was called out for really good reasons. People just would churn through. Did you have clear-cut ambitions at the time, or were you just riding the wave? Probably more of just riding the wave and taking it bit by bit. I would probably call it more daydreams than ambitions. I wasn’t hell-bent on doing it. But then, people around me might disagree and say, « No, you do tend to set your mind on something ». But I definitely had my dose

am being influenced by Björk and Garbage, and indie pop, and people like Tricky. That was where I was trying to fit in. It turns out that wasn’t exactly my lane. I think for fans, they love seeing and hearing something different, and it definitely was a learning curve for me, which I am thankful for. It wasn’t successful, but strangely moved in its own way. But I think the start of that we got right, which was «Confide in Me ». That’s a great song. And signing with Deconstruction Records, which no one would have seen coming. Neither did I, so that was a really interesting period. I mean I would have loved to sing something like Impossible Princess again on tour, but there is increasingly less room to do songs that weren’t hits. Basically, we need to do the Anti Tour two.

of luck and opportunity. Maybe luck is making the most of the opportunities, I’m not sure. But I certainly didn’t have foresight, thinking, « I’m still going to be here in 30 years time with a canon of work ». That wasn’t my ambition. I was trying to get to the next step, do something good, and constantly learning. And even though it was successful, there was plenty of fight along the way, plenty of battles that had to be won. In 1990 you released Rhythm of Love, and the song « Better the Devil You Know ». It was a turning point, thematically. I remember that period so well, because I must have had a few little grumbles about wanting to be my own musician. And I remember Pete Waterman saying, « All right kiddo. What kind of song do you want? What are you listening to? » And I said, « I really like ‘C’mon and Get My Love’ by Cathy Dennis and D Mob ». If you listen to that and listen to « Better the Devil », it’s very similar. So it definitely marks a change, although I hadn’t left PWL, and Nick Cave wrote an amazing piece on his thoughts on « Better the Devil », which you could look up. It was the first one that had a darkness, which I probably didn’t realize at the time. I also think about that with « I Should Be So Lucky ». We all sing like it’s really happy, but it’s not. She wishes she was lucky in love. There was an awkward phase in your career between 1991 and 1994, when you released Kylie Minogue and Impossible Princess. What were you seeking during that period? Perhaps if I’d been at that stage of my life and career at a different point in time, it definitely would have been different. That was the mid ‘90s, and you can hear that I

Yes. Oh my god, please. Obviously the year 2000, when you released Light Years, changed everything. It really did. We’ve gone through my adolescence and I was ready for pop, the world was the world for pop. Basically the first meeting with Parlophone Records, I signed with them, and we were all just ready. « Spinning Around » wasn’t easy to get right. My part recording it was really difficult, but I know my A&R at the time was like a dog and a bone with that song. He just wouldn’t let go until it was right. Turns out, it was right. It was just — you know, when all the stars are aligned, and the video works perfectly. And we were off again. Were you getting worried about the state of your career? I thought my career was, if not over, very much clinging on. I actually bought a place in LA and I thought, « I might just might hang out in America for a while ». Then, « Spinning Around ». I’d been doing this for forever already. I didn’t know that was going to happen, and thankfully it did. Light Years also contains the track «Your Disco Needs You,» which is a really fun, consciously queer song. It was written with Robbie Williams and Guy Chambers, and well, I wasn’t there when they were doing all of the recording, but apparently they had this male choir, doing possibly the gayest thing they ever had to do. Robbie and Guy are just an absolute powerhouse force of writing and they don’t hold back. They did that whole thing. They were the ones who really captured that song - I wish I came up with the title. « Your Disco Needs You ». It’s brilliant. A fan favorite. Some songs, just through force of fan power, you know, they become guardians of that song. The amount of times when I am doing a show and it’s not on the set list because again, we just don’t have time. They won’t let me go without doing it, so we keep punching it out again. I think it lives in its own world. We gave it a bit of a video, but it didn’t have the backing of the label. But it lives on, in its own way.

Interviews • Papermag I always wondered about how insanely quickly you followed up Light Years with Fever then Body Language. What was the timeline like for you? You must have felt unstoppable. It was all very noughties. I don’t know about unstoppable, but it was all happening. Like I said before, before « Spinning Around », I just didn’t know what the future held for me. So, yeah, it was busy. Through that period, I got back into live touring. That’s the one thing I will be thankful for Impossible Princess. It made me go on the road in Australia. I had to fight for a measly projector and two dancers! Basically, the set was cardboard and lycra. We had literally nothing, but it just kind of got me on stage and connecting with the audience and doing small gigs. That led to 2001, the tour which was for my Light Years album. Then we went stratospheric with Fever and did the Fever tour, and really nailed that. Then Body Language, so right, it was busy. Are you a big partier? Because these are party songs. I mean, I used to be. I definitely think that your early twenties is where you’re supposed to be doing all of that. I happened to be in London, which was incredible. You didn’t club once a month, you went once or twice a week. You were mingling. You had to be there, it’s not like you could live through social media and pretend you were there. You had to be there and experience it and go where the lights were. To paraphrase Prince, you were either going home or going to someone’s house. They were heady and wonderful days. Now, it’s more like I’ll have a sensible wine or something. But, yeah, I can have the occasional big night. Just definitely not like the old days. But I do understand how music can make you stay up. How did cancer disturb the timeline - what would have been different? For a start, I would have headlined Glastonbury. Which you’re finally going to do this year. Yeah, I’m doing the legends slot at Glastonbury this year, so it’s the daytime one that should be a massive sing-along. It’s such an honor to have that and it’s going to be emotional, to say the least. So, I don’t know how to answer that question because I just don’t know how to answer that question. Everything was on hold, but I stayed determined to get back on stage and finish the sold-out tour. It’s really good to have that goal. You do hear those classic stories about people becoming ill or on the verge of illness and having to reassess their life and what’s really important. I wasn’t that classic story, where a stressed out business person goes, « I don’t want this life ». I was like, « No, I want it. This is what I do and this is what I’m driven to do ». Here I am still doing it, so I’m most grateful. I told a few Kylie fans that I was doing this interview, and they wanted me to ask about your birth chart. I love astrology. I love it. So, I’m a Gemini — Geminis love to be busy, love conversation and people. Probably the hardest thing of my entire career is doing interviews because you’re meant to give an answer, and Geminis love to be on the fence. We are fairly noncommittal. Oh gosh, I think I’m going to get this

confused now. I think my moon might be in Gemini and my rising could be Cancer. I might have those second two confused. I’m sure they could look it up. 28th of May. There is a great site, called « Mystic Medusa ». She’s Australian. She’s amazing. There aren’t any tracks from Kiss Me Once on this compilation. No there are not. Why? Well, there was only one hit from that, which was « Into the Blue », and I feel in general with that album, it was a lot of experimentation. It was a bit of a tricky time. I was between America and here, having different A&R. I don’t want to bag it. Lovely, beautiful Sia, who was executive producing for me. I just think that at some point the stars are aligned and everything is on your side, and they had their own pattern on that album, let’s say. But everything comes from something and leads to somewhere else. When we get to reboot this potentially for tour, I think we will have justice for « Into the Blue ». I love how there have been so many hashtags from fans. So we do have to give justice to them all. Justice for « Chocolate » is on the radar. « Chocolate » is very underrated. I know! We needed three CDs for the greatest hits. In 2018 you released Golden. Country music is having a huge moment right now - you were one of the first pop artists to get on that resurgence. That was thanks to my A&R, who incidentally was the same A&R who did « Spinning Around ». In the initial part of recording for Golden, we didn’t really have a direction. It was going in with some of my old favorites and new people and just seeing what would happen and what the collision brings out creatively. We kept trying to get a country element but we couldn’t quite get it until I went to Nashville, and then it all made sense. That place must have particular lay lines or something. There’s a spirit there, and it would have been totally disingenuous to suddenly be country, but definitely taking the inspiration from the songwriting point of view and putting stories into the songs. It was good at that point in my life to explore that. I don’t think that will leave me, moving forward. Although God, if another « Can’t Get You Out of My Head » came my way, I would take it, thank you very much. I would write it, or I would take it. You recently won a trademarking case against Kylie Jenner. How does it feel to be the dominant Kylie? Aww. Well. It’s hilarious that it caused such a kerfuffle. I think she has done amazingly well, but I think it’s just important that people know that there is room for more than one Kylie. I mean, I’ve been doing it for a long time. Now, people know the distinction, and it’s all settled down. It’s great. Actually, when I was young there was no one called Kylie, so to explain I would have to spell it out, especially in America. Thanks to Kylie Jenner, they do know the name Kylie. So, winning.

the herald sun (australia)

by cameron adams Kylie Minogue can feel the « anxiety building » as she plots her upcoming schedule. There’s a new singles compilation, Step Back In Time, released to mark her first official greatest hits tour at outdoor shows across the UK and Europe between June and August. That will include her playing the Glastonbury Festival on June 30 in the legends slot … « Everyone’s trying to take the pressure off me — ‘Let’s get through these shows’ », Minogue says. « It’s always that, let’s just get through the next bit. But when I start to get nervous it’s because all roads leads to Glastonbury really ». « By the end of my 75 minutes, and that’s a tough set list as opposed to two hours for my usual shows, it’ll feel like it’s gone in a flash ». « So I’m trying to remind myself to enjoy the moment. It’s hard when you’re juggling everything else. I’ve got to ease myself into that. You know what, just stop and reflect and be grateful and proud ». Also on Minogue’s agenda — a holiday. Since releasing the single Dancing in January 2018, Minogue has been promoting, then touring, her album Golden virtually non-stop, shoe-horning in her 50th birthday party last May, and also a new relationship. A lifelong workaholic, at 51, Minogue is embracing the idea of vacations. « I’m kind of into holidays these days », she says, adding, « They’re much better when you’ve got someone to holiday with ». Minogue has been dating Paul Solomons, creative director at UK GQ Magazine, for the past 18 months. 76 www.kylie-world.com

Isa, June 2K19

Solomons met Minogue’s parents during a stealth visit to Melbourne last Christmas. Minogue said her parents were impressed on many levels — Solomons is Welsh; Minogue’s mother Carol was born in Wales. « It all went very well », she says. « He loved Australia, what he saw of it anyway ». Solomons (favourite Kylie song — The One) has given Minogue a new perspective on the media after all these years. « We’re kind of in the same field (of media) but on the other side, if you can call them sides. We can relate to the fact it might look glamorous, and sure some parts are, but it’s hard graft ». « He started working in the printing factory with magazines, so he knows that business literally from the floor up. Don’t let me gush about him. He is so supportive, it was a tough year last year workwise, it was good to have your other half be there. He flew in on a couple of occasions, like my super hero ». Step Back In Time is the fourth official greatest hits Minogue has released — the album’s tag line is ‘Pop Precision since 1987’. « I don’t think anyone can react the way I do when I hear some of the older songs », she says. « Locomotion was the first demo I ever recorded, and it’s the exact same vocal still on there after all these years ». « That song brings up so many memories and emotions for me — I was just starting out, I didn’t know what I was doing. It’s always hard listening back. It’s kind of amazing as well. I’m proud of all the songs but I also see all the in-between bits ». « As a body of work, it’s impressive on one hand, and on the other I think ‘What haven’t I done yet?

What’s next?’ ». When the album’s title was released, Minogue’s diehard fans started making up their own potential tracklists, even down to fake cover art. After some online excavation through publishing sites, fans discovered a song called A Rose Is a Rose, which Minogue had recorded recently. Some were hoping for more rarities or unreleased material on the new compilation as a point of difference. Minogue says a new version of Step Back In Time, with more songs, is a possibility for a Christmas release. She also hasn’t ruled out the chance of a Kylie Anthology down the track, raiding the countless unheard songs in her vaults. « There is a chance of more to come. I’m as interested in those things as the fans are. A Rose Is a Rose was written and recorded, I’ve been in the studio doing bits and bobs. I don’t know how they find out this stuff. They should all do freelance work for Scotland Yard! ». In 2012, to mark her 25th anniversary in music, Minogue embarked on her Anti-Tour — with no bells, whistles or indeed hit singles. Rather she played fan favourites, album cuts and even songs that had only been heard through online leaks. After digging through her catalogue for Step Back In Time, Minogue says an Anti-Tour 2 is being seriously discussed. « We have to do Anti-Tour 2, it would be so much fun. Of course, it would be even more problematic than the last one, you just can’t play for four hours. Maybe that’s why Bruce Springsteen does play for four hours, you can’t cover everything else otherwise. But the 77 www.kylie-world.com

concept of an Anti-Tour 2 is fleeting about in my mind, it’s definitely been coming up in conversations ». When Minogue wrapped up her Golden tour in Australia earlier this year, she said the experience was ‘transformative’. As well as the Nashville-tinge to the Golden album, the tour saw Minogue reinvent her stage show. She found a new balance between joining in with her dancers and interacting with her live band — which gave her a glimpse into her future as a live performer. « That’s really one of the reasons I was so happy with that show was that’s what I wanted to achieve. You never know if you can do that, how the audience will react », she said. « For example I’ve worn some crazy outfits over the years, they’ve done their job and played their role, but that was one of the areas we made changes in. Let me feel like I can move and express myself the way I want to. It was very liberating. Thankfully the audience related to that, they got more of me in a way. The shared experience was just wonderful ». Post-Glastonbury and British summer touring, Minogue sees the next year being « studio-based ». « There’s all these songs I’ve worked on and ideas I’ve got that I want to explore but says a greatest hits tour for Australia in the future isn’t out of the question ». « The last tour was amazing, I loved it so much. I’d never done outdoor shows in Australia until that last tour and it really brings something so different, that festival spirit, it was brilliant. So yes, I’d love to bring a greatest hits tour home to Australia, maybe for some outdoor summer shows. That’d be incredible ».

Kylie Minogue Shares the Stories Behind Her Classic Pop Hits by joe lynch

The artwork for Kylie Minogue’s new greatest hits compilation Step Back In Time promises « pop precision since 1987 », and unlike a lot of the puffery out there, this album cover doesn’t lie. Whether concocting ice-cold robo-pop gems like « Can’t Get You Out Of My Head », frothy retro disco with « Spinning Around », dark, beguiling gems such as « Confide In Me » or delivering lilting queer anthems like « All the Lovers », Minogue can boast one of the most consistent catalogs in pop. She started out in a decidedly ‘80s teeny-bopper lane (making early hits like « I Should Be So Lucky » while still a teen herself) but quickly developed her own restlessly creative artistic vision. Since then, she’s continued to thrill and build a devoted fanbase even as U.S. radio interest waxed and waned. Ahead of Step Back In Time’s release, Kylie got on the phone with Billboard for a glittery strut down memory lane and talk about « New York City », the irresistibly joyous ode to sowing wild oats in the Big Apple that is the collection’s new song. Before we talk about your past hits, I wanted to say thank you for releasing a studio version of « New York City ». I was at Bowery Ballroom when you gave it its live debut and have been obsessed since. You were? Okay, so you get it. The response was insane. You know the history of it and story of it. We rehearsed it before that gig, the soundcheck, and we were all spaced out with jetlag. And you guys gave us so much energy that we did it twice. So I went back in [afterward] and finished it, so it changed a little bit, but I don’t think I’ve ever done that with a song – done a slapdash version of it just because we were in New York and then gone back and finished it. So thanks for that. Going back to the start with your « Loco-Motion » cover and other Stock Aitken Waterman productions. Do those songs feel like part of your catalog, or is it like a different life? Both actually. (Laughs) It’s just a completely different time in life for all of us. And that was the sound then -- that and probably rock, ‘80s big hair rock bands. And that’s what Stock Aitken Waterman were doing, and the songs were working at that point in time. So it’s worlds away from where I am now, and where we are, but there’s no now without then.

What there an album or song where you suddenly felt like adult Kylie taking control of your career? I think the whole thing was gradual. Some parts might have looked otherwise. The first change was « Better the Devil You Know » in the sound and the lyrics of that song, especially the video and the look. And then I suppose when I signed with DeConstruction in the mid ‘90s, that was always going to be a different sound, because I’d only really worked with Stock Aitken Waterman so that was quite a drastic change. But most of them have been bit by bit. There were moments [in my career] that seemed like a completely different gear, or « oh, she’s taking a right turn, we thought you were going to go left ». But it’s hard for me to look at it with that objectivity because I’m with me all day. Jumping ahead to Light Years. « Spinning Around » was co-written by Paula Abdul – did you talk to her about it when you took the song up? I didn’t. It was a song my A&R came across, showed it to me, we loved it, recorded it. It’s got a bit of a staggered background, where it took quite a while to the right versions of it. Not for me, my vocals were my vocals, but my A&R at the time was like a dog with a bone and wouldn’t let go of that song. And that was another change [in my sound]. Light Years was a definite move toward disco after the alt-rock lean of Impossible Princess. It was a determined, all-hands-on-deck segue back into pop. We probably over-popped pop, if that’s possible. Songs like « Love Boat » are so frothy, but then that led the way to « Can’t Get You Out of My Head » and the Fever album, where we went more – I remember my key words for Lights Years were « cocktails! » and « sunsets! » and yummy, delicious stuff. And then with Fever we were suddenly robotic and ice cool, like an icy feel. And Fever is a classic. It reintroduced you to American audiences. Yeah! Before that I was just « The Loco-Motion » girl forever. Actually, when « Can’t Get You Out of My Head » was released, I didn’t have an American record company. A DJ played it, this is before streaming, so someone decided to play it -- thank you very much -- and all of a sudden it’s « We’re putting you on a private jet, you need to be in Miami this weekend! » And I was like « what? » That took me by surprise as well. I hadn’t given much thought to the American market and suddenly I was there again. For that little burst, anyway.

78 www.kylie-world.com

Isa, June 2K19

You didn’t think it would break through in the U.S.? I hadn’t thought about America. I thought it’s just not my market. So then I was trying to keep up with it. But I knew the song was great. Then when it took over and I had all sorts of artists covering it, it just had no cultural barriers. It’s probably the most covered song I’ve ever done. It was amazing and a brilliant time. And Fever boasts another all-time favorite, « Love at First Sight ». That was a writing session I did in Dublin with a couple guys I worked with on the previous album, Light Years. At one point we weren’t sure which part was the chorus or the bridge, and we delivered four or five demos to the label at the time. And we were pretty certain about « Love at First Sight ». And it just got a « eh, we’re not sure about it ». And we were like « what?! Really? Are we that wrong? » And thankfully, they came back and said, « Wait, we do like it ». That was probably the first big song where I was really there since its inception. And I love performing it to this day.

Was there a lot of pressure on Body Language, the follow-up album? Just a little. (Laughs) We were doing more experimentation with that. As a body of work, it’s not as concise as Fever, which would be hard to match, but I did enjoy the recording process on that. The standout on that is « Slow ». And then on X, you worked with a young Calvin Harris before he conquered the globe. He was great. He was possibly a bit nervous, I think he confessed as much afterward. He was really doing well at that time -- Calvin’s melody choices and everything he did was amazing. It’s no surprise he’s gone on to crush everything. And also that was when I wrote « I Believe In You ». God, what was that on? That was the same day I met Jake Shears and Babydaddy. I think that was on another hits comp, Ultimate Kylie. Oh you’re right. See, you’re better than me. Don’t enter me in a Kylie competition. Do not place your bet on me. I can’t tell you how many records I’ve sold, how many No. 1s. I don’t know.

BBC BREAKFAST SHOW JUNE 27TH, 2019 UK BBC’s Naga Munchetty interviewed Kylie on June 21st and the interview was broadcast on TV on the 27th. The interview took place in the Gardens of Hampton Court Palace. So Kylie thank you so much for talking to me for Breakfast. I mean look at this (looks at Hampton Court Palace around her).

So I got you a palace, I got you a throne. We’ve got two micro thrones. Princess of pop what else ! What else would I get for you ? D’you like it? I love it ! And all of this is a bit of a warm-up for Glastonbury isn’t it ? Yeah (Laughs) Was that a goal ? Every time someone mentions it I’m like urghhhh.. Really after all this time and with all your experience? Yeah it’s a big deal for me ! Why ? Tell me. I mean there is history with this isn’t there? Yeah. And it’s the legends slot. I keep

calling it the afternoon slot just to try and take the pressure off. But... Yeah I think most people know I was meant to headline there in 2005 and I had my breast cancer diagnosis so I couldn’t do that. So by the time I am standing on that stage doing my own show it will all hit me. You know a lot of those things you just... You have to push them aside and get on with life but it will all come to me.All the more reason to celebrate I’m telling myself. Absolutely. I made it, I made it here. What happens ? I just clasped my hands really tight. I mean… So many mixed emotions, I definitely feel a sense of pride and achievement. Obviously I can’t give away any of the surprises. But there are surprises ? There’s definitely surprises, there’s 79 www.kylie-world.com

things that we are doing that are especially for Glastonbury. We’re not revealing those until that day. So again for us it’s gonna be... There’s not been an actual rehearsal for this. And will I see you in wellies or in the golden hot pants ? I am prepared and I do have wellies just in case. Ok. Gold hot pants ? Are they making a comeback ? Not the gold hot pants (Laughs). Oh really ? I don’t think so. Do you think you’re tougher on yourself now than you were in your 20’s? I think I still demand as much of myself but maybe I’m not as tough. I think I was tough on myself when I was younger because I just didn’t have the tools and I wanted to be better before I could be better because it’s only exIsa, June 2K19

Interviews • BBC Breakfast Show perience that makes you better. I’m gonna get you to think back. Think back on your career. Relax. I’m concentrating. Relax, think back. You’re 51, you’re amazingly successful, you’re still performing and drawing in the crowds... Is there anything you’d have done differently? Tons. Yeah, a lot of things. But I think all you can do is be philosophical and say well it got me to here and if I’d told my younger self don’t do that, don’t do that, would I have listened? Probably not. No regrets ? As the song Fame says it so well, I have a few but not enough to mention. You’re also performing for the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots for Brighton Pride, what does that mean to you ? The community and I have just been a solid partnership for such a long time. How did that come about ? Not too much to do with me I have to confess. I feel like the LGBT community just adopted me and said well, somehow we know she’s one of us. It’s a hard thing to explain because it’s just normal to me.

Didn’t you say you wouldn’t get married unless Australia changed the rules. Wasn’t that one of the moments? Yeah. That’s quite a big statement to make isn’t it ? Yeah, and they did change it ! One of the things people ask me all the time when I’m interviewing someone who’s famous is ‘They appear lovely but are they as lovely?’ And I genuinely do say she is fantastic (talking about Kylie). Is that a mental attitude ? Have you always decided this is the person I’m going to be ? I just think that’s the person I am. I’m not lovely all the time. I mean people can get THE look and they know… Can you give me THE look? You don’t want THE look. I would not give it to you Naga. You don’t want the look, you honestly don’t. I’ve got a look too. So gimme THE look and I’ll give you my look back. No you actually don’t want it ! * Kylie is giving THE look hiding behind her hands so the camera can’t see it*

Isn’t it awful? I know, it’s so bad. It’s terrifying ! Yeah it’s scary.

80 www.kylie-world.com

So when you began, when I was growing up and you know it was ‘Smash Hits’ and ‘Just Seventeen’ … do you remember those ? Love it ! You might even get a sticker with the magazine, or ‘oh amazing, a badge !’. What would you say to anyone starting out now ? Because they will look to you and think I want a career like Kylie has ! It doesn’t come without work. Fact. I would say when things don’t go according to plan, when you have failures you have knock backs I can’t say they don’t hurt, they definitely do, but if you’ve got conviction within yourself that this is what you’re meant to do, or what you want to do, then you just gotta notch it up as a lesson and I’m sure there’s more to come, I’ll fall flat on my face again I bet… Make the wrong decision, take the wrong turn... It’s like... It’s like life ! I usually shake hands at the end of the interview, are you a hugger ? I’m a hugger, I’m not gonna shake you hand, but I might steal your dress ! You look so gorgeous. It’s been an absolute pleasure, thank you so much.
