Put Yourself

In My Place

Nearly two months after Kylie’s fifth and eponymous studio album was released, Kylie was back with a new single: « Put Yourself In My Place ». The single came out on November 14th, 1994. It may not have been her most successful track, but « Put Yourself In My Place » definitely remains a gem from Kylie’s deConstruction era and is for many people one of Kylie’s finest ballads which really showcases her vocal power. It’s also known to be one of Kylie’s favourite songs from that era, which is probably why she has often performed it on tours. In November this year, we celebrated the single’s 25th anniversary (wow!) and this month we’re here with a little focus so you can learn everything you need to know about it. Hope you enjoy it Lovers!

*** The pictures used for the sleeves of the physical releases of the single were taken by John Rankin Waddell (better known as simply « Rankin »), a very famous British portrait and fashion photographer. The photoshoot, featuring Kylie in black and white with headphones took place in a car park in Los Angeles!

Focus • Put Yourself In My Place

The fact that Kylie is wearing headphones is, according to William Baker « another symbol of her new « serious » approach as it depicts her clearly listening to music ».

My Place pays homage to cult movie Barbarella, which is a 1968 science fiction film directed by French screenwriter, film director and producer Roger Vadim, based on the comic series of the same name. The film stars Jane Fonda as Barbarella, who is a space-traveller and representative of the United Earth government sent to find a scientist, Dr. Durand, who has created a weapon that could destroy humanity.

The film was particularly popular in the United Kingdom, where it was 1968’s second-highest-grossing film. Most film critics praised the movie’s visuals and cinematography, but found its storyline weak (oh really? Lol). As a side note, Kylie had already filmed a video inspired by one of Roger Vadim’s movies; it was the video for What Kind Of Fool inspired by his film And God Created Woman with Brigitte Bardot). The film Barbarella starts directly with a striptease done by Jane Fonda in space (nice way to attract people…). Jane said that to film this scene the set was turned upward to face the ceiling of the soundstage. A pane of thick glass Isa, Nov/Dec 2K19

was laid across the opening of the set, with the camera hung from the rafters above it. She then had to climb onto the glass to perform the scene. She later admitted that she was so uncomfortable with the idea of filming this scene that she had to drink a lot of vodka before doing it, and so of course afterwards she was totally drunk. Anyway, in her four-minute clip Kylie recreates this opening sequence (without having to drink vodka). She had been a massive fan of the film and wanted to pay tribute to Jane Fonda. Throughout the video, Kylie is floating around in a spaceship, wearing a hot pink spacesuit that she gradually strips off (so of course, it caused quite a stir as you can imagine). It was the first video in which Kylie removed her clothes and one of the earliest videos to explore human flight. The video opens with a (weirdlooking) spaceship travelling through space, just like in the film.

Film vs video

guys are, making them unable to see her any more.

She then becomes fully naked by the second chorus, but of course, we’re not talking about Madonna here, so Kylie’s always hiding her breasts with her arms or hands in front of them. She looks sexy and sensual without being slutty or trashy.

By the way, I don’t know if you’ve ever noticed this but there is a slight problem in the video: Kylie takes off her left sleeve twice… During the second verse, things get serious as Kylie takes the top off and unzips her tiny shorts before pulling them down (we don’t get to see this scene in detail though of course, this is not an X rated film!).

By the first chorus, Kylie has taken off other parts of her spacesuit (honestly though, it looks like a DYI spacesuit, where all pieces can be taken off one by one, like WTF) whilst two spacemen are watching her from another room Then one of the guys appears of the spaceship through a small at the window again and sees Kywindow. lie naked so she covers herself up with a red blanket (I’m pretty sure that 100% of the men were like « oh nooo, this ruins the whole video » at that moment) and closes a kind of blinder on the window. The video ends with Kylie laying on a bed, turning the lights off, and the spaceship travelling to Film vs video another destination.

Kylie enters a small room in the spaceship, wearing her pink spacesuit and a helmet. She starts her sumptuous striptease by taking off her gloves and then her helmet Next, she turns on a machine (again, just like in the movie) but we were in for a surprise when the that projects smoke where the 13 www.kylie-world.com

You lose all touch with the outside world and reality and I absolutely love making them. I’ve ended up in tears numerous times. No more videos in water or harnesses! ».

The video was shot over two days, and Kylie had been stripped with harnesses and wires, the majority of the shooting included wires pulling off her clothes during those particular sequences. A lot of staff was required to help with styling, hair styling and make-up (full lips and great dark eyes, just William Baker added : like Jane Fonda). « Again Kylie plays with image stereotype, the enchanting space warrior alone amongst the stars in her spaceship. The colours of her spacesuit include different shades of pink, a colour, along with red and purple, so often symbolizing aroused passion. In this video the tones are bleached and high-contrasts, the primary colours and pinks pulsating from the screen reflecting increased arousal ». « I think she owns that cute sexy space. She knows very well how to define the line between being cheeky and sexy, but she is never vulgar, it’s always a bit of a game, and I think whatever she does, you never know if she really means it ». The video for Put Yourself In My Place remains one of Kylie’s favourites, and won the « Best Video award » at the 1995 ARIA Music Awards (Australia).

CRITICS Put Yourself in My Place received mostly positive comments: the majority of music critics liked the song’s composition and production and highlighted Kylie’s vocal performance. For Marc Andrews from DNA Magazine, it was one of the highlights on the album, and he complimented its ballad-inspired production.

Cameron Adams from the Herald Sun ranked it at number 16 on his list of the singer’s best songs, in honor of her 50th birthday, and called it : « not only a vocal showcase, but just a damn fine tune ». Jason Shawahn (About.com) labeled the track as a « good » addition to her Greatest Hits compilation Ultimate Kylie (2004).

tal Spy said the track was a « classic balladry ».

TV and LIVE PERFORMANCES • Weirdly enough, the song wasn’t performed on Top of the Pops! It was performed, among others, on the following TV shows in 1994 and 1995: Steve Wright’s People Show (UK), Hey Hey It’s Saturday (Australia), It’s Only Telly (Ireland) and MTV’s Most Wanted (UK).

During MTV’s Most Wanted TV show she performed acoustic versions of Put Yourself In My Place and If You Don’t Love Me, accompanied by just a piano (played by Steve Anderson) and a guitar. Quentin Harrison from Albumism published a detailed analysis of the album Kylie Minogue, and noted that Put Yourself In My Place showcased some of her best vocals: « On the balladic end of the album reside « Put Yourself in My Place », « Dangerous Game » and « Automatic Love ». These adult contemporary entries are nothing short of palatial and saw Minogue tighten her hold on her own brand of soulful pop ». Similarly, Nick Levine from Digi-

• As for « live » performances of the song, for me, the one that I really like - mostly thanks to her look - is when Kylie performed the song (well it wasn’t actually « live » which is a shame to be honest) at the 1994 Smash Hits Awards. I love watching it because she’s « singing » sitting atop a grand piano, 15 www.kylie-world.com

ON TOUR Put Yourself In My Place is a song that Kylie has often sung at her tours between 1998 and 2005: the first time she performed it on tour was during 1998’s Intimate & Live Tour, then it was performed at the following tours: On A Night Like This, Fever (during « The Crying Game » medley), Showgirl – The Greatest Hits (as an encore track). Then for some reason, during 13 years, Kylie didn’t perform it on tour again until the promotional tour she did for her 2018 album Golden. On that occasion, Kylie sang a touching and beautifully stripped-back acoustic version of the song.

INTERVIEW EXCERPTS FROM THAT TIME « It did take a while (to make the album) but it’s not like they were cracking the whip and I was stuck in the studio with shackles and chains. It took a while because it was my first record with deConstruction, and so there was a settling-in period and we had to decide what this album would be about and I think what we all wanted it to be about was me, which is what we’ve ended up with thankfully and hence it’s called Kylie Minogue ». « There’s a lot of mutual respect and open communication (with dC) and when they talk about me as the product or the artist, and every time they’re always very careful to say « sorry Kylie we’re not talking about you like you’re not here » and it’s just things like that that are really cute, I mean they don’t have to say that, but they more or less forced me into taking responsibility for myself which is great and something I’ve always wanted ».

« I did surprise myself, pleasantly, from time to time, and with all the things that I did on the album I think I’ve never sounded the way I do on this album before and I kind of knew that I could do it, but I just needed to work with people who would really encourage me and bring it out of me and I think that collectively the producers formed a safety net so that I could try a little bit more. I had more time, if it didn’t work I could do it again whereas I used to make albums in about two weeks, and you know if you made a mistake there wasn’t that much you could do about it, it was out in the stores before you knew it ». « My first album sold so many copies; there are so many copies of that really nasty picture all around the world. So I have to shift the placement of importance and rather than being sales figures… I’m so pleased with my new album, and I’m pleased that it has respect and credibility and people talk about it and my peers listen to it, that’s really important to me ». « I don’t really mind so much what someone does, talking about men, but they have to, I don’t know, maybe it’s because my life is so full anyway and I meet so many interesting people but they would have to be very powerful within themselves, someone with charisma and presence and someone that makes me laugh ».

« I haven’t found that being a woman has made it more difficult for me in this industry but then I had a quite a magical entrance in it. A girlfriend of mine is wanting to sign with a record company and she asked the heads of the record company who said « well we could discuss this over diner » so I’m thinking for a lot of women it must be really difficult but I haven’t come across it and I’m quite proud to be a woman in this industry. I use being a woman in this industry, why shouldn’t I ? ». « You can be everything one day and nothing the next (in this industry) but I don’t like to try and « imitate » men in this industry, I like to be a strong woman in it ». « If I look at the glass as being half empty then I can think about a lot of different things that I missed out on, going to university, getting a backpack and making my way around the world, but I think I gained a whole lot more, that’s only because I tend to see the glass as half full ».

« I think as far as meeting potential boyfriends go, probably if there’s someone that I’d quite like to say hello to, he might be a bit intimidated by me or by what I represent or whatever, and it’ll be the guy that I really didn’t want to talk to that comes up « Oh I think you’re really great » and I’m like « Hmm thanks » (laughs). I really like meeting people when they know nothing about me which isn’t very often but in the depths of America it happens and it’s great ».

« We all love to read gossip, I can’t deny that, I love a bit of it myself but there was a time when I seemed to have a different boyfriend every month! ».

DOCTOR WHO Broadcast on December 25, 2007 on BBC One, « Voyage Of The Damned » is a special episode of Doctor Who featuring Kylie. She plays a waitress, Astrid Peth alongside David Tennant, who had the main role in the series at that time. If you’ve never seen the episode (which lasts 72 minutes), here’s a quick summary: The TARDIS collided with a ship called the Titanic. To investigate further, the tenth doctor runs the TARDIS self-repair program and boards the Titanic, where the doctor discovers that it is an interstellar ship from the planet Sto. On the model of the Earth liner of the same name, the ship is in orbit around present-day Earth to observe « primitive cultures » - in particular Christmas. The Doctor decides to hide and joins a group of strangers including the waitress Astrid Peth during a brief excursion to London. However, the people of London fled in fear because of the alien attacks of the previous two Christmas…

What to watch?

If you don’t like all these different TV shows (well you’re obviously a complicated person to start with) or if you want to find other shows / concerts to watch during the holiday season, here is our small, non-exhaustive selection!

NEIGHBOURS And why not ? Most of Kylie’s youngest fans have never seen episodes with Kylie as Charlene... So why not start now (but unfortunately the series is not on Netflix). For your information, Kylie appeared on the screen in the series from April 17, 1986 to July 26, 1988... This week between the holidays will probably not be enough to watch all the episodes...

APHRODITE, LES FOLIES As if there weren’t enough Kylie tours to watch... One of our favorites (a brilliant masterpiece, let’s be honest): « Aphrodite Les Folies ». The DVD was filmed, as often, in London. Kylie traveled the continents and did a total of 77 dates. Among our favorite tracks: « Aphrodite » in introduction, « Illusion » and « Looking For An Angel ».

MOULIN ROUGE Who hasn’t seen Moulin Rouge yet with Kylie as a green fairy? With Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor in the lead roles, the film was nominated in eight Oscar categories and won awards for two of them: « Best Art Direction » and « Best Costume Design ». Here is a short summary: a young Englishman from Paris in 1899, has a passion for Satine, singer at the Moulin Rouge. However, the manager promised her to a duke in exchange for funding her next production. While the young lovers meet in secret, Satine’s wedding day is getting closer, but she hides a fatal secret from Christian and the duke.

WHITE DIAMOND A documentary so intimate and moving... To tell the truth, we never get tired of watching it and we feel closer to the singer after seeing it. Directed by William Baker, it is one of the best documentaries (or even the best) to date about the singer, and I think it’s safe to say that we would all love to have this type of behind the scenes documentary a little more often, or even for every tour lol. If you decide to watch it, don’t forget your box of tissues. 27 www.kylie-world.com

THE GOLDEN DVD

THE REISSUE OF STEP BACK IN TIME ( OR ANY OTHER COLLECTOR’S ITEM )

Well, I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the DVD came out so close to Christmas! The advantage is that if you get bored at the table, you can quickly leave the table, and get warm under a plaid with a little hot chocolate and relive this great concert.

Given the number of versions that exist each time Kylie releases albums (CDs, cassettes...) you will inevitably find something that can make you happy and which would complete your collection!

Gifts to find under the tree (or to offer)

A KYLIE FRAGRANCE Let’s not forget them! It’s true that it’s been a while since Kylie hasn’t released a new perfume, but some are still available in some supermarkets with a bit of luck or on some website such as eBay or even Amazon. A nice gift that is always a pleasure, especially since the bottles and packaging are still very pretty! Note also that it can be a mixed gift because Kylie had created a perfume for men whose model for advertising was none other than her former boyfriend Andres Velencoso...

What are you going to receive or what to offer a Kylie fan? Ok, actually if you’re wondering what to give a Kylie fan, we have no idea how you came across our magazine. But here is a list of presents that you could find under your christmas tree.

THE 2020 CALENDAR A classic that you will inevitably have, it’s a little like the Christmas present for the coming year every year !

THE STEP BACK IN TIME WATCH THE MERCHANDISING Because the summer tour has obviously ruined us and we can’t buy all the merchandising at once, a new t-shirt or hoodie could be added to your wardrobe!

Christmas playlist for Christmas Eve Tired of hearing Mariah Carey’s « All I Want For Christmas » during each Christmas eve or on the radio and in all the malls where you go shopping? We understand you, we feel the same. This is why we have prepared a small selection of our favorite Kylie songs, put together thanks to the singer’s Christmas albums. So these are our favorite tracks, but the best option is actually to play the full albums without selecting any songs, if you don’t want to get up to change the songs every 4 minutes.

SANTA BABY There is « All I Want For Christmas » by Mariah Carey, but for Kylie fans, we have our favorite Christmas classic and it’s « Santa Baby », and she has been singing it for quite a few years now!

EVERY DAY’S LIKE CHRISTMAS Kylie shot a great video, but the fact that her exboyfriend is in it was no longer appreciated on her YouTube channel so the video has completely disappeared. However, we really like this track and it’s one of our favorites on this list, especially since it’s a song written for the occasion by Chris Martin of Coldplay.

LET IT SNOW Nice kitsch and good Christmas theme, even though we’re gonna lie, it’s been a while since we haven’t had snow at the end of the year.

29 www.kylie-world.com

SANTA CLAUS IS COMING TO TOWN In virtual duet with Frank Sinatra, this track is also part of the Christmas classics, and in addition, if no one else but you wants to listen to any Kylie tracks at Christmas, you have a solution here as you can listen to it whilst people may not notice Kylie’s singing. And if there is a problem with someone just say that you were sure that you had put on the original version.

100 DEGREES Even if they are in a very bad position right now in Australia (we’re thinking of you, be careful with this hot weather and all those different fires), « 100 degrees » is one of the fan’s favorite Kylie Christmas tracks in this period and is also a double gift, with Dannii’s presence, it’s two Minogues for the price of one.

CHRISTMAS ISN’T CHRISTMAS ‘TILL YOU GET THERE In our playlist because this song is really catchy. Whether it will make your family dance remains to be seen. Laeti, Nov/Dec 2K19

CHRISTMAS BALLS This is the classic decoration on the tree: the Christmas balls. Kylie has released a few which were available on her website and at her pop-up shop in London before her concert at the Royal Albert Hall. If you couldn’t get any (or if like me it didn’t survive the journey from London to home), you can buy very simple ones, buy glitter pens that stick, and paint them according to your tastes , either by making K (or the K-tag), or by writing Kylie on it, it’s as you want!

STAR ON THE TREE

The decoration Who says Christmas says decoration, whether for gifts, the tree or the Christmas meal table. Are you lacking inspiration? It’s a shame because considering this magazine’s release date, there is very little chance that you will be able to finish the decoration on time unless you are a champion. Here are some ideas that you can use for next year though.

We did it on our tree when the first Christmas album was released, we printed printing a picture of Kylie and put it at the top of the tree, she was our very own star (well, let’s be honest, she’s always our star we don’t need a Christmas tree for that). Well, now you can buy it in the Christmas shop for £15, as well as a version where she sits on a gift. I didn’t quite understand how it stands up, but I hope it holds well for this price (otherwise print the image yourself and use some tape, it is tested and approved).

ROGER

KM PLACEMATS Another idea with the small photos of Kylie standing and which are available in her shop, you can put them around the table and write the names of your guests on them... (Very handy when Uncle Roger never knows where to sit and that the guests take hours to know next to whom they are going to eat... Here it would take them only several minutes to find where they should sit ...).

GLITTER FROM THE SHOW

KM CANDLES To light up the meal (in addition to your presence), you can put a few Kylie at Home candles on the table. Be careful, however, don’t put the wrapping paper too close to the candle, a drama happens so quickly…

Always practical, if like us you have collected the glitter from the various concerts during « Raining Glitter », you can reuse them to put them in the tree or on the floor. Do keep in mind though that you’ll have to clean everything afterwards, you saw it yourselves at the concerts, afterwards you can still find glitter absolutely everywhere ... (You can also use the glitter on your Christmas table). PS : Kylie is not included with...

THE DRESS

SHOES

If you have a fairly high budget, Revolve sells this dress for € 630 (ewwww it’s still expensive). For the smallest budget, Pretty Little Thing has a strapless midi dress and all gold for 62 euros.

For shoes, they have to go with the dress so choose gold pumps. You can find them everywhere in online stores, our choice being focused on those of the Zalando site, the Anna Fields for 29.95 euros.

EARRINGS

A BAG And a style would not be complete without a small clutch bag (let’s not take too much, apart from your phone and your tissues if you are already ill, you don’t need much). This little velvet bag from Liars And Lovers will be perfect for the occasion! It is available on Asos and costs 41.99 euros.

The earrings also remain in the theme with these hoops available on Asos for 13.99 euros.

YOU ! Obviously for Christmas Eve, everybody wants to dress up well. Among the outfits that marked us and which seems appropriate for these end of year celebrations: the gold dress that Kylie wore during the « Golden Tour », during the disco act with « Raining Glitter » and « Locomotion » in particular. If this dress had been adorned with diamonds, we decided to opt for a much cheaper version but just as pretty. Here is a small dress and make-up guide to be ready for Christmas Eve and to be able to dazzle everyone (gentlemen, I’m sorry this section is not especially for you, but I’m sure you will find pretty clothes that shine!).

Kylie IN dubai From December 5th to 7th took place the 50th anniversary of Rugby Sevens in Dubai. Our favorite Australian, who hadn’t sung in the city for a few years, was headlining the Friday concert. We were fortunate enough to be there to attend this last concert of the year, which brought us straight back to the Kylie Summer. Here is a summary of this rather unique experience.

Focus • Kylie in Dubai

THE RUGBY 7S If one day I had been told that I was going to attend a rugby event, I think I would have laughed. I tried to watch the World Cup on TV and tried to understand, but I really don’t get this sport’s rules! It seems Rugby Sevens is different. Ok, so I still didn’t understand the rules, but I have seen some small differences between the two games and with the help of the event’s official site, I’m going to try and explain you - as clearly as possible - the rules of the game. Rugby Sevens is much quicker than normal rugby, and much more intense. Normally, on the field the teams are composed of 15 players, but in Rugby Sevens and as its name suggests, only seven players are needed, with half-times of seven minutes (ten for the final), which results in a speed action game and requires agility, good physical form (crossing the whole field really is sport, and it’s worse than a marathon to get to the front row for a Kylie show at Hyde Park) and clever tactics (oh, just like when you want a front row for Kylie). With Rugby Sevens, you will find fewer scrums (well there are some of them of course) but the 14 minutes of play are quite entertaining and it’s pretty fun to watch. The game is recognized as an Olympic sport after making its debut at the 2016 Summer Olympics. 300 teams are invited each year to participate in this event and meet teams from around the world.

To tease Kylie’s arrival at the event, a video was posted by World Rugby Sevens on social media, on which we can see some players singing « Can’t Get You Out Of My Head » and « Spinning Around », and trying to dance at the same time. Suddenly, their big muscles are less scary (even if some of you would like to be in a scrum with them, I see you coming !).

THE CONCERT Kylie was expected to sing on Friday evening, so it was natural that we went to the event on Friday afternoon, in order to be able to enjoy a bit of rugby and the atmosphere on site (and the food, of course). As soon as we arrived at the place of the event (about 18.5 miles away from the city center), we saw many disguised people (they seem to particularly like unicorns) and we were very well received by the staff on site to get our places and our wristband for the concert. You have to know that the atmosphere was totally different from downtown Dubai, and it really felt like being in England, with beer flowing all over the place and where people were like really, reallyyyyy drunk (alcohol is banned outside the premises for consumption in Dubai and being drunk can lead you... to jail). We spent the afternoon watching rugby and it was pretty funny but all the excesses of Dubai quickly caught up with us when a plane (a Boeing type one, you know, those which contain a lot of people) was flocked with the image of the event and flew over the stadium twice. It is really different from the opening ceremonies in France... There were several fields on site, enabling the teams to compete all day long, and Kylie had to perform on Pitch 2, which closed at 5:00 pm to get the place ready. We were able to witness the layout of the barriers and the setting up of the control room. A few fans were there (some of whom were far too drunk by the way - some people remember, they lost an ear…) but there was no real queue until an hour before the opening of the special area for the Golden Circle.

On the organization side, we witnessed a drama again (for a change)… The organizers decided to open the barrier in a very special way on one side instead of opening it in the middle, which means that many fans who had been waiting for a while thought they were going to be « scammed ». This is without counting on our front rows experts: as soon as the barrier opened, everyone who stood in line early enough pushed the others, security was overwhelmed so we all managed to get through fairly easily! The second problem came when we noticed that there were people entering the Golden Circle, but from the other side. Before arriving in the square, we were again stopped in front of a second security area, which this time did not let anyone pass... Some other fans who had seen other people get in before us decided to push everyone to get through, and once again, we were very lucky lucky lucky, the security could not manage everyone, and we were in ! We later learned that there were actually two entrances to the Golden Circle, but that the security didn’t open both at the same time… It reminded us a bit of Newcastle where they didn’t know where we were supposed to go... 35 www.kylie-world.com

perdu une oreille…) mais il n’y a pas eu de réelle file d’attente avant une heure avant l’ouverture de la zone spéciale pour le Golden Circle. Côté organisation, on a encore assisté à un drame (pour Laeti, Nov/Dec 2K19

The advantage of all this is that, in the end, we had to wait less than 45 minutes before Kylie arrived on stage, and that was quite nice! It was around 9:15 p.m. / 9:30 p.m. when the dancers and musicians got up on stage, followed by Kylie, who arrived in a silver/gold jumpsuit to perform « Love At First Sight ». After three songs, the time has come for the singer to go backstage to make the first costume change with a long dress with some laces. For the third act, Kylie put on her red jumpsuit, and even found it a little too hot to wear it! For the fourth act, Kylie chose a totally disco-ish long silver dress, and personally I loved it! For the final act, she wore a black dress with little silver threads over it, it was rather nice! If the setlist was more or less similar to the Summer Tour one, we however noted the addition of the song « Celebration », which Kylie performed as a surprise to the public (obviously the few musicians were aware). A new version of « Can’t Get You Out Of My Head » was also interpreted, a more disco version, in the influences that the singer wishes to have on her next album. Our Australian was also on top form and I personally hadn’t seen her that happy at a concert since Glastonbury. Kylie had a great time on stage with the audience and was really thrilled to perform her songs in Dubai.

Shortly before her concert, Kylie met two little boys, James and Jack, from the Joining Jack association. The ultimate goal of the association is to find a cure for Duchenne muscular dystrophy. They try to raise funds to increase life expectancy to help Jack, but also little boys around the world who suffer from Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a genetic disease that causes progressive degeneration of the whole muscles of the body. The little boys, who wore jumpers in the colors of their rugby team (which was unfortunately eliminated in the quarterfinals) were able to talk about Jack’s illness and the association to Kylie. A message was also relayed by the singer. The members of Joining Jack declared themselves very happy that Kylie had shared this, in order for the disease to be known as much as possible, to have a larger audience to spread their messages and talk about what they are fighting for.

Focus • Kylie in Dubai (One fan later tweeted, « Kylie Minogue did a nu-disco remix of « Can’t Get You Out Of My Head » in Dubai, I think she’s teasing the serve of the nu-disco album that’s to come », with a gif of singer Brandy crying and falling to the floor).

REVIEWS gulfnews.com by Marwa Hamad Australian pop star and style icon Kylie Minogue returned to the UAE at the Dubai Rugby Sevens on Friday night, and the singer pulled out all the stops for her devoted fans — including a number of dazzling outfit changes. Minogue performed on the second night of the annual rugby tournament in the UAE — which celebrated 50 years this year — where she showcased hits including « Love at First Sight », « On A Night Like This », « Get Outta My Way », « Shocked », « Step Back in Time », « Where the Wild Roses Grow », « Celebration » and « Spinning Around ». When it came to her track « Especially for You », Minogue referred to it as « one gigantic duet » between herself and her vocal followers in the audience. In typical Minogue fashion, the show was just as much about her beloved music as it was about creating arresting visuals on stage. During « Especially for You », the singer swayed in a silver, floor-length, reflective sequinned dress, juxtaposed against a massive digital floral background. Meanwhile, two of her performers held each other in the shadows and danced to her voice. « This is the best office party — this actually is our office Christmas party, by the way », she joked.

2019 has been a big year for Minogue, who released her greatest hits compilation « Step Back In Time: The Definitive Collection » in June. She also came full circle when she made her debut at Glastonbury Festival in the UK this year, 14 years after she had to cancel her headlining set at the same festival due to her breast cancer diagnoses in 2005. Minogue’s reportedly broke records for highest attendance at Glastonbury in history, beating both Ed Sheeran and Adele. Minogue, who turned 51 over the summer, has released 14 studio albums to date, starting with her debut album « Kylie » in 1988 and wrapping up with her 2018 record « Golden ». Dubai-based artist and illustrator Khalid Mezaina tweeted that this was his 10th time seeing Minogue in concert. « [Kylie Minogue’s concert at the Rugby Sevens] did not disappoint », he tweeted. « An amazing set of her greatest hits. I was smiling throughout. Thanks Kylie for yet again an amazing night ».

When Minogue performed « Wow », she was wearing an equally shiny number — a bronzy gold retro shirt-pant combo that felt both nostalgic and futuristic. Perhaps her most show-stopping outfit change, however, which she later posted to Twitter and credited to London fashion house Christopher Kane, was a puff-sleeve lace-sequin number that glittered elegantly under the stage lights. But she broke the shimmery streak of outfits for one particular song, which also coincidentally broke the internet: « Can’t Get You Out Of My Head ». She performed the track with a disco tinge to it, and as some fans speculated on social media, this could be a hint at the genre her upcoming album may take. « I think I’m just going to let the next track start — I’m not even sure if I need the microphone », said Minogue, dressed in a lobster red jumpsuit, as the crowd erupted into a singalong of the single. 38 www.kylie-world.com

timeoutdubai.com When it comes to the Dubai Rugby Sevens – the longest running sports event in the Middle East for very good reason – it doesn’t take much to get crowds excited. There for the rugby? You were in for a brilliant few days of short but sweet matches. Showing off a hilarious costume? Plenty of squads were there to join you.

Kylie wasn’t just stellar to listen to though, as she came out with costume changes and interacted with the crowd throughout the show, pulling off a slick performance.

That, along with her array of brilliant dancers in throwback costumes that perfectly fit the 1970s theme of this year’s Dubai Rugby Sevens, meant the crowd was having a ball of a time. She knows how to Whatever you were there for, one thing’s for sure talk to her fans, too, getting everyone hyped for an – we were all there for Kylie, and she finished off the upcoming tune or simply saying hello to a few young Friday (December 6) in grand style. ‘uns in the crowd. « We love you Kylie! » was a fairly standard chant echoing throughout The Sevens stadium, a perfect venue with plenty of space for crowds to boogie the Kylie Minogue way. And why wouldn’t we? With big hits including « Can’t Get You Out Of My Head », « Get Outta My Way », and a brilliant merge between « Shocked » and « Step Back In Time », crowds definitely had their nostalgia quota.

Getting out was less smooth, with nearly 20,000 people to take home near the same time, it wasn’t the fastest process, but those staying were rewarded with top tunes. As a fun event all-round, Kylie was a highlight of the whole thing. We’ll be feeling the locomotion for days to come.

GOLDEN TOUR : THE DVD AND DOUBLE DISCS ARE AVAILABLE ! Yay ! We’ve been waiting for this for a long time, and after having had several teasings, the « Golden Tour » in DVD (and double CD) was finally released on December 6th, and is now in your hands (or under your Christmas tree). We thought we’d take this opportunity to talk about it a little and give you our point of view.

It’s been a while since we all pre-ordered our DVD, now it’s finally in our hands! Two versions were available, a classic, white version (which is divided into several parts inside and is squareshaped) and a deluxe version, which is black (and rectangle, like a book), which was sold-out before it was even released. The first good point for me is the visual, which is a drawing and reminiscent of the poster of the movie « The Good, The Bad and the Ugly », which inspired Kylie for the song « Golden ». When we discover the CDs and DVD, these also include painting-like drawings, with striking visual elements from this tour, including the Shelby 68’. A small booklet accompanies each package, with photos made by the official photographers of the tour. To be honest, we are not really fans of the design which doesn’t enhance the pics, and we would have liked a little more exclusive content. We noticed a mistake on the standard edition on the CD setlist, « Slow / Being Boiled » being noted « Slow / Being Bolied ». Speaking about the CDs, we listened to the live on Spotify first and we actually thought that we

had a problem, but apparently not because it’s the same on the CDs... Some tracks are much louder than others, on some songs we hardly hear her voice, there are times when Kylie speaks super loud all of a sudden so we have to turn the volume down. Then when she sings it’s too low, you have to put the volume back up, then back down again… In short, we’re a bit disappointed with the audio quality, especially if we consider that non Kylie fans (who don’t buy the DVD) listen to it as it is, on Spotify or whatever platform, well, it doesn’t do Kylie’s image any good… It’s really a shame when you know how she sings live and the great voice she has…

that my TV had actually froze. However, the way the show was filmed and the editing are well done, and allows us to see the concert from different perspectives, which is really interesting. We did note small « mistakes » though on some tracks (including « The One »), Kylie is filmed from very close up and we can even see the speaker... which is, let’s admit it, not great.

Now let’s talk about the DVD. I must admit that the first excerpts I saw on the singer’s YouTube channel didn’t really convince me. I didn’t really like the smoky effect on the images, which aged the concert. We can see this effect sometimes on the DVD, but in a rather light way (not as much as I had imagined). The slow-motion effect is a little too present for my taste, especially on « All The Lovers » and on the confetti launch. I had the impression that I’d sat on the remote control and

Despite the fact that we are disappointed on certain points (we can’t always be happy about everything!), overall the DVD is pleasant to watch and reminds us good memories. We would have liked a little more work on the design of the booklet (and more exclusive photos) but the big disappointment will remain the sound of the CDs which is also available on streaming platforms... And what about you, what are your thoughts? Tell us everything on our social networks!

41 www.kylie-world.com

The bonus section, well, it’s a short 5-minute report with members of Kylie’s team, musicians and dancers, who talk about the singer. No long documentary on the behind the scenes of the tour unfortunately…

more info on saara aalto’s cd

W

e talked about it in our last edition of The Kylie Times, Kylie wrote a song for Finnish singer and songwriter Saara Aalto called « Every Christmas Day ». We knew it was going to feature in an EP called « Fairytale », well now it’s been released lovers! Actually, Saara has released two versions of her EP: a Finnish version, which was released earlier this month, and of course the International version which was released recently. You can listen to both versions on more or less all the usual platforms.

KYLIE at the premiere of the movie last christmas

O

n Monday, November 11th it was the premiere of the movie « Last Christmas » at BFI Southbank in London, and Kylie was there. She appeared wearing a pretty long pink dress by Erdem on a carpet that was for once not red, but blue, with many Christmas trees and some fake snow decor to be in the theme. The actresses of the film, Emilia Clarke and Emma Thompson also braved the cold to go to the premiere of their movie. Our Australian was also photographed next to Paul Feig, the director of the movie. Released in several countries, this film tells the story of Kate (played by Emilia Clarke) who takes a series of bad decisions and wanders in London to the sound of bells hanging on her elf boots, the only job she managed to get in a Christmas shop. That’s why she can’t believe it when she meets Tom (Henry Golding) who seems to see in her much more than she lets appear. While the city is adorned with its finery for the holiday season, nothing seemed to predispose them to start a relationship. But sometimes, just let the magic of Christmas work, open your heart and believe it... A good Christmas movie to look forward to before D-Day!

It’s a bit strange because the International version contains six tracks but the Finnish one contains a lot more. Saara performed « Every Christmas Day » during her « Fairytale Live » show at the London venue Under The Bridge for the first time on October 29th. If you’re curious you can go check it out on YouTube.

weekly special christmas dazzling

e mentionned it too last month, Kylie was on the cover of the Weekly Special (Christmas Dazzling) magazine. If some collectors have managed to find it, for those who weren’t able to get the magazine don’t panic: you did not miss much. There is only one page that is dedicated to our Australian, in an article gathering all the moments which have marked the magazine’s journalists. « When the stars make us shed a tear » is the title of the article, and it’s a review of all the moments when the stars moved us. For Kylie, it is her performance at Glastonbury that is mentioned (a few years after having to cancel it because of the reasons we all know). 42 www.kylie-world.com

kylie back to the studio

n November 19th, Daniel H. Davidsen, a guitarist, songwriter and producer from Denmark, posted a photo of himself and Peter Wallevik (another producer and songwriter) in the studio on his social media, alongside Kylie. It’s in the suburbs of London, at theMetropolis Studios that the session took place, and if the names of these producers may not ring a bell, they are however not unknown people! Daniel Davidsen worked with Kylie in 2010 on « Get Outta My Way » and « Go Hard Or Go Home », in 2014 for « Kiss Me Once » on « Million Miles » and « Sexy Love » or on « Golden » with the track « Love ». He has also collaborated with many other artists, including Olly Murs, Little Mix and Sigala. Peter Wallevik wrote « Get Outta My Way » and « Love », and also wrote songs for Olly Murs, Little Mix and Alesso. Kylie confirmed at the beginning of November that she was working on a new album, and these photos in the studio confirm that indeed, she is recording new songs for it!

kylie in the Lord of the Rings ?!

n December 5th, the French TV Channel « France 3 » broadcast the 2001 film « The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring ». You’re thinking, « Yeah and so ? What’s that got to do with Kylie ? ». Well on that same day, French TV magazine Télé 7 jours wrote a small article informing us that Kylie almost played the role of Galadriel! Yes, you read that right. We’d never heard of this! Here’s what they tell us: « To save the world from an all-powerful evil force, a group of brave adventurers must destroy a ring at the very place of its creation. Among their allies they can count on the only female character in this saga: the magical Galadriel, played by Cate Blanchett. A role which was first proposed to a popstar... It is Kylie Minogue who was meant to play Galadriel, lady of Lórien. A marketing idea of the producers. But the idea was strongly rejected by New Zealander Peter Jackson, because of Kylie’s small height (1m52). As Cate Blanchett’s 1.74m brings her closer to the elf’s slender figure ». 43 www.kylie-world.com

n the occasion of the release of the reissue of her best-of, Kylie was interviewed on the Graham Norton show. The opportunity for her to also perform one of the tracks of this album, « Slow ». However it wasn’t the usual studio version of the song that she did: for the first time on TV, she sang the Slow / Fashion mash-up which was performed during the Summer Tour. In a short (amazing) dress signed Balmain, the singer delivered a very sexy performance - which is quite usual on this song - only on a small podium accompanied by her dancers. After this incredible performance, we must admit that we would like a studio version of this track! What about you ?

e had already touched-base on this topic in our summer 2019 edition of our magazine, Kylie has donated a signed pair of one of her Jimmy Choo stilettos to the « Small Steps Project » which is a humanitarian organisation and UK registered charity supporting children and their families on rubbish dumps, for their « Celebrity Shoe Auction ». Kylie had worn the pair on the Graham Norton Show. This auction isn’t new as this year it was its tenth year! This particular auction was implemented to raise funds for barefoot children « to take small steps off landfill sites where they eke out a survival from recycling scraps ». Due to a record breaking public response this year, Small Steps even gave everyone an extra 24 hours to bid on these items. Kylie wasn’t the only person to participate in this project, in fact numerous famous people did, such as Annie Lenox, Cate Blanchett, Chris Martin, Sir Tom Jones, Susan Sarandon, Rita Ora, Rod Stewart, Brian May, Bryan Cranston (I love this guy), Craig David, Kate Moss, Katy Perry, to name just a few of them. In the end, Kylie’s shoes were sold for £2,222.00 on November 25th.

And you probably know them because they collaborated with Kylie on several projects. If you are in Paris, you can discover their art from November 20th, 2019 to February 23rd, 2020 at the Philharmonie de Paris. This exhibition explores their relationship with music, its codes, its symbols. Accompanied by a playlist composed by the artists echoing each painting, like a giant jukebox, it shows visitors unpublished documents, installations of memorabilia and other relics from their workshop of illusionists to tell and understand how their « factory » works. The entrance is 9 euros, and we will make sure we tell you all about this exhibition and the work of the two artists in the upcoming months!

hane MacGowan from The Pogues wants Kylie Minogue to perform the song « Fairytale of New York » with Robbie Williams - after Britney Spears said no. « Fairytale of New York » is a song written by Jem Finer and Shane MacGowan and recorded by their band the Pogues, featuring singer-songwriter Kirsty MacColl on vocals. The song is an Irish folk-style ballad and was written as a duet, with the Pogues’ singer MacGowan taking the role of the male character and MacColl the female character. It was originally released as a single on November 23rd 1987, and has been since then, regularly voted « Greatest Ever Christmas song ». A number of artists have previously made their own versions of the song, and this time, it seems that Robbie Williams wants to do a cover of the song! Because it’s a duet, he has asked Britney Spears to sing it along with him and… well, she declined the offer. Robbie declared : « I asked Britney Spears to duet with me on « Fairytale of New York ». She said no. What a lovely story. She’s not working right now. She’s having a rest. Maybe it’ll happen in the future ». Shane MacGowan (The Pogues), 61, would like Kylie to fill-in for Kirsty MacColl if the track goes ahead. His wife Victoria, even told the press : « Maybe Kylie would be better ? She’s amazing. She sang with Shane before and he loves her ». The couple were also grateful to Robbie for trying to make the Christmas collaboration happen, describing themselves as big fans. She also said « We love his « Angels » song and we used to have a naked picture of him in our bathroom but it got stolen ». (Ok, that’s a bit weird… not that it was stolen - even though that’s also a bit weird - but I mean, having a naked Robbie picture in his/her bathroom, like what the…?). We really don’t know (yet) if Kylie has or will agree to singing this duet with Robbie, but we would really like this collaboration to happen!

kylie aT THE british fashion awards

n Monday December 2nd, the British Fashion Awards took place at the iconic venue, the Royal Albert Hall in London, UK. And as you know, if we’re talking about it, it’s because Kylie was there, along with other stars such as Donatella Versace, Rihanna, Cate Blanchett, Naomi Campbell, Emilia Clarke and Julia Roberts. The Fashion Awards is an annual celebration to recognise creativity and innovation in fashion, and celebrate exceptional individuals whose imagination and creativity have broken new ground in fashion globally over the past 12 months, and the brands and businesses that have transformed the possibilities of fashion today. The Fashion Awards are a fundraiser for the BFC charities. The BFC is a not-for-profit organisation, whose aim is to support sustainable growth for the sector, with wide ranging activities which include charitable initiatives that support educational programmes and scholarships through to financial and mentoring awards for emerging talent. Kylie arrived at the event looking amazing (and bright!). She was wearing Christopher Kane clothes (a bright yellow frock dress and black double breasted blazer featuring a string of diamantes and large silk lapels), Gianvito Rossi stilettos and Boodles jewellery. Some magazines loved the look (Vogue: « she was resplendent in retina-rocking Christopher Kane neon yellow lace »), but a couple considered it was a fashion fail. During the evening, she sat between Andrew Scott and Alexa Chung (she shared pics on Instagram) and, she presented « The Designers’ Designer Award » to… (guess who?) Christopher Kane! We can only wonder if it’s a coincidence that she was wearing clothes designed by him that night. Whatever, we loved her look !

T

oo cute moment of the month : Australian actress Rose Byrne, who played in X-Men, posted on social media a photo of her younger self, sitting on a bed and in the pic she is surrounded by posters of Kylie Minogue. She had already talked about her obsession with the singer in the past and posted this pic with just the caption: « Big fan @kylieminogue ». She told Variety magazine : « I am from Australia and I grew up in the ‘90s with Kylie Minogue. She was my pop idol. I never got backstage. I did meet her 20 years later. She couldn’t have been lovelier. I was rendered back to my 10-year-old self ». In 2017, she told The Daily Telegraph that she « wanted to be Kylie Minogue »: « I’ve spent much of my life wanting to be Kylie ». In another interview, this time with the Guardian in 2014, she said she admired the singer’s courage when she had to face cancer. « My dad took me to five of her concerts by the time I was 11, and a few years ago I did a sixth ». Kylie commented on the publication saying : « Oh Lady ROSE !!! You have stolen my heart with this! I’m gonna cover my walls too. With YOU ». And then Kylie posted an incredible photoshopped pic which all designers must be jealous about now... We let you admire…

e’ve been talking about it for several months, and now it is finally available for you to buy since December 9th, 2019: The documentary « Mystify: Michael Hutchence » can now be found in DVD and Blu-Ray formats in all good shops and online of course. The DVD costs around £10.99 and the Blu-Ray £22.99.

U

nfortunately, the month of November also brought us some sad news. On Sunday 24th of November Australian-born author, critic, broadcaster and poet Clive James passed away. After being diagnosed with leukaemia, kidney failure and lung disease almost ten years ago, James spent much of his final years writing about his terminal illness. A private funeral attended by family and close friends took place in the chapel at Pembroke College, Cambridge on Wednesday 27th November. In 1995 Clive had interviewed Kylie and at the end of the interview, both of them had ended up dancing and it was really funny. On the same day Clive was buried, Kylie posted a picture of her with Clive on Instagram with this caption : « RIP #CliveJames. What a spirit you were! I remember our interview so well. I can’t remember half of what we were referring to (!) but your charm, wit and kindness made it an absolute joy. Thanks for being my dance partner! Love to your family ».

Nominated for Best Documentary at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival, « Mystify » is written and directed by Richard Lowenstein (« Autoluminescent » ; « Rowland S Howard », « Ecco Homo »), who also directed the majority of both INXS and Michael’s music videos and the 1986 feature film, Dogs in Space, in which Michael played the lead. It is an intimate narrative portrait, imbued with authenticity, warmth and humour, of the internationally renowned INXS frontman, Michael Hutchence. Michael came to epitomise the very definition of leather clad sexually magnetic rock front man, whilst underneath it all he was a poetic, multifaceted and intensely sensitive man who struggled with the idea of success and the creative limits of pop. Extraordinary archive footage, personal home movies and intimate insights from Michael’s friends, lovers, band-members, family, collaborators and Hutchence himself guide us through a trajectory from unconventional fractured childhood to a charismatic, turbulent and ultimately tragic public stardom. And of course, as we all know, it contains super rare and exclusive footage of him and Kylie. So if you haven’t already, go and get your copy Lovers!

inally ! After more than 10 years of absence in Latin America (her last tour there was the « X Tour », in 2008), Kylie has been confirmed as one of the first acts of the GRLS festival, which will take place from March 7th to 8th, in Sao Paulo. This festival wishes to highlight women so only female artists will be scheduled (Alicia Keys and Janelle Monaé are among the names announced by the rumors). Workshops and debates will also be organized. Tickets will go on sale next month! Since then, rumors have appeared on the internet that the singer will also do a Greatest Hits Tour called « Step Back In Time » in Latin America, especially in Brazil, Chile, Mexico or even Argentina... For now, no other date have been confirmed... Oh and while we’re at it, there’s other rumors going around at the moment: 1. Kylie’s « Step Back In Time » tour will also hit Australia in 2020, and 2: She may perform as an interval act on the next Eurovision. Justin Timberlake and Madonna have already done that, so after all, why not? 46 www.kylie-world.com

KYLIE THE SYMPOSIUM

O a music video for « ON OUBLIE LE RESTE »

I

nvited for the TV show « Touche Pas A Mon Poste » on French television, Jenifer promoted her track with Kylie Minogue « On Oublie Le Reste». The singer talked about their collaboration and said that Kylie was « very friendly »: « It’s a great woman who is very honest, it’s a pop icon, she’s always made me dream and I’m very flattered that she agreed to record this duet with me ». If she met her thanks to a mutual friend, it is also him who introduced her to the track: « She accepted, she liked the song. She went to the studio right away and she sang her part ». Jenifer’s music video for the single « On Oublie Le Reste » was released on December 6th, with the French singer only, who has recorded a version of her song without Kylie’s voice on it. Our Australian is therefore totally absent from the music video, whether it be on the sound or on the image, we simply see Jenifer surrounded by dancers... We are not gonna lie, we were expecting that to happen... Jenifer talked again about her duet with Kylie Minogue in an interview with PureBreak and Pure Charts. She said that when she was preparing the reissue of her album « Nouvelle Page », which she wanted to be festive, she was marked by lots of joy and encounters. About the duet she explained : « When we started thinking about the new songs, there was this chorus that kept coming back in my mind all the time. I wanted to pay tribute to a great pop artist that I admire a lot and who is, for me, the absolute pop icon and who accepted to « play the game » ». « So there was this very catchy chorus that we all know. And when we sent the song to Kylie, she liked it so much that suddenly it became a real duet and not just a participation. She wanted to sing the second verse in French (...) We didn’t record it together but it’s as if we did thanks to new technologies, we could almost record at the same time and talk to each other, see each other, and give our respective opinions to be able to make it a real duet and not to fall into this robotism that I’m always afraid of when things are done remotely ». According to Jenifer, Kylie is « an integrated person, who works hard and does things properly. She’s a fighter too, I really admire her for the woman that she is, she is extremely brave ». Information for the fans, Jenifer « hopes to perform this duet on stage one day! ». 47 www.kylie-world.com

n November 15th and 16th, an International Conference was held at Maynooth University in Ireland and its topic was non-other than our favourite Australian singer! Despite 80 million record sales worldwide and an enduring career in which she constantly reinvents herself, Minogue is sometimes dismissed as frivolous, but she is a fascinating topic. The longevity of her career invites consideration, especially in a music industry that prizes youth. Important too is her status as a gay icon, her identity as cancer survivor, and her capacity for artistic reinvention. Think Kylie and one thinks of all those songs and videos – it’s in this space that Minogue has allowed herself to be fashioned into « Kylie », the forename-only designation that blends into a brand. Beyond the choreographies of Kylie the pop star, and Minogue’s careful crafting of her public image, the conference considered the songs and videos themselves as forms of storytelling. Kylie’s catalogue often engages listeners on sensual and emotional levels. « How do you describe a feeling? » whispers Minogue at the start of « In My Arms », a French electro pop themed track from her 10th studio album « X ». The socalled post-cancer album was criticised as insufficiently personal by some reviewers. But this overlooks the album’s « poptimism » : the songs convey a joie de vivre that in many ways epitomises Minogue’s artistic appeal and apparent personal resilience. In short, academics analyzed and assessed the life and times of Kylie Minogue. Speakers addressed Kylie’s legacy in relation to other Aussie female performers such as Olivia Newton John, her emergence as a gay icon against the backdrop of Thatcher’s Britain and her contribution to breast cancer awareness. Scholars highlighted Kylie’s distinctive but often underrated visual and vocal aesthetics. Apologies Lovers, we weren’t able to attend the symposium, so we can’t give you any more details (for now at least…). Let’s hope one day we’ll know more about the discussions that took place over the two days. Isa and Laeti, Nov/Dec 2K19

a special program on KYLIE

B

y now, you’ve heard a lot about this show, which will air on Channel 4 at 10:30 p.m. on Christmas day and will be hosted by Alan Carr: Kylie’s Secret Night. This show brought together many invited fans for an evening based on an Act tribute around Kylie, without really knowing more. It was recorded at the Rivoli Ballroom during almost 5.30 hours, and on TV you will be able to find an hour and a half of sketches, games and emotional moments between the fans and the singer. You have undoubtedly already seen some snippets on Internet, in particular scenes in the taxi where anonymous people (but fans!) share a car with the singer who has to repeat what Alan Carr says to her in the earpiece (we all want to hear her new single « Spank Me Harder Harder »!). So the BBC cast that you saw this summer was definitely for this show. Most of the people selected have really touching stories or do absolutely amazing things using Kylie’s music to spread good humor and joy around them, a message that is also conveyed by Kylie. In particular, she visited Simon Grainger, who uses the singer’s music in an adult choir in which people have autism and learning disabilities, and met a young boy we have already told you about, who is a kindergarten teacher and has a class called the « Minogue » class. Between laughter and tears, this show pays tribute to the devoted fans of the singer who have real projects and who are often in the shadow. And we promise you, you will love it! And we’ll talk about it more at length next month for sure! Check it out on December 25th at 10:30 p.m ! After the show, you will be able to find the first television broadcast of the « Golden Tour » on Channel 4, while it is already available for streaming on the channel’s on-demand platform since December 13th! Kylie Minogue said: « I had so much fun every night performing for everyone on the « Golden Tour ». I’m so excited that my UK fans will be able to watch the full concert at their fingertips on All 4. I’m looking forward to being able to relive it all over again! ». Charlie Palmer, Managing Editor of All 4 said: « Her Glastonbury « Legends » slot made 2019 very much the year of Kylie, so we’re delighted that we can finish the year by giving the gift of the « Golden Tour », in full and uninterrupted. It’s a truly fantastic addition to All 4, and a chance to see Kylie doing what she does best » 48 www.kylie-world.com

ndeed, it seems that in 2017 the Ashley Wilde Group (British textile company which works on Kylie’s « Kylie at Home » range) alleged that BCPL, the manufacturer which produces Caprice Bourret’s Home range, had duplicated one of its ben linen products. By the way, if you have no idea who Caprice is, she’s an American businesswoman, model, actress and TV personality, who lives in London where she runs her company « By Caprice », which first focused on lingerie before also focusing on homeware along with baby products. Ashley Wilde said that the range had infringed copyright of its design of the 20142015 « Evangeline set » with Caprice’s 2017 « Armore » range, because both linen sets featured scallop-styled pleats in repeating horizontal rows (and the size of the pleats and spacing between them are the same). It was made official on November 26th, Ashley Wilde has failed to convince the High court that BCPL copied the design, even though it was created 3 years before Caprice’s bed linen. The court indeed found similarities between the products but considered they were just as likely to be a coincidence rather than a copy. It concluded that the shared features of the duvet covers were not sufficiently close, numerous or extensive enough to rule in favor of a copyright infringement. While the scallop-style pleat design was not « commonplace », it accepted evidence that the motif has been « widely used in textiles for centuries » and was « having a moment in the fashion and interior design industries in early 2016 ». The judge even added : « If I then cast in my mind over the differences I have identified which are extensive and, I consider, material, I consider they do indicate an independent source and so rebut any inference of copying. That is sufficient to dispose of the claim ». Isa and Laeti, Nov/Dec 2K19

kylie and mates

B

eginning of December, a picture of Kylie in a magazine started to be all over social media, in which we see Kylie sat down in a posh room and posh chair. She’s looking fab and dressed really classy (as usual really), and on the pic it states « Kylie and Mates. Right before the Queen’s speech, on ITV », and now there’s even a big banner with the same pic and text in some places in the UK such as in London Waterloo station! Some small adverts can actually also be seen on UK TV about this « event » now, one of them showing Kylie sitting down and waiting, and a voice over saying to her « Ok Kylie, not long now »… Of course, Kylie’s fanbase is wondering what is going on here. Is Kylie going to do an actual speech or just a quick Christmas message, who are the « mates », is she going to have her own chat or variety show, is it an ad for her recent Greatest Hits album? The excitement got even worse when Kylie shared the same picture on Instagram on December 18th with this caption: « Only one week till Christmas, lovers! Don’t forget to tune in to ITV just before the Queen’s speech for my special message! #ad ».

Record Redux Series

L

overs! We have found the perfect Christmas present for you (even if it’s too late to buy it before Xmas now): the Kylie Minogue (Record Redux Series) book. It was written by author and columnist Quentin Harrison, who works for Albumism. If you read our focuses on Kylie’s singles, you’ve seen his name before for sure. From what we’ve seen so far, we can already tell you that the book looks absolutely GORGEOUS! It is available to purchase physically on Amazon (it costs £25,11/30,94€) or digitally here: https://bit. ly/2sptn6X. It is Quentin’s fifth book as he has already written Record Redux books about The Spice Girls, Carly Simon, Donna Summer and Madonna. There will be 14 books in total in the series. According to Amazon, this is the first time that Kylie’s entire discography is discussed at length:

According to some people, it’s going to be the latest international campaign from Tourism Australia, entitled « Live our Philausophy » that we have already talked about in a previous edition of The Kylie Times. Costing $38m and featuring scores of celebrities over the campaign’s lifetime (Kylie, Chris Hemsworth and Paul Hogan are names we’ve read), it is targeted at potential visitors from North America, Europe and Asia, and plays on the idea that the Australian way of life is as attractive to tourists as the country itself. If we look closely at the full pic, there are pictures of koalas here and there so it could be that… However… recently, Kylie shared another pic on social media, one of her now dressed as Charlene in Neighbours, in dungarees and all, about to fix a Shelby ’68, and we also know for sure that the « Slow » video has been refilmed, and we really wonder how any of this could be linked to a tourism ad (and I mean, a tourism ad before the Queen’s speech doesn’t really make sense does it)? The only thing we know for sure is it can only last 5 minutes maximum, which is not enough for a talk show or something like that…The ITV official announcement just states « Join Kylie and some of her mates just before the Queen’s speech for a very special Christmas message ». So, let’s wait and see Lovers ! (But we have to admit that because she is our Queen, we wish she could be the one doing the speech).

« Record Redux: Kylie Minogue thoroughly reviews and highlights Minogue’s impressive discography that has spanned over three decades. Synopses of each single and album! Full color photography of all singles and albums!... ». Apparently the book also gives statistics. During an interview with projectq.us, Quentin was asked « Why Kylie Minogue? », and here is what he replied : « Her career took a different trajectory than most. She started out as an actress, then she transitioned into being a pre-fab pop star who then took the reins herself. She is more than a dance/pop kewpie doll. There’s a lot of artistry there. A theme that emerged with the Kylie book is « subversive ». She changed the direction of her career. She learned to make accessible pop music and then she flipped the script and made some subversive pop music right there in plain sight. There’s something to discover in her music ». Of course, I’ve ordered my copy and I just can’t wait to receive it! Be sure to read our next edition, we’ll be talking about it for sure!

k, so this is not really « news » but we wanted to tell you about it ‘cause we find it soooo beautiful ! On November 28th, an Australian artist called Paul « Franko » Franklin posted on his Facebook (« Franklin Art Studio ») a painting he has done of Kylie, and believe me, it’s REALLY worth seeing, it’s just marvelous. We also loved the caption : « Oh my, I am so busy... And I do have to tell you something, and I may lose some of you with this admission. I am a huge Kylie fan. I have seen her in concert four times, and I would see her every year, back to back....!!!!... At any arena show I’ll be only happy to pay all of my childrens’ pocket money for front row seats. Her concerts to me are simply « joy ». FINALLY managed to get to this massive piece!! Better the devil you know right!!! The only woman I would swap Wendy for LOL... BUT wait wait wait... That goes both ways. The only girl she would swap me for :) hugs! ». If you have a bit of time, we suggest you go and take a look at his website, because this guy’s work is truly amazing and deserves to be seen! https://www.franklinartstudio.com.au 50 www.kylie-world.com

Kylie in the press • Nov / Dec

50 MINUTES INSIDE NOVEMBer 2nd, 2019 FRANCE On November 2nd, a small documentary on Kylie was broadcast on the French channel TF1 following the release of Jenifer’s single, « On Oublie Le Reste », which she put her voice on. Entitled « Kylie Minogue, the survivor », this story takes a look back on the singer’s career and of course on her breast cancer. If we knew most of the information already, some testimonials, especially from some of her ex-dancers were recorded. Here is a small summary of it all. The documentary opens with the small video of Kylie where she speaks French and announces her collaboration with Jenifer. It is described as a « surprising » duet (at least we’re not the only ones to say it!), Kylie sings in French in it and the song uses the « la la la » part of « Can’t Get You Out Of My Head ». More radiant than ever, Kylie Minogue seems to have managed to overcome all the hardships she has gone through in recent years.

« She has been through terrible heartbreaks, tragedies, bereavements, cancer, big professional disappointments and she always came back with a smile and with success » Sophie Rosemont, Rolling Stone

« She’s a survivor, coming back to the front as she did after everything she went through, she really is a survivor » Mike Spencer, Spinning Around’s producer

Kylie confirms her status as a pop star, who since 30 years has made the world dance to the rhythm of her hits. They showed excerpts of « Locomotion » and « Can’t Get You Out Of My Head ».

« Kylie Minogue is still the princess of pop, that’s for sure, no one can take this crown » Michelle Johnson, Tempus Magazine

On November 27th, 1997, Kylie went to the funeral of her first big love, Michael Hutchence. We 51 www.kylie-world.com

can see some images of the singer during this very personal moment. Karine Hernandez, head editor for Voici magazine, says: « She really came dressed as if she were mourning her husband, she has a black veil, she is all in black, so there is a bit of a formal side, she is dressed like a widow ». In the early 90s the two Australian singers had a passionate romance. « He was a bad boy, a rock’n’roll icon. She was a little ingenue who was just beginning her career. He gave her confidence, they had this passionate relationship, he was her first love ».

says Michelle Johnson. The singer is at that time quite fragile, because it’s been 10 years since she hasn’t released any « hits ». « Her latest albums wanted to get away from sweet pop to go to something more experimental and the audience didn’t follow that, the critics either ». says Karine Hernandez. Kylie then decides to go for broke and change her record company. « She was singing better than I could imagine and she was very talented. When we recorded the track I said right away: we’re holding a hit ». says Mike Spencer, the « Spinning Around » producer. Kylie introduced the song on June 26th, 2000 and sold over 300,000 copies of the single. She regained her status of pop star in Australia and England. « The music video had a huge success and was on repeat on all music channels, everyone fell in love with Kylie Minogue or discovered her (for those who did not know her in the 80s) ». says Sophie Rosemont. Ambitious, Kylie now wants to charm America. Her label offers her a song that could make her career even more phenomenal. Sean Smith, biographer, says: « She listened to the track for the first time at Parlophone’s London office, and she loved it. She immediately said: I have to do it, this song is for me, I have to record it! ». Kylie recorded « Can’t Get You Out Of My Head » and her sexier image in the music video drew immediate attention. An experience that the singer had talked about on TV in 2012, during the promo for her album « The Abbey Road Sessions » : « The song was incredible but the music video propelled it even higher. The hairstyle, the makeup, the costume, everything was perfect ». Sophie Rosemont also talks about Kylie’s incredible jumpsuit which could have looked really vulgar if it wasn’t Kylie that was wearing it: white, low cut to the waist, whilst Kylie sways in a glamorous way. In a word, it’s iconic. The track reached number 1 in 40 countries which gave Kylie her star status back, just like in the beginning of her career.

Kylie Minogue: The diva next door The Australian singer has masterfully cultivated the image of the Garbo of Pop, living by the old school maxim of « never complain, never explain ». BY JENNIFER GANNON (IRISHTIMES.COM)

The reason why Kylie Minogue has such a beautiful skin at 51 The singer shared her routine to have a beautiful complexion and far from sophisticated treatments, it adapts to all budgets. HOLA.COM

Use sunscreen daily, cleanse with a chiffon cloth and sometimes consult a dermatologist. Her first piece of advice echoes the opinion of all specialists who consider the sun’s rays as the main causes of premature aging of the skin. As Dr. Carlos Morales explained: « We must avoid sun exposure without wearing SPF 50 creams all year round, and on days with maximum sunlight, use a hat and glasses ». Her second secret is cleanliness, another gesture that avoids the premature appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, spots or a dull, textured complexion. « I remove make-up with a muslin... I always take off my makeup, I wear it for a long time to work ». the artist told a British TV show. Muslin sheets are also used to wrap newborns because they are soft, breathable and lightweight, the three qualities that Minogue uses to remove leftover products instead of an ordinary towel. On the occasion of the premiere of « Last Christmas », Kylie Minogue was seen yesterday in London. No doubt the artist belongs to this group of fabulous beauties at 50 years old. Jennifer Lopez is one of those at the top of this list and has internationalized her best anti-aging tricks to her most powerful routines. But as we say, it’s not the only one. With Jennifer Aniston, Sandra Bullock or Salma Hayek, the pop diva also seems to have stopped the time. A few months ago, the singer revealed her beauty routine, a ritual based on three golden rules that she has trusted for years.

And to finish off, the Australian emphasizes the importance of consulting a dermatologist sometimes to examine the skin and discover the program of care that suits the skin best. For her, treatments rich in collagen are a fundamental pillar of her beauty ritual and she combines them with the products she uses and in the form of nutricosmetics (a cocktail of good ingredients for the dermis taken orally). In short: wear sunscreen, remove makeup daily and find the formula that best suit your skin. This is how Kylie Minogue turned fifty into the new forty.

Lost Hit: Kylie Minogue’s « Every Little Part Of Me » Should Have Been A Single BY MIKE WASS (IDOLATOR.COM)

When it comes to maddening singles choices, Kylie Minogue is a repeat offender. The Gays (™) are still fuming that « Better Than Today » was released as the third single from « Aphrodite » ahead of literal classics like « Closer » and « Cupid Boy », while « I Was Gonna Cancel » remains a dark time for the fandom. To make matters worse, the pop icon has a habit of turning single-worthy gems into bonus tracks. « Tightrope » is a hill that I’m more than willing to die on, « Rippin’ Up the Disco » deserved better and don’t even get me started on « Heartstrings ». As such, it shouldn’t have come as too much surprise that the bonus tracks on Golden are essential listening. One, in particular, rivals « Lost Without You » as the album’s hidden treasure (or lost hit). « Every Little Part Of Me » finds the perfect middle ground between country and Kylie’s trademark dance-pop. It’s also deceptively profound. While Sky Adams’ giddy production is a flurry of syn-

ths, the lyrics are about reaching the point where you’re grown and confident enough to wear your baggage like a badge of honor. « When I love, I come with scars », Kylie begins the dizzying bop. « I come with more than enough of those things that you don’t think you want ». The legendary diva realizes that all of her emotional bruises shaped who she is today. « Every time I fell, heaven up to hell », she sings on the instantly catchy chorus. « Baby you’re discovering that if you wanna love me, you got to love every little part of me ». Thematically, this is a refreshingly mature. Sonically, it wouldn’t sound out of place on Light Years. I’m not sure if « Every Little Part Of Me » would have cut through the noise, but it surely would have stood a better chance than songs like « A Lifetime To Repair » and « Sincerely Yours ».

Interviews • Lovin Dubaï

LOVIN DUBAI november 2nd, 2019 DUBAI On the occasion of her coming to Dubai for a performance at the city’s Rugby Sevens, Kylie Minogue granted an interview to Casey from « Lovin Dubai » on the upcoming show, her work on a new album (yes, she has finally confirmed it !) and her concert at Glastonbury last July.

KM: Hello! C: Hi Kylie! KM: Hi Casey! C: Yeah hi! Thank you so much for the time, I can’t believe I’m actually going to talk to you! KM: Awww that’s nice! C: So thank you for the time. We’re massive fans here in the offices, so in the questions there are going to be a couple from fans here. So to kick things off, have you ever attended a Rugby Sevens event ? KM: No I haven’t so I’m really excited about this! C: I’m so excited, there’s an amazing atmosphere and at the Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens it’s a super fun crowd and I know they’re going to love you. KM: Ooooh so good! C: Can you give them any idea of what songs you’re planning to perform ? KM: As many hits as I can fit into 90 minutes. C: Ok so you have 90 minutes. Just one song that we can look forward to? KM: « Spinning Around », « Can’t Get You Out Of My Head », « On A Night Like This »… You know I’ll try and cover as much ground as possible. C: Amazing. What’s your most memorable fan moment? KM: Oh you know what ? It’s been a while… It was pretty much early days for me and I met a couple of the guys from U2 and had a cup of tea with them in Dublin with my mom… I was just so young and I wouldn’t have been very confident. I’m trying to pluck random things from my mind, there’s that and… You know just meeting some people, so many people that I absolutely love, or being completely bowled over that someone has heard of me or might like what I

do. Then to just completely non-celebrity, non-fanatical related moments that are just human moments I get. I was in a cab a few months ago and the driver told me about his wife and her journey with cancer and really just touching moments where we feel like we are connected although we’ve never met. So there’s all sort of those amazing moments. I can honestly say it’s those moments, whether it’s one to one or it’s with a crowd of thousands of people, it’s that connection that’s the magical part of it for me. C: Have you ever been to Dubaï ? KM: Oh yeah I’ve been to Dubaï a few times, I’ve had some really fun shows there and fun times, doing the usual tour things but I love visiting and I can’t wait to come and see you in December. C: Are you a fan of Middle Eastern food ? KM: Yeah. I mean YES. The coffee and the dates. The coffee, the arabic coffee and the dates. C: Ok, you’ve produced an incredible number of hits like over the years. Do you need to look for inspiration with each new album or do you find it flows naturally ? KM: I still need to, but I will look for inspiration or inspirational hits. I think with most albums - well it’s often that in the early days I literally would turn up and sing a song - but as time has gone on and my career has developed and I have developed as well, it normally transpires that there’s a bit of searching at the start of an album and almost going in sometimes and saying « well we don’t really know what we are looking for. We are looking for this sound or a hit » but you’ve got to start somewhere, so just doing some song writing and eventually something will crystallize and we’ll say « that sounds good », « that

sounds fresh » or « that sounds interesting ». Once you’ve got that key song or sound, you go from there and sometimes where you end up is so far from that starting point that you’ve moved on from it. Yeah it’s so interesting making an album beyond the creative process. C: Are you working on any new music ? KM: I have started working on the next album and I’ll be doing more of that next year. C: That’s amazing to hear. KM: It’s been fantastic that this year has been… I’ve started this year finishing my Golden Tour in Australia and then did the Summer Show, mostly around the UK and some European dates and most importantly Glastonbury ! C: Yeah of course ! KM: Which is more or less the show I’ll be bringing to you. C: Oh my god this is amazing. KM: So it has been fantastic to know, in my mind, that I’ve got those little other songs just bubbling away in the background. That process has started, which is good for me when I was basically doing a retrospective greatest hits tour, to know that there’s something else in the pipeline. Thanks for asking and we’ll see what happens next year.

C: Very good! And so from Neighbours to unbelievable iconic pop star royalty you’ve had one of the most interesting careers, could you name a highlight or a couple ? KM: You ask tricky questions! Look, Glastonbury definitely. Glastonbury meant so many different things, emotional level and a very realistic life level. I was meant to headline in 2005 and I had to cancel because of illness. So that was amazing, just to have 31 years of music and beyond the music memories with that sea of people, I’ve never seen so many people in my entire life! C : I could only imagine the atmosphere was just… KM: I had to double check « Have I ever seen that many people ? » and I hadn’t, it was extraordinary. There’s this other highlight thinking back which is the Sydney Olympics, the closing ceremony in 2000 which was pretty awesome. I think front runner at the minute is Glastonbury. C: Amazing. What advice would you tell yourself during your time at Neighbours? KM: Wow! Well I was really happy at Neighbours so I don’t think I really needed to… Normally I just say: « Everything’s gonna work out, don’t stress so much » but I don’t think I was too stressed back then, I think that came later. So my advice to myself would be « keep a diary » because I think of all those little tiny memories that it would be nice to remember. Yeah « just enjoy », which I did. C: What made you say yes to coming to perform at the Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens ? KM: Because when I performed in Dubai before it’s been lots of fun. I’ve not been to that particular event before so I looked it up and the website looked incredible and it just looks like a fantastic event for families, I know a lot of expats fly over, people fly in from all over the world for it and it was just a yes for me! C: Amazing! I know Glastonbury has an insane crowd, but I promise you that Dubai Rugby Sevens will be just on another level! KM: Oh my god okay! C: Yeah it’s great fun, and people are dressed up in costumes. KM: Well I was already excited about it and now you have taken it to the next level so it will be really interesting! C: Ok well so that wraps up the questions and can’t wait to see you at the Sevens. KM: I’ll see you all there, thanks so much ! C: Thank you. Bye bye !

Interviews • Radio FG

RADIO FG NOVEMBer 11th, 2019 FRANCE On the occasion of the release of her best-of album, Kylie was interviewed by Antoine Baduel of Radio FG (a French radio), in June. We haven’t spoken about it before because we had no idea this had taken place, but we found it this month, so here it is! Antoine Baduel: And tonight my guest is Kylie Minogue. More than thirty years of career, fifteen albums sold (yes he really said « 15 albums sold » - we don’t know if he wanted to say that she has done 15 albums or if he wanted to mention the number of albums she actually sold but it was super funny!), it was time

for Kylie to release a huge compilation, 42 tracks in total in « Step Back In Time - The Definitive Collection » which will be available tomorrow. But before that, I was able to meet the Australian star in London for an exclusive interview. She chose Radio FG to look back on her incredible career. The opportunity to talk about this compilation with Kylie of course, always so warm, smiling and kind and to discuss her career with her. Kylie Minogue good evening and welcome on FG, how are you? Kylie Minogue: I’m good ! AB: So Kylie, just a year ago you released a new album, « Golden » and now you’re here with this compilation « Step Back in Time ». How did the idea of this great compilation come up ? Was it a real desire for you? KM: The idea came because I’m going to do a lot of festivals this year, the biggest is Glastonbury which is really important to me.

So it seemed like it was the perfect time to do a retrospective and celebrate what is actually 30 years of sharing music with people. AB: Your career is just huge with 15 albums and many hits. So how do we choose the tracks for such a project? KM: Obviously the easiest is the biggest hits. « Locomotion », « I Should Be So Lucky », « Can’t Get You Out Of My Head » or « Spinning Around ». Then we included songs that I will not say are great hits but they have become hits somehow with my fanbase like for example « Your Disco Needs You » or « The One ». We have tried to distribute fairly over the 31-year career. But in the end it’s quite difficult to get to a double album, a double vinyl. AB: So I guess there will be a lot of concerts announced soon. We already know that there will be a date in Edinburgh but this compilation announces - I imagine - a tour to celebrate it. Can you tell us a little bit more? KM: This is the perfect time to celebrate this story and the planned shows are rather shows like « Greatest Hits Tour ». Normally with a tour like « Golden Tour », « Fever », « X » or others, you want to share songs that people are familiar with because it’s like introducing them to 64 www.kylie-world.com

the album. But here this is the history, it’s the nostalgia, it’s us. That’s why I think these are also important moments in people’s lives. And now it’s been so long since they’re going back to specific moments in the history of music. It was the end of the 80s. People think about the show Top Of The Pops or anything that was before the digital era. I hope and believe that there are many personal memories for those who listen to my old hits. AB: What can you tell us about your next live performances? For example for your shows, where do you find the inspiration? At each tour there is a huge work done especially on the whole artistic level. KM: That’s a good question. Sometimes everything works and I sometimes wonder how we managed to get everything right. Because you can have the best director, the best photo director, stylist, the best hairstyles and makeup... Sometimes they don’t all work harmoniously together. So sometimes, I think it’s that the planets are aligned or it’s just luck on my side. But yes, I really try to work with competent and pleasant people. I am very interested in the image and the video. So it’s always an interesting challenge to try to make everything perfect. Isa, Nov/Dec 2K19

AB: So it’s amazing because you have an extremely loyal audience that’s always there. I have the impression that there is a true communion between you and your audience. KM: Yes it’s really amazing. At each of my concerts I can see different generations together. People from completely different worlds. There’s so much diversity ! There’s the daughter, the mother, the grandmother, drag queens, young kids, kissing couples on songs like « All The Lovers » or « Love At First Sight ». I can see on the faces their behavior when we are playing a song. Sincerely it’s so nice to be able to feel that I have something to do with it. AB: Kylie, on this compilation there is this new song, « New York City », which was produced by DJ Fresh and since the beginning of your career you have regularly made dance music but also collaborated with different electro producers. For example, a few people know that Calvin Harris produced « In My Arms ». What is your relationship with all these electro producers? KM: I think I started with Stock Aitken Waterman between late 80s and early 90s. It was very pop but those songs were played, maybe not in the trendy clubs, but it was still very danceable songs. And maybe when I signed with the label deConstrution, it was mainly a dance label. That’s why I had a remix of the Chemical Brothers. It really opened an avenue for me. So I would say that since the period of deConstruction, something happened. And regarding Calvin Harris I will have to check but I think the session we did together was probably the first one he did for another person. You know at

the time, he was the guy who made tracks in his room. Apparently he had to stop for a drink before entering the studio. He was a little stressed. I was very lucky to work with producers and dance producers just when this style of music was starting to explode. AB: So today the « consumption » of music has changed enormously with platforms, streaming... It seems that artists must be more present, have to release more songs or post new things. Is it your impression and how do you feel about this new context? KM: It’s a complex question. I must say that ten years ago I couldn’t say that I was going to survive that because it has changed so much. It was a somewhat uncertain time and it was also an uncertain time for record companies who should have told me what is going on? Where are you with your career? And your concerts? And at that moment I think they were pretty lost too. So I had to accept it. I still feel that my audience and I still have a foothold in the old days and another foot in this new era. AB: Kylie, you have 30 years of career and success behind you. Do you look at this career with pride and optimism? Or are you rather the kind of person who always looks ahead? KM: Both I think. Normally I don’t spend too much time looking back. So this album and this project were actually much more moving than I had imagined. Because we talk about history, we talk about the greater part of my life. It’s nice to look back but I would say that I usually look forward. It’s a good time to think and listen to all the songs on this album. I obviously feel pride but 65 www.kylie-world.com

also a little embarrassment. It’s really a mix of emotions but it’s mostly gratitude. I am so grateful to have all these opportunities. The ups and downs, because even if the downs happen, well they really build a character and build you as a person. It’s a very pleasant moment. AB: You were very quickly an icon for the LGBT community. Is it important for you to participate in events like Gay Pride ? Because it should be noted that « Step Back In Time - The Definitive Collection » will be released tomorrow June 28th. And a year ago today you were at the pride concert in New York, right? KM: That’s right? Oh my God ! I made tons of Gay Pride, Mardi Gras... It’s always very nice. For me it’s just like a relationship with anyone. There has never been any differentiation. And I remember doing small concerts in hot places that made me sweat. It was gay clubs, gay bars. It’s just that I’ve always loved it since the beginning and it has grown as time goes by. AB: Kylie we all know that you have a special relationship with France and Paris. But, when you are in Paris, do you like to do something special? Do you have a neighborhood or a favorite place in Paris? KM: (In French) In Paris I really like the Café de Flore for a hot chocolate. Otherwise I did a concert at the Café de Flore, it was incredible, it was a small show in Paris. I have a lot of friends there. I was in love from the beginning. AB: Thanks, Kylie Minogue! Kylie Minogue who was my guest tonight and gave Radio FG an exclusive interview on the occasion of the release of « Step Back In Time - The Definitive Collection ». Isa, Nov/Dec 2K19

Interviews • Graham Norton Show

graham norton show NOVEMBer 22nd, 2019 united kingdom On November 22nd, Kylie (who looked absolutely sensational with her Balmain minidress and Tasaki jewellery) was on Graham Norton’s iconic red sofa with Ricky Gervais and Elizabeth Banks. The show was super funny, especially thanks to Ricky Gervais who is always joking and messing around. Graham Norton (talking to the crowd): When I introduced Kylie Minogue, did anyone think the « Dame » was silent. (Talking to Kylie) : I feel like your name needs a « Dame » at the beginning of it. ‘Cause what are ou now? You’re an OBE’s ? Kylie: Yes, I’m a Kylie MinOBEs. OBE means « Order of the Bristish empire ». I’m very happy with the OBE. Graham: Do you have to have an OBE or can you go straight to « Dame » ? Kylie: That’s a good question. Graham: What do you have to do to get the Damehood ? Kylie: A lot! Graham: You’ll be singing a song for us later, and it’s a very special performance, describe what you’re going to be singing. Kylie: So I’m singing a song that we made for Glastonbury ‘cause one of my biggest inspirations for Glastonbury was David Bowie,

and so it’s a mash-up of Slow and Fashion. Graham: And Glastonbury broke all view records, more than Ed Sheehan, more than Adele. Kylie: Last time I was here we were talking about it saying it was coming up, and as it got closer and closer I couldn’t even say the word, we just called it the « short show » because I was racked with absolute fear about the whole thing. Graham: But also it was one of those thing where it just all came together, it was a beautiful day. Kylie: It was amazing, it was packed, people were dressed (laughs in the audience) I mean I really tried to stop at one point and just take the whole thing in… Ricky (still laughing): Yes they were dressed as if they weren’t naked, they all had clothes on. Is that why you were nervous Kylie ? Kylie: (laughs) No I meant dressed 66 www.kylie-world.com

like there were versions of me throughout the years, the brim hats with curls coming out of them and the white hooded thing, it was just totally and utterly surreal and it was an absolute privilege. Graham then shows a short film in which we see the amazing crowd that was there.

Graham: Were you able to enjoy it, or is it just kind of this blur of a thing? Kylie: It’s pretty much a blur but there’s definitely moments that I remember. Near the end I was very happy, I’ve nearly made it through but overall the response that it got and the love that it had. I was so scared about it all, I hadn’t thought about what might happen after it, I was so concerned about just getting there.

Graham: The fact of having had to cancel it in 2005, did it make it extra special, was it like a second chance. Kylie: It was extra everything yeah, it was a real second chance and obviously I was aware that I wanted to say something and acknowledge that, I just couldn’t really devise a script or some lines in my head that I would stick to, but I think I said enough. I had to stop before the ugly cry. I got to the emotional part of it and I thought « Right, let’s get on with this, I’ve got two thirds of the show to get on with ». Graham: Now if people want to see Kylie Minogue on television they can because at Christmas time Channel 4 is having like a very Kylie Christmas. And the DVD of Kylie Golden will be coming out, what a lovely gift that would make. (laughs) But before that you’ve got this special show with Alan Carr. It’s not just a concert is it? Kylie: No, it’s a first time format. The deal is a group of fans have been kind of assembled at this venue they think it’s for Kylie related « something », I don’t even know what they were told but the surprise was that I turn up and it’s a whole like Q&A and I do a number of songs. But the hilarious part is when we did one of the comedy sketches and I had Alan in my earpiece telling me what to say to unsuspecting people in a car. Graham: Let’s have a look at a clip.

Kylie: It’s called, hum, Spank me, Ricky: Also, not by law you don’t brackets harder, harder. have to really you know, she’s not The woman laughs. in charge, you don’t have to do this. Then we see Kylie in another car, this time Elizabeth: This is actually a very she’s with a man. nice one. Alan: I have a petting zoo in Filey. Kylie: OK thank you. Kyile: I made a petting zoo. Elizabeth: How do you signal to a Man: In Filey? partner that you want to have sex? Alan: With giant rabbits. Everyone laughs, including Kylie. Kylie: Yeah ! I’ve got rabbits, but So then basically Ricky makes all sorts of funny signals, saving Kylie from her appathe giant kind. rent embarrassment. Alan: Alpacas… Graham: Just say pass. Kylie: Alpacas. Alan: I put a Cornetto on its head Then Elizabeth turns to Ricky: « This is and pretend it’s a unicorn. called the name game ». What have Kylie: I’ve got a donkey, and I put you named your private parts ? like the Cornetto on its head and (laughs in the audience). pretend it’s a unicorn (nervous Ricky: Hum, Pamela. Back on the Graham Norton show, Kylie admits that this went on and on and on:

« I was dying on the inside thinking « How are you even still taking to me ? » ». Later during the show, Graham Norton lets us know that Elizabeth Banks has invented her own board game. It’s called « Unveiled: A Party Game and Guide for Bachelorette ». Graham has it of course, and has selected a few cards with questions for the show. Elizabeth plays the quiz master and explains that the game is meant to be played with your friends out at the bars when you’re a bachelorette. Sometimes you have to do something involving someone else and sometimes you have to do something just for yourself, it’s a sort of like truth or dare (Kylie bites her nails, slightly stressed it seems).

There we see Kylie in a car with a lady asking Kylie « So what are you up to ? Anything exciting ? ».

Elizabeth: For instance, I’ll pick Kylie and this is a good one for you Alan: You’re doing a TV show. because you’re loved-up, you’ve Kylie: I’m doing a TV show. got a partner. So this is a « say » Alan: And you’re singing your question which means she has to brand new single. tell us what she would say. The Kylie: And I’m singing a brand new question is... song. card which Elizabeth said was perfect for her. It’s called Sexy Singer.

Elizabeth: « Find an unattractive male and serenade him ». Kylie can’t stop laughing and the camera zooms on Ricky’s face.

Kylie: Oh my god. This is brutal. She turns to Ricky « Will you play the role for me ? ». Ricky: Go on then I’ll try and make myself ugly. And Ricky starts making funny faces to make himself look ugly (he is SO funny!!).

Kylie : Well what can I sing? Then starts singing an excerpt of « Tears On My Pillow ». After that Lewis Hamilton joins Kylie, Elizabeth and Ricky on the red couch. Of course he is interviewed about Formula One and the mechanic side of things so Graham turns to Kylie after a while and says : « And of course Kylie you

must be finding this fascinating because famously, you’ve played a mechanic ». Kylie: Yeah I was there before you Lewis (laughs). Graham: Do you know a lot about cars? Kylie: I had absolutely no idea what I was doing. I’d hold one of those things which apparently is Isa, Nov/Dec 2K19

you know it was just disastrous. Then at the end, Kylie did an absolutely stunning and super sensual performance of the Slow/Fashion mash-up. Just WOW honestly. To conclude, Graham talks about the 3 discs edition of Kylie’s latest Greatest Hits and shows it.

Graham: « Slow » is on « Step Back In time ». So, Kylie you brought it out with a third disc now? Because fans were annoyed? Kylie: They were, as was I. I think there were some omissions so now we had to extend the Greatest Hits to 3 CDs. Graham: It’s got a fourteen minute Kylie megamix, how good is that ? Good luck with the album and thank you so much for that performance Kylie. Interviews • L’Officiel India

l’officiel india NOVEMBEr 29th, 2019 india A glorious career spanning over thirty years, including chartbusters and ultra glamorous outfits, Italian fashion designer Giambattista Valli interviews the Australian singer on her relationship with music, creativity and fashion. From the beginning in the 1980s to the present: from Locomotion to Golden. Influencing an entire generation over three decades, Kylie Minogue, chameleon-like, has changed her face and look countless times, always with the same contagious energy. Her last album, released in the end of June, « Step Back in Time: The Definitive Collection » (BMG, Warner distribution) is a collection of her greatest hits: from « I Should Be So Lucky » from the 80s, to the duet « Where The Wild Roses Grow » with Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, and the inevitable « Can’t Get You Out Of My Head » from the « Fever » album, awarded with five platinum records.

GB: How does your creative path work? KM: I don’t use a copy-paste method to compose my songs. I didn’t write the lyrics for the first records: Stocks Aitken & Waterman dealt with them through PWL Records. But after a while, a sense of frustration took over, because I wanted to have more say in the matter. So, slowly I started writing them and now it’s one of the favourite aspects of my work. On the other hand, I stopped playing, despite having learnt various instruments. I abandoned them all after growing up. I still seem to hear my grandfather’s voice telling me, « You’ll regret having stopped studying music », and Giambattista Valli: Let’s start with a trivial question. that’s exactly what happened. Every song is different. What prompted you to become a singer? It may happen that I arrive in the studio and my team Kylie Minogue: I didn’t wake up one day thinking that has already started working on a track, then I come I want to be a singer. I gradually became aware of to think of a melody or a rhythm. Sometimes I have it as a child. My first memory related to music goes a feeling that I want to pull out, or there is a phrase back to when I was nine years old and attended a buzzing in my head and I need somebody to create its rhythm course. Then I took violin lessons and for a music. So, that’s how it all work.mélodie few years played the piano, and even the flute at school. As for singing, I began to get excited from the age of eight or nine: my first memories are related to Grease, Abba, to the Bad Girls album by Donna Summer, which I sang from beginning to end (without understanding the meaning, of course). That’s how I started fantasising about a future as a singer. I don’t remember if it was a concrete aspiration, but it is certainly a dream that has accompanied me throughout my childhood. At the age of 16, I started studying singing. I had acted in some television series and put aside some money, which I invested in lessons and recorded a demo. The rest is history. After the experience in the Neighbours (series), I launched a single.

GB: You wrote an important chapter in the history of international pop. What do you feel when you listen to yourself on the radio? KM: I still find it very exciting. The first time it happened in Australia, in 1987, with the song « Locomotion », I went crazy after hearing it on the radio. Today it is possible to listen to a song always and everywhere, but at that time resources were limited and radio stations were few. Everyone tried to get their song through; then came I, the soap opera girl who decided to throw herself in the deep end by launching her first single. Even today when a new single comes out, I always feel the same emotion on the first radio pass.

album, the look is dictated by the music. Otherwise, I happen to oscillate between periods. When I have no idea of the latest trends, I ask myself, « It has been working for years, why change? ». A pretty dress, light as a feather, with a masculine cashmere cardigan on it is my 90s outfit. I will never abandon it nor a pair of jeans with a shirt. If I was not a pop star, I would probably not be so attached to fancy outfits. I have realised that the best part of a larger than life ensemble lies in the emotion of wearing it with the right attitude: putting it on, showing it and taking it off. What happens in between — whether it’s a dinner, a social evening or an award ceremony — you remain unfazed.

GB: How do you manage to reinvent yourself every time? KM: I am curious by nature. There is an almost insatiable curiosity, and to make matters worse, I am a gemini. In the past, questions about « reinventing myself » used to trouble me. Reinvention does not happen overnight. If you spend days with yourself, the change is not as sudden as it appears on the outside. Therefore for me, it is not a reinvention, but a constant evolution. I never take it for granted and expect people to accept my evolution. There is this sense of maturity and experience, as I grow up. Some experiences are resounding successes while others, total fiasco. GB: In June, you celebrated thirty years of your career with « Step Back In Time: The Definitive Collection ». What inspired you to reinvent yourself musically? How did your look change? KM: I’ll give you two examples: « Golden », this album had a lot of country influences, so we went in that direction even with the look. If instead we think of « Fever », released in 2001, the sound was more GB: In addition electronic and cold, and so was the look. to making music, you actually create GB: What approach did you adopt over the years to fashion. What are create your outfits? the outfits you are KM: I went by trial and error, learning from my mis- most attached to? takes. When I was little, my grandmother taught me KM: The Mr. Pearl to sew, design patterns, to make clothes with a ma- corset commischine, and knitting, as well. It was she who took care sioned by John of my stage clothes, just as she did for my mother, Galliano could be a both as a girl, and for her work as a dancer. nightmare to wear, but an incredible show for the public, as well as a true fashion statement for me. Speaking of style statements, I hate to talk about it again, but that white one in the « Can’t Get You Out Of My Head » video looked like a rag. Keeping the sense of modesty, while wearing it was a real challenge. And, then there are the golden hot pants that a friend of mine bought in a thrift store for 50 pence. If I had to mention one of my looks that became iconic, it would be those hot pants: they stayed in my closet for months, and when we were about to shoot the video they somehow popped up. In one of my most distressing nightmares (I have several), it happens that they call me on stage and I don’t find the costumes. What happened to them? Why doesn’t anyone listen to me? There is a close link between the performance and the clothes you wear on stage. Often, before a concert or an exhibition, I say to myself, « I can’t do it with these shoes, but they are beautiful, so I have to wear them ». It’s a game of balance. We must compromise and ask ourselves: What should I give precedence to? How much can I dare? Can I really perform without anyone noticing the torture I am inflicting on myself? It’s complicated. GB: Your biggest regret and a dream for the future ? KM: My biggest regret... I wanted to keep a journal. Today, we have so many memories thanks to mobile phones, but when I made my first international trip outside Australia, everything was different. I would have liked to be able to re-read everything that I have done and the moods I have experienced. For the future, my dream is to simply continue to live the stimulating and rewarding moments, spread joy and share emotions with the audience at the same time.
