Hiiyyyyyaa lovers ! In this very weird period, we hope that everything is going well for you and your family. To make time go faster during this quarantine, here is a new edition of the magazine (a little bible again). On this month’s program, a complete focus on « Where The Wild Roses Grow », another one on Kylie and Jean Paul Gaultier’s collaborations, and also a complete one about Kylie’s first date in Brazil since over 12 years! It’s the perfect opportunity for us to tell you that we are now partners with Kylie Brasil for the next editions of the magazine, so it’ll also be available in Portuguese! Given the (lack of) news and the fact that Kylie won’t be leaving her house either, we decided we won’t be doing a magazine in April, but don’t worry we’ll come back with a new edition in late May, in which we’ll talk about everything that happened during April and May. And if you are really bored, our old magazines are still available on our website and on issuu.com! Take care of yourself and stay home.

Where The Wild Roses Grow ? After « Where Is The Feeling? » the songs « If I was Your Lover » and « Time Will Pass You By » had been considered to be released as Kylie’s next single(s) but that didn’t happen because Kylie had another song up her sleeve, and not just any song. It was the most unexpected duet EVER: « Where The Wild Roses Grow » with Gothic Guru Nick Cave. This song was one of the most unpredictable singles of Kylie’s career, but her fans loved it and it enabled her to earn her a new set of fans and was a massive success. It goes without saying that I can’t write a focus of this song without talking about Nick Cave, his friendship with Kylie and the influence he had on her. But I’ll also talk about the 1996 Poetry Olympics and the documentary « 20 000 Days on Earth ». I’m super excited to be doing this focus for you Lovers! I hope you’ll enjoy it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Focus • Where The Wild Roses Grow First of all, who is Nick Cave? Honestly, it’s very hard to talk about Nick in a « few words » because he has done (and still does) tons of things but I’ll give it a go. Nicholas Edward Cave was born in a small country town in the Australian state of Victoria on September 22nd 1957. He is an Australian singer, songwriter, author, composer, screenwriter and occasional actor, best known as the lead singer of rock band Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds.

She had heard of him but was unaware of the legend that he was (she didn’t listen to his music at all), so she didn’t attempt to find out more about it, and just said « Oh that’s nice » (LOL). In July 2015, their son Arthur tragically fell to his death from a cliff in Brighton when he was only 15 years old. After that, Nick told GQ magazine that he and his family were moving to Los Angeles because they just found it too difficult to live in Brighton. To end this short biography, Nick is also the godfather to Michael Hutchence’s daughter Tiger Lily (whose full name is Heavenly Hiraani Tiger Lily Hutchence Geldof), because Nick and Michael were really good friends… How did Kylie and Nick meet?

It was still some time after that though that she received a phone call from Mushroom records (Nick was signed at Suicide Records, a subsidiary of Mushroom) saying that they had a demo for a duet with him asking her if they could send it over and she agreed. The demo track featured Blixa Bargeld singing Kylie’s lines. When she received it and listened to it, Kylie called Nick, but he was out, so she left a message to his mum. She said to Nick’s mum that he could call her back at her mum’s house (too cute right?). Then Kylie told her parents : « If a guy called Nick calls, I need to speak with him, so don’t be shifty on the phone ». Instinctively Kylie knew that this curious and unlikely collaboration would work, but she just could never have guessed how well.

In the Lalala book, we find out that Kylie first heard about Nick In Molly Meldrum’s 2007 book by Michael Hutchence when they entitled « 50 Years of Rock in Aus11 www.kylie-world.com

tralia », Nick is quoted as saying that the song « was written very much with Kylie in mind ». He had wanted to write a sad and slow song for Kylie for many years.

« I had a quiet obsession with her for about six years. I wrote several songs for her, none of which I felt was appropriate to give her. It was only when I wrote this song, which is a dialogue between a killer and his victim that I thought finally I’d written the right song for Kylie to sing. I sent the song to her and she replied the next day » In Rolling Stone Magazine of November 1995, Nick said that the song - even though it’s a murder ballad - was dealing with this obsession he had with her - on a professional level - but an obsession which is about her beauty and her innocence in a way. He stated : « Her un-cynical approach to things in the face of what I guess she goes through… There was something very much about the person she was, that she was able to maintain, in a quite honest way, this un-cynical kind of person. I really admired that. I admired her strength in a way… ». In the Lalala book again, William Baker stated : « Cave had admired Kylie since « Better The Devil You Know » Isa, March 2K20

unleashed her suppressed sexuality some years earlier. He saw the song as seminal work and wrote of it « The disguising of the terror of love in a piece of innocuous pop music is an interesting concept. « Better The Devil You Know » is one of pop music’s most violent and distressing love lyrics. When Kylie sings these words, there is an innocence to her voice that makes the horror of this chilling lyric all the more compelling » ». The first time Kylie and Nick actually met though was in January 1995, when they went to the studio in Melbourne to record the song. Kylie confessed she had speed-read a biography to find out who he was and try to understand him a little bit (she also mentions this in Nick’s documentary « 20 000 days on Earth »). Talking about the recording session, Nick once stated that it only took two takes to record Kylie’s vocals. According to him, she sang the first take and there was a little bit of « warbling » (i.e. over singing) on the end of the notes and he had to ask her to not sing it so well (lol) and then she sang it like you hear it on the single.

« My performance on the record was something of a revelation to me. I had never sounded like that before. Nick was ever so lovely, gentle and charming, directing me to achieve that sound, to bring alive the characters and the story. We only did a few takes and it was very natural and easy. is, why did he kill her, what did she do to deserve that ? The answer to that is « All beauty must die ». William Baker stated: « « Where The Wild Roses Grow » was a love song from a murderous lover to a victim whose haunting beauty had so entranced him that he sought to preserve her perfection in the tranquil repose of death ».

The ballad is calm (obviously, it’s a ballad) but the fact that Nick’s dark voice (which is suitable as he’s the violent murderer) is in total contrast to Kylie’s voice makes it super creepy yet haunting and fascinating. Kylie’s vocals may seem « weak » here, but it’s « I’ve always enjoyed writing done on purpose, she sounds so songs about dead women ». pure and innocent that honestly Kylie’s fiercest critics all agreed and this single was just that: a her verses are heartbreaking. that the « Singing Budgie » had dark ballad about a man murdebeen silenced and that the girl ring a woman. But to start with, the question As the title of the album suggests, it consists of - new and traditional murder ballads, a genre of songs that relays the details and often consequences of crimes of passion. Nick said it himself in the book « I’m A Man » by Ruth Padel:

13 www.kylie-world.com

Isa, March 2K20

This song is a traditional Appalachian murder ballad about a man facing the gallows for the murder of his lover: he gave her poisoned wine, stabbed her, and threw her in a river. Originally the song was named « Rose Conley » (the name of the woman who gets killed) and recorded by G. B. Grayson and Henry Whitter in 1927! There have been so many different versions of this song after that that sometimes even the lyrics vary depending on the versions. The only thing that stays in all versions is that the lyrics are always written from the point of view of the murderer.

In Medieval Europe, there lived a young woman named Eliza Day, whose beauty was like that of the wild roses that grew down the river all bloody and red (does that ring a bell?). One day a young man came into town and instantly fell in love with her (« From the first day I saw her I knew she was the one »). This sentence also means he knew he would kill her, he’s a predator choosing a prey, not a « normal » man choosing a girlfriend. In the legend, she immediately became his obsession, and they « dated » for three days, and that’s exactly what the lyrics say as well.

Nick Cave also arranged this tale as the second of two b-sides on the CD-Maxi Single version of « Where The Wild Roses Grow ». He entitled it simply « The Willow Garden ».

• And of course, on the third day he took her down to the river and after showing her the roses, they kissed. The man then waited until her back was turned and took a rock in his fist whispering « all beauty must die » and with one swift blow, he killed her instantly. He then placed a rose between her teeth and slid her body into the river. The legend says that Eliza’s body was never found and over the years, her real name was more or less forgotten and so everyone referred to her as « The Wild Rose ». In the song that’s why Kylie says « Why they call me it I do not know… ». According to the legend, some people claim to have seen Eliza’s ghost wandering the riverside, blood running down the side of her head, a single rose in her hand.

• On the first day, he visited her where she lived. For him she was perfection, and she was receptive 2. He was inspired by to his romantic attentions. • On October 13th, 1995 Kylie and Nick appeared on MTV’s Most Wanted to perform « Where The Wild Roses Grow » and « Death Is Not The End ». The latter is originally a Bob Dylan song which Nick Cave, Kylie, Anita Lane (Australian singer-songwriter), Shane Mac Gowan (Irish vocalist) and PJ Harvey (English musician and singer-songwriter) covered all together. The song is also on the « Murder Ballads » album. • In January 1996, Kylie performed the song with Nick and his band in Sydney at the Big Day Out Festival which was an annual music festival that was held in five Australian cities: Sydney, Melbourne, Gold Coast, Adelaide and Perth, until 2014). Kylie arrived with super short hair, so it was quite a shock to be honest. They also sang the duet during the Melbourne date and on this occasion photographer Tony Mott took some very famous pics of them both, and there’s a very interesting story related to those photos. Focus • Where The Wild Roses Grow The Wild Roses Grow » was inspired by the painting « Ophelia » by Sir John Everet Millais, which was finished sometime between 1851 and 1852. Ophelia is a character in William Shakespeare’s drama « Hamlet ». She is a young noblewoman of Denmark and is driven mad when her father, Polonius, is murdered by her lover, Hamlet. She dies while still very young, suffering from grief and madness. The events shown in Millais’s painting of Ophelia are not actually seen on stage but apparently Ophelia fell into the river while picking flowers and slowly drowned.

submerges her body in the river. The video takes place nearly entirely in a swamp and was shot on a sunny day in the UK. Rocky Schenck indicated that one of the primary goals of this video was to take a real environment and to make it look as if he had created the setting in a studio, to manipulate a natural setting and to make it look as it was a beautifully executed but artificial set. In fact, he wanted to build the entire set, but couldn’t due to budget restrictions. So instead, he relied on elaborate lighting and manipulation of the camera work to create a liminal world somewhere between painting and film, as well as between art and reality.

Ophelia by Millais

« Ophelia » was then painted multiple times by different painters (French painter Alexandre Cabanel, Belgian painter Constantin Meunier and English painter John William Waterhouse who painted her three times, in 1894, 1889 and 1910, are just three of them).

Ophelia by J.W Waterhouse

So, for the video, Rocky Schenck used Millais’s well-known painting as a template and positioned Eliza in the water like the painter, surrounded by flowers. However, Schenck also stated that he was influenced by the 1955 classic film « The Night Of The Hunter ». In this film, a man marries a rich widow for her money. When she realises his intent, he murders her and

He stated : « For the lighting design, I used backlighting (sometimes referred to as « rim lighting »), which gives the setting and the characters a rather ethereal glow around the edges. I wanted to duplicate the look of early silent films, which occasionally utilized extreme backlighting two to three stops hotter than the key lights. This was a deliberate decision on my part to accentuate and romanticize the dreamy and surreal atmosphere of the storyline. Multiple mirrors reflecting the sunlight were used to create this effect for many of the scenes ». For Nick Cave, the video shoot 17 www.kylie-world.com

was « close to a religious experience ». Before the music even starts in the video, we see Kylie’s feet in the water, then her legs, and the camera goes up her body really slowly, we can see she’s actually lying in the water and she’s wearing a simple virginal white dress, and then once we see her face, we get it. She’s dead. And to « confirm » that (although we didn’t really need confirmation), all along in the music video, Kylie’s face is extremely pale, and her lips are blood-red.

Then, we see the bloody hands of Nick Cave, he rubs them against one another before washing them in the water, it does not show the actual act of murder, but we all understand that he killed her at this stage. The beginning of the video is a « flashback ». When the song starts (i.e. when Kylie sings the first chorus), she is walking through a field of roses that seem to be floating in the air - wearing a white dress here as well. Shenck indicated that these shots were intended to be seen as shots of her ghost, lingering after death in order to tell her story.

Then Nick sings the first verse, the sun is shining in the background into the scene, and it looks Isa, March 2K20

the 1996 MTV AWARDS & nick’s famous letter • In 1996, following the success of his band’s Murder Ballads album, word reached Nick Cave that he had been nominated for an MTV Award, as « Best Male Artist ». That nomination was soon withdrawn, however, because Nick himself formally requested that it be withdrawn as he wasn’t comfortable with the competitive nature of such awards. The letter was read by Kylie herself in 2015 for « LETTERS LIVE » which is a series of live events celebrating the power of literary correspondence where talented, inspiring and high profile artists from various disciplines are asked to read letters out loud to the audience, to celebrate letter writing and the art of correspondence.

each of Kylie’s singles or pictures (or whatever really), we wanted to share with you a story that was reported by the internet site www. abc.net.au. Photographer Tony Mott told the story behind the iconic Nick and Kylie pictures he took on the « Big Day Out » tour in 1996. He said he’s very proud of these pictures because they’re a sort of accident. When he was touring as the official photographer for the « Big Day Out » event, he would do photoshoots in advance for pre-publicity.

He had done a shoot with Nick and Kylie backstage in Sydney on the Friday where he had set-up a studio bit of canvas and a light and it was right outside Nick’s dressing room because he had been told by Nick’s management that it had to be convenient. After that he was invited by Nick’s tour manager for a drink : « I proceeded to drink probably one glass too many, but I was having a good time ». About two hours later, he went back to where the shooting had taken place to get all his stuff back but when he arrived someone had stolen his two cameras, a load of lenses, and of course his films. It was his fault in a way, you just don’t leave that kind of stuff like that but at the same time, it was backstage, so you needed a pass to get there. Anyway, that was in Sydney and they were playing again in Melbourne on the Sunday.

He borrowed some cameras, went to Melbourne and Nick’s management then contacted him because they had heard his material had been stolen, and said : « we’ll do the shoot again in Melbourne for you ». When he arrived there, he set everything up and Nick’s tour manager came up to him and said : « Nick says he requires no approval (which was a huge favour, knowing that Nick is not so keen on getting his pictures taken). They are yours. Raise as much money as you like. That day was to change Kylie’s life forever. According to her, it is possibly the most cathartic moment she can remember, and of course, it was Nick’s idea.

He was there to make a recital, and he called Kylie and asked her to come down (it was a kind of open event) to recite the lyrics to « I Should Be So Lucky » as a poem, to face her past with whatever demons there might be. He wanted her to see the PWL days as a triumph, not as a cross to bear, and he believed this was a fun way of doing so. He convinced her to come over - even though she found nume-

Nick was saying to me « It’ll be brilliant, it’ll confront all of your past, all in one fell swoop » ». « There I was, stripped of the usual preparations and securities of a performer without the « ego jacket » that lets you go out and be the person your fans want you to be. I’d been through so many phases, running away from things I’d done in the past and always trying to be someone different. And suddenly being on that stage was like being face to face with the girl I was 10 years ago and saying to her « All right, yes, we’ve been through some embarrassing moments together, but you know what? You’re OK » ».

She walked on the stage alone, casually dressed in tracksuit with no make-up (nor bra), and identified by a sticker with her name in capitals, denuded of her usual glitter and feathers, and recited the lyrics without any musical accompaniment... And it turns out the crowd loved her! It was as if the Second Coming had happened there and then. DigitalSpy reported that as soon as the audience realized what she was doing, they were completely on board. It was a charming moment which demonstrated that, despite wanting to escape her shiny pop persona during this period of her career, she had a good sense of humour and irony. What Kylie said about this moment: 23 www.kylie-world.com

« It felt as if that moment could not have happened a minute earlier or later. All at once I realized « you can run but you can’t hide ». I think people are blinded by my early success and forgot the often painful criticism I had to endure. With this realization and from that moment onwards, everything became so much easier. It was a revelation and a necessity ». Isa, March 2K20

« We got Kylie to sing this song, which became a kind of minor hit in its day. She kind of came in as a beam of light into our lives for a short time. It was a beautiful thing to be sitting with her driving around in this car, it was great ».

Nick: Are you worried about being forgotten? Kylie: Yeah. I worry about being forgotten and about being lonely. Nick: Oh really? Kylie: Yeah. Nick: You have waxworks made of you. Kylie: I had multiple waxworks. Nick: How many? Kylie: I think I had five. Well, at a certain point… Nick: I’m really jealous of you Kylie: The story went that the only person who had more waxworks than me was the Queen. Nick: Is that right? Kylie: I don’t know if that’s still a fact, but it was at the time. Kylie: I remember Michael Hutchence telling me that he was short-sighted, and he tried wearing glasses (lenses) of contact to see the audience and it terrified him so much he never did it again. Nick: Oh, is that right? Kylie: We spoke about that because the first time I saw INXS play, I thought that he’d looked at Isa, March 2K20

LYRICS Chorus: They call me The Wild Rose But my name was Eliza Day Why they call me it I do not know For my name was Eliza Day

Kylie: On the second day he came with a single red rose He said « Give me your loss and your sorrow » I nodded my head, as I lay on the bed « If I show you the roses, will you follow? »

Nick: From the first day I saw her I knew she was the one She stared in my eyes and smiled For her lips were the colour of the roses That grew down the river, all bloody and wild Kylie: When he knocked on my door and entered the room My trembling subsided in his sure embrace He would be my first man, and with a careful hand He wiped at the tears that ran down my face Chorus

Chorus Kylie On the third day he took me to the river He showed me the roses and we kissed And the last thing I heard was a muttered word As he knelt above me with a rock in his fist Nick On the last day I took her where the wild roses grow She lay on the bank, the wind light as a thief, And I kissed her goodbye, said « All beauty must die » And I leant down and planted a rose ‘tween her teeth

Nick: On the second day I brought her a flower She was more beautiful than any woman I’d seen I said, « Do you know, where the wild roses grow So sweet and scarlet and free? »

Kylie In Brazil Earlier this month, Kylie Minogue went to Brazil to perform at the GRLS festival, the only festival planned in her schedule for 2020. She hadn’t performed in Brazil in over twelve years (yep, since the « X Tour ») and South American fans were over the moon to welcome the singer back on their territory. It was on this occasion that Deyse and Junior - who are at the head of « Kylie Brasil » and with whom we decided to partner for our next editions of the Kylie Times - met Kylie and were able to attend her concert. They tell us all about the atmosphere, the festival, and talk to us about their special moment with Kylie.

THE ARRIVAL As the show was taking place on March 7th (Saturday), we were expecting Kylie to arrive here on the Friday. But, on Wednesday night, she posted a photo on her Instagram with a message « Brazil... is it the weekend yet? ». It caught our attention. We (the « Kylie Brasil » team) started to do some research about possible hotels where she could stay and flights, and we discovered she was soon arriving and that she had a booking in a famous hotel. On Thursday morning, some fans went to the hotel and stayed there. Other fans had thought she would maybe arrive that Thursday morning, so they went to the airport. And indeed, she arrived on Thursday with her team and the fans got pictures with her and she signed some of their items. There were not that many people waiting for her, so she talked to each person. The fans at the airport then informed us she was about to leave and go to the hotel. We calculated the time and we scheduled to meet her there. I was at the hospital. My baby nephew was there to undergo a surgery. As soon as he entered the surgery room, I left the hospital, took a cab and went to Fasano to meet the boys. All of them had taken albums or books to get signed. I arrived with nothing at all, just my phone in case we could take a picture. A few minutes later, Kylie arrived at the hotel in a black van. The security guy (very nice and talkative guy) asked us to stay away a bit, and that we could go see her only if she said so. She came out of the car and she invited us to come close to her. What Kylie told us was « make a line and I’ll take a photo with each one of you ». I was the last one in line. The boys started to get close. We were not allowed to touch or to put our arms around her. A person from Kylie’s team was taking our hands off her. She was not talking much, even if she kept smiling, she was probably tired after such a long flight. She just asked about the line-up of the festival to one of the boys, asked him if we knew all the singers. After fans took their pictures, security guy led them to a corner far from her. Something was funny : I was the last fan. I gave my phone to a person from Kylie’s team and I asked for a picture. When I was getting close to her, she was already thanking everyone and saying goodbye so I’m pretty sure she thought I was one of the security people from the hotel. The boys made jokes about it the whole day afterwards! My black clothes, my posture and my sunglasses... I really looked like a security woman! I came close to her, got the picture taken and got a bit of time to talk to her. I told her we were all members of Kylie Brasil 32 www.kylie-world.com

and I asked her about a Brazilian singer, if she knew something about her. She talked for a minute with me and then I thanked her, and I left because I needed to go back to the hospital. Junior also told us about this moment: Meeting Kylie is a dream come true for all her fans, but it’s a distant reality for most of us. I’ve been lucky enough to meet her a couple of times back in 2012 when she came to Brazil to promote the movie « Holy Motors », but I never really had the chance to talk to her, which was my goal all these years: to tell her how much she and her music had influenced me, but it was a distant reality, almost impossible to happen. For those who don’t know me, my name is Cleonilson Junior, I’ve been a Kylie fan since 2003 and editor of Kylie Brazil website since 2010. I’ve been dedicating most of my free time sharing Kylie news in my country, where we hardly get any promo about her coming on regular newspapers or magazines. I’ve discovered from a friend that she was coming back to Brazil to perform for the first time in 12 years. I completely lost my mind inside the supermarket. It got me by surprise, I never expected she would ever return for a concert here. Three months later, I was on my way to São Paulo, a 2-hour flight from where I live (Salvador), and decided that it was my chance, that I needed to try and have that much desired talk with Kylie. But how? That’s when our CSI mission

started. Me and a few friends checked out the flights coming from London, and also a friend of a friend told us the hotel she was staying in. Since we were a big group, we decided to split in two : Half at the airport, half at the hotel. Then, we could have more time with her. At exactly 7:30am, Kylie finally arrived at the airport, where she talked to all the fans who were waiting for her, took pictures and gave autographs! So sweet! I was part of the hotel group, so we got even more excited waiting for her. One hour after she left the airport, her car arrived. At first we thought she wouldn’t stop to talk to us. The car went straight to the garage. But then, it stopped. Her security left the car and came to us saying that she was going to talk to us and take individual pictures, but we needed to stay calm. I was the first one who got the chance to talk to her. I was so nervous. Everything I wanted to say had completely vanished from my mind. I was shaking, and she realized it and said « Don’t worry, you can relax ». That only made me even more nervous! haha. She signed my « Fever » vinyl and « Lucky » CD single, we took a couple pictures and that was it. When I left, she saw my Summer Tour 2019 hoodie and said that she loved it. I answered « Thanks, it’s yours », and she gave me that smile that all of us know so well! Even not having the chance to say what I really wanted to, I had the feeling my mission was accomplished. Little did I know that two days later I would have the most memorable moment of my life! 33 www.kylie-world.com

KYLIE AND THE FANS After our quick meeting with her at the hotel, we spread the word. Fans knew where she was staying. The hotel became crowded. All of them were trying to get a moment with her. On Thursday, she left the hotel just at night. She was wearing a fancy gown because she was going to have dinner. Kylie was always smiling and seemed to be truly happy to be here once again and to see so much love. But, from that moment on, she made an agreement with the fans: 4 fans in one picture and no more signed items. Kylie took photos with everyone in front of the hotel. There were about 200 fans there that night. On Friday morning, another group of fans were there trying to get their pictures, but Kylie left just in the afternoon to do the soundcheck. Once again, she took pictures with everyone there. Always smiling. On Friday, she was wearing a pink slit dress and some fans made a lot of compliments on her beautiful legs. Kylie loved that and started to show some skin during the pictures. When she left the hotel, some fans, including members of Kylie Brasil, were at the festival arena to watch the soundcheck. At first, they were able to be behind the bars and see everything. As soon as Kylie arrived, the security told them they had to go to the other side of the street. It was possible to listen to everything. Kylie rehearsed almost the whole show during approximately one hour. People who had good cameras could film the soundcheck. Kylie noticed the fans and sent them a « hi! ». After the soundcheck, Kylie went to a restaurant. A couple of fans found out about it and took more pictures with her. She went back to the hotel, but nobody saw her anymore that day. On Saturday morning, before she left to go to the GRLS festival, more fans had the opportunity to get close to her. Once again, she took pictures with everyone. From her arrival until her departure, she was super kind to every fan, and she took pictures with all of them, no matter how many. Note that for the first time, a video was taken by Kylie’s team, on which we can see fans who are taking pictures with the singer and when she is signing CDs. This video really shows the love of Brazilians for our Australian and allows us to immerse ourselves a little more in the local atmosphere.

THE CONCERT As Kylie Brasil was preparing a surprise for her (we bought 5.000 heart balloons that we wanted to let go of during « All The Lovers »), I got there at 11am. Pretty soon for a concert that was scheduled at 8:45pm! The line was already formed because some fans got there at 9am, but it wasn’t long. Most of the audience got there in the afternoon, when the gates were open. I distributed balloons with some members of Kylie Brasil and at about 2pm, I got inside. I was one of the 200 winners of a competition. GRLS festival had put a quiz on their website : the ones with the highest score in a short time would be in a special place in front of the stage. And the place was great! Kind of a VIP area. The venue was big, with a capacity for about 15.000 people. The festival offered places for instant photos, games, food and drinks and official merch. Most of the products were about the festival, but it was possible to buy at least two Kylie items: two official t-shirts with the date of the show. The price wasn’t so good. A t-shirt was costing R$ 100,00 (in Euros.. not so much expensive. About 18 euros). Even if they weren’t cheap, many fans bought one because it was a good souvenir to remember the festival. It was very sunny and hot that day. The products the most consumed were water and beer! The gate opened at 2pm, but the shows started quite quickly after that. The festival was called GRLS because the idea was to have many lectures about women (the power of women

34 www.kylie-world.com

Deyse and Junior, March 2K20

in the society, women’s place in the world, etc) and to have a 100% feminine line-up. It was an inclusive festival, even if it was focused on women, it was about the minorities too, including gays and transgenders. So, the first person to sing was Linn da Quebrada... a transgender woman. Her show was about one hour long and the lyrics were about the transgender world. After her, we had Gabi Amarantus. She is very feminist, and her songs contemplate the culture of north of Brazil. Later, we had Ludmilla, a pop Brazilian singer. She is conquering the international market step by step. She recorded a duet with Cardi B. It was good to maintain the audience excited. Ludmilla made everybody dance! But the person that people were really waiting for... was Kylie!

lie. We have waited too long. 12 years! Many people in that crowd would be seeing a Kylie concert for the first time ever. It was possible to see on every fan’s face the happiness and the anxiety of the moment.

Kylie was supposed to be up on stage only at 8:45pm, but maybe because she knew we had waited too much... or because even Kylie was anxious to be in front of us again... she started the show 15 minutes before! No one was expecting it! The band came up on stage. The dancers. The mirrors. Now, try to close your eyes for a minute. Try to imagine a really crowded venue with people shouting so loud that it was possible to be heard from blocks away. It was among this scenario that Kylie appeared behind the mirror. Her face was pure joy looking Between the shows, people at the audience. She said « Tudo just walked around the venue bem? » in Portuguese, which means or bought drinks... but not after « Are you ok? ». People were crazy Ludmilla’s show. Everyone was about it and we all sang « Love At nervous, anxious, waiting for Ky- First Sight » really, really loud! Du35 www.kylie-world.com

ring « Wow », she told us that she was wearing a coat with the name « Brasil » on it and spelled as it is in Portuguese. For « On a Night Like This » she said that this would be the best night ever! She couldn’t believe how loud we were singing. She was looking constantly looking at us and saying « Oh my God ». I think it was a surprise for her, and even for us, how loud we sang « On a Night Like This ». Before she started « In My Arms », she took the coat off and said she was trying to prepare herself for that night, for that show because after 2008, she knew her Brazilian audience was different. She was trying to prepare herself for an amazing night, but it was impossible to be fully prepared for us. However, she had prepared something special. She would sing our favorite song. When « In My Arms » started, the sensation was the ground was going to crack and absorb us. People were jumping and shouting loud and dancing as much as they could. Definitely, it was the best moment of the Deyse et Junior, Mars 2K20

Focus • Kylie In Brazil show. « Get Outta My Way », « Hand on Your Heart » and « In Your Eyes » were very appreciated too. She even threw a kind of hat she was wearing to the audience. The fans started to sing the chorus of « Your Disco Needs You ». At first, she didn’t understand what we were singing. She took off the earphone and figured out it was a request. Kylie sang an acapella version of the song. To finish Berlin Electro Love moment, she sang another Brazilian favorite, the song that we had requested in 2008: « The One ».

we sang along once again.

« Slow », « Confide in Me », « Kids » were pure joy. There was no song the audience was unable to sing. Everybody knew all of them by heart. During « Can’t Get You Out Of My Head », Kylie took off the earphone again to hear the audience clearly. In 2008, it was the best moment of the show: we had sung so loud that she had been very impressed. So, she wanted to relive that kind of moment and did not regret it, because - of course -

Unfortunately, the show was coming to an end, and we all knew it. 1h20 minutes WENT sooooo fast. She came on stage again to sing « Dancing ». After the leading single from « Golden » album, the audience made another request. She started to laugh and said « guys, we have a curfew! But ok ». One more time, she sang for us acapella version of « Come Into My Word ». One guy in the audience was holding a rainbow flag

« Shocked », « Step Back in Time », « Better The Devil You Know », « Loco-motion ». Then... « All The Lovers ». I confess I was apprehensive. It was the moment the audience was supposed to let go of the balloons and I knew they were not easy to inflate. Thankfully, everybody raised them up on the right moment and it was beautiful! I must confess that I was expecting a more energetic reaction from Kylie, she only said « oh beautiful». Ok. At least she liked it.

36 www.kylie-world.com

and Kylie’s dancers picked it up and raised it during the song. It was a very nice moment. To finish... my song. I became a fan thanks to « Spinning Around ». Back in 2001, here in Brazil, a cable TV used to choose a concert to broadcast during the whole month. I used to come back from school and watch « On a Night Like This Tour » over and over again and « Spinning Around » was the song that made me think « hum... this singer is really nice ». So... it was my moment! As soon as she finished the song and the show, she said goodbye and told us it had been the most perfect night. She also promised to come back soon, but she had said that in 2008 too, so we kind of don’t believe it that much, but let’s be positive and hope she will come back soon. Before she left, she went from one side to the other sending kisses and waving her hand to the audience. It seemed like it was very hard for her to leave the stage and say goodbye for real.

OUR MOMENT WITH KYLIE... AGAIN During the Gabi Amarantos show, my phone vibrated. A new e-mail had arrived. It was from Polly, Kylie’s manager. She said Kylie had only a little free time and she wanted to see Junior (the other current member of Kylie Brasil) and I. At first it was a shock! I answered that I would be there to see Kylie. The problem was Kylie’s team asked us to leave the venue and go outside where she was. Junior and I tried to leave the venue, but it wasn’t possible, because if we did that, we were not able to go back in. We sent a text message to the Brazilian coordinator that got in contact with us as well and she advised us to wait next to a footbridge and she would come to us. We waited until some security guys came along and walked with us backstage. When we arrived, first we saw the girls who did the backing vocals. They were warming up their voices. Polly came to say hi and said Kylie was waiting. She guided us to her. Kylie welcomed us with a big smile on her face. The first thing I said was « can I hug you? ». As we were not allowed to touch her at the hotel, I needed to be sure. She replied « Yes, sure ». She hugged me really tight. Kylie loved our t-shirts. We made them especially for the show. It was « Kylie says Brazil ». Junior talked about a private moment in his life with her. When she looked at me, I told her I started

the Kylie Brasil website in 2001 when I was 17 years old. Now I’m 35 and I’m still working for her after 19 years. I told her I was her press agent in Brazil, her publicist and that she probably didn’t even have a clue about it. She looked at her team and at me sooo surprised, with eyes wide open. Kylie said « really? » and I just confirmed. She took my hand and said « Thank you so much for everything », and… well, that was everything I wanted to hear. It’s crazy because, as a fan, we do things to promote artist(s) we like without any expectations. We just do it because we love them. However, Kylie Brazil’s work became extremely professional after 2008, when I graduated. The website was a source of information and news about her to every fan, not only to Brazilians. We got in contact with her team when Terry Blamey was her manager and we were pretty close. We were maybe the closest fansite team to Kylie’s management. But, I never had a real shot to be in front of her and say everything I had done as a pro for her in Brazil. Of course, it went very fast. I didn’t get to say a third of all I wanted to say, but I had the chance to say a little at least and to get a « thank you » from her... that made my day. She also asked for our phones to record a video. We didn’t ask, SHE wanted to do that. She sent a message to all her Brazilian fans and, once more, she thanked us for all those years.

Deyse and Junior, March 2K20

Focus • Kylie In Brazil Junior also told us more about this amazing moment : Me and my friend Deyse were inside the venue of the GRLS Festival, where Kylie was performing, just having a great time waiting for her concert, when Deyse suddenly received an email from Kylie’s management saying that she wanted to meet the Kylie Brasil team in exactly two hours. At that time my pressure dropped, and I thought I was going to faint, no joke! It was my chance to talk to her.

At exactly 6:15pm we went for our meet and greet. Her dressing room was so far from the stage, it was like a 10-minute walk. They asked us to wait in the corridor until she was ready. While we were waiting, we saw her dancers coming in and out of their rooms, and the girls doing the backing vocals came out in the corridors to rehearse and warm up. They were singing « Love at First Sight »’s vo-

cals right in front of us, and I was trying not to freak out and sing with them! About 15 minutes later, Kylie’s manager came to us to give the instructions. It was going to be a quick chat, no pictures with our phones, they would send us the pictures later, and we were only allowed to give her a hug if she said yes. And then we were escorted to a door and when they opened it, there she was!!!!! It was the first time I realized how small she was, and her big blue eyes were staring at me! Deyse was the first to talk to her, asked for a hug, and she said « Of course! Come here ». Then she came to me, and also gave me a hug. So sweet! We started talking about KBR, and then I finally got to share my story. I told her that - even if she didn’t know me - she was part of my life, during really great times but also how she helped me through tough times. I also said how « Golden » was released at moment where I really needed to listen to it, especially the song « Lost Without You ». During the time I was speaking, she was looking at me right in my eyes and holding my hand, and then said that she was sorry about what happened to me, that we all have our bad moments, and that she was happy that she could help me to feel better. When our time ended, she asked if we wanted to make a video for Kylie Brasil. At first, I thought her team was going to record it and send it to us, but then she asked for my phone (!!!). She gave it to Christian, who filmed us. That was so nice of her! Then we said goodbye and went back to the festival. When I went back to where my boyfriend was, all I could do was cry. I cried like I had 38 www.kylie-world.com

never cried before. Now it was a real « mission accomplished » moment! About an hour later the show started, and it was definitely the best Kylie concert I’ve ever seen! She was so happy to see us, the crowd was so excited, even sang louder than her at times. At some points we asked for songs that weren’t even on the setlist, like « Come Into My World » and « Your Disco Needs You », which she promptly sang, and she also sang « In My Arms », which she hadn’t performed since the « Kiss Me Once Tour »! When it ended, everybody was so happy and emotional. It was really a great moment for all of us. We really hope we don’t need to wait another 12 years to have a Kylie concert in our country again, and I’m sure she knows about it!

#1 - GRLS FESTIVAL http://entretenimento.uol.com.br By Amanda Cavalcanti Giving her first concert in Brazil in over twelve years, the australian singer Kylie Minogue was responsible for closing the first day of the first edition of the GRLS! Festival, which took place in Sao Paulo and had a lineup composed of women only. Stating multiple times just how emotional it was for her to be back, Kylie did one hour and thirty minutes of concert, which made the brazilian audience as emotional as her. Starting a bit earlier than expected - 8:30pm, when it was originally planned to perform at 8:45 - Kylie surprised the fans who were waiting for her at the front of the stage, wearing headbands and shirts with her name since 3pm, the starting time of the festival. Surprised by the warm welcome in the first song, « Love at First Sight », Kylie confirmed that it would be « the best night ever », turning around and showing her jacket with the word « Brazil » in the back, made with crystals. The singer was surprised many times with the volume and reception of the brazilian audience during the show. « I’ve tried to prepare for this evening, but it’s not an easy task, because you’re all incredible. It’s been so long since I last performed here and I’ve always wanted to come back », she said, before starting the song rehearsed especially for them for that concert: « In My Arms », one of her biggest hits, released in 2007. The singer also conquered the audience with her charisma, which even with a big stage, dancers, band and backing vocals, was so strong that the focus was on her, she was the star of the concert. She was having as much fun as her fans, dancing and walking on stage, and even received a few requests from the audience, singing bits of her hits that they love so much, even though they were not that popular, like « Your Disco Needs You » and « Come Into My World ». Focus • Kylie In Brazil lose her humour, even when she was hit by an inflatable doll (part of her stage set-up), she laughed and continued her performance, singing « The Loco-Motion », a version of a famous Carole King song, and Kylie’s first single. She didn’t save her money for this show. During the 90-minute perfomance, the single changed outfits five times - each one adapted to the moment of the performance and the songs that were played. While she performed the disco songs from her career, she wore a blue dress, and by the end of the show, to follow her latest country-pop era, she wore a fringed shirt with buttons. The stage structure was also a show itself, with big mirrors and neon lights, besides a billboard with the word « KYLIE » in the begining. There was even a little enactment : depending on the music and their videos, the dancers and backing vocals acted with her, reliving famous moments from her career. It was a big mix of songs from Kylie’s 30+ years of career - her first album was released in 1988 but the show contained two special highlights. In the beggining of the year 2000, she released hits that got the biggest reactions from the audience, like the duet with Robbie Williams « Kids » (2000), « Slow » (2003) and the massive hit « Can’t Get You Out Of My Head » (2001)... The singer’s comeback after recovering from breast cancer in 2005, with the albums « X » (2007) and « Aphrodite » (2010) were also big moments for the fans, they went wild with the songs « In My Arms » and « All The Lovers ». Her earlier hits only made a small appearance: « Dancing », from 2018, was the only song from the last five years from her career which she performed that night. With happiness tears, the singer ended the first part of the show with « All The Lovers », and shared some tears with the public who was holding red heart-shaped balloons and screaming « Kylie, we Love You! » by the end of the song. After a few minutes of suspense, she ended the performance with « Dancing », « Come Into My World » and « Spinning Around », leaving the stage emotional after holding a brazilian flag, thrown from the public. « I hope to be back soon », she said at the last moments of the show.

#2 - GRLS FESTIVAL http://tenhomaisdiscosqueamigos.com/ By Stephanie Hahne With Kylie Minogue as conductor, GRLS Festival

celebrated females to a divided public. Despite the fact it was a premiere and the good line-up, the majority of people that were at the Memorial da América Latina were men - but it didn’t spoil the party When it was announced a few months ago, a short time before it actually took place, the GRLS, a new festival at São Paulo sounded great. And the result was also great, but it might have followed an unexpected result (or not?) by the organizers that wanted to celebrate women above it all. The first edition of the event happened last weekend at the Memorial da América Latina, with its second day on March 8th which is International Women’s day. The line-up was only composed of women, like the « Talks », lectures about women’s world in its various aspects, happening just across the street. On saturday (7th), took place the long awaited comeback of Kylie Minogue in Brazil, after twelve years of waiting, and with that, came a divided audience, with a majority of men. I wasn’t the only one who noticed it, the entire press room and even the public did too - if the festival was focusing on women, why were there more men then? We could talk about this for a very long time, and I think it might also be a subject for the production, but we can understand the presence of men for Kylie’s and Little Mix’s concerts (headlining the second night) because their fans are mostly gay. The conclusion is - to be honest - it was a good day. Between the stage, the backstage, the lighting, the press and the organization, there were more women, and I must say, everything worked just fine. Considering other events that took place at the Memorial through the years, including from the same production company, this was the most organized one. We don’t know if the festival will take place in the next years, but we sure hope so! Saturday was a solo acts day on GRLS. The party started with Linn da Quebrada, who played for a growing audience and left the stage with a standing ovation. The public sang a lot leaving her and her band emotional. Then it was time for Gaby Amarantos to talk about « the delights of the pussy », praising girl power and her line-up colleagues at all times. After her there was Ludmilla, who replaced Thierra Wack at the last minute, and it was one of the loudest shows of the event. Super happy, she even bended from the edge of the stage to hear the public singing her controversial new hit « Verdinha ». Kylie minogue doesn’t need any introduction.

Twelve years since her last concert here, the Australian diva returned with a setlist made for her hardcore brazilian fans, enjoying the gift at its fullest. The singer even entered the stage earlier than planned to have enough time to fit-in all the hits, and as always, it was a flawless performance. On Sunday the day started with a lot of struggle, good militancy and heavy sound with Mulamba. The band got the audience on the first song and made everybody repeat their polemic songs, including one against a certain president. Mc That, which came next, followed that - but a bit more subtle and with swing. The singer also protested with her soft music, which made everybody dance and clap their hands. The penultimate attraction was the always great Iza, who delivered a show full of hits and covers by black artists like Bob Marley, Gilberto Gil and Natiruts. There was also Rihanna and her rom pom pom pom on the setlist, which made the crowd sing even louder. The band which closed the GRLS was Little Mix, who came to Brazil for the first time missing one of their members. Perrie Edwards claimed health problems and didn’t come to the country. The girl was missed, but her three colleagues took the presentation on their backs with a lot of dancing, loud voices and an instant friendship with the fans who were waiting for them. They should be back soon. Thanks, GRLS!

THE LATEST NEWS ON KYLIE’s upcoming album

Kylie Minogue Documentary « The Abbey Road Sessions »

After celebrating a thirty-year long career with the release of the « Step Back In Time » Greatest Hits album and conquering the public and the media with her performance during the Legends Slot in Glastonbury, our favorite Australian is now working on a new album. « Golden » was released two years ago and all the fans are looking forward to hearing new songs. If Kylie had given a few hints regarding her new opus by saying that she wanted, after country music, to return to disco and pop, it is in a recent interview that the singer confirmed all that information regarding her 15th album. We’ve found other information on social media so it’s a perfect opportunity for us to let you know everything we’ve read on this new project !

Focus • #KM15

So, we all kind of knew that Kylie had started working on a new album, but no information had been officially confirmed… Until the end of February when CNBC broadcast an interview during which Kylie confirmed everything and told them that yes, work had started. Since then, some photos were posted on social networks, notably with Mousse T and Alex Gaudino, which, of course, got fans reacting! If in 2018 we weren’t sure what to expect when we found out that « Golden » would be a country album. In the end, the feedback from the fans was quite positive, especially thanks to the fact that Kylie managed to mix her pop style with this fairly new genre to most Australians and Europeans. Besides, I just want to add - just in case you didn’t know - that it was after a trip Kylie took to Nashville that « Golden » took this « country » direction, because the album was mainly pop at the beginning. Biffco actually shared the original version of the song « One Last Kiss » on his Instagram account. Even if some other songs were released (for example « What You Waiting For » by Sigala, which, let’s face it, went completely unnoticed in the music world) and even if Kylie really enjoyed doing this album, the singer never hid the fact that she wanted to return to her basics, with pop / dance tracks and why not some disco music.

On September 27th, 2018, the singer was interviewed by the DailyStar on her « Golden » tour and said : « I feel a bit of disco coming on next. There’s actually a big disco section in this show and we all know about it by the end because it nearly takes us all out. It’s full-on, full-tilt, so that’s where I would go at this point ». In her recent interview for CNBC, Kylie confessed : « I will no longer be country music, but songwriting will continue in the future ». before adding: « I have already started working in the studio. I don’t really know what it will look like yet, but we have the impression that it will be good and that

In other interviews, the singer had talked about the collaborations that she would like to do for this next album. Among the names she gave was Mark Ronson’s : « Mark Ronson I love, of course. He is one of many I’m interested in ». A few days later, the producer and singer said : we are heading in the right direction. It’s probably too early to say what it’s all about, but I’m very excited ». And at the end of 2019, here is what the singer said : « I’m really jazzed about [the music] to come. I think it’s going to be getting back on the dancefloor, like grown-up disco; that’s where I want it to be ». You probably also remember that several songs were deposited last year by the singer, including « Rose Is A Rose », which we thought would be available on the reissue of her best-of. In the end, these tracks haven’t been released and we don’t really know if they will be released one day or if they will be available on Kylie’s new album.

« Kylie always makes such good music, always progressive all of the time. So of course I would work with her… always. I would never turn down the chance to work with someone like that ». Another artist was also mentioned: Calvin Harris, who had already collaborated with Kylie during the « X » period and who produced « In My Arms » and « Heart Beat Rock » : « I’ve not worked with Calvin since he became Calvin Harris. I worked with him when he had to stop and have a drink because he was so nervous coming into the studio. He was still making records in his bedroom! But I would like to revisit that, his work is amazing. I did then and I still love « Acceptable in the 80s » ».

PEOPLE WHO WORK ON KM15 Here’s a little glimpse of the people who started working on the singer’s new album.

MOUSSE T

SKY ADAMS Yeahhhhh ! The producer who worked on Kylie’s « Golden » album, and in particular on « Dancing », « Stop Me From Falling », « A Lifetime To Repair » or « Live A Little » posted a photo on his social media with the caption: « 3 Days of straight fire songs!! with Kylie Minogue and Megan Cottone ! Album number two here we come! ».

Among the collaborations eagerly awaited by the fans, there is one in particular that is Mousse T. The dance producer had posted a photo of him and Kylie on his social networks with the legend « My kind of Monday... » mentioning our favourite Australian, Alex Gaudino, recording studios Sarm Studios and adding the hashtag DISCO! Most people remember Mousse T for his 90s track : « Horny » and « Sexbomb » by Tom Jones in 2000, both of which reached the top 3 charts in England. He also produced another song that ranked in the top 10 in England: « Is It Cos I’m Cool » by Emma Lanford. More recently, he worked on the remix of « Step Back In Time » for the singer’s best-of of the same name.

MEAGAN COTTONE As written in Sky Adams’ post, Meagan Cottone, author and producer, is also taking part in this new opus. She has notably worked on tracks like « Move », « Salute » and « Only You » for Little Mix or other artists such as Olly Murs, Demi Lovato, Britney Spears and Iggy Azalea, among many others.

ALEX GAUDINO Italian producer and DJ, Alex Gaudino is particularly known for his hits from 2007: « Destination Calabria » and from 2011: « What A Feeling ». He continues to release songs, as he did this year with « Remember Me », but unfortunately, it did not rank in the charts.

46 www.kylie-world.com

Laeti, March 2K20

BIFFCO It’s no surprise, Richard « Biff » Stannard is one of the first participants in this album, as we saw on August 15th, 2019 with a photo of the Kylie’s microphone and the producer’s tattoo. Biffco is one of the rare producers who has worked with the singer for so long, so we won’t be shocked to find him on her new album!

DANIEL HELOY DAVIDSEN Born in Denmark from Norwegian parents, David Heloy Davidsen is a guitarist who has worked for many artists including Selena Gomez. He also collaborated with Kylie Minogue during the « Aphrodite » era on « Get Outta My Way » and « Go Hard Or Go Home » and the « Kiss Me Once » era on the songs « Million Miles » and « Sexy Love ». He also worked on the track « Love » available on the singer’s latest album. Davidsen posted a photo on his social media with our Australian in November 2019, alongside Peter Wallevik.

PETER WALLEVIK Peter Wallevik is also credited on « Aphrodite », « Kiss Me Once », « Kylie Christmas » and « Golden » and has worked and composed for many artists such as One Direction, Demi Lovato, Olly Murs, Alesso and Little Mix.

RuMORS... Many rumours continue to appear on the internet but none have been confirmed yet. Among these rumours, the participation of Mark Ronson and Nile Rodgers, which would be incredible! As we know, Kylie’s album « Golden » changed of direction in the middle of its composition, which delayed its release. If our petite Australian is constantly working on new songs, that doesn’t necessarily mean we can hear them straight away. Some are already betting on an album release this year with a tour next year, but we really want to be cautious about that. For a few years now, Kylie has released an album every four years… Will she keep that pace? We’ll see!

& As you probably know, French Haute Couture and prêt-à-porter fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier (« JPG ») announced in January that he was « retiring from the runway ». Talking about his Couture show that took place on January 22nd, 2020 during the Paris Fashion Week, just a few days before the event he tweeted « This show celebrating 50 years of my career will also be my last. But rest assured Haute Couture will continue with a new concept ». And on March 4th, he shared this new idea on Insta « I have the pleasure to announce the new concept for my Haute Couture. Each season I will invite a designer to interpret the codes of the House », and this will start with Japanese designer Chitose Abe. Anyway, we’re here to have a look back on Jean Paul Gaultier’s most iconic and famous creations for Kylie (even though his most famous creation is probably Madonna’s cone bra for the « Blonde Ambition » tour) for different events. As a sidenote, because JPG and Kylie are really good friends, he was the one who wrote the foreword to the « Kylie Fashion book », in which we learn that the pair had met in the 90s for the opening of his first boutique in London and that it was Stephane Sednaoui who introduced them to one another. He was « struck by her beauty, her kindness, her joie de vivre and her charming and unique personality ». He also adds that when he had the opportunity to work with Kylie and William Baker for the « X Tour » (he created absolutely all her looks for this tour and the American leg of the tour), he was excited and enjoyed it a lot because Kylie knew exactly what she wanted and what she didn’t, she was « precise, professional, kind, happy and positive, very beautiful and always smiling ». He calls her « Kylie chérie » and says they have a point in common: their taste for beautiful men. Here are our 20 fave Jean Paul Gaultier outfits for Kylie (on and off stage), our absolute fave being number 1 of course.

n April 2015 Kylie attended the 5th Annual amfAR Inspiration Gala in Sao Paulo, Brazil. After having performed there, we saw her wearing this gorgeous Gaultier hybrid dress, from his Spring 2015 Haute Couture collection. Although we love the dress, we can’t help but think it’s not the best dress for our favourite petite lady.

n June 2010 Kylie appeared at the AmfAR AIDS Benefit event, with this beautiful JPG black halter dress, with little plissed spikes, which she then actually auctioned in the name of charity (AIDS Benefit). In the end, the dress went for 20 000 € (approx. £17,300). Well done Kylie! But… Wait, does that mean she didn’t have anything to wear when she left the place?

uring the « Body Language » era, Kylie went very « Brigitte Bardot » and was inspired by Parisian chic and all things French… Hence the striped Gaultier sweater for the « Slow » singles and « Body Language » album covers and for the « Money Can’t Buy » concert. In France this type of striped top has a name, it’s a « marinière » and is more or less JPG’s « trademark ».

First Kylie appears in an « oversize » flouncy fuchsia pink dress, which is actually just a kind of a Barbie doll « cape », underneath which is a sculptural shaped corset with a heart neckline and then a cage skirt. Then when Kylie comes out of the « bubble » bath, we can see she’s taken off the cage skirt, and the underneath it she’s wearing sequinned knickers.

ust before the « X 2008 Tour », Kylie appeared with this dress in the French Magazine « Numero », and she also wore it during the tour. It is a dress with a rib-cage effect. On the photo Kylie is looking all cyborg-like with weird wires coming out of her hair and her metal gloves (and looking rather scary let’s face it). Kylie had one purple dress and one black dress like this for the « X 2008 Tour ».

illiam Baker stated that « the blue dress was perfect to bring the goddess to life with its swathes of blue chiffon billowing in the « breeze » » (which was an oversized wind machine). n the « All the Lovers » video, Kylie opted for a total Gaultier look (except for the boots). She wore a slashed white tee, the JPG trademark cone-shaped bra in black and high-waisted satin « shorts » (is it OK if I say knickers instead?) from his Spring/Summer 2010 collection. Gaultier had named his lingerie-inspired collection « The G Spot ».

06 The « cut-out » white tee

K

ylie stated that this creation was just perfect because it had the grace and loveliness which was the sentiment of the song but it gave the imagery an edge. A NEW VERY HOT PHOTO

S

he heated-up the internet, and nobody expected it! A new photo of Kylie was posted on Instagram on March 8th by the singer’s makeup artist, photographer and « handyman », Christian Vermaak. We see Kylie in a red leopard print leotard, the one that she is wearing in the « Really Don’t Like You » music video which she shot in a hotel in London for her song with Tove Lo. Well, I don’t think I need to comment this photo, it speaks for itself! The leotard can be found in the Fashion part of our magazine and for your information, it costs around 400 euros.

BFI Chairman’s DINNER

O

n Monday March 3rd, Kylie and Paul Solomons attended the BFI (British Film Institute) Chairman’s dinner at Rosewood Hotel in London. The pair looked amazing (as always) and very much in love. Kylie was wearing a chic Chanel gold metallic tweed dress (from the Resort 2015 collection) that she paired with opaque tights and Paul wore a black suit and shirt that he teamed with a matching bow-tie. That night, Tilda Swinton was presented with a prestigious BFI Fellowship. The 59-year-old star was recognised for being a « daringly eclectic performer and filmmaker » during the Fellowship Annual Dinner. It had been announced in January that Tilda had been chosen to be awarded the British Film Institute’s highest honour for her contribution to « film culture, independent film exhibition and philanthropy ». Just after the event, Kylie tweeted pics of her and Paul with the caption: « Tilda Swinton shone as bright as ever accepting her BFI Fellowship. A room full of so much love and admiration. Thrilled to be there to celebrate you Tilda ».

AN INSTA LIVE WITH KYLIE And DANNI ?

A

s we are all confined, it is difficult for some of us who are under partial (or total) unemployment not to be bored. Fortunately, some personalities have understood our boredom (and must also be bored) and the number of live events on social networks have exploded. Some artists are offering new versions of their songs on Facebook Live or discuss with their fans for example. They do everything they can to stay busy and to change people’s minds. On this occasion, Kylie’s sister, Dannii, did several live chats on Instagram with her fans. She also did a video mentioning that she’d love to have a live chat with fans and her sister, Kylie. But apparently Dannii seems to be having a bit of trouble convincing her sister, as she asked the fans to send Kylie, well actually, to « bombard » her with messages so that this live chat could come true. This request is from last week, so it seems that K has decided to confine herself in a cave because she hasn’t responded nor reacted at all at this invitation. Come on Kylie, times are really tough, please think of us! 60 www.kylie-world.com

Former manager sues Sussan over Kylie Minogue impersonator « humiliation »

T

his is probably the weirdest story (sort of) linked to Kylie we have in store for you this month. A 47-year old man called Ian Richard Billington, who is a former manager at women’s fashion label « Sussan » says he was coerced into dancing with a Kylie Minogue impersonator in front of his work colleagues during one of the company’s awards ceremonies and is now suing his former employer for $800,000, claiming the incident caused him « nervous shock and psychological injury ». Apparently, during the ceremony, the Kylie impersonator called him on stage twice, and on the second request he alleges that he was either coerced with « woo-hoos » or physically impelled to go on stage despite making it clear he didn’t want to. Once on stage, he was asked personal and humiliating questions by the impersonator, including his marital status and about the presence of his wife (the applicant being in a homosexual relationship). He states he was then asked if he liked to wear leather hotpants and directed to go backstage to be dressed by a female dancer in clothing that was humiliating and belittling, and then he was required to go back on stage and sing. His claim says: « As a result of the said injuries the plaintiff has since only been able to work over the phone with limited face-to-face contact working a maximum of 18 hours a week ».

Since then, he claims the experience has caused him panic attacks, agoraphobia, memory and concentration impairment, sleep disturbance, tremors and shakes, « tics and twitches » and anger. He also states that he was pulled and pushed by other employees from the edge of the dance floor across it until he was about a metre from the edge of the stage adjacent to the dancefloor. Anyway he is asking the County Court to award him special damages just shy of $800,000 for lost past and future income. Sussan rejected Mr Billington’s assertions, saying he got on stage of his own volition and, to the extent that he may have been compelled, it was not reasonably foreseeable he would suffer a psychiatric illness. We can’t help but feel sorry for this guy, but this goes to prove that no Kylie impersonator will ever be as good and kind as the lady herself. 61 www.kylie-world.com

UK TOP 100 WOMAN ALBUM

F

or Women’s Day, the very famous English site Official Charts wanted to pay tribute to women in the music industry by publishing the ranking of the 100 biggest albums of women singers of the last two decades. Unsurprisingly, Adele is in the first place with her second album « 21 » which sold more than 5.12 million copies (this includes physical sales and streamings). In second position there is Amy Winehouse with « Back To Black » and in third position, Adele again, this time with her album released in 2015, « 25 » (the album names are quite easy to remember with this singer, the title is simply… her age!). Among the other women at the top, we find Lady Gaga with « The Fame » in 6th place, Dido with « No Angel » is 7th, Rihanna is in 12th and 13th place with « Loud » and « Good Girl Gone Bad » and… Kylie Minogue is in 25th place with her album « Fever » and this, in front of Madonna who is 27th with « Music »! The best-of « Ultimate Kylie » is also ranked 64th, ahead of « Born This Way » by Lady Gaga. And speaking of that, on March 8th, it was International Women’s Day 2020, which is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. Of course that Sunday, many female music stars took social media to celebrate female rights, such as Lady Gaga, Kelly Rowland, Jenny Lewis, Ellie Goulding, Mariah Carey, Shakira and obviously, Kylie. On Instagram, she posted a pic of herself and sister Dannii when they were little girls, in their mum’s arms with the caption : « My leading ladies! #internationalwomensday #Mum @danniiminogue ». O

the most unforgettable Australian TV moment

nline newspaper Guardian Australia recently asked readers for the moments of Australian TV history they’ll never forget - for better or worse. There were initially more than a thousand nominations, and it ended up with the 50 most popular. There were 13 000 votes in total and believe it or not (because it was ages ago, right?) Scott and Charlene’s wedding on Neighbours ended up at the fifth place! The Guardian reminds us that the wedding was watched by more than 2 million Australians and 19.6 million Brits. Talking about this unforgettable TV moment, in a recent interview, Australian rock singer-songwriter Angry Anderson - whose biggest hit is the song « Suddenly » which was played during Scott and Charlene’s wedding - revealed how Kylie Minogue chose his song for this scene. « The story that Kylie told me is that Mushroom that supplied all the music to Neighbours, gave her a bunch of records to choose a wedding song from. They were trying to push a couple of tracks, one by a very high profile female artist and another by a very high profile male artist they had, but Kylie chose « Suddenly » because she fell in love with it ».

his is the weirdest news we’ve come accross this month, which surprised everyone but which also delighted some fans who maybe have a rather (very) strong addiction to alcohol (or maybe it’s ‘cause we’re all stuck home and can’t wait to get drunk at the end of all of this). Our little Australian is in discussion to launch a brand of wine by the end of the year… To be honest, we weren’t really expecting it but according to some rumours, she would like to have her own bottles and hopes to seduces fans who are older... We already know that it will not be only the elderly who will be happy with these news though !

KYLIE AND THE 35 YEARS OF THE NEIGHBOURS SERIES

n March 20th, Neighbours already celebrated its 35th anniversary... For the broadcast of this episode on the anniversary of the series, a wink was made to Kylie. Indeed, we saw two characters, Jane Harris and Des Clarke, get married, which reminds us of the wedding of our Australian girl at the time... But in addition to that, the series decided to broadcast the song « Golden » during this moment! Several fans of the series (and of course, Kylie) noted this, and found this wink pretty awesome, and we couldn’t agree more ! 62 www.kylie-world.com

KYLIE TO RELEASE A RANGE OF WINE ?

RECORD STORE DAY 2020

s you know, every year there is the Record Store Day, a special day designed primarily for independent record stores to encourage people to visit their shops. It’s the perfect occasion for people to find many exclusive vinyls, because you can only find most of them on that particular day and you won’t be able to find them elsewhere afterwards. If the event was supposed to take place this year on April 18th, it was postponed to June because of the Coronavirus outbreak, which is everywhere in the world now. If this decision makes total sense, what is unfortunate for us is that this year we could have found a new 12’’ vinyl of the song of Kylie and Giorgio Moroder, « Right Here Right Now » with two Kenny Summit remixes never released before… but now we’ll have to wait until we can go and get our copies in stores ! JAKE SHEARS talks about NEIGHBOURS, new music and possible Scissor Sisters reunion

O

ne of Kylie’s super friends, American singer and songwriter Jake Shears (best known as the male lead singer of American pop/rock band Scissor Sisters, even though they have stopped doing music together in 2012) was recently interviewed by NME about his new single called « Meltdown » and his forthcoming new album. He says his lyrics will be more abstract and poetic, that he’s got some f*** amazing songs up his sleeve, he talks about TikTok (he doesn’t seem to like it a lot) and his admiration for David Bowie. But, for the Kylie fanbase, the most interesting bit was that he stated that there are « some collaborations » on his upcoming record, heavily hinting that another collab with Kylie Minogue could be on the way! When asked about it, he said : « I love being in the studio with someone like Kylie who you love and respect… but you’ll just have to find out! All will be revealed, in due course! ».

He also hinted he isn’t against the idea of making music with the Scissor Sisters again in the future. Additionally, Jake recently appeared as the Unicorn on the UK version of The Masked Singer and made an appearance on Neighbours! NME asked him if he had asked Kylie any advice before going on the set. « No, I didn’t ask her for any advice. I’ll definitely send it to her for a laugh. I’m sure I’m probably terrible! I mean, soap opera stuff is like guerrilla film-making – it doesn’t matter if it’s bad or good, that’s it, they’re moving on ».

We wonder what Kylie will think about Jake’s appearance. Imagine how funny it would have been if they had taken part in an episode together. #Priceless.

KENNY ROGERS’ death

I

t is very sad news that we learned on March 20th, the death of Kenny Rogers, one of the most famous country music singers in the world. If his name is not unknown to you, it’s quite normal, because the artist and actor worked with Dolly Parton (who was the inspiration for Kylie’s album « Golden ») and they recorded a track together « Islands In The Stream », which our Australian played during the « Kylie Presents Golden » promo tour. Kenny Rogers died at the age of 81 and Dolly Parton posted a message on her social media :

« You never know how much you love somebody until they’re gone. I’ve had so many wonderful years and wonderful times with my friend Kenny, but above all the music and the success, I loved him as a wonderful man and a true friend. So you be safe with God and just know that I will always love you, Dolly ».

A NEW DISCO ALBUM FOR dua lipa

D

on’t worry, yes you’re still reading the Kylie Times, not the Dua Times, but we wanted to talk to you quickly about Dua Lipa, who released her new album « Future Nostalgia » a few days ago. The album has been critically acclaimed and already stated as being possibly the best album of the decade to come, just that! If we wanted to mention it, it is because many sites have already compared this new material with Kylie’s music. Indeed, popular critic Pitchfork said : « The ascendant singer’s star-making second album is a collection of sophisticated, hard-bodied pop-funk that gives way to slick, Kylie Minogue-inspired disco ».

while Billboard said about the track « Hallucinate » : « « Hallucinate » borrows Kylie Minogue’s euphoric ‘90s dance formula and sends you straight to heaven. Strictly meant for listeners to dance their heart out in the middle of the dancefloor, its funky melody is topped with a dollop of Lady Gaga’s « Poker Face »-esque mum mum mum mah’s ». So now we’ll let you listen to the album, don’t hesitate to tell us what you think about it and if you hope that Kylie is going on this direction for her album! 63 www.kylie-world.com

KYLIE, PAUL, AND THE prince charles

anic on board! On March 25th, Kylie’s boyfriend Paul posted a photo on social media of him with Kylie and Prince Charles. A few hours before that, we’d been informed that Prince Charles had Coronavirus... And, so of course everyone wondered if Kylie has also been affected... (Can I just mention the fact that under that photo, a lot of people asked news about Kylie, but no one seemed to worry about Paul’s health...). Apparently, Kylie met with Prince Charles at Mansion House in London on March 12th at a dinner organized in support of recent firefighting efforts in Australia. If we count the incubation time of the Coronavirus, then of course, it’s logical to wonder if the singer got it, but the barrier gestures were applied, as we can see in the photo (safety distances and no hand shaking). Kylie posted a message on her social media saying that she was thinking of everyone affected by the virus.

A few days later, a video of the singer appeared and was posted by the Saturday Night Takeaway, which rebroadcast a best-of with the appearance of the singer. She also left a message to the nursing staff thanking them for their efforts. Kylie did not cough in the video and looked pretty fine, so we are pretty sure Paul and her are in good health (phew).

ali oetjen responds to kylie minogue’s comparisons

S

trictly speaking, this is not news about Kylie but as it’s Kylie-related we wanted to mention it. Have you all heard of « The Bachelorette » which initially was an American reality television show? If not, then it’s a show about a single woman who gets a chance to date various men over a period of several weeks and decide whom she will marry. Well, in the Australian version, the Bachelorette of 2018, called Ali Oetjen, has just released her first single « Never Knew Love Like This Before » (a pop version of the ‘80s hit from American RnB singer Stephanie Mills) and her vocals have been compared to Kylie’s already. Ali stated: « I think people are saying that the song sounds like Kylie Minogue is singing it because they can’t mean that I sound like Kylie Minogue (sorry, what???)… She is the ultimate pop diva so I’m so humbled to be compared to her. She has all the moves and she’s a little pocket rocket. She’s happy and a genuine down to earth. She’s a good Aussie role model for women ». Well, Lovers we’ve listened to the song and honestly, we think her voice has absolutely nothing to do with Kylie’s so we’re just wondering how/where people hear similarities! If you haven’t heard it, please go listen to it and tell us what you think. Isa and Laeti, March 2K20

THE BEST TRACKS OF THE 2000S ACCORDING TO THE BILLBOARD

T

he team of the Billboard site, which works on music rankings in the United States, published a ranking of the best tracks of the 2000s according to them. Inevitably, we searched a bit inside the article to see if Kylie was present - something quite rare if we talk about the United States - and you know what… The singer is ranked in 78th position with her track « Spinning Around », which did not yet not ranked in the US charts! Here’s the note from the Billboard:

« While some saw a new millennium as an opportunity to create music unlike anything anyone had ever heard before, Australian superstar Kylie Minogue took a different approach. With « Spinning Around », the songstress nailed the classic, disco-inspired Europop sound that would carry her into the 21st century, and went on to see massive success just about everywhere (except America, which sadly would take a couple more years to catch on). The track’s danceable melodies and irresistible beat proved that all spinning aside, you don’t have to reinvent the wheel to show people a good time ». For information, in the top three in the ranking there is Destiny’s Child in first place with « Say My Name », NSYNC with « Bye-Bye » and Britney Spears with « Oops I Did It Again ».

A PARODY OF « MATE SONG »

ylie shared on her social networks a parody of the advertisement she starred in for Australian tourism, which was produced by the citizens of Balonne Shire county, in Queensland, Australia. People living in this region have indeed experienced torrential rains recently, after being struck by drought. The purpose of this ad was initially a project to help the city and finally became a real viral advertising campaign of the region which recalls what life looks like after the drought happened. In the video, Lucy Sevil plays the role of Kylie and Ben Gardner the role of Adam Hills. Several sections are quite similar to the real advert of our favourite Australian which is quite funny. We are thinking in particular of the moment with the quokka which is replaced here by a wombat. If you want to see the funny video, go to the Facebook page of St George And Surrounds. We really advise you to go and watch it, it’s really worth it and it’s really well done!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY PAUL !

n April 2nd, Kylie’s boyfriend Paul Solomons celebrated his 46th birthday. The singer wished him a happy birthday on social media by posting a photo of the two of them in front of a sunset with the caption: « Birthday kisses and love to this one Mr Solomons, 46 today! #birthdayboy (A pic from waaaaay back when he was 45! ) ». These birthday kisses and love don’t really respect the barrier gestures but oh well! Happy birthday Paul!

10 Actors You Probably Forgot that Were In Doctor Who BY WILL ASHTON (CINEMABLEND.COM)

For nearly 60 years, Doctor Who has remained a staple of British television. The series, centered around an extraterrestrial Time Lord known as The Doctor who flies around in his time-traveling police box, the TARDIS, with several different human companions and in several different incarnations, is beloved by many and a series with the convenience of being rebooted constantly for new generations and times. Therefore, over the course of its very extensive run, several famous actors (and soon-to-be famous actors) have worked on the sci-fi show. With a cast that included hundreds of actors over the course of several decades, it’s understandable if you forgot that these familiar faces once appeared on the program. Therefore, let’s get in our own mini TARDISes Felicity Jones (or however you pluralize the word TARDIS) and go back Before she became an Oscar nominee through through the show’s long history and recall who once apher performance in 2014’s The Theory of Everypeared on Doctor Who. thing, and before she was seen in a galaxy far, far away in 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Felicity Jones could be seen in Doctor Who’s Season 4, Episode 7, « The Unicorn and the Wasp ». In this installment, Jones played Robina Redmond, a.k.a. Ada Mullins, a.k.a. « The Unicorn », a cockney master jewelry thief who is later questioned by the Doctor and Agatha Christie. This 2008 episode of the series might’ve served as some viewers’ introduction to the actress before she became a big star. Andrew Garfield Before he played Eduardo Saverin in The Social Network, Desmond Doss in Hacksaw Ridge, or Peter Parker/Spider-Man in The Amazing Spider-Man movies, Andrew Garfield was a rising British talent who branched out in a big way when he appeared in two Season 3 episodes of Doctor Who. In the popular sci-fi series, Garfield played the part of Frank, an intelligent-but-poor young man living in New York City in 1930, during the Great Depression, who helped the Doctor fight against the dreaded Daleks in their attempt to destroy the world in « Daleks in Manhattan » and « Evolution Of the Daleks ».

Simon Pegg An actor/screenwriter best known for his work in the Cornetto trilogy — Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World’s End — as well as his roles in the Star Trek and Mission: Impossible cinematic franchises, Simon Pegg is an exceptional talent who has established himself in a number of nerd-friendly properties. Suffice to say, it shouldn’t be a shock to know that in 2005, just a year after Shaun of the Dead became a cult favorite around the world, he made an appearance

Kylie In The Press • March in Doctor Who. Specifically, he was seen in Episode 7 of Season 1 as the sinister The Editor in « The Long Game » a role that was notably different than what audiences saw from the Shaun of the Dead and Spaced actor prior. Hell, it’s more cold-blooded than the characters we are used to seeing from the affable actor today. It was another showcase of Pegg’s undervalued versatility, proving once more how vast his talents are.

den and Carpool Karaoke, but the actor/television personality first grew prominence in the U.K., and it shouldn’t be a shock to know that he starred in an episode of Doctor Who. Specifically, Corden can be seen in Episodes 11, « The Lodger », and 12, « Closing Time », of Season 6, where he played the role of Craig Owens, a man who rented a room to the Doctor and later helped him defeat the Cybermen. In return, the Doctor helped Craig confess his feelings to his friend, Sophie. During his time on the show, Craig and Doctor Who shared a close and personal friendship. While not quite as known in the U.S. back in 2010, James Corden was quite a big name in Britain on both the telly and on the stage when these episodes aired. So, in that sense, Corden was considered a big guest star for the series.

Olivia Colman Before she became an Oscar-winning actress through her fantastic performance in The Favourite, and well before she took over the leading role on Netflix’s The Crown, Olivia Colman was a hard-working character actress who certainly accredited a number of movies and television shows to her name throughout the years. One such show was Doctor Who, where Colman played a mother and a form of Patient Zero in the first episode of Season 5, « The Eleventh Hour ». It’d certainly be understandable if you forget that Colman was in the show, though. She played such a small part, her character didn’t even have a name. Furthermore, Olivia Colman’s name was even misspelled in the credits, calling her « Olivia Coleman ». Admittedly, showrunner Steven Moffat claims they « wasted » the award-winning actress by giving her such a small role through this guest star appearance. It’s safe to say that things worked out for the actress, though. In addition to this minor part in the proceedings, Colman read the audiobook version of The Forgotten Army.

Carey Mulligan Before she became an Oscar-nominated actress for An Education, and appeared in movies like Never Let Me Go, Shame, The Great Gatsby, and Inside Llewyn Davis, Carey Mulligan could be seen in the 2007 Doctor Who episode, « Blink ». In the Season 3, Episode 10 installment of the popular science-fiction series, Mulligan played Sally Sparrow, a photographer in London who encountered the Weeping Angels and indirectly helped Doctor Who in a mission. It came a curious time in Mulligan’s career. It was shortly after she grew prominence for 2005’s Pride and Prejudice but a couple years before the actress would become a household name through her Oscar-nominated lead performance in the aforementioned Best Picture-nominated 2009 drama, An Education.

In the Season 1, Episode 2 installment, Kaluuya served as the protagonist of the episode, which means that for many Doctor Who fans, this installment likely served as their introduction to the rising talent — a nice glimpse at his That Never Was, in « Last of the Time Lords », the great acting talents years before he made it big. 13th episode of Season 3. While he was referenced or alluded to again in a few other later episodes, this episode was his one and only role in Doctor Who (for now, at least). He played this part before he became a household name through his leading role in Lucifer, and there have been some fans eager to see Ellis play the part of Doctor Who in a future incarnation. Both Joe Henderson, the co-showrunner of Lucifer, and Ellis himself have responded to this request.

Kylie Minogue The Australian actress/musician known for constantly reinventing herself, Kylie Minogue fans have seen the artist take her career in a number of places. One such destination was the set of Doctor Who, where Minogue played Astrid Peth in the Season 4 premiere, « Voyage of the Damned ». 11 celebrities who don’t want to get married

No, thank you

Those who admitted it, or those who are willing to (or have already changed) their minds. BY JONAH WATERHOUSE (HARPERSBAZAAR.COM.AU)

For many people, marriage is the ideal end goal for a relationship—but despite the ubiquitousness of the concept, others prefer romantic connections that are less set in stone. Plenty of celebrities have their own reasons for not wanting to get married—whether they’d prefer to stay single, or believe their already-existing relationships work better without adding legality into the mix. Other major names have even changed their minds on marriage over the years, shifting their focuses from a happily single, monogamy-free lifestyle into craving their own « happily ever after ». Here are 11 major celebrities who prove that the concept of marriage and a cookie-cutter wedding day aren’t for everyone.

Charlize Theron Though she was engaged to actor Sean Penn between 2014 and 2015, Theron later admitted that she actually never wanted to get married, and that it’s something people are oddly surprised by. In a 2019 interview with Glamour, the Bombshell actress explained: « I haven’t been in a relationship for a very long time. I never wanted to get married. Those are things that are not hard for me, because they’re innately my truth. I find that people are somewhat perplexed by that, and also more with women, right? ».

Eva Mendes Mendes is famously in a long-term, very private relationship with Ryan Gosling, and they share two children together. They’ve also never been married, and Mendes has openly shared her thoughts on the concept of getting hitched. In a 2011 interview on talk show Chelsea Lately, she said :

« I love the idea of a union—that’s all very beautiful. But I think, you know, it’s a very old-fashioned, archaic kind of thing. We did it for land originally—how unromantic is that? I actually think it’s really sexy to be with someone in your fifties and sixties and be like, « That’s my boyfriend ». I think husband and wife is just… very unsexy ».

Cameron Diaz She may now be married to Benji Madden, but Cameron Diaz was never disposed to the idea of marriage, telling Maxim in 2011: « I think we have to make our own rules. I don’t think we should live our lives in relationships based off of old traditions that don’t suit our world any longer ». When Gwyneth Paltrow quizzed Diaz about her change of mind at a Goop conference in 2019, the The Holiday star said: « I think it was just a matter of I hadn’t met my husband yet, you know? I had boyfriends before. And there’s a really, really distinct difference between husbands and boyfriends ».

Oprah Winfrey Legendary mogul and talk show host Oprah Winfrey has been in a relationship with her partner, Stedman Graham, since the mid-’80s, but has admitted a marriage simply wouldn’t have worked for her. In a 2020 issue of O Magazine, Winfrey explained that she wanted a marriage, but: « didn’t want the sacrifices, the compromises, the day-in-day-out commitment that was required to make a marriage work ». She also explained that a marriage would’ve interfered with her work on The Oprah Winfrey Show, which was basically her life.

Kylie Minogue Minogue is another star who admits she never prioritised marriage. In a 2018 interview with Red magazine, Minogue admitted: « I never thought I would get married. Just going through « being engaged » seems like an experiment, because I’d never as a girl or in all my life had a vision of getting married ». Though the « Spinning Around » singer was briefly engaged to actor Joshua Sasse between 2016 and 2017, she continued: « Now I’m going to stick to my previous view. I don’t think marriage is for me ».

Whoopi Goldberg Whoopi Goldberg is a decorated actress and talk show host (as well as being one of only a few stars who has won a Grammy, an Oscar, an Emmy and a Tony Award), and quite frankly, couldn’t care less about tying the knot. In a 2016 interview with The New York Times, Goldberg gave a blunt statement on her refusal to marry, saying: « I don’t want somebody in my house ». She later added: « I’m the round peg, and marriage is the square hole. You can’t have a square hole, can you? ».

Kourtney Kardashian Despite having three children together, Kourtney Kardashian’s reluctance to marry her ex-partner, Scott Disick, became a prominent storyline on episodes of Keeping Up with the Kardashians. Disick even proposed to his then-girlfriend in 2011, but she declined. Though the 40-year-old entrepreneur has given no quotes on her reluctance to wed, it’s likely that she’s just happy without marriage. On top of that, the star frequently implores that her children Mason, Penelope and Reign are her « top priority ».

Kristin Davis Davis’s SATC character, Charlotte York, literally converted to Judaism for the man of her dreams, but the actress is much less fussed about the idea of marriage in real life. In a 2008 TV interview, the mother-of-two said:

was never one of those girls. It’s not that I wouldn’t do it, but I don’t see that I must do it or be unhappy. I’m perfectly happy [with] my single self right now ».

Tracee Ellis Ross By now, we all know Tracee Ellis Ross as a posterwoman for the « happily single » lifestyle. In a 2020 interview with Oprah Winfrey on her 2020 « Vision tour », the Black-ish star explained that she can get married if she wants to, but that for now, she’s « happily single. Choicefully, gloriously single ». Ellis Ross has never openly expressed that she doesn’t want marriage, but rather, that she’s wholly content with single life. In the same interview, she said: « Like many of us, I was taught to grow up dreaming of my wedding and not of my life. And I spent many years dreaming of my wedding and also waiting to be chosen. Well, here’s the thing— I’m the chooser and I can choose to get married if I want to ».

Winona Ryder ‘90s icon Winona Ryder, who now stars in Netflix’s Stranger Things, has reportedly been in an eight-year relationship with her partner, Scott MacKinlay Hahn, and is very happy to avoid adding marriage into the mix. In a 2016 interview with Porter, the star said of marriage: « I’d rather never have been married than been divorced a few times. Not that there’s anything wrong with divorce, but I don’t think I could do it if that was a possibility. When your parents are madly in love for 45 years, your standards are really high ».

Goldie Hawn Oscar-winning actress Goldie Hawn is renowned for her famously sunny outlook on life, and has been in a relationship with her actor partner, Kurt Russell, for over 36 years. In a 2016 appearance on the British talk show Loose Women, Hawn explained that avoiding marriage was actually the secret to her enduring relationship with Russell (she was already married twice before meeting him). In her words : « I would have been long-divorced if I ever married [Kurt] ».

Not since the very start of her career had Kylie been as successful in Australia as she was in the early 2000s and « Fever » became the highest-selling album of her career, going seven times platinum locally. The album’s second single followed « Can’t Get You Out Of My Head » by debuting at number 1, but quickly fell down the chart, spending only nine weeks in the top 50.

Kylie shifted gears musically on ninth album « Body Language », incorporating elements of R&B, electroclash and hip-hop into her dance-pop sound. That was evidenced on lead single « Slow », a pulsating synthpop tune that steered clear of a big pop chorus for a more sensual groove, brought to life in the visually stunning music video filmed at a Barcelona swimming pool. The result: another instant number 1.

Her first new music since her breast cancer diagnosis and treatment in 2005, and her triumphant return to performing with the « Showgirl: The Homecoming Tour » the following year, « 2 Hearts » reinstalled Kylie to the top of the singles chart. The song was a remake of a little-known track by electronic duo Kish Mauve, who also produced Kylie’s version. To date, it is her last single to reach number 1 in Australia.

That operating EBITDA was up 13.1% on the prior year’s haul of €122m, and represented a profit margin of 23.0% (up on 22.5% in 2018). Impressively, BMG’s Euro-level revenues in 2019 (€600m) were up by 61.7% on the equivalent annual figure from as recently as 2015. Exactly half of BMG’s annual revenues (€300m / $337m) last year were generated in the United States, with the UK its second most lucrative territory (€99m / $111m). Some €46m ($52m) was generated in Germany, with a further €34m ($38m) in France and €65m ($73m) in other (non-UK) European territories.

BMG generated €53m ($60m) in countries outside of the United States, UK and Europe in 2019. The company had an average of 883 global employees during 2019, with 904 at year end. BMG spent €80m ($90m) on investments in 2019 – including, obviously, the acquisition of rights – versus €107m in 2018. The share of BMG’s total revenues (across publishing and records) attributable to digital formats rose to 56% in 2019, up on 52% in 2018. Bertelsmann’s annual report, issued today (March 24) names BMG’s expansion in Asia – via the opening of a new HQ in Hong Kong – as an operational highlight in 2019, in addition to other expansions in Latin America and Canada. It adds: « In the recordings business, BMG outpaced the market’s growth in key territories such 72 www.kylie-world.com

as the United Kingdom, where album sales were up nearly 12% in a declining market, and the United States, where its music streaming business grew 62%, nearly three times as much as the industry as a whole ». Successful recorded music releases for BMG in 2019, says Bertelsmann, included those by artists such as Jason Aldean, Blanco Brown, Keith Richards, Dido, The Cranberries, Andy Grammer, AJR and Lil Dicky. BMG also signed new record contracts with The Shires, Natalie Imbruglia, Rufus Wainwright, KSI, Huey Lewis & The News, Seeed and Richard Marx, among others. Should Have Been Bigger: Kylie Minogue’s Majestic « The One » BY MIKE WASS (IDOLATOR.COM)

In this franchise, we look back on songs that deserved a little more love and attention. A little wacky at times (« Nu-di-ty ») with an intensely frustrating tracklist (don’t get me started on the era’s incredible bonus tracks and B-Sides), Kylie Minogue’s « X » is still one of the best albums of the ’00s. Songs like « In My Arms », « Like A Drug », « Wow » and « Stars » are pop perfection, but even they are slightly overshadowed by « The One ». Co-produced by Richard « Biff » Stannard and Freemasons, the dreamy banger is actually a cover. Or, more accurately, a reworking of Laid’s similarly-titled 2006 floorfiller. New verses were added and tweaks were made, resulting in a majestic electro-pop anthem that feels destined for Kylie. « Starlight shimmers everywhere, there’s a certain something in the air », the pop icon coos over cascading synths. « Can you feel what I feel in me? It’s in the air, electricity ». That leads to one of the simplest, yet most effective and oddly heartbreaking, choruses of all time. « I’m the one », our heroine pleads. « Love me, love me, love me, love me ». A throwback to a time when pop was allowed to be soft and sophisticated, this tune stands toe-totoe with any smash hit in the enduring diva’s discography. Which makes the fact that it underperformed on

the charts all the more head-scratching. After considerable delay and cancelation of the then still-important CD single, « The One » was released as the fourth cut from X in mid-2008 with little fanfare. The song stalled at number 36 in the UK, ending Kylie’s run of 16 consecutive top 10 hits stretching back to the year 2000. Lack of label support and a video that looks like it was filmed on an iPhone before it was trendy certainly played a part, but « The One » simply didn’t reach enough ears. Happily, the song’s stature has grown over time and « The One » is now a staple of Kylie’s live show. The brilliant remixes also live on wherever there’s a dance floor and a DJ with taste.

Interviews • March

CNBC conversation END of February worldwide We already touched base with you about this in the last edition of our magazine but here are more details. Kylie was interviewed by Julianna Tatelbaum for CNBC end of February, for the show « CNBC Conversation », and here’s what was said. Do you have any advice for emerging female artists that perhaps you wish you were given when you were starting out in your career? KM : When I started, I didn’t know anything about anything, I do consider myself very fortunate that I got through it OK and I would say that is down to, not only the people that I encountered, but the way that I was raised, my manager who’s very protective and considerate, but definitely the way my mum raised me and my sister. There was never a question of « can you do this as a female or not? » everything was possible. So my advice to them would be try to be true to yourself and the beautiful thing that I’ve discovered is experience, there’s no shortcut to learning a craft. Some people are blessed, they seem to have it all from the outset. I didn’t, I had to learn. I fell over so many times, I was pushed down so many times, but you have to find your way to get through that. If you look ahead, is there anything left that you want to achieve? KM: There’s so much more! I’m asked this all the time. I guess when I was younger I would say « Yeah I’d like to do this, I really look forward to making a second album or doing more acting » or

whatever it is… But I think I have even more drive now because what’s done is done, especially at this point in time, having had this year celebrating all of that. Who knows what’s around the corner but I feel like there’s so many things that have not yet been done, whether it’s a style of music, a collaboration, a film, an experience. My eyes are always excited about what’s around the corner. You’re just coming off of an epic tour which included of course your iconic… KM : I’m exhausted (laughs). Well I don’t blame you especially after that iconic appearance at Glastonbury which I understand was the most watched performance in the festival’s history? KM: As you’re saying it, it’s so hard for me to even fathom the fact that I did it, that it went well, that the response to it was so beautiful - I hadn’t really thought about that because I was so stressed, and excited about it of course - I was just focused about getting there and doing it and I hadn’t thought about what would happen afterwards. And it turns out what did happen and what is still happening is just this feeling of celebration and ownership of, for some people the entirety of my career, for others they go « oh I 74 www.kylie-world.com

know that bit, or I know that bit » and it’s 31 years together so it’s done something that seems to transcend a concert and an audience interaction. Is that what was going through your head when you got on stage and you looked out? KM : No. I can’t tell you what I was thinking actually. I think I went to a bit of a blank space. Right before going on I did think « there’s no turning back, this is happening ». You recently said that you’re always hypercritical of yourself and you just mentioned you felt a little bit anxious coming into this performance and perhaps suggesting that maybe you felt it wasn’t good enough. KM : I know. I wish I’d never said it because it’s kind of blown out of proportion. I come off every show, and without fail I do it, whether it’s a TV performance, leaving a studio… It will be a case of going through on every department what went well, what didn’t hit the mark, what we were not expecting that was awesome - and we note « let’s do that again » - so it’s a deep brief of the show and Glastonbury was just a blur and a such a whirlwind of emotions, like a sensory overload. So I did the usual thing and then after a while like for every performance Isa, March 2K20

you go « that’s done » and then you let the good things come in. With the last year being pretty much a retrospective year and a celebratory year I feel like it has been a real celebration with fans. We’re all getting older, we’re all nostalgic but I’m now ready, and I’ve already started working in the studio. We don’t know quite what it is yet but we’re like « oh that’s good », « this is the direc-

tion we’re heading ». It’s probably too early to say what it is, but I’m very excited. The « Golden » album is pretty country infused. Are there any genres that particularly excite you or that you want to try to incorporate into the Kylie sound of the future? KM : l certainly didn’t see that country element coming but I loved every second of it. I got to

spend two weeks in Nashville and I was fully focused, I barely did sightseeing, shopping, anything. I ate, slept and wrote, it was all about music. Some of the lessons I learnt there will certainly stay with me. It’s unlikely there’s going to be a trash album or anything like that but I wouldn’t mind a trash band covering one of my songs because I appreciate all types of music.

UOL MARCH 4th, 2020 BRazil Three days before Kylie headlined the GRLS!Festival in Sao Paulo, UOL (Universo Online, which is a Brazilian web content) published an interview they had with Kylie via email. In the introduction, they talk about the fact that Kylie had not appeared in the country since 2008 (in 2015 she did a show there but it was a closed event), about her appearance at Glastonbury, about the « Step Back In Time - The Definitive Collection » compilation, about the fact she won a lawsuit against Kylie Jenner over the « Kylie » trademark, and that she still likes to party. by Liv Brandão

Recently, Shakira (43) and Jennifer Lopez (50) had a praised show at the Super Bowl break. As a 51-year-old woman in pop music, how do you feel about seeing other mature women having such a great place in showbiz? KM : Naturally, I think it’s wonderful! The power of their performance is due, in part, to their experience. If they had performed at the Super Bowl 20 years ago, it would have been a very different show. Personally, I think we should celebrate all ages in music. It would be very wrong to feel that you cannot explore, create and share any kind of music after

a certain age. How did you feel when you revisited your career to put together this collection? What do you feel when you look at your musical past? KM : Where do I start? More than 30 years have passed, so I have lived so much! The uncertainty and excitement of a girl recording her first demo without a record deal, my first live performances, the stratospheric reach of « Can’t Get You Out Of My Head », the many hours in studios, international tours, the Glastonbury? I could go on forever… I suppose the big difference for me is that I know all the 75 www.kylie-world.com

parts between public moments. There were incredible highs and, of course, the lows. Overall, I liked looking at my career when putting together the collection and it just made me even more excited to make new songs and have new experiences! In your latest studio albums you have mixed several styles: country, new wave, disco, electro, ballads. What is next? What are your plans? KM : I’m going back to the dance floors! I’ve been recording since last year. The search for sound and songs is always a challenge, but it is also a lot of fun. Isa, March 2K20

Are you better known for party music, are you partying? KM : My party times now tend to happen unexpectedly. I used to just go out, go out, go out! But music still manages to get me out of the house and stay out of it for a long time after what I should have come back for. You had an incredible 2019: a successful world tour, you were Glastonbury’s attraction and you broke a record. How do you evaluate what happened to you in the past year? KM : Let’s say I was very grateful to be able to rest after all this! The years 2018 and 2019 were a success. In a recent interview, you said that your memories of Glastonbury were blurry, and that you thought your show had not been good enough (even though it was the most watched perfor-

mance in the history of the festival). Why is that? KM: We had some sound problems, which is perfectly normal when you arrive and play (without sound check) and I was obsessed with them for a while. So I started looking at the show, the whole experience, and let go of minor issues that no one but me and my team would know had happened. After every show - and I really mean every show - I analyze what worked, what happened unexpectedly and was incredible. « Was the new « test » part we added good or bad? ». It is always a work in progress. What memories do you keep of that day? KM : It was impressively crowded. It was a very emotional experience, especially after I cancelled in 2005. I have never

seen so many people, I have never felt a wave of love and euphoria like that. This show really marked me and was one of the most wonderful moments of my life. Having a history of more than 30 years with so many people is incredible. I wouldn’t change anything that day, I just wish I had recorded what I saw so I could relive those moments. You have done a lot in these 40 years of career. What remains to be done? KM: A lot of things! What can we expect from your show in Brazil? You haven’t been here in a long time. KM: It’s been a long time! I’m excited to see you. I LOVE how passionate the Brazilian audience is and I can’t wait to hear them and share this love!

HARPER’s bazaar MARCH 2020 BRazil KYLIE MINOGUE IS BACK WITH A SHOW IN BRAZIL AFTER 12 YEARS. The singer is the headliner of the GRLS festival, which brings reflections on International Women’s Day. by andré aloi

Kylie Minogue’s visits to the country are as rare as astronomical events. The last time the pop star was seen doing a live show in Brazil, was in 2008. Then, in 2012, she came to the Festival do Rio, to promote the films « Holy Motors » and « Jack and Diane », and more recently, she was seen at the amfAR gala (2015). « I always wanted

to go back, I am very excited about this opportunity », she says in an interview with Bazaar, remembering the warm welcome from Brazilians. She is headlining the GRLS festival, which takes place this Saturday and Sunday (07 and 08.03), in São Paulo. Kylie helped align the cosmic dance pop scene, where 76 www.kylie-world.com

Dua Lipa and Selena Gomez orbit artists that Kylie has been listening to a lot. « I like to be up-to-date, but I confess that I am never fully. I don’t leave much of my little world. I listen to music and artists that I meet or that friends recommend », she explains. Last year, there was even a feat. with Tove Lo . « It is like having one Isa, March 2K20

foot in nostalgia and the other in the modern world ». Billie Eilish is not left out of her galaxy. Still in 2019, she released the album « Step Back in Time - The Definitive Collection ». « It was a chance to look back and take stock of my journey so far », she reflects. With the hit list in hand, she thought more about the time that separated each number 1, the day of the recording, the people she worked with, the celebrations and the setbacks. « A young woman’s dream came true! Reflecting on the past inspired me to make the next album ». If the country era arrives for everyone, as they say, Kylie went to discover this phenomenon on the spot. After London, she stepped in Nashville (in the United States), the birthplace of the genre, for this journey. « I had fun », she says. Making « Golden » (2018) yielded an unforgettable experience, which will « colour » your next compositions. But enough of that for now. « My next album will have a different sound and feel ». The excitement subsides when it comes to ageism. The 51-yearold Australian, with more than 40 years of career and experience with TV shows and film, has already addressed everything on the theme in « Golden », as she

sings in the title track: « We’re not young and we’re not old. We are golden ». It is frustrating for her to have to justify her age in the music industry. « I let my work speak for itself », she reacts. The important thing to be aware of is biology, of where you are in life. And the best of it all? To celebrate! In 2020, her fight against cancer turns 15 (she was diagnosed in May 2005). « It is a change, challenging at the same time that it is an affirmation for life. It goes beyond counting dates », she says, about the deep and continuous experience. Life is different after the fright. « I am grateful to be here and to be helping others with my experience ». That being said, her job is to connect emotions to people. Part fantasy, part reality. « I think my fans know how to distinguish Kylie from real life ». In addition to Kylie, this gravitational force called GLRS will have performances from Little Mix, IZA, Gaby Amarantos, Tierra Whack, MC Tha, Mulamba and Linn da Quebrada. There will still be talks of important people such as writers Djamila Ribeiro and Conceiçoa Evaristo, the indigenous leader Alessandra Munduruku and more. © Christian Vermaak

Focus • Coronavirus

Let’s respect the quarantine rules with Kylie In this rather complicated period for a huge number of people and following the announcements made by the various governments of many countries (if not all of them), we decided to try to make you laugh a little during this quarantine. So here are the barrier gestures and the rules to follow, this time dictated by our favorite Australian (it’s always easier to respect them when it’s Kylie giving the rules!).

Cough or sneeze in your elbow or in a handkerchief

If you are sick or have symptoms, wear a mask

Greet people without shaking hands and avoid kissing STUDIO SESSION #KM15

Respect safety distances of at least one meter between two people

Don’t go out except for emergencies or vital needs, and don’t forget your certificate!
