Over the last 165 years this charming community nestled 15 miles north of Atlanta has grown from a tiny trading post to the bustling technology hub you see today. The City of Alpharetta operates under the strong mayoral form of government. The mayor is the CEO, and the legislative and policy making authority is vested in the Mayor and our six-member City Council. All seven of these elected officials are elected on a non-partisan basis; serve four years, at-large terms; and each has a vote on all policies, ordinances, rules, the annual budget and other matters that come before them.

The Mayor and Council appoints a City Administrator who carries out the policies and implements the goals established by the City Council and manages day-to-day operations to provide services effectively and economically.

Alpharetta was incorporated on December 11, 1858. The town was created to become the county seat of the newly formed Milton County. The territory comprising Milton County had once been a part of the Cherokee Nation and beginning in 1831 this area became the southern portion of Cherokee County, one of the largest counties in the state. Cherokee County’s size created a hardship for some of its southern residents who had to travel to Canton, Cherokee County’s seat, to conduct county business, a trip that could take up to four days for the round trip. To accommodate those residents, parts of Cherokee, Cobb, DeKalb, Gwinnett and Forsyth Counties were combined to create Milton County.

On April 12, 1858, the Milton County Inferior Court ordered the purchase of 60 acres from the Manning and Camp families. Twelve and one-half acres were retained for county use and the remaining forty seven and one-half acres were divided into lots and sold to the highest bidders. These lots were used to establish the downtown business district and residences for settlers who were drawn into the new town for commercial or other reasons. Before the year was over construction had started on a new courthouse and jail. The 1860 Federal Census for Alpharetta listed six carpenters, three blacksmiths, two brick masons, two shoemakers, two tailors, two grocers, two hoteliers, two livery stable employees, one ditcher, one doctor, one postmaster, one sheriff, and one constable.

The new government had barely three years to become established before the Civil War began. Milton County sent two representatives to the secession convention in Milledgeville, then the Georgia state capitol. These two men, Jackson Graham and J. C. Street voted against secession but they were in the minority. Soon, five infantry companies were raised locally and soldiers were sent into battle. These troops fought in some of the war’s most deadly engagements including Manassas, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Chickamauga, and Atlanta. Milton County troops suffered 244 casualties.

In March 1865 the Superior Court reported a cash balance of minus $7.50 in the county treasury. Since there were no funds for education, Milton officials emphasized the importance of Sunday Schools in educating children. By 1871, the Male and Female Academy opened in a new building located in front of the current city hall. The school operated until the January 1922 when a new Milton School opened on Canton Street. During the 1890s, primary schools, funded by local citizens, opened in communities throughout the county, Ocee, Warsaw, Hopewell, Crabapple and Summit among them. Junior high schools were built in Birmingham and Newtown.

Alpharetta’s economy was cotton based for decades. Farmers grew cotton and downtown businesses opened to seed, fertilize, process, sell and ship the product. In 1901, the Webb

Alpharetta & Old Milton County History Museum

Local historians worked for over four years to open the Alpharetta & Old Milton County History Museum, which includes stories, photos, and memorabilia contributed by many local residents. The Museum was funded by the City of Alpharetta and developed in partnership with the Alpharetta & Old Milton County Historical Society which provided historical research and many of the artifacts on display.

Guano Warehouse opened for business in the landmark Cotton House building on Milton Avenue. At various times three gins operated in Alpharetta, two in Crabapple, one in Webb and Ocee.

Most, if not all of the existing downtown commercial buildings, particularly those on the west side of South Main Street and on the west side of Old Roswell Street, were built between 1902 and 1914. During this period the cotton business flourished as did the downtown businesses. But in the 1920s and 1930s the cotton market was destroyed by the boll weevil, drought and the Great Depression. The price of cotton fell from 35 cents per pound in 1919 to 6 cents per pound in 1931. The two banks closed, cotton brokers could no longer offer seed and fertilizer to farmers on credit, and the farmers barely survived. By then Milton County was near bankruptcy. Teachers were forced to take pay cuts, and even then were not paid on time. Roads were in deplorable condition. County employees were underpaid. One local resident, the late Louie Jones, described the situation this way, “Schools during the Depression were nothing but shacks in the fields and not an inch of paved roads to get to them.” So in 1931, Milton County residents voted to become a part of Fulton County, its rich neighbor to the south. The vote was 213 for the move and 59 against. The change took place on January 1, 1932. Soon, a cafeteria, central heat and plumbing were installed at Milton School. Alpharetta’s main street was paved, school bus service was instituted, and pay for county employees was doubled.

Farmers shifted to livestock and truck farming in the 1930s and 1940s. The demand for food by U. S. troops during World War II led to the growth of the poultry business in much of North Georgia, including the Alpharetta area. The poultry industry provided local residents with a stable source of income for many years even long after the war ended. Two other developments provided jobs for Alpharettans. The Bell Bomber Plant, now Lockheed, opened in Marietta in1943, and the General Motors Assembly Plant in Doraville began operations in 1947.

The opening of Georgia Highway 400 in the 1970s and the growth of the Windward

Development in the 1980s drew more residents and businesses to the area. Reasonable home prices, a moderate climate and superior schools made Alpharetta and surrounding communities excellent places to live, work and play.

In May of 2018, the City of Alpharetta celebrated the opening of the Alpharetta & Old Milton County History Museum, located inside Alpharetta’s City Hall. The History Museum covers the history of Alpharetta, from its earliest days as Cherokee Indian territory, through its remarkable emergence as one of the nation's most vibrant high tech cities.

Growing the Tech Ecosystem in Alpharetta

Tech Alpharetta is an independent, 501c (6) nonprofit organization whose mission is to help grow technology and innovation in Alpharetta. There are more than 700 tech companies located in the city of Alpharetta today, and Tech Alpharetta, which significantly contributes to Alpharetta’s continued growth and recognition as a thriving tech hub, is the organization that supports and connects this vast tech community.

Tech Alpharetta helps to: recruit and retain tech companies, grow new tech startups and innovation, create jobs, and grow the next generation of skilled tech workforce for the many employers in the Alpharetta and north metro region.

Tech Alpharetta also focuses heavily on giving back to the community through its Women’s Forum, which has grown a very successful STEAM Mentoring Program, that pairs high school girls at Fulton County Schools’ Innovation Academy Magnet High School in Alpharetta with female executives in STEAM careers, to serve as workplace role models and to help inspire and guide the girls to pursue careers in STEAM.

Tech Alpharetta connects the tech community and effectuates its strategy through its board of directors, by operating a thriving startup incubator and its Women’s Forum, and by hosting year-round, locally-based, educational, and tech thought leadership events for technology executives.

Tech Alpharetta’s board, which includes 35 c-level and senior executives from area technology companies, helps to guide the organization’s growth and mission and provides tech infrastructure recommendations to the city of Alpharetta. is Chairman of the Board, Karen Cashion is President & CEO, and Jade Rodgers is Deputy Director of Operations, Innovation Center.

Tech Alpharetta’s incubator, the Innovation Center, has graduated 20 tech startups since first opening in 2015. It has created more than 1100 new jobs for the city of Alpharetta and nearly 2000 new jobs for the state of Georgia. “Tech Alpharetta has been a game-changer for Terzo, providing valuable introductions, connections, and resources that have helped to accelerate our startup’s growth,” states Eric Pritchett, President & COO of Tech Alpharetta member startup Terzo, an AI-powered contract intelligence platform that extracts, analyzes, and visualizes contract data. “We’ve established our Operational HQ here in Alpharetta, where we’re working to next establish larger, commercial office space to accommodate our continued growth”.

Windward Parkway and Highway 9 Study

The City of Alpharetta is working with the City of Milton and True North 400 (formerly the North Fulton Community Improvement District) to conduct a study for the creation of a Strategic Master Plan for the Windward area. Building on the 2012 Strategic Master Plan for the area, this effort will consider the significant changes that have occurred within the last 10 years, both locally and nationally and will identify potential investments in mobility, transportation, green space, and placemaking to improve quality of life and economic competitiveness.

South Main

After a recent planning study, the community’s new vision for the future of South Main Street has come into focus. Plans for the area of State Route 9 south of Downtown focus on artistic placemaking, improving walkability, and increasing connectivity to Wills Park.

Continuum

A 51-acre mixed-use development coming to the corner of Windward and Westside Parkway at the site of the Hewlett Packard Enterprise offices. The development will include residential, retail, restaurant, and office space. Developers plan to begin renovating office space in late 2023 and start construction on retail in 2024.

Brookside

Improved sidewalks, new bike lanes, and trails are coming to the 155-acre Brookside development. Findings from a small area study recommended reducing travel lanes to add bike lanes to enhance and revitalize the area.

Fulton County’s SAT scores continue to exceed the state and national average. Additionally, seven Fulton County high schools rank within the top 15 highest scoring schools in Georgia, with the majority of them located in the Alpharetta and surrounding community. According to the College Board, Fulton has more schools with high SAT performance than any other district in Georgia.

Idina Menzel & Cara Mentzel visited New Prospect Elementary in Alpharetta as a part of their book Tour for Proud Mouse. Proud Mouse is about shining in your own way as a child despite your siblings or other kids around you. New Prospect did just that, they shined for their celebrity guests on Wednesday September 13th. All 600 students, 100 staff member as well as school and district leadership celebrated the new book with the sisters. The students started off by singing their school song Grow Celebrate and Matter song to welcome Idina & Cara. Idina and Cara then read the book to them using both of their amazing voices and humor. WHAT WE DO

Our problem-based learning curriculum allows students the freedom to actively engage in their education. They will work in teams to solve complex problems, like providing safe drinking water to people in disaster zones. These projects allow students to gain deep understanding of learning standards by seeing them applied in a real-world setting.

Requiring students to complete a career pathway in healthcare science, engineering, or information technology allows students to study STEM standards through the lens of some of the most cutting edge career opportunities in our modern world. This connects core content class objectives with practical applications.

Students will complete a self-selected culminating project which ensures students will be able to apply the knowledge they gained in their course work with the less-tangible, but equally important skills such as teamwork, communication, critical thinking and creative problem-solving. Employers at all levels claim these skills are most important for students to develop. Practical application and mastery of all these skills is essential to be a leader in today’s workforce.

The Alpharetta Department of Public Safety is a unique agency that includes three divisions of public safety services under one organization – 911, fire and police. From our beginnings as a police department and a fire department to the combination into a Public Safety Department in 2004, we strive to meet our mission every day — enhancing the quality of life for those that live, work, and play in the City of Alpharetta.

Receiving nationwide recognition for its performance, Alpharetta’s 911 Center is known as one of the top 911 centers. In 2016, it became one of the first in Georgia to implement the “Text to 911” capability and it is the first center in the state to incorporate NG911 technology, ensuring more accurate location information. In 2017, the Center received one of the rarest honors to be given to any 911 center – the prestigious International Academy of Emergency Dispatch (IAED) accreditations for its police, fire, and EMS operations.

The Center continues to maintain this Tri-Accreditation by reapplying every three years and is one of the few emergency dispatch 911 centers worldwide to hold all three accreditations. In 2021, the Center added an additional award when they became accredited through the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies.

Department holds the highest ISO rating score (ISO 1) as determined by the Insurance Services Office (ISO). In fact, Alpharetta Fire Department is one of only 474 agencies out of roughly 48,000 fire departments nationwide to obtain this prestigious accreditation with an almost perfect score!

The ISO is the national “gold standard” used by fire departments across the nation as the governing body that determines what category fire departments should be rated in regard to insurance risks.

Alpharetta’s Police Department is a modern and progressive law enforcement agency focused on strengthening our team to support our community. When it comes to real estate, it would be hard to find more up-scale variety anywhere in the country than right here in Alpharetta. Whether you are a business looking to grow, a person looking for a home, or want a fun night out on the town, you can do it all right here in Georgia’s Connected City.

Alpharetta has developed into a very wellplanned, organized and yes, connected city. City planners have worked hard over the years to create an environment that invites its residents, employees and visitors to get out

and be a part of the city together. They have done this in a number of ways that include building first-class amenities such as trails that meander along creeks and throughout the city. And attracting a smart mix of uses that include some of the most desired office space in the metro area, a wide variety of unique housing options, and a seemingly endless number of shops, restaurants and destination spaces scattered throughout.

Housing

With an estimated population of just under 70,000, Alpharetta has just over 26,000 housing units ranging from estates, swim/ tennis and golf-course communities, to more urban condo and single-family home settings. The median household income is around $117,000 and median home value is $663,664, according to Zillow.

“There are communities that remain priced for first time buyers, communities perfect for families, and neighborhoods built for the needs of seniors,” said Lara Dolan, an Alpharetta based Realtor with Ansley Real Estate, and current president of the Alpharetta Business Association. “Areas near Avalon and the City Center are sought after by empty nesters seeking walkability to restaurants and entertainment.”

Alpharetta once had the reputation as a ‘country-club community,’ but that is no longer the case. With the addition of Avalon and the build-out of its downtown district, being able to walk to those vibrant city-centers has become a priority for homeowners.

“While there are still a lot of country club and swim/tennis options available, luxury townhomes and condos are leading new development with redevelopment of older neighborhoods a close second,” said Dolan.

Retail, Restaurants and Night-Life

Residents and businesses do not ever have to go far to find places to eat, shop, or have a night out. Restaurants and shops are scattered throughout the city, many in traditional shopping centers located near swim and tennis communities, and many in the much-heralded Avalon and Alpharetta city center.

To call Avalon an open-air mall would be doing it a disservice. It is a downtown with a life all of its own. A smart mix of office and residential help support the many high-end shops and

restaurants that draw in people from all over the metro area. It boasts restaurants run by some of the area’s top chefs and some of the best-known high-end retailers in the world.

Alpharetta’s city-center also includes a host of distinct restaurants, and a smattering of unique shops that keep the place humming all day and all night. On Saturdays during late spring, summer and early fall, the city boasts one of the area’s largest farmers’ markets. Run by the Alpharetta Business Association, it attracts thousands of visitors every weekend. With plenty of parking and a huge variety of options, the city center is a major draw.

Over the last several years, a lot of emphasis has also been placed on the redevelopment of some of the city’s aging strip-centers. Just south of the city center, one of the oldest stripcenters was demolished and converted into a more centralized retail center. Now hosting Fairway Social, which allows its patrons the opportunity to eat, drink and play golf on one of its simulators, and City Eats Kitchen, a modern restaurant with a sprawling outdoor bar, this is one example of the redevelopment happening throughout the city.

Office For Everyone

With more than 540 office buildings totaling more than 20.7M square feet, Alpharetta is host to everything from corporate headquarters to small mom and pop businesses. What stared off as the corporate campus mecca of the country has blossomed into a place where employees can walk out the front door to a host of shopping and dining options.

In the 1990’s, Alpharetta became the most connected city in the country, being the first to fully invest in a vast network of fiber-optic infrastructure. That move attracted tech and data centers that moved here from all over the world. A drive through the city shows a who’swho of corporate and regional headquarters from companies like ADP, LexisNexis, UPS, McKesson, Fiserv and more.

Alpharetta boasts its contribution to the tech industry, advertising its 700+ tech companies located throughout the city. More than 25% of the top technology employers in the metro area are located in Alpharetta.

Many of the corporate campuses have transitioned into offices that also offer restaurants, shops and in the case of JacksonHealthcare, spas to its employees. And most of the new office development includes other restaurant and retail uses interwoven throughout their projects.

The two high-rises located in Avalon were so popular that rent-rates were comparable to those of high-rises in downtown Atlanta.

Brooke Street Park

The park features lovely specimen trees, a winding concrete path, open lawn, plus a small reading garden located between City Hall and the Fulton County Library. Park visitors will also enjoy the Alpharetta Arboretum and a variety of community programs and activities at Brooke Street Park.

Cogburn Road Park

Old Rucker Park

Old Rucker Park is a 10.7 acre park and home of Old Rucker Farm, the headquarters of the city’s Community Agriculture Program. The Farm grows vegetables, flowers, and herbs, and includes an outdoor classroom, a community garden, apiary and chicken coop. Old Rucker Farm follows the principles of regenerative

organic farming, and promotes care of the soil and plant management in accordance with natural systems. Removal of invasive species and replacement with native plants throughout the property is a key component to the educational and physical activity on site. The Farm hosts dozens of agriculture and nature based workshops annually, and grows over 4,000 lbs. of food per year, most of which is donated to the local food pantry. Old Rucker Park will be undergoing construction in 2024.

Maxwell Park

Alpharetta Grows Food and Community Together!

The Alpharetta Recreation, Parks & Cultural Services Department is growing a Community Agriculture Program with the help and support of residents. Community Agriculture is farming or gardening in a shared, public space for fun and enjoyment. In the City of Alpharetta, this includes an operating organic farm, free seeds and seedlings, easy access to resources such as tools, educational classes, volunteer opportunities, partnerships, and a community garden.

The mission of Alpharetta’s Community Agriculture Program is to model and inspire the stewardship of natural resources through the use of sustainable practices, while connecting the community through growing food and nature-based education. The Community Agriculture Program focuses on three pillars: Education, Production, and Donation. Education: The Program offers classes, tours, and hands-on learning for all ages through classroom and in-field lessons. From simply walking around to organized family volunteering days, the Old Rucker Farm is a place to learn about growing food and the environment. The Program also partners with the Cambridge High School Agriculture Program and the Alpharetta High School Culinary Program to provide students a hands-on learning experience. Production: Old Rucker Farm grows approximately 4,000 pounds of food each year. About half is distributed to the Cambridge High School's CSA members in weekly boxes of produce during the school year, and the other half is donated to North Fulton Community Charities (NFCC).

Waggy World Paw Park

Webb Bridge Park

Donation: All people deserve access to fresh and healthy food. Old Rucker Farm makes a weekly donation of harvest to the food pantry at North Fulton Community Charities, that exceeds 2,000 pounds annually. As a volunteer-run operation, Old Rucker Farm welcomes over 700 volunteers to the farm each year. Volunteering is an excellent way to gain knowledge about gardening and farming.

For folks ready to grow their own, there are two types of community garden programs available. Whether you have a garden at home or want to have a raised bed plot at Old Rucker Farm...and whether you love to grow delicious vegetables or beautiful cut flowers - come grow with the City’s Community Agriculture Program!

For folks who like to grow, but want to grow for others, the City of Alpharetta's Grow-A-Row Program may be a good fit.

The Grow-A-Row Program is a community food growing effort with coordinated trainings, scheduled plantings, harvest days, and weekly delivery of fresh produce to NFCC, making this collaborative agriculture effort impactful for all participants.

The Grow-A-Row Program was developed in 2021 to support and encourage members of the community to grow and harvest organic produce to donate to the NFCC food pantry.

Wills Park Equestrian Center

Wills Park Equestrian Center was built in the 1960’s and is a unique feature to the city. The center hosts a variety of annual equestrian and dog agility shows, along with several special events each season, many of which offer free admission. Equestrian Center activities draw spectators of all ages, and are held rain or shine. The Equestrian Center includes eight shed barns with covered aisle ways, along with a total of 300 stalls. The covered arena is 150 by 350 feet, housing its own show office, announcer’s booth, viewing room, restrooms, raised bleacher seating and picnic area. Five outdoor arenas, with all-weather equestrian footing, share a show office and announcer's tower, as well as a meeting room for civic clubs and other organizations. A concession stand with restrooms are centrally located, and a bathhouse complete with showers, is located in the stable area. Wills Park Equestrian Center offers ample paved parking areas with camper hook-ups for 30 campers. Horse owners can purchase a daily or annual riding pass at the Equestrian Center and use the facility in accordance with park regulations and riding pass rules. Wills Park Equestrian Center is also available for private corporate rentals throughout the year.

Alpharetta's Health & Wellness Program offers a myriad of opportunities that promote physical and mental well- being. Windward Community Park

Alpharetta Arboretums

The Arboretum at Brooke Street Park

Established in 2016, this arboretum features a variety of springtime flowering trees that will delight visitors with vibrant colors. Flowering trees are a staple in landscapes and are used as ornamental and specimen plantings, and they add color to the landscape. Brooke Street Park is a five-acre passive park located just behind Alpharetta’s City Hall.

The arboretum showcases a fine collection of mature trees as well as seven unique trees, including oaks, yellowwood, ginkgo, pecan, flowering dogwoods and southern magnolias.

The AlphaLoop

The Alpharetta Arboretum at Wills Park

Established in 2008, this arboretum showcases the natural setting and beauty of many native tree species of the Southeastern United States. Located in Wills Park, Alpharetta’s Downtown Park.

Wills Park offers numerous stunning examples of native tree species along a paved walking trail, which winds around and through the park. Many street trees, parking lot trees, border and accent trees have been planted throughout the history of the park including 24 specimens from green ash, elms, and dogwoods, to oak, cherry, persimmon, cottonwood and more. These trees offer an educational perspective on the wide choices of trees suited for planting in our urban landscape. While at Wills Park, visit the Alpharetta Community Garden. The Alpharetta Arboretum at Webb Bridge Park

This park abounds in natural beauty with trees and flora native to Georgia featuring upland hardwood forest, conifer forest typically found in moist ravines and bottomland. Walk the mile and a half trail through the park and experience “A Walk Through Georgia”, spotting 23 trees that represent all three of Georgia’s geographic regions: the mountains, the Piedmont and the coastal plain.

But, the AlphaLoop is more than simply a path. It will, itself, be a destination . . . really, a series of destinations that helps to define and convey to visitors the unique characters of the districts and neighborhoods that make up our community. The idea of the AlphaLoop was introduced in 2016, and it is a long-term project that, like the Big Creek Greenway, will probably take a number of years to complete. Yet, much has already been accomplished. In 2020 the first full segment of AlphaLoop was completed, connecting Downtown Alpharetta and Avalon, and much more is under construction. The AlphaLoop is a dynamic and transformative project for Alpharetta; one that will connect our neighborhoods to activity centers, improve mobility, promote healthier lifestyles, and enhance the quality of life of everyone who lives, works, and spends time in our awesome community. At its core, the AlphaLoop is a multiuse path looping through Alpharetta and tying to amenities like the Big Creek Greenway, Downtown Alpharetta, Avalon, and the North Point District.

The Big Creek Greenway

WHAT IS A GREENWAY?

A greenway is a linear park. A greenway is about people and the land they love. It is about conservation. It is about recreation and alternative transportation. It is about environmental education. It is about connecting the quality of life Alpharetta now has with the future plan that will help maintain that quality of life. Our greenway is an investment in the future of Alpharetta – an Alpharetta that is green, with open spaces for people as well as natural areas for plants and animals.

The Big Creek Greenway is primarily a 12-foot wide concrete path that meanders through the deciduous woods along Big Creek. The greenway offers an ideal setting for walking, jogging, inline roller blading, and biking. Dirt mountain bike trails are located on the east side of the creek 2/5 mile south of Webb Bridge Road.

HOW LONG IS THE BIG CREEK GREENWAY?

Total length of the Big Creek Greenway, from Windward Parkway to Mansell Road, is approximately 8 miles.

WHERE CAN THE GREENWAY BE ACCESSED?

Alpharetta YMCA: From Old Milton Parkway, go 1/4 mile north on North Point Parkway to Preston Ridge Road and turn right toward the Ed Isakson/Alpharetta YMCA.

Haynes Bridge Road: From North Point Parkway, go 1/5 mile south on Haynes Bridge Road. A parking lot is on the east/left side of Haynes Bridge Road.

North Point Mall: Driving northbound on North Point Parkway halfway between Mansell and Haynes Bridge Roads, find the greenway sign directly across from Haverty's Furniture. Parking is located in a wooded area. Restrooms are available at that location. 800 feet south of this entrance is the NorthPoint Village retail center. Walk behind the shops to the stairway that leads to the wetlands mulch trail. Note: The stairs are not A.D.A. accessible.

Kimball Bridge Road: Rock Mill Park, located 1/4 mile southeast of North Point Parkway, has Greenway parking and public restrooms. This area is prone to flood during heavy rains.

Marconi Drive: Follow Marconi Drive off of Windward Parkway to reach a small parking area at the northern end of the Greenway.

IS THE BIG CREEK GREENWAY COMPLETE?

No. Long range plans include connection to the Forsyth County trail system.

WHAT CAN I DO TO HELP?

• Most importantly, "Use but don't abuse". Please stay on the trail and stay off the berm that separates the concrete path from the creek.

• Keep the greenway litter free. Hold your expendables until the first available litter can.

• Respect other users and types of uses. Bikers: Please watch for darting children! Speed limit is enforced on the trail!!

• Be a "steward" of the Big Creek Greenway. Call 678-297-6123 to report any damage such as fallen trees.

• Financially support greenway maintenance. Maintaining the linear park costs more than its construction. 12 Years Advocating for Safer Paths, Roads and Trails

We love celebrations and 2023-24 marks a dozen years for us, Bike Alpharetta Inc., as a 501c3 non-profit community organization. Members are local residents and business leaders who generously volunteer their time and talents throughout the year to advocate and to educate for improved cycling facilities in Alpharetta. The main focus since 2011 has been to create a safer and more enjoyable environment for people of all abilities to utilize bicycles for an improved lifestyle in our community.

BICYCLE FRIENDLY COMMUNITY

In 2023, the City of Alpharetta received national recognition as a bronze-level Bicycle Friendly Community by League of American Bicyclists! This is the second time Alpharetta has been recognized for its investment in infrastructure, facilities and education to better enable and inspire people to ride bicycles, be it for recreation or transportation. The BFC designation, valid from 2023 to 2027, has only been awarded to 11 Georgia communities.

BIG CREEK GREENWAY

The Big Greek Greenway in Alpharetta, a 12-foot wide, multi-use concrete path, was expanded in 2021 to a full 9 miles! It connects to the Roswell section on the south end at Mansell Road and now continues on a new north section to Union Hill Park, with an underpass at Windward Parkway. The Greenway offers an ideal setting for cycling, jogging, in-line roller blading and a leisurely walk. It even provides access to the city’s only mountain bike trails, Mt. Adams, located near Preston Ridge Park. Bike Alpharetta is proud to have produced an updated digital and print map of the Greenway, with support from the City of Alpharetta, Alpharetta Convention & Visitors Bureau and Tracy Morton-Harry Norman Realty. BIKES FOR KIDS

Started in 2007 by one family, Bikes For Kids is now the main community project for Bike Alpharetta. With help from our 115-plus volunteers, local bike shops and partners, Bikes For Kids has provided 4,634 bicycles, tricycles and scooters, as well as 1,868 new youth helmets, all free of charge to North Fulton Community Charities to use at its Toyland program for families in need.

It is a huge task, but so worth the effort. We accept donations of gently-used and new bicycles and tricycles each fall (see the website for details), then all are cleaned/repaired on ONE DAY in December, which we call Domestique Day. In addition to youth bicycles and tricycles, Bike Alpharetta uses monetary donations to purchase bike parts and new helmets, as it is a Georgia law that children 15 years of age or younger must wear a helmet when operating a bicycle.

2 Park Plaza | Alpharetta City Hall

Start your tour at the History Museum, covering the history of Alpharetta, from its earliest days as Cherokee Indian territory, through its remarkable emergence as one of the nation’s most vibrant high-tech cities. A special part of the museum features a stories kiosk where visitors can enjoy interviews with Alpharetta’s most interesting citizens.

JONES HOUSE | 1914

50 S. Main Street

The craftsman style home was built for Will Jones and his wife May Jackson Jones at a cost of $515.00. Mr. Jones owned and operated Jones Grocery which was located across the street on the corner of South Main Street and Milton Avenue. Mr. and Mrs. Jones and their son George were the only family ever to occupy the house, which after the couple’s deaths became a commercial property.

MILTON COUNTY COURTHOUSE | 1895

2 S. Main Street

This was the Courthouse of Milton County at the time it merged with Fulton County (1932). Created in 1857, the county was named for General Homer V. Milton (War of 1812), though some claim it was named for John Milton, first Secretary of State of Georgia. The courthouse was demolished in 1955. The existing building is a replica of the historic courthouse.

FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH OF ALPHARETTA | 1905

44 Academy Street

In 1903, a group of women who met weekly for prayer and Bible study began collecting offerings. From these collections, the women purchased a sixty by one hundred foot lot and began construction of the First Baptist Church. The project was completed in 1905 and was located on this site.

J.J. WEBB AND SONS | 1910

21 N. Main Street

The two-story brick building housed Shirley Brothers store, Milton County Bank, Buren Weatherford Grocery and Bates Grocery. C.P. Brady and Sons purchased it in 1934 and operated a Chevrolet dealership, gasoline station and garage.

ALPHARETTA FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH | 1834

69 N. Main Street

Methodist circuit riders held camp meetings here in the early 1830s and a meeting house existed as early as 1834. In 1871, Isham Teasley donated land where the brick chapel now stands. A white frame church was there until 1931.

BOB AND LIZZIE MANNING HOUSE | C. 1911

10 Cumming Street

Bob and Lizzie Tatum Manning moved into this Prairie-Craftsman combination style house in 1918 and remained there until their deaths in 1967 and 1977 respectively. The home still retains its original hardwood flooring in all six rooms, fireplaces and mantles. The front porch columns were removed, and the porch enclosed in glass in the mid-1980s when the house became a commercial property.

The six-room Queen Anne-style cottage has pine floors and fireplaces with original mantels and tiles. Cotton broker Clifford Pierce Norman, wife Nancy Lee Shell Norman and their three daughters lived there.

LEWIS-MANNING HOUSE | 1895

40 Cumming Street

Colonel Tom Lewis built the five bedroom Queen Anne-style house. Siblings Tom H., James H. and Annie Manning lived there 1905-1953. Alpharetta Mayor Sim Manning and his wife, Sarah Payne Manning, moved there in 1948.

B.F. SHIRLEY HOUSE | C. 1910

112 Cumming Street

This Queen Anne-style style home built by B.F. Shirley in 1910 used a Sears, Roebuck & Co. house pattern. Features include a nine-room interior, veranda, and exterior stairs leading to the second floor. Renovations have been made, but the original building structure has not been altered. The Alpharetta Woman’s Club purchased the house in 1962 and paid the bank loan with funds from community projects.

NEW PROSPECT CAMPGROUND | C. 1835

116 N. Main Street

Several springs and proximity to westward routes made the campground a suitable overnight stop for travelers and a place for settlers to camp until land could be obtained for homes. The site became known as New Prospect. Later, a log building was constructed for a school and church.

MANNING MERCANTILE | C. 1910

20 N. Main Street

James H. and Thomas H. Manning operated the store in a wooden building that burned in 1902. It was replaced by a one-story brick building that later housed the U.S. Post Office, Bates Grocery, Cowart Shoe Shop, Cook Shoe Shop and the Alpharetta Welcome Center. A second story was added in the 1990s.

R.J. WEBB BUILDING | 1907

Corner of Milton Avenue and Highway 9

R.J. Webb built the two-story brick Webb Hotel, later known as the Alpharetta Hotel. Residents included Milton County court attendees and school teachers. Businesses included Norman and Trammell General Merchants, U.S. Post Office, Alpharetta Bank, Gordon’s department store and Talmage Burgess Grocery. The building was razed in 1971.

WEBB GUANO HOUSE | C. 1901

21 Milton Avenue

R.J. and J.J. Webb built the structure on property purchased from James Madison Dodd. The Teasleys bought the property in 1911 and built the Teasley’s Warehouse portion. Later occupants were Q. A. Wills’ cotton warehouse and chenille factory, Lad ’N Dad Slacks, and The Roswell Company. Frances Byers established the Cotton House Furniture store in the 1970s.

ORIGINAL MILTON HIGH SCHOOL | 1922

86 School Drive

Milton School opened on this site in January 1922 to serve students in grades 1 through 11. A 12th grade was not added until 1950. When Milton County merged with Fulton County in 1932, the school received major upgrades including central heat, indoor plumbing, a cafeteria and school bus transportation. In the 1930s, students in the Future Farmers of America also built a log cabin on campus to use as a clubhouse. Before the school was razed in 2017, the log cabin was relocated to a City Park on

Milton Avenue. When GA 400 opened in the 1970s, Alpharetta’s student population quickly outgrew the aging Milton facility. In the 2005-2006 school year, a new, modern Milton High School opened on Birmingham Highway. The original Milton building served as an alternative high school for several years before finally closing in 2017.

FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA LOG CABIN | 1935

200 Milton Avenue

Members of Milton High School’s Future Farmers of America built this rustic cabin of hand-hewn logs. Teacher P. L. Elkins provided seed money and project oversight. Alpharetta merchants and farmers furnished other supplies. The cabin was once a center for social life and was relocated to this site in 2018 when the original Milton HS campus was demolished for a new school.

RESTHAVEN CEMETERY | 1860

90 Milton Avenue

In December 1860, the Milton County Inferior Court gave two acres to the citizens of the county to be used as a graveyard. In May 1903, Milton County conveyed the Alpharetta Cemetery Lot, now four acres, to Members of the Town Council and their successors. The lot was to be used as a general burial ground under the supervision of the Town of Alpharetta. This is the final resting place for many of the founders of Milton County and the Town of Alpharetta. The earliest recorded burial is that of Susan Camp Garrison, born 1822, died 1861. The cemetery property had previously been owned by Susan’s father, Arthur T. Camp.

DODD HOTEL | C. 1870

120 Milton Avenue

Dodd Hotel was owned by James Madison Dodd, 1828-1895. A businessman and Milton County constable, he operated a livery stable and barn on the north side of the street. The two-story hotel boarded cotton traders, drummers, court attendees and teachers. Dodd’s wife, Sara Ann Wynn Dodd, prepared meals. The hotel operated until the 1940s.

OLIVER-WATERS-MCCOLLUM WAREHOUSES | C. 1910

20 Milton Avenue

Originally the three buildings faced the National Highway, now Old Roswell Road. A brick facade was added in the 1970s. In 1909, John A. Oliver constructed the two-story Oliver warehouse. Prior to 1914, D.P. Waters constructed the Waters warehouse that connected the Oliver and McCollum structures. The McCollum warehouse was built around 1909. The only known elevator in Milton County was installed here and still exists.

9 S. Main Street

J.A. Oliver’s general store operated until 1920, followed by the grocery stores of Jones, Lively and Talmage Burgess. In the mid-1950s, Phillips Variety Store opened. In this block were the Teasley, Johnson and Moore stores, John M. Martin Grocery, and establishments owned by the Devore, Mayfield, Waters, Thomas, Shaw, Kirby, Goswick and Reese families.

ALPHARETTA BUSINESS DISTRICT

29 S. Main Street

Buildings south of Jones Alley housed the A.G. Carroll store, Shirley Brothers Mercantile and Milton County Bank (c. 1910), Jones Merchandise (c. 1914), Teasley Ford Motor dealership, Q.A. Wills Merchandise, Louie E. Jones Funeral Home (c. 1940), Barnett Brothers (c. 1950) and Parsons Hardware. The Webb Gin operated behind the complex (early 1900s).

ALPHARETTA BUSINESS DISTRICT

Alpharetta was formed in 1858 and a thriving business district soon developed. Many businesses had two entrances – one facing the Milton County Courthouse on Norcross Street, (now South Main Street) and the other facing National Highway, (now Old Roswell Street). The cotton gin operated behind this building. The cut through was called Gin House Alley. On June 26, 1902, a fire destroyed much of the town. Most of the lost buildings were replaced with brick or stone construction.

WATERS HOUSE | C. 1880

48 Roswell Street

This Colonial Revival structure has served as the home of numerous early city and county officials, physicians, and business owners since the 1890s. Residents include the McLesky, Foster, Oliver, Jones, Robertson, Waters and Garmon families. There have been changes to the exterior including the addition of brick columns and the enclosure of one of the side porches. The Waters family lived here during the first half of the 20th century. Mr. Waters owned the Alpharetta Drug Store and was the book agent for Milton County Schools.

SKELTON-TEASLEY HOUSE | 1856

61 Roswell Street

The Greek Revival-style home was built for the family of Dr. Oliver P. Skelton, physician, postmaster and Ordinary of Milton County. His son-in-law John I. Teasley, a cotton planter, subsequently occupied it. The house sits on one of the highest points in Alpharetta.

MANSELL HOUSE | 1910

1835 Old Milton Parkway

The six-room Queen Anne-style clapboard farmhouse was built by Robert Mansell for his wife, Maude Dorris. The Mansells were primarily cotton farmers. Originally situated on the family farm, the house was donated by the Herman Miller Company to the City of Alpharetta and moved to its current location in 1993. The Mansell House is operated by the Alpharetta & Old Milton Historical Society.

Alpharetta City Band

The Alpharetta City Band, a traditional concert band under the direction of Dr. Nicole Fallin, has become an integral part of the cultural arts community. Sponsored by the City of Alpharetta Recreation and Parks Department, the ensemble of dedicated amateur musicians from Alpharetta and surrounding communities has entertained audiences throughout the north metro area since its first concert in 1989. Alpharetta Community Chorus

The Alpharetta Community Chorus promotes lifelong involvement in music by providing a nonauditioned opportunity for adult singers to perform a variety of choral styles and voicings. Alpharetta Symphony Orchestra

Announcing Ms. Jean, the newest addition to the Play Me Again Pianos in Alpharetta.

The baby grand piano was donated by the family of an Alpharetta resident, Mrs. Jean Williams who lived 1 mile from the Alpharetta Arts Center. She took piano lessons from a young age and started singing in the church choir. She sang and played piano at the Alpharetta Presbyterian Church services and weddings for years. Ms. Jean loved her piano and played it everyday.

This newest piano was brought to life by Sarah Mangalapalli, a long-time resident of Alpharetta. “My design for the piano is based on a traditional quilt pattern known as Lafayette Orange, made modern with eye-catching colors and whimsical doodles,” said Mangalapalli.

“It represents the blend of tradition and freshness that characterizes Alpharetta and complements the architecture of the Alpharetta Arts Center.

The award-winning Downtown Alpharetta Farmers Market is brought to you by the Alpharetta Business Association. From April through November you can stroll, sample, sip, and shop from more than 100 vendors offering a wide variety of fresh food and produce, flowers, plants, health foods, fragrant specialty soaps and lotions, jewelry, candles, and other hand-crafted specialties.

The Farmers Market is the perfect outing for the whole family. There is live music from local musicians and children love to play on the Town Green and in the fountain that is in the center of the Market. The chef demonstrations and the samples are always popular stops. The Alpharetta Farmers Market is dog friendly and you will see breeds of all shapes and sizes. There are even healthy and tasty treats for your pet, so they will look forward to attending the market as well! Dogs must be on a leash and owners are responsible for the behavior of their dogs and for cleaning up after any messes.

How The Farmers Market Started

In 2006, a group of Downtown Alpharetta merchants started the Farmers Market. The early markets were held under the old oak tree in the city parking lot where farmers would display their goods in the back of their pick-up trucks until there wasn’t anything left to sell. Since then, the Market has grown into a Saturday morning destination for people from all over the North Fulton area, surrounding counties, Atlanta and even the North Georgia mountains. The Alpharetta Farmers Market has consistently been voted as a top Market in the area. The Market has received multiple years’ awards including “Best of North Atlanta,” “Best of North Fulton and South Forsyth,” and “Best Neighborhood Farmers Market.” Even as the Market has grown, it remains a great way to experience the Alpharetta community, local shops, restaurants, to meet new people, and see friends and neighbors.

When to Go

The Alpharetta Farmers Market is open on Saturdays from 8:30 am – 12:30 pm from early April through November. The Market makes every effort to be open rain or shine, but it will close on stormy days with wind, rain, and lightning. Where to Go

The Market is conveniently located around the Downtown Alpharetta Town Green area in front of Alpharetta City Hall on North and South Broad Streets. Free parking is available in the City Center and Milton Avenue parking decks as well as at the Alpharetta Baptist Church. Other parking is available around the Alpharetta Farmers Market, but parking areas may change due to ongoing construction projects downtown.

Each month ABA holds their member meetings on the last Thursday that provide social networking opportunities along with informative programming. Meetings rotate to various member locations in the Alpharetta area. The fee is FREE for members and a nominal fee for nonmembers/guests. Each meeting is 5:30 – 7:00 PM.

Brew Moon Festivals

Twice a year ABA presents the Brew Moon Festivals, in June and in October. Brew, wine and delicious food from some of Alpharetta’s best restaurants will be available for sale as the city comes together for one big street party! Tables and individual tickets are available for purchase on our website.

State of the City Address and Mayor’s Breakfast

ALPHARETTA STATE OF THE CITY ADDRESS

The annual State of the City Address and Mayor’s Breakfast is held each year. Organized by the Alpharetta Business Association, the City of Alpharetta Mayor comments and reflects on the past year and addresses plans for the new year in the City of Alpharetta. In addition to table sponsorships, individual tickets are available for this event.

Alpharetta Farmers Market

Named the “Best Saturday Morning Excursion” by Atlanta Magazine, the Alpharetta Farmer’s Market opened for business in 2006. The Market is open to the public and admission is free. Free parking is available throughout downtown Alpharetta. The Market runs through October where you can find farmers with fruits, vegetables and natural meats, gardeners with fresh flowers and herbs, and makers of all sorts of edible home goods from yummy desserts and breads to local raw honey and homemade sauces, jellies, and soaps.
