2021-2022 COBB GUIDE
look forward to serving the community and small
businesses through the West Cobb Business Association as the 2022 president. It is a great time to utilize the networking power of local business associations to grow brand awareness, make those 2021-2022 COBB GUIDE important connections, and establish yourself and your business as a consistent, trustworthy business partner in the community. The mission of the West Cobb Business Association is to assist our members with building business relationships by providing a variety 2021-2022 COBB GUIDE of networking, advertising, educational, leadership, and community outreach opportunities. The WCBA has been a place where our members have found both professional and personal growth opportunities and have even made some of their best friends. My theme for 2022 is: The Power of Yet in Fostering a Growth Mindset. The word 2021-2022 COBB GUIDE YET provides so many possibilities. Say one sentence about your business that may seem challenging to you now. Then say the same sentence adding YET at the end. There is a big difference. Possibilities and opportunities are there. Sometimes they appear in the YET. For example, if you say, “I don’t have enough
employees.” Change it to, “I don’t have enough employees, YET.” The YET gives you hope that the next person to walk in the door will be the next right person. YET also gives you the desire to keep moving forward. It is a word that propels us. I hope the word YET helps us foster and lean into a growth mindset. I would like to invite you to join us at one of our monthly luncheons at West Cobb Church, 1245 Villa Rica Rd. Marietta, GA 30064, from 11:30 am – 1:00 pm. Please check our website for complete details on the monthly luncheon as well the 2021-2022 COBB GUIDE other available networking opportunities. If you live or work or want to do business with people who live or work in Acworth, Dallas, Hiram, Kennesaw, Marietta, and Powder Springs, the West Cobb Business 2021-2022 COBB GUIDE Association would be a great place for you to belong, be active, and be known. Please come see us and introduce yourself to the WCBA Board.

POWDER SPRINGS HISTORY COMES ALIVE At the Seven Springs Museum, in the recently renovated Bodiford House near the city’s Town Square, the history of Powder Springs comes to life for residents and visitors alike. First called Gunpowder Springs by Native Americans -- for the powdery sediment found at seven mineral springs located there -- the site was a rural outpost as early as 1819. With the gold rush of 1828, pioneers came seeking gold and stayed to farm the rich soil. Overnight, the small village grew into a center for commerce and community. estled in the northwestern suburbs of Atlanta, the Smyrna/Vinings area has quickly become one of Cobb County’s most sought-after communities in which to live. The Vinings community is located alongside the Chattahoochee, ten miles northwest of downtown Atlanta. Combined with the much larger city of Smyrna, the two are home to roughly 60,000 residents. Widely considered among greater Atlanta’s most beautiful cities, Smyrna is popularly recognized as the “Jonquil City”, named after the thousands of jonquils that flourish in gardens along its streets in the early spring. In addition to its undisputed natural charm, Smyrna is very much considered a pro-business and service-oriented community. It has been an integral part of Cobb County’s recent growth and development and is recognized as one of Atlanta’s most desirable places to live as a result.
GOVERNMENT Vinings is technically unincorporated, and is therefore under the jurisdiction of Cobb’s County Commission and other public services. As for Smyrna, its residents elect a Mayor and seven Council members, who represent the city’s seven wards. The aforementioned governors are elected to four-year terms and appoint a City Administrator to serve as the City’s Chief Administrative Officer.

Though it’s on the smaller side, Vinings is filled with noteworthy sites and attractions, some of the 2021-2022 COBB GUIDE historic sort. The Pace House offers the remains 2021-2022 COBB GUIDE of what was once a 17-bedroom antebellum mansion, first home to 2021-2022 COBB GUIDE the City’s founder, Hardy Pace, and later rebuilt (between 1865-1874) by 2021-2022 COBB GUIDE his son, Solomon Pace. It is now a three-bedroom COBB GUIDE house and 2021-2022 pavilion that accommodates visitors as well as those looking to host a party/ceremony. Vinings is also home to the historic Silver Comet Trail, and the state of the art Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre, Atlanta’s premier performance venue. Smyrna is an equally outdoor-driven community, with 2021-2022trails, COBB GUIDE pools, lighted a sprawling collection of parks, jogging tennis courts, and public golf courses.

INNOVATION IN COBB
2021-2022 COBB GUIDE
By Trey Smith
F
aced with global crisis, companies in Cobb and across the country were handed a unique opportunity: a chance to tackle a threat head on— innovate to survive, innovate to support their communities—and be the tide that lifts all ships. As the pandemic upended every aspect of normalcy, companies were faced with the painful truth that commerce had changed, potentially for good. How companies interface with consumers, how consumers purchase products and services—all impacted, but with space to capture new growth opportunities in previously untouched commerce spaces. Throughout a hits-keep-on-coming 2020, Cobb-based businesses have taken the innovation plunge, meeting consumers at new moving-target touchpoints, modernizing or completely altering production and communication channels, and in some cases, wholly embracing organizational 180s. Below you will find five companies who bucked outdated trends and took a difficult economic season head on.
InfoMart InfoMart is a background screening company—a business reliant on a healthy economy keeping employers hiring. When the hiring halted, so did InfoMart’s daily volume. Fortunate as they were for a number of accounts providing essential services, InfoMart had a staff of 150 to support. Chief Visionary Officer Tammy Cohen, already pushing to develop products and services to meet the future needs of clients, had been leading her team in creating a pre-pandemic “New World of Work” suite of services built around interviewing and hiring processes going virtual. After the sudden halt in hiring nationwide, Cohen pivoted to a new initiative: COVID-19 screening. The result, SymTem, a daily remote-screening tool for symptoms and temperatures, quickly morphed from a simple app into a robust back-office system that helps employers manage COVID-19 guidance and re-entry. “InfoMart wanted not only to be part of the solution in getting companies back to work; we wanted to lead in pioneering the new world of work,” said Tammy Cohen. “SymTem is a platform that takes a new approach to wellness and health, and the overwhelming response has exceeded our expectations.” During the pandemic, several other companies had gone to market with similar screening solutions—so InfoMart took the idea a step further. “We realized that the greatest challenge facing employers is not just reentry,” said Cohen. “It’s the ongoing management and daily maintenance that is required to sustain a healthy, safe work pool and workplace. The intent is to meet the needs of a range of customers: not just employers screening employees, but restaurants screening guests, schools screening students, and events screening attendees.”

With SymTem already rolling out to a number of early adopters, InfoMart plans to keep the momentum going, scale by the day and stay at the forefront of COVID-19 guidance and re-entry.
BioIQ
2021-2022 COBB GUIDE
BioIQ, a relative newcomer to Cobb County after establishing headquarters in Cumberland in 2019, simplifies health testing and immunization programs for health plans, employers and government organization. The company doesn’t runCOBBits 2021-2022 GUIDE own tests, but has built a network of labs across the U.S.—allowing BioIQ to get any kind of test into anyone’s hands, whether it’s at home, the doctor’s office or any number of retailers. Typically addressing immunization programs and testing for diabetes, cancer and heart disease, BioIQ has streamlined a process allowing them the flexibility 2021-2022 COBB GUIDE to tackle any new healthcare testing need (see: COVID-19). BioIQ’s solution allows its partners to seamlessly provide access to information and testing resources to critical-infrastructure employees and high-risk members—all this through daily symptom and exposure assessments, a testing and contact 2021-2022 COBB GUIDE platform and an actively-adjusting analytics program. tracing Recently, BioIQ became the first Georgia company approved as a qualified vendor for tax credits under the Georgia Entertainment Investment Incentive Act. Film and television production companies working in Georgia can qualify for up to 30 percent in tax credits just for using BioIQ’s solution for COVID-19 2021-2022 COBB GUIDE testing—helping a struggling industry get back to work. As Cobb County and beyond prepare to go back to work, the company recently announced the availability of a home test kit that screens for COVID-19, flu A, flu B, and 21 additional respiratory illnesses from a single saliva sample. BioIQ’s pioneering approach aims to ensure the safe re-entry and returns of essential workforce, employers, campuses and the public at large. 2021-2022 COBB GUIDE
Cobb EMC It may be 2020, but Flower Power is back on the menu. Cobb EMC, Cobb County’s local not-for-profit, member-owned electric cooperative, took a unique approach to innovation and sustainability in 2020. The Solar Flower Garden at Cobb 2021-2022 COBB GUIDE EMC is a 6,000 sq. ft. oasis showcasing Smartflowers—16-foot tall flowershaped solar panels that produce clean energy—and connecting visitors to the environment and sustainability through educational opportunities and events. In terms of output, after one year of operation, the Smartflowers in the Solar Flower Garden will produce 15,000 kWh of clean energy. That’s like avoiding 1,200 gallons of gasoline or charging 3,700 smartphones for a year.

And the Solar Flower Garden project is just a part of a larger initiative to operate the Cobb EMC campus at a near-zero carbon footprint and share solar energy back to the grid. “The Solar Flower Garden utilizes the latest in solar technology and puts it on display for the communities we serve,” said Kevin Greiner, President and CEO of Gas South. “This is a product of a great partnership with Cobb EMC and shows our dedication for a more sustainable future.”

BioSerenity In an average year, BioSerenity specializes in remote diagnostic solutions for neurology, sleep medicine and cardiology. But this year, BioSerenity’s electroencephalogram (EEG) services spearheaded research in a new direction: brain function in COVID-19 patients.
2021-2022 COBB GUIDE
In 2020 and beyond, the company will help physicians fight COVID-19 by diagnosing patients suffering from unexplained neurological disorders, including the sudden comas and delayed awakening seen in severe COVID-19 cases.
2021-2022 COBB GUIDE
“[This] highlights the importance of obtaining EEGs in patients with COVID-19 who present with cognitive impairment to identify possible brain injury, directly or indirectly due to the virus,” said Dr. Bruce Lavin, BioSerenity’s chief medical officer.
2021-2022 COBB GUIDE
Further defying a healthcare system worn thin, the company rolled out virtual epilepsy clinics to offer EEG diagnostic services and provide continuity of care for those living in areas where healthcare services are overburdened due to lack of sufficient medical specialist resources.
Fueled by major projects in grocery, retail, healthcare and e-commerce sectors, KNAPP invested in Cobb in 2020, opening a new facility featuring a 15,000 square foot state-of-the-art automated parts warehouse, as well as expanded 2021-2022 COBB GUIDE parts and customer service capabilities. The $7 million investment is the first step in expanding U.S. operations to meet rapidly growing demand.
Shifting the diagnostic process out of the hospital or epilepsy center and taking it directly to the patient overcomes the growing gaps in neurology services. Virtual clinics have the potential to expand access to high-quality care by remotely connecting those in need with specialists anywhere in the world. BioSerenity has developed these services in rural areas of North America, as well as the Caribbean and Latin America, with future growth opportunities in the works.
KNAPP is also creating a North American Center of Excellence and expanding its global footprint with the addition of expertise and capabilities from mechanical 2021-2022 COBB GUIDE and electrical engineering, to software development, program and project management. The U.S. labor shortage, coupled with the market opportunity driven by emerging technology, such as artificial intelligence, cloud-based technology and internet of things technology (IoT), are all factors in KNAPP’s accelerating investment in U.S. based facilities and workforce. 2021-2022 COBB GUIDE
KNAPP Supply chain innovation leader KNAPP tackle a growing America’s need for automated warehousing, distribution and order fulfillment systems, as well as the resulting need for software solutions to drive those systems.
“We have been very fortunate that the company commitment to R&D has resulted in a number of industry leading supply chain software and automation products,” said Gernot Rupp, KNAPP COO. “This had a direct impact on our relationship with industry sector leaders, adding major contracts with top 5 2021-2022 COBB GUIDE global companies in grocery, retail, healthcare and e-commerce based here in the U.S.”

EDUCATION
On March 27, 2020, the United States Department of Education approved Georgia’s request to waive statewide assessment, accountability and reporting requirements in the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) for the 2019-2020 school year due COBB GUIDE to widespread2021-2022 school closures related to COVID-19. Therefore, there are no 2020 CCRPI reports. SAT and ACT national standardized tests were offered in 2020 and 2021, however, due to widespread school closures, we are only reporting the 2019 scores. The 2020 and 2021 scores do not lend an accurate portrayal of school-wide performance In the school listings you will see two numbers, a College and Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI) and a Climate rating. The CCRPI is a comprehensive school improvement, accountability and communication platform for all educational stakeholders that will promote college and career readiness for all Georgia public school students. The second number is a Climate rating. Schools are rated 2021-2022 COBB GUIDE COBB GUIDE on a 1 to 5 scale on the Georgia School Climate Star ratings with “1”2021-2022 meaning “unsatisfactory” and “5” being “excellent.” The ratings are based on such factors as test scores, student discipline, attendance and student, parent and staff surveys. To learn more about the new testing requirements throughout the State, please visit: www.gadoe.org 2021-2022 COBB GUIDE degree and 15 percent of residents have a graduate or In Cobb, 29 percent of residents (138,291 people) have a bachelor’s professional degree. ENTERTAINMENT
A
s one of 2021-2022 the biggest cities in the metro Atlanta area and the biggest COBB GUIDE of Cobb County, Marietta provides some of the best attractions and entertainment to be found in the area and even in the Southeast U.S. The best place to find entertainment in Marietta is downtown. The Marietta Welcome Center is a great place to stop first if visiting the community. The Center provides abundant information and also offers interesting tours, including the Historic Marietta Self Guided Walking/Driving Tour, the Marietta 2021-2022 COBB GUIDE Pilgrimage Christmas Home Tour, and the Yellow Rose Carriage Service. Other tours in Marietta are the Ghosts of Marietta Tour, which is especially fun around Halloween, and the Historic Marietta Trolley tour. There are also several museums which portray everything you need to know about the City and its history, with the Marietta Fire Museum, the Marietta Gone with the Wind Museum, Scarlett on the Square, the Marietta Museum of History, 2021-2022 COBB GUIDE the Old Zion Baptist Church Heritage Museum and the Root House Museum.

Marietta is also home to the Earl Smith Strand Theatre and the Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art. Probably one of the most unique and entertaining aspects of downtown Marietta is the Theatre in the Square.
2021-2022 COBB GUIDE
For family fun, Cobb is home to Six Flags White Water Park. The park holds 50 attractions, with rides, one of the world’s tallest free-falls, a water park and 2021-2022 COBB GUIDE constant special events. Obviously one of the biggest venues for entertainment in the Southeast, Six Flags provides a great time for any age.

PARKS & HISTORICAL LANDMARKS
C
obb County boasts some of the most pristine parks and scenic landscapes in Georgia. With dozens of parks ranging in size from small neighborhood playgrounds to vast forest areas full of trails and sports fields, there is more than enough space to play, relax or just enjoy the beauty of the county. The parks in the county provide numerous outdoor activities, from 2021-2022 COBB GUIDE ball fields, recreational facilities, basketball and tennis courts, benches and grills to playgrounds, gazebos, gardens and dog-friendly locations. Some of the parks within Cobb reside along the Chattahoochee River, a National Recreation Area in Georgia. The river can be used for its relaxing beaches, kayaking, rafting or fishing. There are also many beaches along lakes as well, such as those found on Lake Acworth that offer volleyball courts and picnic pavilions.

Cobb County is also rich with history, which has been preserved through various 2021-2022 COBB GUIDE museums, community centers, parks, and historic cemeteries. Because much 2021-2022 COBB GUIDE
of Cobb County was first settled around train depots, many museums honor the history of their city’s roots. Kennesaw holds the Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History, while Smyrna contains the Trolley Line Park as well as the COBB Smyrna Museum and Train Depot. You can also find many of the first settlers 2021-2022 GUIDE in the cities within the national cemeteries, such as the Marietta Confederate Cemetery or the Smyrna Memorial Cemetery. For a complete lising of parks in the Cobb County, please see page 57.

LEISURE & RECREATION DOG PARKS Pitner Road Dog Park 2450 Pitner Road Acworth The Pitner Road Dog Park is comprised of two adjoining but separately-fenced play areas for offleash dogs with approximately 2 acres of space for larger and one acre of space for smaller dogs. The dog lots have both open-space and shady, wooded areas with benched seating for dog owners. Each area has dog water fountains and “poop-mit” stations providing bags for owners to pick up after their pets. A gravel access road and parking lot with 50 parking spaces. A combination picnic shelter and restroom building (presently with four picnic tables) sits on a rise and overlooks the playground and dog lots. A multi-function playground for children ages 2 to 12 is between the picnic shelter and the dog lots and can be easily seen from the seating areas of both locations. For information, contact the Western District Zone office at (770) 528-8890.

2021-2022 COBB GUIDE
COBB COUNTY TRAILS Cobb County's 322021-2022 family-friendly tree-lined trails offer the perfect outdoor escape for families, pedestrians and bicyclists. Cobb County has several COBB GUIDE trail networks with proposals for a countywide system to connect major areas of the county. This network of trails accommodates pedestrians and bicyclists while providing transportation alternatives to ease congestion. Although portions of the trail system are recreational, they provide connectivity between cities, access to regional activity centers, and a healthy commuting option for travelers who wish to avoid the congestion of some county thoroughfares. And, more trails are being proposed and added.
