ony Conway and his award-winning company, A Legendary Event, are well-known for making magic. Now he’s used that “Legendary” touch to turn a storied antebellum home in the heart of Buckhead into the region’s premier event facility, 3109 Piedmont Estate and Gardens, known as The Estate. “As we celebrate our 15th anniversary in business, we are extremely excited to present The Estate which is providing Atlanta with a newly restored and updated magnificent special events venue. and lush gardens is a wonderful addition to the prestigious host of venues in Buckhead,” said Tony. Tucked away on three lush acres on Piedmont Road, The Estate is the perfect setting to create events of all types and sizes complete with unsurpassed culinary, floral, and design services. Its charm and architectural integrity lovingly left intact, the original home has been meticulously renovated to offer every modern convenience for intimate dinner parties, fairytale weddings and extravagant galas.
The company’s reputation for quality workmanship, timeless design and, most of all, comfortable furniture made them a natural choice to complete Tony’s vision. Owners Ben Collins and Scott Touchstone provided the perfect mix of “not too conservative and not too contemporary” furnishings, rugs and decorative accessories in a palate of grays, blues and taupe to compliment the home’s “beautiful bones.” From lavishly appointed sitting rooms upstairs for a bride and her wedding party to the bold wine cellars downstairs for a groom and his buddies to toast the occasion, every room flows

comfortable and relaxed while visiting Estate and bringing it all together was a team effort that was pretty much effortless! Bill Lowe of Midtown’s Bill Lowe Gallery curated the stunning art collection placing legendary paintings and sculptures throughout The Estate.
It was important that the renovations not compromise the integrity and history of the home and some unique pieces have been repurposed throughout. The original front doors have been reused for the bar and original Baluster, found in the attic, have been incorporated into the stair railings. Original bricks were reused in a large patio. The old wishing well was
spruced up and is the focal point for an outdoor seating area. The lush gardens surrounding the house are kept perfectly manicured and serve as a perfect backdrop for cocktail parties, dinners, weddings, receptions, corporate launches and gala events. The Estate is a spectacular addition to the Legendary Events enterprise and a welcome addition to the Buckhead community. Tony and his team are excited to offer this magnificent space to celebrate your next Legendary Event.

“When I have an event, my guest list can include anyone from Ludacris & T.I. to Oprah Winfrey and the Obamas, but no matter what the occasion, Tony Conway is who I call and trust to make the evening special. Oprah, who is the master party planner in my book, is where I learned all I know about entertaining. Even she was blown away at his attention to detail during my studio opening. I was also honoring Sydney Poitier and I said I wanted Lily’s of the Field. Wrong time of year? No problem, Tony flew in a million of them. It was the kind of event that is still being talked about today. If I’m entertaining, you better believe A Legendary Event is backstage making it all look amazing and easy.” ~ Tyler Perry 12

In 1997, when Tony Conway, CMP, Founder and CEO, formed A Legendary Event, the legend was born. Conway comments,“Commitment to excellence, attention to detail and personal service is the focus and bringing happiness to people’s tables and their lives is what we live for and resides at the heart of our company.” Tony remembers vividly 15 years ago starting the company. “We went from a two desk office quickly to offices on Armour Circle. Then we expanded to Logan Circle which was 10,000 square feet and then four years ago to our current headquarters of 55,000 square feet on West Marrietta. And to think we were just going to keep it simple! Of course, there was Steve, Jeff, Elizabeth, Sharon, Mysty, Susan, Terri, Lynne, Howard, Carole, Sandra, Sally, John; to name a few that were there lending an ear and the rest is Legendary history.” As legendary as is his company, Tony and his company have helped a vast list of non-profit causes become legendary in their fundraising and nonprofit organization’s success. As a result, Tony was named one of the Top 100 Influential, Small Business Person of the Year by The Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, received the 2012 11 Alive Community Service Award and has served hundreds of non-profit causes. Add the Dale Riggins Humanitarian Award from the International Special Events Society, and this is the short list. And if that’s not enough, A Legendary Event has won over 300 Industry Awards and given the Atlanta Business Chronicle’s Pacesetter Award which was presented to the top 50 fastest growing, private companies in Atlanta. The company’s lobby is lined with trophies and hard-earned recognition, but it’s the accolades from happy, pleased clients that are Legendary’s greatest rewards. “Commitment to excellence, attention to detail and personal service is what our team of talent strives for daily, but it’s only a part of business,” notes Tony. He adds,“It is how you go about giving back to the community making a difference that matters most. That’s what makes our great city and remarkable community Legendary.” For more information, visit www.alegendaryevent.com

Designing events ranging from eight to 8,000 people, Jeanna creates extraordinary floral designs with her unparalleled passion for beauty and excellence. Jeanna transforms bouquets into something special and unique by adding in touches of uncommon flowers, incorporating succulents into a bouquet of white hydrangeas, to create truly memorable arrangements. Current trends give her inspiration to create beautiful, new designs. “I find inspiration in current fashion trends and believe floral arrangements can be just as fashion forward,” says Jeanna, describing what keeps her motivated and creative. She also attributes her incredible team for keeping her inspired to create the next legendary floral design. With a large team of very talented florists, Jeanna knows how to maximize the talent and creativity around her to take on any design challenge.

eanna Graham, Legendary’s Floral Designer, contributes stunning works of floral design to the Legendary Event team. Developing a passion for flowers at a very young age, picking flowers from her Jeanna Graham neighbor’s gardens for pretend weddings with her friends, she has been professionally designing for nearly 20 years. Working for luxury hotels and florists all along the east coast, she gained expertise in many different types of flowers. Jeanna ultimately settled in Atlanta, calling A Legendary Event her home. She prides herself on pulling elements out of the ordinary and making them Legendary, and always includes a touch of the south.

The environment is another asset that Jeanna uses to create and build her arrangements. For a Spanish themed party during the sizzling heat of summer, she found inspiration from the objects around her using lemons, limes, and oranges to create a bright and original theme for the event. These floral designs added an unexpected pop of color and created a design that would withstand the harsh weather conditions of the south.

Legendary Events...weddings, events and moments in between 3/15/13 11:11 AM
To begin, decide on a theme that reflects the party. With that in place, it will be easier to choose a date, location, invitations, cuisine, decor and special elements. Create a timeline and a checklist for the weeks and days leading up to the event and for the event itself. This will help you stay on track with your guest list, decor, food and beverage purchasing and preparation and entertainment. Remember to include some relaxation time for yourself so you can recharge, stay focused and enjoy the festivities. Here are a few ideas to help make your event Legendary: Photography by Ross Oscar Knight
Theme...
The theme sets the tone for the event and can make a statement. By their nature, parties around holidays, 4th of July, Derby Day or Super Bowl come equipped with ideas for decor, food and activities that encourage guest paticipation. If you’re celebrating a birthday or special anniversary it’s fun to recreate a memorable moment in the guests of honor’s life. Photographic collages, tables, home movies and humorous or poignant stories and even a surprise guest from the past can make the night unforgettable for everyone. For an anniversary, have framed wedding and honeymoon photos on tables and play music from their courtship days and their first dance as a married couple.
Location...
location, location! Where you hold your party is critical. Your theme and the number of guests will play a key role in your choice. If using a venue, consider the services offered including parking, kitchen space, catering rules, onsite staff, dressing rooms, outdoor space and if you can use your own decorations, food, liquor and entertainment. If you are able to decorate, hanging curtains, draping fabric and bringing in lighting can dramatically change a space to create the desired atmosphere.

ttention to details and careful planning can make your next party, dinner or reception an unforgettable celebration that leaves your happy guests wondering... “how does she or he do it?”

Invitations...
Now that you’ve decided the who, what, where and when you need to get the word out. The invitation is your party’s calling card and needs to pique your guest’s interest. It needs to let them know the who, what, when and why but you also want to convey a theme. A formal event, such as a traditional wedding, generally calls for embossed or engraved invitations addressed in calligraphy. But invitations can also be a creative key in setting the tone of the party. You can send an ornament for a holiday party that your guest can use before the event and for years to come. Print an invitation on a CD filled with music for a party celebrating a certain era, a garden party invite could be delivered with fresh flowers or a pack of seeds for planting and a Mardi Gras bash invite could come with a mask or beads.
Cuisine...
Let’s face it - any good celebration includes great food.Your theme and budget will play a large part in determining your menu but creativity can go a long way in upping the “yum” quotient. The key is to have food people can eat while enjoying themselves and each other. Encourage guest participation with popular “build-your-own” stations for sliders, tacos and desserts. Keep it simple though. No one looks good trying to juggle a glass of wine and a small plate full of messy appetizers. Do consider your guests’ food preferences, in case of vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, kosher and food allergies.
Your centerpiece gives a table personality and there are endless ways to make them beautiful, functional, easy and affordable. Keep in mind that a centerpiece should never be so large or tall as to impede one guests’ ability to see the other diners or food on the table. A bouquet of fresh flowers can be divided and placed into several small vases. Look outside for seasonal ways to decorate. Pinecones and branches give a rustic feel to a fall or winter gathering just as seashells and clear vases filled with citrus fruits bring the feeling of summer inside.
Lighting... sometimes overlooked, lighting is one of the key elements in transforming the mood of a space. Stringing lanterns or chandeliers from trees and lighting torches add a festive and magical quality to an outdoor soiree. Everyone looks good by candlelight which is probably why it’s a been a staple for romantic and special celebrations for decades. Dimmers are an outstanding and easy way to create a mood but sliding a switch. Your creativity and fun will be noticed and appreciated and guests will be eagerly anticipating your next Legendary event!
Decor... Décor and a color scheme are used to enhance the party’s theme and can create a real “wow factor”. A seated dinner party can be elegant with fine china, sterling silver and crystal on crisp linen napkins on an antique tablecloth or more casual and rustic with mismatched china, mid-century glassware and funky placemats.

apturing the details of the most important, memorable milestones of a person’s life is what Jackie Garson Howard, the mastermind of Paces Papers, has done since 1974. Her love of paper, design and etiquette is what led her to open this store as a gift to Atlanta over 38 years ago. Stationery and invitations are personal statements of style that set the tone of any event. Jackie values creativity in all forms and has surrounded herself with a team of talented designers who are experts in custom design that offer a fresh perspective on the fine details of event planning and wedding consultation. This team of six talented women boasts some of the best graphic designers and illustrators in the stationery and invitation world. Paces Papers has one of the largest selections of handmade papers from around the world. They carry exclusive designer invitation and stationery albums almost not seen anywhere else in the Southeast. They pride themselves in working with only the finest highly skilled craftspeople, artists and calligraphers in this country and Europe. They strive to bring the most distinctive, stylish and cutting edge selections to their clients and are especially passionate about the texture and aesthetic of handmade papers, sourcing from as far away as France, Spain, Italy and the Czech Republic. Each designer has her undivided attention to a project, determining what is the most optimal way to achieve the desired look. Sometimes it’s through a custom design; other times it’s utilizing one of the 30 lines that Paces Paper carries, including Crane, Arzberger, Smock, Dempsey & Carroll, Julie Holcomb, Oblation and Vera Wang. They draw on many sources of imported papers, tissues, ribbons and printing methods; offering letterpress, engraving, thermography, lithography and blind embossing. In their design studio and boutique, they pride themselves in introducing clients to a variety of concepts, styles and choices from designing to printing. Letterpress or engraved, funky or sophisticated, monochromatic or boldly colored, elaborate or simple, each creation is a personalized work of art that makes an unforgettable statement and expression. For over 38 years, Paces Papers can proudly state that they have built strong relationships with their client base; many of whom they have worked with for over two generations through engagements, weddings and births.

Photography by Ross Oscar Knight
oing green and being environmentally responsible is no longer a trend. It’s a way of life for many and it continues to grow as awareness of its benefits spread. Proponents know the way to accelerate acceptance is to make it easy for people to change their habits. Entertaining and party planning are areas where new ways to be eco-friendly are introduced on a regular basis and there are many ways to consider the impact on the planet when deciding details of your next party or event.
New York Times writer and “Green Wedding” author Mireya Navarro says, “People always ask me for a checklist for how to ‘green’ their wedding or event. But going green involves a mindset rather than a to-do list, it’s asking yourself questions such as: What is a greener alternative to this invitation? To this menu? To this venue? How can I avoid waste, excess, long-distance travel by car or plane? Once you start thinking along those lines you will find plenty of ways to be greener.” According to Dave Lishness, President of A Legendary Event, “A Legendary Event is dedicated to composting and being a socially and environmentally conscientous company. We take great pride in making a difference year round.”
Photography by Ross Oscar Knight
Laura Turner Seydel, an international environmental advocate and eco-living expert, says,“Use plants as centerpieces that your guests can take home and plant in their yard.” Her website, www.lauraseydel.com, has a list of environmentally friendly resources covering food, beauty, home, fashion and more.
With that mindset, here’s sage advice to consider when planning your next event. From the smallest dinner party to a large wedding celebration there are easy and practical ways to reduce your party’s carbon footprint. www.ALegendaryEvent.com

Choose local. Using local resources can positively impact your event in many ways. Entertain at home or use a local venue. This will cut down on the driving done by you. For your menu, choose locally sourced products whenever possible. The metro Atlanta area has dozens of farms and dairies that supply neighborhood stores and farmers markets. No matter what the time of year, there are beautiful choices of seasonal fruits and vegetables. For a list of farms and suppliers, check out Atlanta.locallygrown.net. Another way to support local business is by serving beer brewed in one of Atlanta’s many breweries, wines from Georgia’s outstanding wineries or rum and other spirits distilled just a short distance away.
Choose natural. Use natural materials for your event linens, such as certified organic cotton. They have a luxuriously soft feel and help create a warm atmosphere in your event space. Use natural light when possible. Have your event a little earlier to catch the warm glow of sunset. Photographs will benefit from that “magic hour” lighting. When the sun goes down, light soy or beeswax candles. Choose organic. Organic farms use less energy, no pesticides and do not disrupt the delicate balance of the ecosystem. By choosing organic foods, you will get items that are in-season producing fruits and vegetables that are crisp, sweet, and full of flavor. By serving organic, your guests will be happy. If you are having your event catered, discuss your desire to use local providers and see what kind of organic resources the team uses. Choose bamboo. The use of bamboo is growing in almost every consumer segment from watches and clothes to bedding and furniture. Cookware, utensils and plate choices are abundant, sturdy but soft to the touch and can add a modern flare to your event. Best of all, they’re biodegradable. Choose Sustainable. Choosing flowers and plants that are sustainable can be a great way to add a unique touch to the decor and a lasting reminder of the event. Plants that need little moisture, such as succulents, cacti, and ground covering plants, are a good choice to use during warm summer months. Potted annuals are another good way to dress up a party.
Choose Ocean-friendly. Choosing “ocean friendly”
32

fish and fisheries will greatly help the planet. Exploitive fishing practices destroy habitats and are harmful to oceans. Become educated on which species are fished using proper and eco-friendly ways. Seafood Watch® offers a great pocket guide for choosing fish that are in season, which fish to avoid, and good alternatives when your favorite is not available.

achel and Avi met as students at the University of Maryland. During busy season as a CPA in New York, Avi told Rachel that he got the weekend off for a date weekend but that it was a surprise. He said Rachel may or may not need a bathing suit, flip flops, and her ID and she probably shouldn’t pack any liquids. They took a cab to JFK, where they flew to Jacksonville, Florida.
“A wave o
f emotion”
The next morning they drove to Marineland, where they did three activities with dolphins (Rachel is OBSESSED with dolphins!). The first one was a touch and feed. While she was distracted, Avi gave the trainer the ring. Next, the dolphins painted pictures. Finally, Avi & Rachel did a dolphin encounter where they were playing in the water. The trainers took her to find a toy for the dolphins to play with. After going through every single toy they had, Rachel finally picked a frisbee and returned to the water. As she was sitting there waiting to throw the frisbee, one of the dolphins swam towards her with a basketball in its fins. She thought it was strange that the Maryland (her alma mater) logo was on the ball and then she noticed the Atlanta Braves logo as well. Looking a little closer, imprinted on the ball was...“Will you ‘mArry’me (with the Atlanta Braves’ A)?” Rachel turned around and Avi was trying to kneel, but it was kind of difficult in the water!

ri & Rachel met initially at a party, and were joined together again at the Peachtree Road Race. On a walk to what Rachel thought was going to be a restaurant for dinner, Ari steered her into a local Atlanta ice cream shop under the guise that they had her favorite flavor (salted caramel) in stock. When the shop’s employee learned that was Rachel’s favorite flavor, she told her that she had to try a new flavor they were planning to debut for the Inman Park Festival. She said it was salted caramel ice cream with, chocolate-covered pretzels, cookie dough and peanut butter (amazingly all of Rachel’s favorite toppings) mixed in. She tasted it and was in heaven! The employee said that they weren’t going to reveal the flavor and its name until the next day when the festival started, but since she liked it so much she would do it at that moment.
“Ari melte

She then pulled down a sheet that was covering the blackboard behind the coolers and revealed: “New Flavor - Rachel Will You Marry Me?” She turned around to see Ari on one knee and he proposed!

Tony’s Legendary
h! The relaxing and soothing feel of a tea party. Showcasing four legendary ladies in Atlanta,Tony Conway’s T Party on Monday December 17, 2012 produced an atmosphere and experience that was totally Legendary. With a long list of Atlanta’s best known Divas and community leaders and volunteers in attendance,Tony Conway’s “T Party” celebrated four outstanding women including Rebecca Smith, Sharon Umphenour, Elizabeth Allen, and Suze Surdyk Jones. Originally created by Great Britain’s Anna, the Duchess of Bedford, the idea of afternoon tea (later dubbed the Tea Party) was a time honored tradition. What better way for Tony to celebrate these four deserving and astounding woman, than with a Tea Party celebrated in their names. The T Party’s ambiance was nothing short of beautiful and exquisitely detailed. The Estate was filled with the smooth melody of a jazz quartet in the ballroom, and the entertainment of a solo pianist on the second floor. Estate hailed an area of elegance and harmony with design, art, and furnishings that left the guests awestruck. The T Party was appropriately accented with stunning floral arrangements of red and white amaryllis blooms in mirrored and silver mercury glass containers partnered with hundreds of votive candles. In the Estate ballroom, the tea was arranged on an 18 foot diameter round table centered under the grand chandelier. The tea cup unique patterns on each vintage English tea cup, saucers, plates and cake stands presented a harmonious sort of “collage” to be the pinnacle of the party’s décor.

Four Legendary Ladies with Tony: (L to R) Rebecca Smith, Sharon Umphenour, Elizabeth Allen, Tony Conway, and Suze Surdyk Jones
Because Tea Parties were traditionally celebrated between meals, in the afternoon, light snacks would be served alongside the guest’s tea. This custom was highlighted with the T Party’s menu which included finger sandwiches, freshly baked scones, petit fours and other mouth-watering desserts created by the Legendary catering team at A Legendary Event. The elegant décor, traditional atmosphere, and Estate location of the T Party left its guests delighted and truly enjoying themselves all afternoon. It was a well deserved event for the four fantastic women who suit our great city to a tee! Or should we say tea!

Although every event is special, Liz particularly enjoys those that require travel and says the added logistics and challenges keep the job fresh and exciting for her. She also enjoys the teamwork involved and says,“In the end, food is just a tasty piece of the puzzle. It’s the overall experience that makes our clients happy. I believe in working with people from all the departments, because it’s that harmony between all of us that makes our events successful.”

about the company
Presenting Atlanta
Photography by Ross DeLoach
Photography by Denis Reggie
1972 was an eventful year in Atlanta, Georgia. That’s the year Cindy Fowler founded Presenting Atlanta, the region’s premier destination management company. Atlanta’s growth has been nothing less than explosive since then, but not much has happened without Presenting Atlanta helping make it happen. When the Carter Presidential Center opened, Presenting Atlanta (PA) oversaw everything with perfect diplomacy. PA made sure the ribbon-cutting ceremony for MARTA, Atlanta’s rapid transit system, was on track and on time. Cindy Fowler was part of the 8-member Bid Committee that won the 1996 Summer Olympics for Atlanta. Presenting Atlanta performed like champions planning lots of the special events involving entertaining Olympic sponsors. What’s the secret to their success? It’s hard work, resourcefulness, creativity, bulldogging the details over and over and having the best contacts anywhere.
