Terrafirma Ceramics Modern Creativity Emerging From Ancient History Artist Ellen Evans studied classical archeology with a specialty in Minoan Mycenaean and early Greek art. During her studies, Evans grew increasingly fascinated by the fact that ceramic vessels encompass most of what remains of these ancient cultures. She was so intrigued by studying ceramics that, after finding herself unable to master early Greek, she eagerly began crafting her own unique ceramic pieces. Refining her technique by teaching others the pottery skills of wheel work and hand building, Evans decided to transform her passion into a business, and in 1980 Terrafirma Ceramics was born, with Evans as owner and artistic director. At its inception, the Terrafirma line was extremely sculptural, with the focus of the design primarily related to the pieces’ exteriors—drawing inspiration both from the natural world and the fusion of Evans’ classical studies with American art pottery forms. In the 3+ decades since, Terrafirma has moved beyond its classic beginnings. Driven to expand and explore, Evans developed a unique technique by painting through fabric to celebrate decoration on the surface of pieces. “The current collection is inspired by a more painterly approach playing on trompe l’oeil design. Customers are attracted to the textured effect of textile patterns rendered in clay, and mixing & matching these patterns has become the language of Terrafirma.”

Capturing Elemental Energy Evans, a native New Yorker, is a huge NY NOW supporter. Terrafirma was one of the original NY NOW participants, beginning with Evans as a featured emerging artist in Accent on Design. Having participated in every market since, Terrafirma has grown and expanded along with the market over time, and is now found in the Tabletop section happily surrounded by peers of the industry. “Terrafirma does participate in several other markets but there is simply no other show that has that special New York energy that hums through the aisle. It is the only market that really showcases smaller designers and manufacturers, creating a more even playing ground.” With every season, a new element is introduced into the Terrafirma collection. One season it may be a vibrant new color; the next, a fresh pattern. For summer 2018, Terrafirma is once again redefining its boundaries by introducing a line of vases to inaugurate Terrafirma Home, reaching beyond their signature serving pieces and tableware designated for the dining room to debut décor designed for the whole home.

In 1995, Peter Kahane started AMEICO with a vision of importing modern design and supplying museum stores with the best in design and creativity from designers the world over. Jeannette Purdy joined as general manager in 2008, and the company continues to curate products that define exciting contemporary design—products that “not only tell a story, but are stories themselves.” Stories like AMEICO bestseller Izipizi (pronounced “easy-peasy”), a modern eyeglass brand for men, women, and children of every age, with inclusive marketing and bigtime curb appeal. “I’m never surprised,” admits Purdy, “but we get phone calls from shop owners who are caught unaware that they have already sold out of their Izipizis and the weekend is coming!” AMEICO added brick-and-mortar to their repertoire in 2012, opening a store in New Milford, Connecticut as a tangible way to continue connecting their customers to great design—on sale, and also on exhibit; the store has hosted exhibitions on a vast variety of design-centric topics.

Timeless Craftmanship with a Human Element AMEICO champions products that are durable yet innovative; items that have stood the test of time due primarily to smart design. Examples include a classic quartz watch from Junghans, or a traditional watering can by Haws, as well as a line of historical reproductions, like sleek steel scissors by renowned Italian designer Antonia Campi, designed in the 1950s and re-released in the past decade. As Purdy puts it: “AMEICO sees itself as a well-run company who has great product, designed by great designers, and associated with great human stories. We stand behind our brands and the craftsmanship these brands put into their product. These days we are inspired to find products and brands which have survived the tumultuous 20th century into this really disruptive 2st century and are still relevant from a design point of view.”

“Person-Centric And Aesthetic-Driven” For the summer 2018 market, AMEICO will showcase several new products firmly anchored in tradition. “We’ve been keenly interested in contemporary Japanese design, which is rooted in traditional craft, and by origin is natural and minimalist. It’s right for our age and our sensibilities, just as Japanese art was the inspiration for the Impressionists and helped usher in the Danish Modernists. Our newest Japanese brand is Oigen, famous for its fine cast iron since 1852. We’re also introducing Midgard, a Bauhaus-era lighting producer from Germany which has found new life with a completely devoted maker-owner.” AMEICO has been exhibiting at NY NOW since the 90s, and considers the market an ideal venue and showcase—not only for their own story, but as a highly accessible way to honor designs and designers. “We deeply value the show’s continued ability to draw a wide range of buyers and to keep our customers coming to the show so that we can develop lasting relationships with them. Grappleworks Entrepreneurs on a Mission Simon Fallows and Jeff MacIntyre are not only entrepreneurs at heart, they’re entrepreneurs with heart. When they started Grappleworks in October 2016, they were armed with complementary backgrounds in cause marketing and world-class engineered products, and inspired by a passion for well-designed products that are minimalist in form without compromising function. But the pair wanted to go beyond merely introducing another new product into a world full of new products; they decided to reimagine entrepreneurship to invest their considerable talent and energy into a worthy cause. After six months of mulling over their motives and examining their inspirations, Fallows and MacIntyre developed a mission to inspire their generation towards generosity, appealing to a socially conscious consumer by attaching good design to good causes. “We chose Screw Cancer as our first Brand introduction due to the personal stories of how cancer has impacted our lives at Grappleworks. We chose our charity partners based on criteria to provide support services to cancer patients and their families.”

Practical, Inspirational, Personal Grappleworks is a first-time exhibitor at the Summer 2018 Market. “We have received numerous endorsements and excellent feedback on NY NOW and can’t wait for opening day,” Fallows says. They’ll be introducing several new products at the Market, including a leather and chrome Anchor Clasp Bracelet launched for Father’s Day in May, and a new water bottle exclusive to NY NOW. “The design inspiration was fueled by our minimalist approach, making a flat stylish water bottle that easily slips into a purse, laptop or lunch bag. We recognized hydration products are still an on-trend item and for anyone in cancer treatment, hydration is critically important.” The company also anticipates announcing a new primary North American Cancer Cause Charity at or just before NY NOW. “We find it quite humorous that our number one selling product is our SCREW CANCER t-shirt. Yes, it’s a soft style quality tee with our simple but powerful trademarked message, however, it didn’t require the development time and consideration our other products did to bring to market,” Fallows says. “[The tees] are best sellers because when people are confronted with our brand in a retail store the first people to adopt the brand are those in cancer crisis mode. We are inspired by the people and process of consumers purchasing t-shirts for their entire family and friends to show support.”

Purposeful Products Through their Bespoke Design Program, Grappleworks elevates essential everyday objects, like their award-winning screwdriver, by adding elements of excellent design. “In the industry, ‘bespoke’ commonly refers the custom tailoring of clothing. We believe we are custom tailoring our products to appeal to the consumer, and, although not well advertised at the moment, all our products can be personalized for corporations, charities and in some cases engraved with 1:1 personal messages.” Ever innovative, the company has evolved along with charitable trends. “Statistically there’s been a big swing from people who used to write a check or volunteer. Now purchasing a product or making a small crowd funding contribution for good has become the first consumer choice to contribute.” Part of the Grappleworks mission is to deliver a uniquely memorable gift-giving experience by designing products that inspire conversation while promoting positive change. And Grappleworks gives back itself, by donating a percentage of every sale to charitable foundations connected to the various causes their brands represent, as well as offering free products and publicity to selected non-profit charities.

Rustico Leave Your Mark: Durable And Beautiful Goods In 1998, Isaac Childs, a college student with a proclivity for both traveling and journaling, sought to document his adventures across the country and abroad in a handcrafted journal sturdy enough to trust that durability wouldn’t be an issue no matter where he traveled—a way to preserve his memories forever. Rustico was born in the loft of Childs’ apartment, beginning with a batch of journals designed and made by Childs and two friends. Crafted from quality ingredients like top-grain leather, and imported, 100% cotton rag mill paper, hand-sewn for ultimate sturdiness, the gorgeous journals were a hit among their friends and family. Quickly realizing their potential for high demand, the Rustico team built a website, gathered a few key accounts, and made the leap into online sales. “From there we branched out into a full range of high quality, handcrafted leather goods and journals with the intent to inspire others to leave their mark in the pages of our notebooks and journals. The rest as they say is history. 17 years in and we are still going strong,” Childs says. “We’ve grown to where we now make wallets, totes, satchels, bracelets and other leather goods. We feel blessed to have such a loyal fan base and customers that understand what we are trying to do and support us because of it.”

Handcrafted Relationships Rustico has been a NY NOW participant since 2003, and Childs sees intrinsic value in the relationships he’s developed there. “I can always count on NY Now to bring in a great buyer base, fresh new makers, and designers that keep pushing us to new heights on products and design.” Along with perpetual bestsellers—the original Travelers’ Journal, an heirloom-quality notebook with a midcentury look; the High-line Zippered Leather Pouch, known for its versatility and portability; classic gifts like passport covers and money-clip wallets—Rustico will showcase a number of new products at the summer 2018 market. There are several journaling items, like the Journeyman Folio and the Courier Leather Journal, along with products that exemplify branching out into new directions. The Connoisseur Log Book is designed to hold a written record tasting notes, for lovers of coffee, chocolate, hot sauce or any other tasting-worthy craze. The Wine Tote is a perfect way to get a bottle of wine from store to table. And the Journeyman Waxed Canvas Apron is heavy-duty yet easy on the eyes, in premium waxed canvas with leather accents that will wear well in any situation.

Authentic Products For Authentic Adventurers Much like its exquisite products, Rustico as a company continues improving over time, motivating others to live in the moment—and to remember that moment. ARTISAN RESOURCE SPOTLIGHT: RARITY HANDBAGS UNCOMMON MATERIALS--ONE COMMON MISSION Featuring an array of standout handbags sculpted from distinctive materials in innovative styles, Rarity Handbags is a company that lives up to its name. Fusing sustainability and mindfulness with wearable works of art, Rarity transforms a practical item into a statement.After founder Jacqueline Burge designed and made her first sample range in the spare room of a rented apartment, Rarity opened its design studio in the trend-setting Woodstock district of Cape Town, South Africa with the goal of growing the prominence of the South African design sector globally while increasing the social and economic opportunities for marginalized producers and suppliers in the country. From its origin onward, Rarity has celebrated African design, and the remarkable craftspeople who make the bags. As Burge puts it: “Art and design is a incredible way to transform lives and celebrate cultures. The visual and tactile aspects of our collections illustrate how everyday articles, such as purses, can transform us to a different world. The story of our country is relayed through the materials we select, unique and undoubtedly African, and we will often combine different materials in a single product, as our way of illustrating beauty in diversity.” EVER INVENTIVE After a very successful first market last year, Burge is looking forward to the summer 2018 market. “The American market is adventurous while maintaining a good eye for quality. I like that so many buyers are aware of Fair Trade principles. American consumers are very special, because they need to hear our stories, and this is important as it validates and acknowledges the artisans who skillfully create Rarity products.” This year, Burge plans to debut a show-stopping feather tote at the summer market. “After winning Best New Product at Artisan Resource last year, we have had to pull out all our creative energy for this design. We are keeping with the concept of transparency in diversity, and will do so by layering feather colours to represent the illusion of transparency (because often that’s all it is anyway!) But by placing a hard material over the soft, gentle feathers, we are commenting how a few in power, control the many below them.” SOLUTIONS BY DESIGN Burge notes that Rarity’s bestsellers are typically the ones that were intentionally made to solve an issue—for example, a product that was conceived as a solution to an overabundance of wasted fabric. “Then there is pushing design boundaries, like when we started combining different natural materials—materials that really should not go together!--or deciding to make a whole collection from feathers! In fact, when we started, there was no one in the world with a springbok hide collection, the only examples were the postman bag, as a traditional item.” The inimitable voice of the artisans and indigenous materials that go into every bag in the Rarity line is part of its wide appeal. “You have to live in a country as diverse, challenged, beautiful and complex as South Africa, to know that our design strengths come from having a lot to say!” Burge says. “I’m inspired by the desire to share our designs with the world, because I love the way we interpret design, but also because the hands that make our products belong to the most amazing artisans.”
