Judy McNeill Principal

Dan and Judy McNeill Dear Raider Fans, The start of school always brings with it the anticipation of fall and, of course, Raider football. This year the excitement of the season almost palpable. Not only do we have the Dome game to look forward to on August 20, at 2:30 p.m., but we will also be featured as the Q100 game of the week against Roswell on October 14. With Coach Mo Dixon beginning his third year, the excitement from the team and the coaches is contagious. As they do every summer, the players, along with the coaches, have been working hard to prepare for the upcoming season. The coaches have taken time out of their summer to work with the team in the weight room and at camps. It is this dedication to the program that makes the Dome the place to be for our opening game, and Raider Valley the place to be on Friday nights in the fall. These coaches give countless hours of their personal time to help the team wherever they see a need. Friday night football at Walton is a community event that we can all enjoy and support. Alumni and parents of alumni can be seen in the stands at all of the home games and many of the away games. It’s a great way to spend the evening cheering on the team, the coaches, and all of the students who support the team, from Sports Medicine to the cheerleaders, to the administrators and teachers who work the games to make the night run smoothly. It is this kind of support from everyone that makes us great. The Raider Band and Color Guard have been working throughout the summer to produce, what I know will be, another spectacular show with band leaders Mike Back and John Palmer and countless others, to bring you the best they have to offer. The cheerleaders, under Coach Roberta Manheim, have been practicing for the games, as well as their own competitions, painting run throughs and spirit signs and preparing to create excitement for the fans and community for the 2016 season. I look forward to seeing everyone in the Dome and in Raider Valley on Friday nights under the lights, and at all the away games to cheer on the Raiders! Congratulations and best of luck to Coach Mo Dixon and his staff, and the 2016 Football team.

A large part of our success can be attributed to the tremendous support from students, parents, the community, and all of our sponsors and advertisers. Without your physical and financial contributions, Walton football and the rest of our teams would not be able to keep up with the many other programs that want to beat us. Please know that we truly appreciate everything you do to ensure the success of our student-athletes and teams and we encourage you to continue to provide the support you have in the past.

football

While football draws significant attention in our community and beyond, Walton athletics is about more than just what happens on Friday nights in Raider Valley. Walton fields 23 other varsity teams that consistently compete for region and state championships as well. In fact, in 41 years of high school competition, Walton teams have won 67 state championships, 233 region championships, 24 Region All-sports Trophies, and 7 State Directors Cups. During the 2015-16 school year, 19 of our varsity teams reached the state playoffs (including football), 16 of those advanced past the first round, and 11 finished in the top ten in the state. Four teams won state championships: volleyball, baseball, girls lacrosse, and girls tennis. The precision air-rifle team was 3rd in the state, girls swim & dive was 4th, girls track & field was 7th, boys cross country and girls golf both finished 8th, and girls soccer and boys tennis were state quarterfinalists. In addition, six different athletes won individual or relay state championships, three athletes were named the state player of the year in their sports, and four different teams won region titles. And finally, the athletic program earned a second place finish in the race for the State Directors Cup, which represents the best overall program in the state by classification. Clearly, Walton athletics as a whole are something that all of us should be proud of and support in any way we can.

I I

As most of you already know, it’s a special thing to be a Raider, and the 2016 edition of Walton football promises to add to the legacy of great teams to play in the Valley. Head Coach Mo Dixon and his coaching staff are among the best you will find in the state of Georgia, and they have been working tirelessly during the offseason to prepare their young men for the challenges of the upcoming season, including a return to the Corky Kell Classic in the Georgia Dome to kick-off the year. As always, our coaches’ and players’ goals include competing for region and state championships, and they have invested the time and sweat equity over the spring and summer to put themselves in position to reach those goals. They will undoubtedly represent the Walton community well in all respects during the upcoming season.

Sports Med

Welcome to another promising season of Walton football in Raider Valley.

A special thank you is also due the Walton Touchdown Club for its tireless efforts to support Raider football and maintain and improve Raider Valley as one of the premier high school venues in the area. Stuart Gurr President, Walton Touchdown Club

Dear Walton Raider Families, On behalf of the Walton Touchdown Club (WTC), thank you for supporting the Walton Raider Football program. Since 1975, our football teams have relied heavily on support from the East Cobb community. Specifically, we have relied on countless volunteer hours from the parents in our program along with the generous financial support from our Corporate Sponsors who donate funds year after year, and from our local businesses who purchase advertising space in Raider Valley and within our football program. Without your ongoing support, our football teams would not be able to achieve their goals on and off the field. I would like to thank Principal Judy McNeil for the leadership she provides to Walton High School and the support she provides to the football program. I am also thankful for the many hours the Walton Touchdown Club officers have put forward in the offseason. Lastly, thank you to the Executive Committee for their insight into running the WTC. It has truly been a team effort. The theme for this year’s Walton Raider football team lead by Head Coach Mo Dixon is to #DOITRIGHT2016. Through the tireless leadership of our coaching staff, the football team has committed themselves to DO IT RIGHT in their preparation for the 2016 Season. The coaches and players have logged many hours in the weight room, in speed & agility workouts, film sessions and camps. No doubt, they are ready for the season! As the first home game approaches, I am confident the atmosphere will be electric in Raider Valley. The Senior Class players will be leading the team on the field and we are counting on Raider Nation to come out and support our team.

Maurice “Mo” Dixon Head Coach

Dear Raider Family, Welcome to Raider Valley! I am very excited to begin my third year as Walton’s Head Football Coach and am grateful to be part of this outstanding program. I sincerely appreciate Principal Judy McNeill, Athletic Director Chris Williams, and others on the search committee for giving me this opportunity. As you know, Walton High School is a special place because of its remarkable academic tradition and successful football program. This program has been built by great coaches and players and deserves the leadership necessary to continue this high level of success. As the head coach, it is my responsibility to continue the program legacy that has been built over the years and to ensure our staff and players strive to get better every day in all areas of their lives. Our program is a family. As such, we will strive to create that family atmosphere within the program, developing the culture of togetherness and commitment towards each other. I feel responsible to treat each player with honesty and fairness while instilling discipline to help them develop into young men that can be successful on and off the field. We will continue to grow the entire program and continue to play not only the best teams in Georgia, but in the nation, as well. We want to create lifelong memories for our players, their families and program supporters and will put in the work necessary to drive the program in the first-class manner it deserves. Walton High School has established a leadership role in the state of Georgia that is second to none, and I am excited to be a part of such a special school and football program! In closing, I would like to thank Walton High School students, the band, the cheerleaders, our team doctors, Sports Med staff, the Walton Touchdown Club, the volunteers, and everyone in the community who assists us in our efforts to bring a state championship to Walton High School. Friday nights in Raider Valley would not be possible without your support.

What is your most memorable Walton football experience? My most memorable Walton football experience was definitely when we were sophomores and we beat Lassiter 59-16. It was one of those games where you literally fall in love with your school. There was so much pride in our school for beating our biggest rivalry. It was a memory standing with all my friends and cheering on the raiders to victory that I’ll never forget. Do you have any pre-game rituals? It’s just a fun time to catch up with all the girls and hear about everyone’s week while doing our hair and make up and jamming out to music. What would be your favorite Sports Center highlight? To just keep going. This can definitely be applied to all situations in life, but on the competition floor, if something messes up, there’s nothing you can do. It’s already happened. So the best thing to do is just to keep going and focus on the things that you can control. Who has been the biggest influence on your athletic career, and why? Through the years, Pete has coached and assisted with most positions on both sides of the ball, and this year is once again the 9th grade wide receivers and defensive backs coach.

He is a graduate of Roswell High School, Kennesaw State University (B.S. Secondary Education and B.S. in Biology), North Georgia College (M.S. Secondary Education), as well as Walden University (Specialist and Ed.D.). Pete was a wrestler and football player at Roswell High School and graduated in 1983.

In addition to coaching football, Pete has been the Head Wrestling Coach at Walton since 1996. The Raiders have enjoyed much success on the mat under his leadership, including the school’s first region championship in 2001 and have been State Runner-Up three times (2005, 2007, 2009). The Marietta Daily Journal named Coach Murphy the 2001 and 2004 Cobb County Wrestling Coach of the Year. He is married to Lynne (former middle school science teacher and currently a para-pro at Davis Elementary School) and they have two children, Jacob (2014 graduate, DB, 4x wrestling state placer, including 2013 State Champion) who is wrestling for the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga, and Connor (2011 USTA Tennis state champion, member of the Varsity Tennis team last season) who is in the 10th grade here at Walton.

TRADITIONS IN THE VALLEY The story goes… Banana Pudding Anyone? In 2004 the Raiders boys would have their “pregame meal” that was prepared by the players’ moms. Madeline Freberg (Malcolm Freberg/Survivor Philippines) brought in her banana pudding as dessert and just so happened that the Raiders won BIG that night. So the boys said we HAVE to have BANANA PUDDING Friday to help us win. So in came the banana pudding for the rest of the season. Those Raiders boys took it to the DOME for the State semi-finals that year and swear to this day the ONLY reason they lost to Parkview was because they had no banana pudding that day (Saturday afternoon game with no pre-game meal)! So today the tradition still stands and those Raiders boys are served BANANA PUDDING at EVERY pre-game meal! Thank You Madeline for starting this tradition

GO RAIDERS!! Dear Raider FansWe are excited to present the 2016 edition of the Walton Football Program. It has been a rewarding experience to put together a keepsake that highlights our football community. We would like to thank our players, parents, coaches, cheerleaders, sports medicine team, administration, band, raider vision and student fans who all make Friday nights in Raider Valley so memorable! It takes the combined effort and cooperation of many people to put a book like this together. It all starts with selling program ads, and we sincerely appreciate our football players, cheerleaders and parents, as well as our East Cobb community, who made this a fabulous year for ad sales! Special thanks to the ad sales committee of Cellie Cohen-Smith, Paty Holdmeyer, Ellen Westbrock, and Carla Bradwell. Special thanks to the corporate sponsorship team of David Arnold, Steve Hoffman, Jeff Shoup, and Tarla McCann. We would also like to thank our production team- Suzy Goldman and her staff at Pubman, Inc., our photographers – Bush Enos of Bush Enos Sports, Magic Moment Photography, Genie Fleishel Photography, and our printer – Mark Huffman of Custom Sports Programs. Our program committee and the Walton Touchdown Club would like to wish the Class of 2017 and the entire Raider team a season to remember. Go Raiders!!! Sharon, Isabelle, Tricia, and Maria

sports medicine HEad Athletic Trainer Lindsay comes to Walton most recently from the University of Oklahoma in Norman, OK, where she served as the Head Athletic Trainer for Volleyball. During her time there, she also attended school to earn her Master’s in Education. Lindsay is a native of Cobb County, graduating from Kell High School, where she played basketball and softball for four years, earning two back-to-back state titles in softball in 2003 and 2004. Sadly, during her senior year, her competitive and athletic career ended with a knee injury. This unfortunate event sparked her interest in and initiated her passion and love for sports medicine. After high school, Lindsay attended the University of Georgia, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Education and Athletic Training. While at UGA, she worked with the football, baseball and cheerleading teams, and took courses to earn her Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification in November, 2011.

Lindsay Tant

Lindsay is glad to be back in Cobb County, and is excited to be a part of the high school athletics at Walton High School. She aims to provide the best level of care for the athletes, while creating a positive, competitive, and motivating environment through her work in sports medicine. Lindsay looks forward to marrying her fiance’ Jeremy King on October 28th during this football season.

Graduate Assistant Holly Richards is returning to the Walton Sports Medicine team this fall for her second season. A native of a Marietta, Holly graduated from Blessed Trinity High School where she played volleyball and soccer. She graduated from UGA in May 2015 with a B.S. Ed in Athletic Training. While at UGA, she gained practical experience through her work with the UGA Bulldog football team, traveling with and on the sidelines of every game throughout the 2014 season. Additionally, she worked as a student athletic trainer for the UGA track and field and the competition cheerleading teams. Holly is currently attending GA State where she is pursuing a Masters in Sports Medicine. Holly is a valuable addition to the Walton Football program.
