President’s Report August 2016 Steve McCombs—KY Region President
It’s August and the heat is on, and so is the Club activities list. In a little more than a month, we’ll have another fabulous DE event in early September. We had 21 cars go on the Keeneland Concours drive and the weather held out to become a hot and beautiful day. Our Club donated about $1,000 to the Kentucky Children’s Hospital of Lexington with the 50 entrance tickets and
rooms are not available. I’m asking the membership for HELP. We have an August meeting cook out at Jim Doll’s home, September is at BoomBozz, October at Rooster’s, and we really need places for November and December. We could always do Mexican again, but I believe most are getting tired of that. So if you have any suggestions for a place that is reasonably priced, not super loud, and can accommodate 35+ people, please let me or one of the officers know. As for National news: The full approval and purchasing of the increased office condo space is completed. There will be an open house and car show at the National Office building in early August in Maryland. If you’re interested, check out National’s website for details. The latest National talk is there will be another National Raffle and more cars will be given away soon.
“Thanks again to T.H. and Edward for putting these drives together. “ the coral changeling donation. We’re very proud to support such a great operation. T.H. Morris and Edward Hessel have completed the Kentucky Covered bridges tour and the BBQ smokehouse Brandenburg tour with 8, that right 8, more drives in the coming months! I would highly suggest you make plans to attend the August 7th drive to Hall’s restaurant in Winchester. What a fun place. Thanks again to T.H. and Edward for putting these drives together. I have to apologize for the disarray concerning the monthly restaurant meeting places. It’s either too expensive, closed on Mondays, or their
I always like to close with this statement: “This is your Club, you guys make it happen.” I ask that both new and existing members get involved. Attend an event, come to the monthly meeting. We have more new members this year than ever. Please make them feel welcome. And if there’s something you would like to do, let us know. Or better yet, put together the idea plan and we’ll help you pull it off. Until next month, see you at Jim Doll’s house for the August cookout meeting. 2016 Activities What a fun outing. We had a great turnout for the drive over to Brandenburg for a BBQ lunch and then an informal tour back to Louisville. Let's do it again next weekend. On Sunday, August 7th, we will be headed east to Hall's on the River for a 12:30pm lunch. We will gather at the park across from the Bluegrass dealership at 9:30am for a 10am departure. Please come with a full tank of gas and arrive early enough for us to have a quick driver's meeting before we head out. I have reserved a table for about 20 so if you are coming, please let me know. This will help me ensure that we get enough space. Please let me know by end of day Thursday, August 4th. For those that may be interested, after lunch, we can stop by the Fort Boonesborough State Park which will be very close by. Send me a note at mailto:terencehmorris@att.net if you have any questions. Hope to see you in July. If you plan to attend these drives, let me know so that I can be sure to have enough copies of the route printed off. Thanks, T.H.

From the Editor’s Desk By Belinda Schweinhart I apologize for being late with the newsletter again. I seem to be distracted at the end/beginning of the month. Last month was my birthday and we went out of town. Although it was only to my Mom’s house to do some repair work, she forgot it was my birthday again. Oh well. This month was Mark and my anniversary. 35 years! That’s only one more year than we’ve been members of the Porsche Club! All this and I spent all month arguing with Issuu support. For some reason they don’t automatically detect the links any more. They keep saying it looks OK to them.
Well duh. I did those links manually. It’s hard to find good help these days. <sigh> OK, enough complaining, on with the newsletter.

MEMBERS ONLY PRIVATE FACEBOOK EVENTS GROUP We have created a new way to share information with you about all of the planned activities for the club. This w ill be in addition to the other tools w e already use such as email announcements, the website and the monthly editions of the Pacesetter. A new page has been created on Facebook that is dedicated to activities and events. This page will be accessible only to club members and will contain detailed information about each planned activity, including dates, times, maps, and activity overview. Your use of this page also helps me see how many people are interested in each planned event as you are able to indicate that you are going, might be going, or will not be going. If you are already on Facebook and would like access to the page, please let me know and I will get you added. By design, it w ill not show up in a Facebook search and you have to be explicitly added to the group in order to see and receive page updates. I will just need your Facebook page name to get you added. If you are not currently on Facebook, I invite you to give it a try as it is a very powerful and convenient tool for communication. If you aren't sure how to get started, let me know and I would be glad to try and help. Facebook interaction can be as little or as much as you wish. Thanks! I look forward to seeing you on many of our outings! As usual, if there are things that Edward and I can do to make the outings more meaningful to you, please don't hesitate to drop us a note. We are always looking for new ideas. Regards, T.H. Morris mailto:terencehmorris@att.net

From July Panorama…. by Anthony Minstein The Kentucky Region July activities began with the Kentucky Covered Bridge Tour. The day dawned warm, with low humidity and all the cabs had tops down (except mine where the Missus was concerned with mussing her hair). The first bridge was outside the state capitol of Frankfort. We were preceded by members of the Lexington Corvette Owners Club. We challenged the Corvette folk to a rumble, seeing as how they all appeared to be over 60 and out of shape. Instead of fisticuffs, we photographed them in front of the bridge. Our next bridges were further away over roads generally straighter, yet scenic, passing through thorough-
“...seeing as how they all appeared to be over 60 and out of shape.” bred country. We enjoyed a picnic lunch (and tractor parade) at Blue Licks Battlefield State Park, where in 1782, the British, leading a force of Indians, engaged in battle against Kentucky pioneers,
Daniel Boone among them (spoiler alert, the British won the battle and lost the war). The tour ended in Cynthiana, viewing the recently completed mural of the Walking Dead (birthplace of two of the original graphic artists). July 16th was a club drive to the Keeneland Concours d’Elegance, this year’s featured marque: Chrysler. On July 30th, we traversed the moraines of Southern Indiana driving to Doc’s BBQ Smoke Shack in Brandenburg, KY. Our route took us up, over and around the Knobs of Indiana: the moraines glacially formed accumulation of unconsolidated glacial debris (soil and rock) occurring in formerly glaciated regions on Earth. The Knobs remain from the melting North American ice sheets. Whatever the cause, the roads have sweeping curves and high elevation overlooks (for Indiana anyway) across the Ohio River, itself a remnant of the melting ice sheets. This part of Indiana is lightly settled and rural with the roads open with little traffic. A great place for a Saturday drive.

WAIVERS REQUIRED FOR MINOR PARTICIPANTS **Important update for those planning on attending club activities with their underage family members** We are excited to offer a variety of activities to club members. Occasionally, minors attend these events and this is good to see because it is important that we continue the family friendly culture. We are all well accustomed to signing the waiver supplied by PCA national immediately prior to departing on our drives. We also have forms specifically addressing the participation by minors. In the past, we have been able to utilize the single signature of the guardian/parent attending the event but this is no longer the case. A recent development has led the insurance company to state that unless both guardians/parents of the minor sign the waiver, then neither the adult attendee or the minor attendee are covered by insurance. If you plan to bring your under the age of 18 family members along, please print off the waiver and have both parents sign the document and bring it along with you to the activity. A link to the waiver form is included below. Minor Waiver Form from PCA National Website link: https://www.pca.org/resource/waiver-minors

To be published in the September 2016 issue of “Die Porsche Kassette”
Cadillac made windshield wipers standard on their vehicles.
Windshield Wipers are wear items, just like brakes We’ve all been told that you need to ONLY use and tires and need to be replaced on a regular basis, Porsche (OEM) parts when replacing anything in generally when doing scheduled maintenance on the your car. For the most part that is great advise .... car. but not always! Depending on the type of wipers (material), their use Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) parts are and general (weather) conditions they will wear specifically designed for a particular car by the differently. As soon as you start to not see clearly factory to assure maximum performance and through your windshield during rain or other value, so, as a rule of thumb, it is inclement weather, they should be replaced. good advise to only use OEM as But, now that you’re aware of the aftermarket replacement parts on your wipers, which ones should you install? Keep in mind that our cars have different windshield sizes and curvatures, depending on the particular model and model year. On most Porsches (with very rare, racing, exceptions) there is a pair of blades on the windshield. But those two blades may be different in size and in curvature, so when replacing your wipers with aftermarket blades check the application guides which will tell you exactly which two blades you need.
“Porsche is probably the most criticized success story in the world!” Porsche. If your car is a Concour D’Elegance entry you should only use OEM and specific to your model and model year, otherwise the Judges will penalize you. But there are some areas where the aftermarket products have surpassed the OEM parts. Windshield Wipers is one of them. Except for the newest models, where the factory is catching up with the new materials and designs, the windshield wipers had not changed much throughout their history, which, as a side story, date back to 1903 when they were patented by Mary Anderson, from Birmingham, AL as a manually operated rubber blade-against-thewindshield contraption. It wasn’t till 1922 when
Page 24

Aside from the difference in size and curvature wipers come in 3 general types: Bracket, Beam and Hybrid.
The bracket type is the traditional w iper with a frame supporting the blade. This frame is designed to follow the windshield’s curvature
August 2016
and press the rubber blade onto the glass, but it is higher profile and can trap insects, road debris, and/ or ice in its components. The beam type uses a single strip of curved metal within the blade to keep the blade’s edge pressed against the glass. Because they are much lower profile that the bracket type they remain clear of buildup. They also have an airfoil design that pushes the blade harder against the windshield as speed increases. As the name implies, hybrid blades are a combination of the above. They use a plastic shell that acts as the frame but with a lower profile. The shell is also aerodynamically designed to keep the blade against the glass even at high speeds. And then you have a variety of brands to choose from, such as Bosch, Rain-X, Michelin, etc., etc.
By the way, you can get them at just about any auto parts store or online for less than $20.00 per blade and they are very easy to install by yourself.
I personally like and recommend the Bosch ICON and the Rain-X Latitude (in that order). They both have excellent wiper qualities but Bosch recently reformulated their blades with “Clear Max 365”, which they claim resists ozone-induced cracking of the material longer than the competition. Only time will tell if those claims are right, but I’ll be wiping away rain and love bugs in the meantime.
