President’s Report October 2016 Steve McCombs—KY Region President

Wow it’s hard to believe that October is already here. October offers some of the best weather in the Ohio Valley for driving. There are several events that we have planned including The Overlook Restaurant in Leavenworth, IN, The 2nd German Fest and Bourbon tasting, and the 15th annual Huber’s Winery Drive and meet-up with 3 other PCA Regions. Plus there’s Cars & Coffee and the

thank all the DE participants for their involvement each and every time and their endless enthusiasm. It would be wonderful if the DE people would join the Club in some of the drives and/or monthly meetings. And the non-DE members should go up and watch a track event and enjoy the whole thing. The Kentucky Region has the best group of car people anywhere. And the best thing is that everyone makes each other feel welcome and part of the BEST Region in all of PCA!

“Thank You Bluegrass Porsche” monthly membership meeting. Things are pretty packed with fun things to do, just check out the website for details. In September, I did my fourth DE event, and I have to say I’m having a blast. Driving the Mini, the smallest car with the lowest horsepower, against the truly awesome Porsche cars is exciting and changeling. But the most fun is meeting the people. The members at the DE’s are usually not the ones who go on the drives, do the car shows, or even come to the monthly meetings. But never the less, they are true Porsche lovers. They’re really nice, helpful and a fun group people to be with. As President, I would like to

The Bluegrass Motorsports Porsche Dealership, with Randy Biery and the Bluegrass mechanics and support team, makes our DE events such a huge success. No other Porsche Dealership has this kind of involvement and commitment to their PCA Region. Thank You Bluegrass Porsche for everything you do with us and for us. You guys are the

very BEST. November is election month for our Club and our Country. All I would like to say just, GO out and Vote! If you would like to hold an office for 2017 club offices, please email your name to Anthony Minstein (nyc2sf2@gmail.com) so we can have an election at the November 14th monthly meeting @ BoomBozz in St. Matthews. And if you’re happy with those currently in office we can re-elect them and move on towards more fun things to do in 2017. We will be having an After Christmas Party probably the second Saturday evening in January. I would like to ask the entire membership to please attend. I would also like to ask for your help in offering door prizes for this party. If you have a business and you would like to offer a gift certificate, or if you are friends with someone who would like to offer a door prize, please help us make the party really exciting and extra fun with some awesome prizes. Thanks in advance for all your help. That’s all for now, see you at the October meeting at Rooster’s on Shelbyville Rd. Middletown. @ 7:00pm Regards, Steve H. McCombs (2016 Kypca president)

From the Editor’s Desk By Belinda Schweinhart We attended the visitation of John & Cheryl Campbell’s daughter last night. Very sad, she was only 21. The receiving line was the longest I’ve ever seen, and the Schweinharts have a huge family with huge crowds all by themselves. She was obviously well loved and well respected. We can only hope for a fourth of that number to attend our own services. Anyway, my point is: Have you hugged your kids today? Have you told them how much you love them? Don’t wait. Do it now. You just never know what will happen tomorrow.

While you’re at it, hug your spouse, your parents and your siblings. Now I need a Kleenex…...

MEMBERS ONLY PRIVATE FACEBOOK EVENTS GROUP We have created a new way to share information with you about all of the planned activities for the club. This w ill be in addition to the other tools w e already use such as email announcements, the website and the monthly editions of the Pacesetter. A new page has been created on Facebook that is dedicated to activities and events. This page will be accessible only to club members and will contain detailed information about each planned activity, including dates, times, maps, and activity overview. Your use of this page also helps me see how many people are interested in each planned event as you are able to indicate that you are going, might be going, or will not be going. If you are already on Facebook and would like access to the page, please let me know and I will get you added. By design, it w ill not show up in a Facebook search and you have to be explicitly added to the group in order to see and receive page updates. I will just need your Facebook page name to get you added. If you are not currently on Facebook, I invite you to give it a try as it is a very powerful and convenient tool for communication. If you aren't sure how to get started, let me know and I would be glad to try and help. Facebook interaction can be as little or as much as you wish. Thanks! I look forward to seeing you on many of our outings! As usual, if there are things that Edward and I can do to make the outings more meaningful to you, please don't hesitate to drop us a note. We are always looking for new ideas. Regards, T.H. Morris terencehmorris@att.net

September Activities report Photos by T.H.Morris Last night's meeting at Mamma's Mustard Pickles and BBQ in St. Matthews was well attended. There was plenty of good food and good conversation. As we worked our way through the various updates, it dawned on me that I hadn't provided an activity update in a while. Speaking of Mamma's Mustard, if you are a fan of Guy Fieri's TV show Diners Drive Ins and Dives then you are in for a treat. He stopped by Mamma's last Friday to film an episode while in town opening up his own new restaurant at Fourth Street Live. The episode has already been announced on the show's website www.dinersdriveinsdiveslocations.com/mommas-mustard-pickles-bbq-kentucky.html

Back to our activities. Our most recent drive was to visit Abe Lincoln's birthplace. In the weeks leading up to the drive, I had not heard much chatter so I was beginning to think that it was going to be just a handful of cars, especially since it was going to happen over Labor Day weekend. I was pleasantly surprised when it ended up being 18 cars and about 25 people. We had a relaxed route that mixed a few highway miles with a few scenic route miles leading us into the Hodgenville town square where we quickly transformed the parking scene from pick up trucks to what you see in the photos. As you can imagine, there was a bit of rubber necking as traffic flowed through the center of town.

It’s the people……... Page 14

The purpose of the stop was to grab a quick lunch at Laha's Red Castle Burgers. Remember, I picked this place thinking we were going to be a small group. Turns out a sudden crowd of 25 on top of normal Saturday lunch crowd makes for a rather busy burger joint. We still managed to smile and have fun though by splitting into two groups, one getting burgers and the other group getting ice cream next door. I will be making a return trip soon because both were quite tasty. After lunch we proceeded down to the birthplace and took in all that was to be seen and heard. I highly recommend a visit if you haven't had the occasion to go.

September Activities report continued... Photos by T.H.Morris Up next is a drive on Saturday September 24th that was originally planned to go visit the Kentucky Horse Park near Lexington. Due to a general lack of interest, this drive has been updated and we are now going to visit a new distillery in Lexington. It is called Barrel House and I am pretty sure we drove right past it on our way back from our last visit to Lexington which was for the West Sixth Brewery tour. For the Barrel House Distillery drive we will leave from the park across from the dealership at 10AM and work our way toward Wallace Station for lunch. The distillery tour is at 1:30PM so we should have ample time to enjoy country roads and eat lunch. I was talking to the distillery owner and he seems rather excited to have a parking lot full of our vehicles and has been most accommodating to our tour request. Immediately next door is the excellent ice cream maker Crank & Boom which I suspect may get a visit from a couple of our drivers. As I have looked into this more, I learned that there is a whole collection of new businesses by the distillery. This area is called Pepper Campus and you can learn more about it on their website at www.peppercampus.com I do need to get a headcount on this one as the tour is limited in size. Please let me know if you are going and if you have a co-pilot.

October Pano Article by Anthony Minstein Kentucky Region began September with two drives and a DE. Our first drive over Labor Day went to Hodgenville, KY to visit Lincoln Birthplace National Park. With 18 cars and 26 attendees we managed to fill up the parking spaces in the town square, stopping for lunch before driving to the Park outside town. Lunch was Laha’s Red Castle Hamburgers, a family business run by the same family since 1937, with 8 stools and one grill. They had more customers in that one hour than they normally have all week. The menu is limited, specializing in burgers, chili, fries, and onion rings. Some of us began lunch at the Sweet Shop Desert Café. Not to worry, the club enjoyed a nutritious lunch consisting of all five food groups: meat, french fries, onion rings, milk shakes, cherries and whip cream. Born in a single room log cabin on his father's Sinking Spring Farm on Sunday, February 12, 1809, Abraham Lincoln's early years on the Kentucky frontier helped shape his character and prepare the boy up to become sixteenth President of the United States in the most turbulent times of the Civil War. The Park featured a replica of the family’s cabin and was the nation’s first memorial to Lincoln, initially built with donations. Our second drive in the month crossed thoroughbred horse country to visit Barrel House Distillery in Lexington. Besides the distillery, the club stopped for Crank and Boom ice cream. Our 2nd DE of the year was again a great success with 160 cars participating. A bit of rain on Saturday morning gave participants a chance to try out some alternate drive lines and leave a wake on the 4th turn lake. As usual, Bluegrass Porsche sponsored dinners both nights at the host hotel allowing participants ample opportunity to socialize.

WAIVERS REQUIRED FOR MINOR PARTICIPANTS **Important update for those planning on attending club activities with their underage family members** We are excited to offer a variety of activities to club members. Occasionally, minors attend these events and this is good to see because it is important that we continue the family friendly culture. We are all well accustomed to signing the waiver supplied by PCA national immediately prior to departing on our drives. We also have forms specifically addressing the participation by minors. In the past, we have been able to utilize the single signature of the guardian/parent attending the event but this is no longer the case. A recent development has led the insurance company to state that unless both guardians/parents of the minor sign the waiver, then neither the adult attendee or the minor attendee are covered by insurance. If you plan to bring your under the age of 18 family members along, please print off the waiver and have both parents sign the document and bring it along with you to the activity. A link to the waiver form is included below. Minor Waiver Form from PCA National Website link: https://www.pca.org/resource/waiver-minors

It’s A Dirty Job To be published in the October 2016 issue of “Die Porsche Kassette”

... but somebody’s got to do it! That responsibility falls to the car’s different filters, and each modern Porsche has a variety of them: · Engine Air Filter (981/982 Boxsters and Caymans have 2 of them) · Engine Oil Filter (older cars have a spin-on type filter, new ones have an insert) · Cabin [Pollen] Filter · Fuel Filter (external filter up to 2000, after that it’s integrated in the fuel pump) · Transmission Filter (Tiptronics)

a combination of paper/foam. These filters do a great job at stopping dirt, yet allowing enough air through to produce the HP they were intended for. There are some myths that I’d like to dispel concerning air filters. One of the first mods people want do to their car is to buy an aftermarket air filter because it claims that it makes more power. 99.9% of the time that’s not true. The amount of air that can go into a normally aspirated engine depends on the cross section (area) of the throttle body, and the air filter is many times larger than the throttle body, so it will allow all of the air that that engine can breathe in.

“The filter’s function is to stop dirt.” A filter’s function is to scrub clean the medium that passes through it by forcing it through very small porosity in the material. In plain English, the filter’ s function is to stop dirt. No matter where that filter is located. Depending on the type and use, the filter could be made from paper, foam, metal, plastic and a myriad of other materials.

If you put a less restrictive filter than OEM meaning that the holes are larger, it’s only going to let more dirt through because as we said before, the amount of air is dictated by the throttle body’s size. In the image you can see the throttle body’s size (pink circle) in comparison with the whole air filter in a 996 Carrera.

Engine Air Filter: Dirt into the engine can cause scratches in the cylinder walls and also dirties up the oil. You need to stop that dirt. Most modern Porsches come with a paper filter or

Page 28

PaceSetter

October2016

Then there are the reusable (oil-impregnatedgauze) filters which claim to let more air through yet trap more dirt because of the oil. The dirt part may be marginally true, but no more air will be sucked through because of what we explained before.

and then trapped by the oil filter. These particles, if left unfiltered could eventually cause damage to the cylinder walls, and many other internal parts that need clean oil for lubrication.

But there is also the oil issue. The majority of these filters will let tiny oil droplets get pulled from the filter and into the air stream going into the engine. This air must first pass by the Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF) which measures the amount of air flowing in so that the computer (ECU) can add the correct amount of gasoline. But oil deposits on the MAF’s hot wire will foul the measurement and foul the MAF which is not inexpensive. Stay away from these.

The older cars use the metal spin-on filter, while the newer ones have the plastic reusable canister with a disposable, single-use, paper oil filter insert, but they both do exactly the same job: stop debris. It is recommended that every time you change your oil filter you cut it open and carefully inspect it for foreign material, especially metal. This is a window into the engine allowing us to see what’s going on inside it and if any measures need to be taken before damage occurs. Finally there’s the Cold Air Intakes that also advertise more HP. If you look at your Porsche and follow the path of the air going into the engine you’ll see that it is cold air, or at least ambient temperature air because it doesn’t dwell in the engine compartment. Modern Porsches channel the outside air directly through the filter, past the MAF and into the throttle body, so they all have cold air intakes from the factory! The best advise is use the OEM filter and replace it as recommended or sooner if you drive in a dusty environment. Engine Oil Filter: During the engine’s normal operation tiny bits of metal and other materials are washed out by the oil

PaceSetter

October 2016

Page 29

Cabin [pollen] Filter: As it’s name implies, this filter scrubs the air coming into the car’s cabin. On a hardtop coupe I think it’s a great idea, especially if you are an allergic person and it’s spring time..... but on a convertible? Most pollen filters are impregnated with active carbon particles to eliminate odors.

Fuel Filter: On pre-2001 Porsches you can find an external fuel filter, generally in the tunnel where the fuel lines run from the tank to the engine. These filters are in-line type and have a limited life so they require replacing. Obviously, you need to keep the fuel very clean since you don’t know what’s inside the gas pump’s underground tanks.

On newer Porsches, the fuel filter is integrated into the fuel pump and is submerged in gasoline inside the tank. These are self-cleaning and require no regular service. Automatic [Tiptronic] Transmission Filter: This filter is located inside the transmission’s oil pan and needs to be replaced when doing the recommended transmission service schedule. It gets incredibly dirty and clogged at the end of it’s life and the transmission shifts much better after replacing.

As you have seen, each one of your car’s filter is of vital importance. Each one has a service life and should be replaced when scheduled or before, if your car is driven in very dusty conditions.
